That really depressed me as a little kid:
1. The Rebel base on Hoth overrun by snow troopers.
2. The death of Luke’s tail gunner, Dak.
3. Han captured and frozen in carbonite, taken away as a trophy by Boba Fett.
4. Leia in the holding cell on Cloud City.
5. Luke losing the lightsaber battle to Vader.
6. Luke nearly falling to his death, losing his hand.
7. Luke in the Bacta tank.
8. The remaining Rebel ships on the fringe of the galaxy.
Did they really *win* though?
Vader's one and only goal was to turn Luke. He failed. He discovered that Luke would rather die than join the dark side.
The remaining rebels escape and live to fight another day, and by the opening of Jedi, they're far more organized and technologically advanced than we ever knew.
I'd hardly call this a victory for the Empire...it's that just by the standards set by traditional Western storytelling, the villains not being completely destroyed feels like a W.
They weren’t more technologically advanced in ROTJ. They had the Mon Calamari ships, A-wings, and B-wings at that point in time; they just weren’t shown on screen as that part of the fleet was off doing something else in ESB time.
Well the movie shows them in this big control room with all these screens and thousands of ships flying about...it always looked to me like they were.
Of course that guy who knows the names of them all comes in and sets me straight though lol
I'd argue that Skynet still loses that one though. John Conner eventually defeats Skynet, which is why Skynet wants him dead so much.
Sure, judgement day still happens. But Conner survives, which means Skynet loses in the end. Skynet failed in it's mission to kill Conner before judgement day.
For Skynet it isn't. Conner moves only one way, always forwards towards a victory he keeps getting better prepared for. For Skynet it's a vicious cycle of defeat, trying to alter history, failing and trying again.
True...
I don't exactly remember though, wasn't Rorschach branded a criminal though? I'm sure someone in Ozymandias's position could present Rorschach's diary as one of a madman's.
But you raise a good point
It’s been a while, but Dent was a toxic hothead in his dept that they gave him the moniker two-face… batman is a billionaire beating on the mentally ill people in Gotham as well as people who turn to crime to make a living, while joker burned the mobs money, exposed dent, and forced Batman to stop his public terrorism. I think joker is the real hero
Biden is an amazing president.
His administration has done incredible things . Capping Insulin, infrastructure, chips program, overtime wages, calming the economy, Ukraine. Dude has been the best president of my lifetime (I'm 40) by a long shot.
Better than Reagan, bush, clinton, bush 2, Obama and Trump.
First movie that came to my mind is Se7en
Sure he died , but he won.
Nightcrawler
Priminal Fear, Seven, Funny Games, Avengers Indefinity War, The Dark Knight, No Country for Old Men, The usual Suspects and Chinatown.
I think Arlington Road would fit here
Yeah I'm not so definite the bad guys won in one of those movies
I’m actually so curious which one you’re referring to, unless you’re making a joke about the typo?
Also Fight Club technically.

Empire Strikes Back

Luke found out that A-hole was his dad. Emotional damage!!!
Right after he CUT HIS HAND OFF!

They were new in that regard, they just went back and retconned it so that the Rebels always had these ships.
Oh right. That explains it then.
Yes! My first movie where the bad guys won. I was only a kid and I was so crestfallen. But then Return of the Jedi made me felt better.
No Country for Old Men comes to mind. You spend the whole movie waiting for Chirgurh to get his commuppance and he just...doesn't.
I mean, he kinda does but it's a very disproportionate fuxk you at the end
Welcome to how McCarthy writes
The Usual Suspects.
Hereditary
Midsommar for that matter too.
Inside Man
The bad guy was the Nazi banker.
Terminator 3, to be forever after reviled by fans of the franchise.

It's not a win condition then, is it? It's just a vicious time cycle. Skynet --> Judgment Day --> Resistance --> John Connor --> Kyle Reese --> Skynet
For Skynet it isn't. Conner moves only one way, always forwards towards a victory he keeps getting better prepared for. For Skynet it's a vicious cycle of defeat, trying to alter history, failing and trying again.
Agreed. The nukes goes on no matter what
The ending was the o ly thing the movie got right.
Avengers: Infinity War
Thanos isn't bad. He is right. Malthus predicts this as well. The avengers are idiots and don't understand.

The cabin in the woods.
Nah thats just everybody losing.
‘Watchmen’ and ‘The Thing’
Arguably Ozymandias does what he does with a noble goal and succeeds, I feel like he'd be the good guy in the history books.
Touché
Well, history is written by the victors, and since he won...
He might have won. Rorschach’s journal could also completely undo his “great work” and lead to the sort of disastrous fall that befits his name.
True... I don't exactly remember though, wasn't Rorschach branded a criminal though? I'm sure someone in Ozymandias's position could present Rorschach's diary as one of a madman's. But you raise a good point
Rocky The Karate Kid Rocky 6? The last one before Creed 1 Terminator
I like to think The Dark Knight, you can argue Joker gets what he wanted in the end by breaking Gotham's white knight.
