This is what I thought too. They also cancelled their survival game and already announced the next 3 WoW expansions. There's really just nothing to talk about.
> There's really just nothing to talk about.
you clearly haven't been paying attention to how shameless these bloodsuckers have gotten. Blizzcon in 2024 would be like:
New announcement! Worlds of Warcraft, a mobile game with microtransactions
New announcement! Overwatch 3 with PVE content everybody has been asking for, base game costs 90 dollars with every character being unlockable for 90 dollars. There will also be emotes, for 90 dollars each. The PVE content won't be added at launch, but bro, trust ;)
New announcement! Diablo 3 Reforged, a first person pvp egoshooter played in third person
New announcement! Starcraft dating sim, with Kerrigan and Nova, and both of them tell you for 20 hours that, like, dating is an oppressive systematic invention of the patriarchy and you are not a real ally unless you also purchase the 200 dollar release day DLC featuring a bowl of vegetables
They’re dealing with negative press and trying to revive games people are getting frustrated with
Strategically it’s better to hold off until they have more of substance to show off
Nothing to share is probably the main reason. Also they are apparently doing multiple in-person events for the 30th Warcraft anniversary, so maybe they decided to just do a Warcraft event this year.
Nothing to announce. They announced three wow expansions last blizzcon. There won't be another Diablo game for a while. Overwatch is dead. StarCraft is dead. Hearthstone is dead and heroes of the storm is dead.
Man typing this out just hit me in the feels :(
Because they've been a shitty gaming company for over a decade now. "Blizzard" that actually had a reason to hold BlizzCons, is long gone. The BlizzCons since Blizzard was bought out, have only been there as a formality, and to stoke more nostalgia. Blizzard had their own conventions in the past, because they were actually releasing titles and making games at that time. For a while now, all Activision has been doing is making remasters and "Classic." There's no reason to hold expensive conventions just for that. Remember Immortal? OW2? Yeah, we all do.
The company is done. The only people who play Blizzard games are the people who live in Blizzard past, and can't seem to break themselves from the stranglehold that Bobby Kotick put onto them. Now Bobby is gone, and these same clowns think that Microsoft will save them.
All the other Cons have been merging for a reason. If "Blizzard," though not a real gaming company anymore ever does have a Convention, it will be a side show in a Microsoft convention. That's it. Because that's all "Blizzard" is anymore. A name used to stoke nostalgia to get sales.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I still fuck around with D2 because that was my shit before WoW but I won't pay that company a dime with what has happened to it. You put it pretty spot on. Still remember dreaming of going to a blizzcon around 07 or 08. Wouldn't fly across the country to do that at all these days.
Acti bought blizzard in 08, the year WOTLK came out.
I know people doom on acti hard, but blizzard only had 3 blizzcons before the activation takeover.
Realistically Most people’s con memories would have happened under activision, StarCraft 2 was hype as fuck and that trailer, god damn.
The few times i open [battle.net](http://battle.net) i always get depressed since i barely have any games installed anymore and i used to absolutely love blizzard games. I removed classic wow, retail and OW2.. hots was fun but they killed it so only Hearthstone and Diablo 4 are left.
Right, but as said, that was actually Blizzard. This is Blizzard in name only. It's not the same company. These people didn't even want classic wow, until they realized they could make people pay a sub to play it. "You think you want it, but you don't" lol. They are completly out of touch
Very simple; why would there be a Blizzcon?
OW2 is dead. D4 idk but I doubt there's any big Diablo things coming. WoW has 2 expansions this year, again nothing really announceworthy.
It'd be a very empty Blizzcon that'll hardly be worth visiting and thus not economically viable.
Also I imagine the Microsoft acquisition is part of this. There simply aren't any new big things happening in this time of transition. No big decisions made before the change of hands and not enough time since then to have any impact. Bit of an intermezzo.
Diablo had their market snatched by PoE, while D3 and D4 are casual-fied boring games that don't scratch my D2 itch. Everything that I loved about D2 (people talking shit on Bnet, OP runewords, crazy build diversity, etc.) was systematically excised by Blizzard.
I played D2 compulsively, bought D3 and found it meh, didn't even buy D4. Nearly none of my friends who played D2 are playing D4 now. If they can't even attract the audience that was addicted to D2 20 years ago, who are they appealing to today? I bet the game is suffering massive losses.
