With inflation, that would be about $50 now. Seeing a major band or artist for $50 nowadays would still be super cheap. Even for smaller artists on national tours that would be a good price.
It's funny because back in high school in college I would go to shows all the time for $10-15. Now I can find tickets for shows I want to see for $100-$150 sometimes, and proportionally to me that is actually way less money now (since I have a job instead of being a student), but I just can't bring myself to do it.
It helps that I hate stadium shows. Yeah, I *could* spent hundreds of dollars to see Metallica on a stage from a quarter-mile away, or I could spend a fraction of that, see a touring act at a local club, and chat with the band at the merch table.
The only concert I’m going to this summer was Jason Isbell this last Saturday. The venue doesn’t use Ticketmaster, and so tickets for a 2,000 seat outdoor concert were $53 each.
It’s everything, recently went to a pro basketball game. We were nose bleeds and had about 20 drunken college kids in front of us dressed all in green man and we paid 80 a ticket.
I used to count myself lucky that I was a fan of bands that were big enough to play small arenas or concert halls, but not so big they'd be in huge venues with huge price tags.
Now even those lower-mid-range acts are out of my price range.
As a truck driver, I no longer eat any meals out of truck stop restaurants. A T-bone steak dinner at the Petro cost me almost $40 after taxes and a tip. That price was the breaking point for me. Instead, I invested in a vacuum sealer, a Dometic 12-volt fridge/freezer, and a Gas One camping stove. The total initial cost was nearly $1,000, but I expect to recoup that investment in just 3 to 4 months by cutting restaurant meals out of my budget entirely.
To put it in perspective, imagine spending $40 on a single meal versus prepping your own food for a fraction of the cost. By using these tools, I can prepare a week's worth of meals for what one restaurant dinner would cost.
I've also started brewing my own tea and coffee and using drink mixes instead of buying beverages. For example, a bottle of Gatorade now costs around $3.45, but making your own electrolyte drink with a mix can bring that cost down significantly.
Overall, this change has not only saved me money but also allowed me to have more control over what I eat, leading to healthier choices on the road.

There are also meal heating lunch boxes that you can plug in, there's a mini crock pot version but there's also an insulated lunch box version, just pop the right sized container in, zip it closed, and plug it in. They're great for reheating leftovers.

A strange one, but bowling. A few years ago my girlfriend and I went bowling at a local Bowlero and it was maybe $60 for shoe rental and 2 hours of bowling for two people. Just recently we checked prices online so we could go again, and the same rental and playing time is $150! Insanity.
Edit to add: this is the only bowling alley left in this medium size city. It used to be an AMF bowling alley before Bowlero. I looked around and the next closest one is in a small town an hour away, so not really viable for quick fun entertainment. And regarding Groupon deals: I checked the app and Bowlero isn’t running any deals there currently.

That is insane. Our local (Northeastern) candle pin (little balls) on Tuesday night is 2 bucks a string, plus like a 3 dollar shoe rental. On Friday nights it's 20 bucks an hour and like 3.5 a shoe rental. The pizza is like 8 bucks for a 12 inches, and 4.50 local IPAs. My husband, I 4 kids went for a Friday night and ate and drank and bowled for 2 hours, and paid like 150.
My wife never went Go Karting. I wanted to take her to get something small off of her bucket list. We found an indoor Go Kart track. No other Go Karting places within 50+ miles of us.
We each got 2 tickets for Go Karting. Each ticket is good for a 7 minute run. So, 14 minutes each.

Bowlero took over all of my cities bowling alleys. Literally bought all of them. There were 4. They’re all 150$ like you said. What the actual fuck. Grapes did that recently. It was almost 3.00 a lb for about 4 months and just recently dropped down to 1.89, probably because they were rotting in the bags. (Looked like it at the stores) before the price spike they were around 1.20 a lb though. I know because they were a staple in my husband's lunch for years.
Eyeglasses for those of us with vision so poor that the lenses need to be ground down, lest they wind up looking like coke bottles. All the discount websites for eyeglasses out there are exclusively focused on frames. Need the lenses ground down (even worse if they’re bifocals) and you’re spending a minimum of $450 before all is said and done.
Macdonald’s is not even filling. Paying that much for a burger the diameter of a palm and thin patties is just not worth it.

All the discount websites for eyeglasses out there are exclusively focused on frames. Need the lenses ground down (even worse if they’re bifocals) and you’re spending a minimum of $450 before all is said and done.
McDonald’s
Macdonald’s is not even filling. Paying that much for a burger the diameter of a palm and thin patties is just not worth it. I normally don’t order fast food because of the price, but for the sake of Fourth of July I will indulge in a burger, not from Macdonald’s though.
It's insane. I live in NJ. I bought an egg Mcmuffin, and a bacon egg and cheese biscuit at McDonald's yesterday and it was 9.57. I hardly ever go to any fast food joints, but now I won't be going at all.

It used to be cheap and fast. Then during the pandemic they were short staffed so it was slow but at least it was still cheap. Now it's not even cheap. Hopefully they go out of business soon so other corps learn that customers won't put up with being abused.

Makes me very glad it only takes a couple soft tacos or a bean burrito to fill me up. Those Cinnabon bites though... the price is stupid but they are sooo good. And not having to make yeast dough or risk a serious oil burn making them myself, almost worth it.
Well yeah. If I go the cheap route, I can fill up on 10 or less. But, I really like their cantina menu so there's that. I went on a splurge recently and it's just too much anymore so the only take out I get now is pizza, Chinese food or Raising Cane's (just got these where I live and 10000% better than ChikFilA imo).
I remember when $20 worth of Taco Bell was a joke. A meal so large that it was a challenge to finish. People legitimately wouldn’t believe that you had even gotten close.

Deodorant is like 6 bucks a stick now
I started trimming my pit hair very close. Now all of the deodorant is on my skin where it's useful instead of stuck in the hair. A stick lasts much longer.

I don’t smoke but the cost of cigarettes here is almost $60 a pack of 25 which is about $40 USD. I’m shocked every time I see someone fork over that much money. A pack a day habit is as much as weekly rent.
Where do you live? I'm in the USA in one of the most expensive places to purchase cigarettes. I thought I saw a Newport sign that said $11.87USD/pack. It's still ridiculous and I am glad I don't have that addiction.

That is crazy wow. I smoked for 20 years and switched to vaping about 5 years ago. It runs me around 30.00 for two weeks worth of coils and juice. Better still I don't stink like stale cigarette smoke and I only cough when I catch a cold.

To me what’s really strange is the imbalance of prices. When I go food shopping, I buy what I want. I’m not super frugal, but I’m also not buying processed food mostly. I’ll buy some crackers and chicken salad as a treat. The rest is the, if it will rot, that’s what you eat. That usually runs $150-$200 for a week. At the same time I can buy a nice TV for $200. That’s fucked up.

Those days are gone though. They even removed the fitting rooms because they know most people won't bother returning a 7.00 pair of jeans within the 3 day limit. (They say it's bcuz of shoplifting but bullshit) I buy a lot less and still keep my total below 20.00 because fk that.
