Considering that the person you were responding to has made a strong ass statement.
And that you are technically correct.
I’m guessing that there’s some in between stage?
In the end whether they meow or purr or roar.
They are all kitties.
The roaring isn't the only thing that makes a cat a member of panthera, the partial ossification (the term for when cartilage turns into bone) of the hyoid is another trait that makes them distinct, a trait which snow leopards share with the rest of panthera.
You can split felids into two camps, and cheetahs are in the camp that includes the small cats like our housecats. As another comment already mentioned, this camp purrs and the "big cat" camp does not purr. IDK about "second closest" but they are more closely related to housecats than they are to tigers, lions, leopards, and so on.
I believe the distinction is between Panthera (the roaring genus), and Feli***n***ae (the purring/meowing genus), which are each a genus of the Felidae family.
Cheetahs are actually in a seperate genus from the rest, Acinonyx, becuase their claws cant retract which severely limits their ability to climb in exchange for more speed.
Haha! Yeah, it definitely feels a lot like that. He has an obsession with getting on my nightstand, but the last time he did it, he knocked over my water bottle that I was dumb enough to leave open. It was rude as hell. Now I have a crazy sixth sense of knowing when he's up there, and I immediately wake up to block him. I could just give in and clear everything off of the nightstand, but then the big orange tyrant will win!
And cheetahs don't actually have murder mittens. Their claws are like dog claws. Yeah they can cut you but they are built for maximum speed rather than tearing things up like a velociraptor.
How sure are we that big cats can't purr and how did "they" come to this conclusion without letting ME pet any big kitties???
For science, of course.
Also, I can tell that little zoomie kittie fren wants me to pet it.
Well, until they're hungry. "Fluffy" will meow and pester you until you get out the Friskies. Cheetah will run you down, slam into you at 40mph and bite through your throat until you suffocate or bleed out. Still, I want to give it some good scritches. 😊
In the wild they don’t attack humans there are no recorded cases from what I’ve scene. In captivity even they are generally very mild temped and are scaredy-cats who will hide more than anything. Probably just want to be lap cats honestly
I'm just going by all the nature shows I've watched over the years and seen cheetahs flying after an animal and, if they catch it, they hit it hard and try to get at the prey animal's neck. So, I'm putting a stupid human in place of the prey animal and there you go. My little scenario.
Cheetahs are technically small cats The demarcation is whether they purr
Same with cougars/pumas/mountain lions, though their meow is markedly less cute than a cheetahs.
They scream loud.
A mountain lying screaming in the middle of the night will put your sphincter into your lungs. Edit: You know what, I'm leaving the autocorrect fail.
Mountains that scream lies in the middle of the night are terrifying.
M'aiq knows much, but tells some. M'aiq knows many things others do not.
lmao
Yeah but they also chirp like birds so it evens out
Hahahahaha
THEY SCREAM LOUD.
You haven't heard their cute lil mews then 🥺
There is a domestic puma that meows when happy she is from I’am puma
Yup big cats are from the genus panthera which is tigers, lions, Jaguars, leopards and snow leopards. Big cats can roar while small cats can't.
Incidentally snow leopards are a big cat that can't roar.
That's cool I didn't know that. Snow leopards would be the odd one out I'd think. I love how Jaguars have the strongest bite of them.
Biting caimans on the back of the skull
They're also closely related to bobcats/lynx

Snow leopards yowl and chuff, they are most closely related to tigers within the panthera genus, funnily enough! (Panthera being the 5 big cats)
I hear what you’re saying. I don’t disagree. All cats are cats. Whether purr or roar. I love them all.
The roaring isn't the only thing that makes a cat a member of panthera, the partial ossification (the term for when cartilage turns into bone) of the hyoid is another trait that makes them distinct, a trait which snow leopards share with the rest of panthera.
I am glad someone else said it. I was about to comment on that
Last time I pointed out out I got downvoted to oblivion
Aren't cheetahs the second next close cat to domestication or something? I'm like 10 percent wrong on that but I know the Egyptians had them as pets.

They always looked like dog paws to me, especially in the video above
Ahhh that makes sense and why Egyptians used them as domesticated pets. Thanks.
My great grandmother had two that she kept as pets on her farm in Namibia.
Your great grandmother had some awesome stories I’m sure
I’m not sure but some people have servals as pets.
If you feed them a fish, believe it or not they actually turn into house cats and can be vital to keep your house safe from bomb threats
If not fren, why fren shaped?
My toxic trait is thinking that I could pet her 💀
You probably could! Rumor has it that cheetahs are friendlier than we think.
I mean, it’s not unheard of… https://www.wecb.fm/wildlife-photographer-wakes-up-from-a-nap-under-a-tree-with-a-sleeping-cheetah-against-him/
she's even giving a little mlem in the photo
that is absolutely adorable
The 2nd meow was so precious
I played the video with sound and it woke up my cat who was sound asleep next to me. Even though I'm awake because of him, I still felt bad.
It's called Stockholm Syndrome and there is help lol

Orange? Oh, well in that case, he can't help himself; it's never his turn with the braincell hahaha
This is why you should always have a supply of toys and catnip
And one empty box just to be sure.
Just with murder mittens " )
Luckily it's extremely rare for them to murder us with those mittens.
And cheetahs don't actually have murder mittens. Their claws are like dog claws. Yeah they can cut you but they are built for maximum speed rather than tearing things up like a velociraptor.
I love cat facts
the cutest tiny paws 🐾
They are pretty damn cute
😍💕

Cheetah aren't "Big Cats", so they purr and meow
Yeahh but I wouldn’t consider a cheetah a *big cat*
Cheetahs are so precious. They're literally just giant scaredy cats. This whole monologue was probably them saying, "You're scary 🥺"
Danger friend.
More like a medium cat
PET THE KITTY!
I'mma pet it, you can't stop me
Cheetahs are beautiful, man.
Are they?
Nope!
In many ways, sure. They’re felines. But they aren’t SMALL cats.
so beautiful !! 🥹😍
Amazing, amazing creatures.
I'mma pet it, you can't stop me
Big cat needs boop
Give her kitty treats! She needs kitty treats!
Now that I think about it, cheetahs are built more like dogs than cats
Yeah except that Big cat will f*ck you up!
big cats this, small cats that... anyone show me some medium cats please
Assholes?
There is a rescue society in South Africa that has cheetah interactions
I need to stop watching videos like this because it makes me want to pat them, and one day that will get me killed 😂
Let’s domesticate dog sized cats.
Well, until they're hungry. "Fluffy" will meow and pester you until you get out the Friskies. Cheetah will run you down, slam into you at 40mph and bite through your throat until you suffocate or bleed out. Still, I want to give it some good scritches. 😊
Send me a link of proof of one of these cheetah attacks you're referencing. They don't really fuck with humans from my understanding.
In the wild they don’t attack humans there are no recorded cases from what I’ve scene. In captivity even they are generally very mild temped and are scaredy-cats who will hide more than anything. Probably just want to be lap cats honestly

i’m thinking it was meant as comedy