Diablo 4 is suppose to be getting an expansion later this year iirc but the games so dead noone really cares, the arpg die hards are more focused on poe2.
at the last blizzcon it was a shitshow it took hours to get people inside tbrough the line, and it was super fucking hot outside.
then they ran out of physical goody bags that are promised.
there was an issue with the VIP seating because it was empty but everyone else ran out of seats and they left it empty (im going off my shitty memory)
they announced the next 3 xpacs for wow alrdy.
hearthstone announcement was very memey because they already announced everything on twitter like a week before blizzcon.. it gave off the vibe of a manager calling a meeting to read an email that was sent to everyone already, waste of time.
HoTs dead game
D4 team looked like theyre about to have a stress induced stroke trying to scrape together anything that made sense.
for some reason they arent harvesting starcraft fanbase but at this point its prob best.
overwatch has so much bullshit social rules around it and also theyre trying to get a battlepass going in it to squeeze out any cash from the suckers still playing.. i mean seriously you can get 50 lvls in a battle pass for the new hero or you can pay money to fast track to it. just creates a p2w for the start of the seasons. also its taking the LoL route so if you type youre banned.
honestly i think blizz should take any money they had for blizzcon and dump it into other things. maybe make the SOD dev team double digit numbers. who knows
That cancellation means "We know we fucked up with D4 and what we have to show will only make things worse.", "We killed OW2 and we're okay with that". "Our survival game was slop anyway". "Keep playing Diablo Eternal and WoW and be exited about D4 next season's season pass".
Nothing special to announce I'd wager.
Costs a lot of money to hold blizzcon if its just to tell people that theyre still not implementing single player overwatch.
My theory is Microsoft making them roll it into their convention. The venue did have a conflict, but I don’t think that would merit cancelling the whole thing. It’s the 20th anniversary of WoW it should have been madness
I remember when I was in like 4-5th grade and MoP dropped my dad took me to the midnight release in Irvine on a school night and it was the most awesome experience of my life. Got like 150$ in gamestop cards for being far back in line for the Dev signing lol. Still woke up for school the next morning and bragged about it to all my friends, best night ever RIP Dad 💜
Same, bro. I'm one of the neckbeards who remembers the glory days when Starcraft 2 was just out and we "Blizzies" were going apeshit at the wish fufillment.
It´ll take years to see the effects of Microsofts involvement, good or bad. The one thing that already happened is that Microsoft managed to get it back into the Chinese market.
It has also been freeing af enjoying other games lately. It’s a great time to be a gamer, so many good options out there, new and upcoming developers who love their products who are worthy of our attention and money.
’Member when the blizzard logo on a game was equal to a guarantee the game would be world class? WC3, StarCraft, early WoW, D1 & D2..
They were basically the only games (except for AoE2) that I could play on my Mac like from 2000 to 2009
Calling customer support, and they would fix your issue right away? Real GMs, sometimes showing themselves In game.
It’s a shame really. What a fall from grace. Has there been any worse?
Yeah i was gonna say, some of us have been feeling that way since the early 2000s.
Doesn't matter how they puppet the cadaver the parts that made blizzard a beloved game company rotted away looong ago.
Enterprise is good. Publicly traded companies trying to please their stockholders with short term gains at the expense of the health of the company, their employees, and their customers is bad.
No surprise. They haven't actually needed a convention for years now. Blizzard hasn't been a real gaming company in over a decade. What are they doing to do? Announce their next remaster or canceled project?
Good guy Blizzard, helping all their fans save money so that they can buy the next D4 skins/WoW mounts/OW skins and whatever DLC they are pushing out this year
Blizzcon 2023 was nothing like the event I have attended since 2007. There were barely any panels, there was barely any seating, and frankly, there was barely any fun. For example, as I approached the convention they had placed a series of security points that you needed a wrist band to get through, and then a second point in the building before I even got my badge. My radar went up. This is blizzcon, not the fucking UN.
The merch sucked. I didn’t buy a single thing. It was all garbage, but the alpha garbage was a black and piss yellow Warcraft hockey jersey.
I watched Metzen for the Warcraft announcement and that was pretty much it. You can’t drink in the con any more. The darkmoon faire was packed beyond belief. I don’t remember seeing a single vendor booth that I wanted to visit. Everything that made it fun was drained out of it.
