That's what reddit is for ;) I understand, though. It can be frustrating when people don't allow themselves to learn of its greatness and power, but everything isn't for everyone, sadly. Even though I really feel like EVERYONE can take something from this show. But hey, your tribe is here. š
I can relate. It's not everyone's cup of tea.
I honestly think, when they made the show they only had depressed people as the target group in mind.
I can imagine some "normal" people feel like the show is dragging their mood down and/or they can't relate to the majority of characters at all. Especially to Bojack.
When I first started watching the first season, I also felt like the whole vibe was too childish. So there's also that.
I love bojack but i think the theme is too sad, dark, and borderline controversial for most people. Its more about a depiction of mental illness unlike the typical lighthearted sitcoms. Its not for everyone but there are still hard life lesson in the show that can only be taken away by people who experienced that specific side of life.
It is kinda slow too in the first episodes and took me a while to progress the show normally. These are the reasons why I dont usually recommend bojack to anyone. I just tell myself that theyre not gonna like it even though the show has a special place in my heart.
The issue that I ran into when promoting bojack was that most of them thought it would be too sad. I convinced them with Todd and something I call "Healing Opportunities". Basically the opposite of Trigger Warnings. I think the show can be really healing but that's often forgotten
Tbh no offense to you but also constantly praising a show you like in front of others and asking them to watch it isn't what would draw them in. You just need to let them go at it if/when they want to.
All the time that people kept telling me to try xyz made me go in and then ask myself "ok when is this getting good". IDK that ruins the experience
It's going in blind that actually piques someone's interest if it's supposed to.
But if a random scene is supposed to pique anyone's interest it's probably the Bojack tripping scene
Maybe don't scream at them. People don't like being screamed at.
Jokes aside, I understand, Bojack Horseman is a hard sell. On the one hand you've got people who watch the first episode or two and go "blahh so it's just Family Guy but with talking animals." Or you get the people who get past the wonky first impression and go "blahh it's too depressing."
Bojack is one of the best animated shows out there, but it definitely doesn't seem to be for everyone, despite *seeming* like it should be. It expertly balances goofy humor, biting satire, moments of genuine humanity (horsemanity?) and pathos, arcs that are depressing, disturbing, inspirational... There's very little like Bojack out there. But yeah, it's a weirdly hard sell.
I talk with my adhd friend about it and I try to tell my bpd friends about it because it's so relatable. But yeah I get the frustration there's so much that's great about it
Itās definitely a tough show to recommend to people, at first it just comes off as another raunchy and cynical adult cartoon, which to be fair it certainly has elements of, and if I wasnāt able to enjoy that aspect of it I probably wouldnāt have been able to get into it either.
What I do is I put on the show when Iām on discord with friends (usually how we interact) or on the rare times I have them over. But when I know thereās people watching I change it to a crazy episode like Escape from L.A or Ruthie. That usually gets them a little curious or like āwtf.ā Obviously I read the person and the room, if I know someone went through hard times I pick one theyāre less likely to get triggered by. I donāt think Iād ever show, Show Stopper as a first episode to anyone, let alone some of the people in my group. But showing them stuff like Good Damage is a good way to show them why Iām obsessed with this show.
Do they end up watching on their own? No, but we canāt force anyone to do anything, we can only really start a conversation, which is very different than constantly asking ādid you watch BJH yet?ā Itād be like asking ādid you get it? Did you get the joke?ā
I avoided it because I thought it was a new Family Guy, but with animals. It wasnāt until season 5 that I even checked it out, and I was surprised it was poignant and I fell in love. Until then, it really did look like just another bandwagon.
I mean it's not a show you can just watch at any time or that everyone will like. It covers very dark subject matter. And the people you recommend it to who do like that stuff might think it's something else from the animation
Depends when it clicks with people. Somehow I knew people that had the same thing with breaking bad but after a few more episodes, it clicks and they realise itās amazing.
Totally. I think everyone Iāve told to watch it hasnāt.
Iāve said it before and Iāll say it again: there are 2 kinds of people in this world; those who have watched Bojack Horseman, and those who havent.
I think people who canāt feel connected to the show usually donāt have the patience to keep watching past S01E08 where Bojackās story really start to unfold. Such a pity.
i have a friend that i know would absolutely love it but they think it will depress them too much and hit too close to homeā¦and i canāt really argue with that. it tore me apartā¦but in the best way
iām gonna be honest, if someone kept pressuring me to watch it i probably never would have. people who keep telling you to watch shows are annoying. hyping it up also sets their expectations way higher
Just screenshotted this post. Debating weather or not to send it to my friend Matt. I love this show and try to get him to watch it here and there, but he never does.
The trick is to not stuff it down their throat everytime you see them. For me i only mentioned it a couple of times where you talk about it passionately and that should do the trick if you are convincing enough and if they've got half a brain.
My best friend won't watch it, even though I know he'll love it, because he claims he only hears Gob Bluths voice. I have called him out on this, he liked Twisted Metal and never thought twice
Iām a dismissive avoidant.
Iām working on myself.
I LOVED Bojack Horseman when I was full on DA.
It felt so relatable and I loved hearing Stanley Tucciās character tell Bojack off when he was dying from cancer.
Right now, when I watch it,it feels very dark and fucked up.
But itās still a good show.
you donāt need them, you got this entire subreddit to talk to! ā¤ļø maybe they donāt wanna watch it because all they see is a talking horse. Theyāll never understand
I usually hate this kind of cartoon - Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Archer etc. But this one has a lot of heart. The characters are cynical but not the show.
Same situation with my brother. I tell him that Bojack is one of is one of the greatest (arguably the greatest) animated shows of all time. He tells me that he watched the first two episodes and "just couldn't get into it."
Well, a different show that both of us love is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I keep telling him, "Book 1 of Avatar wasn't that great, either. The show didn't really get warmed up until Book 2. Same with Bojack and Season 2."
Maybe invite your friends over for some drinks or something and throw on a couple of episodes, then they might be interested in it and finish it at home
lead by saying that they may not like the first 6 episodes. Make them hang on until say anything and especially telescope because thatās when the show really gets going.
I have the same problem, recommended to a lot of people and they just think this is a āgeneric family guy type of showā and do not want to watch it at all.
Kind of unrelated, but I started watching BoJack Horesman in French on Netflix because I was in French 3 at school and wanted to absorb the language more. The names hit different in French tbh it's kind of funny.
Well you know what they say. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him go to rehab.
Fool me once, shame on you. But teach a man to fool me and I shall be fooled for the rest of my life. š§
"Fool me once? Shame on you. Fool me twice, I PUNCH YOU'R FACE!"

