Pay the 2K? If you can't pay it by the due date, ring then up and negotiate a payment schedule. You won't be in trouble if you pay it. A tax owing position is not unusual or anything to worrh about. Double check your return though and see if they made a mistake as well

geiko99

Ah I'm perfectly fine to pay the $2k. I was worried that I'd be in trouble or something like that given its been 2 months since the due date.

lemachet

At worst they might put "general interest surcharge" or whatever they call it but it won't be much

Qzjo77gTUs6zAQmE

ATO auditors are knocking on your door right now.

Alot_Isnt_A_FKN_Word

You don't need to call, you can create a payment plan online. You'll have it done online before you'd even finish listening to all the phone prompts lol

pwnitat0r

Straight to gaol

[deleted]

Don't pay your tax bill? Jail. Don't check your mygov inbox? Believe it or not, jail.

onepoundfeesh

Pay back too much of your tax bill? Straight to jail

invincibl_

Overcook your books? Also jail.

Mysterious-Funny-431

I know this is a correct way to spell it but it always sounds like 'goal' in my head

Alot_Isnt_A_FKN_Word

Literally the *only* place I see that ye olde spelling is on Reddit, I swear this place is the guardian and protector of that word! 😂

Dav2310675

I do go on a few subs that have a high US presence and post. I continually have to check that I minimise using the word 'fortnightly' as it leads to confusion sometimes and comments about quaintness at best. I still prefer 'fortnightly' to 'biweekly' though!

ribbonsofnight

who cares what Americans say. Exposing them to culture is commendable.

bloodthirsty_emu

Internal autocorrect!

A couple of months late is nothing compared to some of the cases the ATO has to deal with. Some people are decades behind in filing their returns. By comparison this is doddle.

[deleted]

Yeah just pay it. It happens, you wont die for it. Just dont leave it for decades because they can and probably will chase you up for it.

ThinkerInResidents

Congratulations! I consider it a win if I get a bill instead of a return. I'd rather have my money in my own pocket working hard for me than the ATO sitting on it all year only to 'refund' it without interest.

ConsiderationEmpty10

Didn’t they email you to tell you? Notice of assessment?

geiko99

Yes they did, but it's only in the 'mygov' inbox. Ie you have to sign in and go into your inbox to see it. Nothing came through to my regular emails.

jezwel

Setup a notification in MyGov to send you an email notification. I also had an ATO debt and was notified this way.

nymie5a

Note that any interest is a tax deduction on your next return.

Ive only ever seen them threaten jail after many decades of non payment. Op is probably safe for now 😂

FalconSixSix

Probably going to jail. RIP OP

Galloping_Scallop

Nah, just pay it. The ATO is pretty chill to be honest. I missed a couple of years of fillings and they never chased me for it nor fined me for it being late when I got around to putting the forms in. Make sure your contact details are up to date as they usually notify when something is awaiting your attention.

voriax2

I'm curious to know how you made it 7 months into the financial year without realising you had a tax debt..? Like, not to be rude or anything, but how does that happen? Did you do your own tax? Didn't it give you an indication of what you'd get / what you'd owe at the time?

Anachronism59

When you were preparing you return you will have seen an estimate (which is almost always correct) of what you owe, or get back. I always check that before I finally click "submit" as a cross check for any silly mistakes. That way you can also ensure you have the money ready when it's due (or plan what to do with any return). One to watch next year.

stillgoing66

When preparing to visit my account to complete last years tax I discovered the same thing. Obviously I hadn’t paid it. All that occurred was it was factored in to the tax return I was completing.

grooomps

I was a few years behind Called them out, asked to sort out a payment plan, no fines or issues at all I think they were just glad I called and they didn't have to chase me up lol