In sum, the magic of blizzcon has been digested, over complicated, and made entirely corporate. There’s no need for another blizzcon if this is how they will run the event.
>I watched Metzen for the Warcraft announcement and that was pretty much it.
Hm yeah, this is what I wanted to ask.. from the online stream, it looked like there was not much else than the stage events, but I did not think too much about it, because stream can be misrepresenting. But then it wasn't... Too bad.
This actually makes sense, Blizzard doesn't have the IP line it used to have and they do continuous campfires for D4 and Dev Talks for WoW so there isn't much to talk about there.
StarCraft is effectively dead development wise, nothing really new to discuss and tournaments are mostly fan-driven.
Overwatch is... I dunno.
Hearthstone is chugging along, but hype around that basically died I feel.
No new IP either to discuss.
Yeah this feels the most accurate with everyone pulling away from big cons and doing their own thing could see it just getting rolled into whatever Microsoft does
Actually pretty sad, not just for the "haha blizzard bad only dead games now" memes. Its especially sad because the OG Blizzard used to celebrate their communities at this event and connect, listen and share ideas. Nowadays its just another marketing gag showing trailers, but even this is useless because they literally killed all of their games, for the quick buck.
Despite what everyone is saying, isn't it probably that they're part of Microsoft now? Microsoft probably wants to revamp BlizzCon in its own image or something.
Aw shucks man, I was looking forward to some live announcement of a new gender queer safe horny Zimbabwean muslim astrophysicist OW2 hero that cares a lot about feeding the poor.
They cancelled their only major in development project, OW2 and Diablo 4 are a joke, and the WoW expansions were already announced 6 months ago.
They have nothing cooking, and nothing to show for it. Blizzard is truly a dead husk of a shell of its former self.
2018 - folks paid actual money to be told their favorite IP is becoming a mobile pay to win.
"B, but you've got the hardware to play our mediocre pay to win scheme! What's the problem!?"
I'm disappointed that Blizzcon is cancelled - I enjoyed watching the bad press. I guess enough people have learned their lesson???
No wonder, they have nothing to show.
The highlight of the last Blizzcon was Metzen begging players to come back to wow, and teaser for 3 major patches. Blizzard has nothing at the moment.
They do say they’re planning multiple in person events for warcrafts 30th anniversary. Isn’t that also November when blizzcon is? That’s most likely where the event budget is going instead.
What would they have shown or celebrated?
"Hey guys, here's to a year of flops, cancelations and continued horrible PR!!"
This is probably the best move that have made as a company in a while.. 🤦♂️
Probably release a limited edition 20th anniversary digital item collection across the IPs for a stupid amount of money and milk the whales for everything they have.
They'll find a way to micro transaction every cent they can out of it.
And expect a tip when you're done...
Surprised I’m one of the few that thinks this is a good thing. Not forcing results, trailers, expansions around announcements is healthy. If they don’t have a good enough show, let them do it next year. With increased dev time for aaa games, fewer blitz cons seems like a logical step!
Cya next year, hopefully, with a great show.
They could have just taken our money and announced another mobile game.
I dont see a reason for blizz on this year, unless they release a new game i dont even see point of blizz on for next year either, they already annaunced their 3 up coming wow expansions so unless we're getting closer to the release of the 12th expansion, there isnt much to have blizz on for, and the hype for their other games is definetly not enough for a whole blizzcon
I think the biggest thing to consider is why hold a blizzcon.
Blizzcon covers a very large range of different players (wow, diablo, starcraft, hearthstone, OW) With each of these player bases shirnking maybe holding a huge event for all these games is no longer that worth it.
If you look at other similar gaming conventions such as ff14's or path of exile e.t.c. They are much smaller events that are more focused. If they were to do a wowcon and did booked an venue that actually fit the number of expected attendees then that would do alot better than a blizzcon in todays market.
Also Microsoft now owns Activsion-Blizzard, there is little reason for them to have one of their companys do their own event when they can pack any annoucements into their own and cut costs which they are going to do given how much they spent on them.
People acting like it’s this reason or that reason. Guys it’s about one thing and one thing only. Money. Thats it. Costs too much when they can just merge this event with Microsoft events and not have to rent out an entire venue
Edit: there’s been plenty of blizzcons where the expansion was already announced fyi
They had a meeting to go over BC '24 announcements, and then realized no one in the room brought a presentation.
