That’s corporate life for you, the louder (not always the smartest) will usually get ahead. Been in your shoes mate, my ex firm promoted a less experience, not as smart nor productive staff ahead of me, just because that person was closer to the partners than me. I decided to leave immediately. Go somewhere that recognises and values your efforts and contributions instead of

Audit is a great stepping stone to move to corporate

You pretty much auto progress to senior with 2-3 years of experience don’t you? There’s not meant to be any politics involved because it’s literally something where the business can charge you out to clients for more $ and trust you to do more work.

What was the reason given for non promotion?

Some people are favoured, whether its because they're better at their job, or due to other factors - more likeable, more social, better looking, funnier etc. In my experience, it's extremely hard to compete with someone who is favoured, especially if they are actually decent at their job. I've been on both sides - it's amazing when you are the favoured one, all the interesting work, can do no wrong and get all the glory; it's absolutely shite when you're not though... Time to jump ship.

Have you raised this issue with your manager or whoever you directly reports to? Not saying you're not doing great, but instead we might not be aware of what the other person is doing on other engagements that has gotten them better reviews or was able to showcase their ability better. Another explanation can also be they've been at the firm longer and it's normal progression for them and whilst you might be a decent performer, you're not good enough for an early promotion cycle. That said, if you can find a better ops elsewhere, why not?