20 people looking around at each other going, "no, I thought \*you\* had something".
Money… blizzcon costs money… Blizz is not making a lot of those. Making blizzcon wont generate income neither since besides warcraft expansion they have nothing else to show.
They probably have nothing to show. They know people don’t really care about overwatch 2 anymore. Diablo has gone down the drain. Only thing they have that people play are hearthstone and wow.
This is the final nail in the corporate america greed strat--
(a) Get market share by obtaining good products and brands
(b) Nickel and dime the consumer for profits and bad product quality relying on more products with the brand name
(c) Watch the company descend into oblivion
Jack Welch would be proud
They got nothing to show! All it took was one guy saying "Is this some sort of out-of-season April Fool's joke?" to make the whole company look like a circus. One of the best game developers has now become a complete joke of the industry.
I’m curious why. They can’t use Covid as an excuse anymore.
Well they have nothing to share i guess. D4 bad, OW2 dead, Wow expansion in developpment. I'm not surprised
This is what I thought too. They also cancelled their survival game and already announced the next 3 WoW expansions. There's really just nothing to talk about.
> There's really just nothing to talk about. you clearly haven't been paying attention to how shameless these bloodsuckers have gotten. Blizzcon in 2024 would be like: New announcement! “Write that down! WRITE THAT DOWN!!” - Blizzard (probably)
Hol up.... tell me more about this dating sim? Can I buy clothing packs so they can wear more layers as they chastise me for my male gaze?
.that would be the fruit bowl expansion pack
Don’t forget Overwatch: Classic with 6v6!
Honestly sc2 fans will take anything at this point.
You forgot about special hat microtransactions. :)
Surprise surprise, dog water management only caring about profits and not product. Fuckin clowns, not business men.
more like WoW expansion going to be out for months then
It’s never stopped them in the past.
they also weren't as hated in the past
They’re dealing with negative press and trying to revive games people are getting frustrated with Strategically it’s better to hold off until they have more of substance to show off
This or it's possible they'll be using Xbox showcase now as their platform?
It would be right around the wow 20th and Warcraft 30th anniversaries. I'm surprised they weren't able to go big on just those.
Right. What reason is there to have one lol. They got a lot of work to do before a Blizzcon is warranted.
the best answer I can agree with. you my friend are 100% correct
Man typing this out just hit me in the feels :(
>Man typing this out just hit me in the feels :( You won't have to if Blizzard wasn't so crappy nowadays
They shouldn’t make anymore Diablos anyways. Let the legacy die with what dignity it has left.
I'm just waiting for Kotaku to blame Asmongold for this
Because they've been a shitty gaming company for over a decade now. "Blizzard" that actually had a reason to hold BlizzCons, is long gone. Same for me. I just play classic WoW cause it's what I grew up playing. I don't fuck with any of the new shit.
At least we'll always have the memories of raiding the lactation room.
That Overwatch trailer still hits though.
Another franchise they left to rot, the Starcraft IP is incredibly popular yet so underused.
There is not much to announce. They are riding of re-releases and old IP.
Money hole.
Diablo had their market snatched by PoE, while D3 and D4 are casual-fied boring games that don't scratch my D2 itch. I played D2 compulsively, bought D3 and found it meh, didn't even buy D4. Nearly none of my friends who played D2 are playing D4 now. Diablo 4 is suppose to be getting an expansion later this year iirc but the games so dead noone really cares, the arpg die hards are more focused on poe2.
They skipped years before Covid so it's not unusual either way
blizz con used to be about fans and developers connecting. I guess there really is .... nothing to see here ...
they got no new games...
Microsoft
They're still trying to figure out how to convert blizzcon to a live-service model
They probably want to combine it with the xbox showcase.
sometime in 2025.... welcome to the Microsoft Games Showcase, now featuring Blizzcon!
at the last blizzcon it was a shitshow it took hours to get people inside tbrough the line, and it was super fucking hot outside. then they ran out of physical goody bags that are promised. there was an issue with the VIP seating because it was empty but everyone else ran out of seats and they left it empty (im going off my shitty memory) they announced the next 3 xpacs for wow alrdy. hearthstone announcement was very memey because they already announced everything on twitter like a week before blizzcon.. it gave off the vibe of a manager calling a meeting to read an email that was sent to everyone already, waste of time. Oy!
They have literally nothing to present at BlizzCon...
They wasted all the money buying breast milk and don't have anything to showcase since non of their games really matters anymore
Wait… What? It’s WoW 20th anniversary…
Yeah, cancel Blizzcon, you can still have a WoWCon ft. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.
So? They will just discount it, add anniversary event with some shitty pet or mount as a reward and call it a day.
Watching the steady decline of Blizzard over the years has been sad.
This needs more upvotes. It's watching my teen years get consumed by corporate greed and ESG scores
Agreed man
I remember when I was in like 4-5th grade and MoP dropped my dad took me to the midnight release in Irvine on a school night and it was the most awesome experience of my life. Agreed
Blizzard died in 2008

Yeah i was gonna say, some of us have been feeling that way since the early 2000s. Doesn't matter how they puppet the cadaver the parts that made blizzard a beloved game company rotted away looong ago.
Watching game devs get ruined by greedy shareholders has singlehandedly made me a socialist.
there woudlve been no blizzard in the first place if socialism was in place
Enterprise is good. Publicly traded companies trying to please their stockholders with short term gains at the expense of the health of the company, their employees, and their customers is bad.
It started with WoW, it was the first game that wasn't Blizzard quality but they made so much money on it they just kept milking it
Quite the opposite, it's pretty good to see this shitty and immoral company receive what it deserves.
It’s been entertaining
It would be half blizzcon and half furry convention.
So nothing would be lost if they all fell into a hole?
at least there'll be great breastmilk smoothies.
No surprise. They haven't actually needed a convention for years now. Blizzard hasn't been a real gaming company in over a decade. What are they doing to do? Announce their next remaster or canceled project?
WoW Mobile, OW Mobile, Starcraft Mobile, Revive the survival game on mobile. There are endless possibilities, what do you not have a phone?
Good guy Blizzard, helping all their fans save money so that they can buy the next D4 skins/WoW mounts/OW skins and whatever DLC they are pushing out this year

well said. i remember the wristband fiasco was taking hours for people outside to even get in
They are still working out how to do just one big show that highlights all of Microsoft Gaming. That is my guess for the delay.
This actually makes sense, Blizzard doesn't have the IP line it used to have and they do continuous campfires for D4 and Dev Talks for WoW so there isn't much to talk about there. They Microsoft now, can’t waste money on shit like that.
A bunch of people who'll sing in tandem "D4 bad D4 dogshit" would be hilarious to watch online or to be a part of at Blizzcon, idk why they backed out
Attendees of Blizzcon will eat almost anything up. They could announce Hello Kitty be the next boss of the WoW expansion and people would cheer.
And nothing of value was lost...
Is this an out of season april fools joke?
When you have nothing to show....
probably cuz there were a lot of problems to work on internally. (im trying to be nice ok) hahaha
But don't they have phones?
God I wish they would just surrender their IP to people who give a shit.
Even they know they got nothing to offer
Is this an off season Christmas gift?
Crazy, just think of all the canceled content they could have announced
Death of a Game... studio.
![gif](giphy|7k2LoEykY5i1hfeWQB)
Tickets sales looking bad.
They just dont have anything interesting to show this year that all
Actually pretty sad, not just for the "haha blizzard bad only dead games now" memes. I mean what would they even talk about? Good choice, I guess.

Aw shucks man, I was looking forward to some live announcement of a new gender queer safe horny Zimbabwean muslim astrophysicist OW2 hero that cares a lot about feeding the poor.
This is the asmon sub here, not the "I am a living POS with down syndrome"
Blizzard cancelled
Blizzard is ubisoft 2.0. Dont bother anymore.
They cancelled their only major in development project, OW2 and Diablo 4 are a joke, and the WoW expansions were already announced 6 months ago. They have nothing cooking, and nothing to show for it. Blizzard is truly a dead husk of a shell of its former self.
Disappointing wouldn't say Microsoft is fully at fault but it kinda stinks
Good. When was the last good blizzcon anyways? Even E3 that used to be the biggest event for games died.
2018 - folks paid actual money to be told their favorite IP is becoming a mobile pay to win. "B, but you've got the hardware to play our mediocre pay to win scheme! What's the problem!?" I'm disappointed that Blizzcon is cancelled - I enjoyed watching the bad press.
"Hey guys, here's to a year of flops, cancelations and continued horrible PR!!" This is probably the best move that have made as a company in a while.. 🤦♂️
Is this another later April Fool's joke?
Microsoft aint paying for it, so if u get anything it would be at a Microsoftcon
They should just turn their business to gaming casino. With a gambling addiction warning
just let blizz be blizz
That's a shame, would have been good content
Damn. The 20th anniversary too. I wonder what they’ll do instead.
Probably release a limited edition 20th anniversary digital item collection across the IPs for a stupid amount of money and milk the whales for everything they have. They'll find a way to micro transaction every cent they can out of it. And expect a tip when you're done...
Bioware will soon have company.
Where the fuck are my RTS and glorified modded maps?!?!?!?!
Well, blizzard keeps on shitting everything they‘ve built so far. No wonder they would cancel Blizzcon.
no1 talks about starcraft anymore :C
Blizzard is toxic for everyone, good ridance.
i thought they were just merging with the microsoft game show but they do plan it do it new year so i gues they literally have nothing to show
Blizzard fumble no way.. that's crazy..
And nothing of value has been lost. Unfortunately.
What, you guys don’t have conventions?
blizzard dead…. again
20 years anniversary :D:D:D
Why they don't think announcing 5 more mobile games will get everyone psyched?
And nothing of value was lost.
Where is Blizzard?
diablo 4 so bad they don't want more bad press. plus blizzard got sold. new management prob wants to save money.
All they’d have to do is bring HoTS back for an easy W come on Lizzard you cowards!
When you forget to do the homework for class so you fake a sickie ahead of time
2025 warcraft 4 and Starcraft 3 release confirmed
Blizzard, a once iconic game studio, has fallen very very far.
Yeah this tends to happen when you haven't released a good product since 2016.
Blizzard is a shit company and it's catching up to them.
Loll’olol… they had the power of the sun in their hands by the way fu bobby
Blizzard in the crapper?
it's hilarious how microsoft keeps buying dying studios and somehow sony still cries about it
Why can’t they just release 250$ p2w dlc and kill the company already /s
Money. Thats it. Costs too much when they can just merge this event with Microsoft events and not have to rent out an entire venue Edit: there’s been plenty of blizzcons where the expansion was already announced fyi
starcraft 2 was the last great blizzard game
Because they have nothing to say
That's what they get for shitting on overwatch and Diablo. 🤷♂️ They can fix this by bringing back the overwatch 1 servers .
Scared if protest thats why
Oh, I see they're releasing a paid expansion for D4 before they fixed D4.
This makes me a lil sad ngl
Sad to see grandpa getting old and getting ready to die
They had a meeting to go over BC '24 announcements, and then realized no one in the room brought a presentation. 20 people looking around at each other going, "no, I thought \*you\* had something".
Money… blizzcon costs money… Blizz is not making a lot of those. Making blizzcon wont generate income neither since besides warcraft expansion they have nothing else to show.
Been to 5 of them in the beginning. They were super fun then, but not tickets dont even sell out and not much hype into going.
Oh no anyways...
They probably have nothing to show. They know people don’t really care about overwatch 2 anymore. Diablo has gone down the drain. Only thing they have that people play are hearthstone and wow.
It's only the 20th anniversary of WoW, why would they want to celebrate it with their players. Blizzard can suck my big fat wiener.
Doesn't matter. Blizzard has been dead to me for years.
Short Blizzard.
This is the final nail in the corporate america greed strat-- (a) Get market share by obtaining good products and brands (b) Nickel and dime the consumer for profits and bad product quality relying on more products with the brand name (c) Watch the company descend into oblivion Jack Welch would be proud
They got nothing to show! All it took was one guy saying "Is this some sort of out-of-season April Fool's joke?" to make the whole company look like a circus. One of the best game developers has now become a complete joke of the industry.
Good! Have it every other year like before, they can gather up some stuff to show then.
I remember the drones thinking Microsoft would save the company...oh sweet summer gamers~
I dunno about saving, but this is Microsoft making the right call. Assuming the convention was profitable, Bobby would have ran it anyway.