the thing is most people stop because of the childish part at first and mb would have enjoyed the later seasons
I love bojack but i think the theme is too sad, dark, and borderline controversial for most people. Its more about a depiction of mental illness unlike the typical lighthearted sitcoms. Totally makes sense
The issue that I ran into when promoting bojack was that most of them thought it would be too sad. I convinced them with Todd and something I call "Healing Opportunities". Basically the opposite of Trigger Warnings. I think the show can be really healing but that's often forgotten
lol most of my friends thought itās a failed family guy ripoff
What a tasteless comparison šš

That was my experience the first several times I tried to get into it, the first episode can be off putting
I think they do flashback cutaway gaga in only the first episode, but anything after that feels nothing like FG.
WTF?! It has nothing to do with Family Guy
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Man same. I watched first 5 episodes then left it for over a year.
Even episode 2? I love that one, but I'm heavily biased š what would yall say are some good starters then to pique interest?
It's going in blind that actually piques someone's interest if it's supposed to. But if a random scene is supposed to pique anyone's interest it's probably the Bojack tripping scene
I was going to say Downer Ending was one I'd recommend, so I feel that.
The quality of episode 2 was the only reason I didn't stop after episode 3. I really hated that episode the first time around.

donāt tell them to just āwatch itā, sit down w em and watch a particularly good episode!!! i like fish out of water for that, personally
Thatās the first episode I watched!
I watched my favorite one with my friend where bojack just talked in the eulogy the entire episode. That did not help me sell the show. š
What I do is I put on the show when Iām on discord with friends (usually how we interact) or on the rare times I have them over. Did you watch Bojack? Horseman, obviously.
Hey, isnāt that the horse from Horsinā Around?
Same. They think Iām nuts
I avoided it because I thought it was a new Family Guy, but with animals. It wasnāt until season 5 that I even checked it out, and I was surprised it was poignant and I fell in love. Until then, it really did look like just another bandwagon.
Seriously. I want my husband to watch to we can discuss but alas.
Husband is tough š
Maybe don't scream at them. Yeah same thing happened to me. But the ones that thugged it out love it now
Lol

one friend of mine actually started watching it and finished in a month. now iām worriedā¦.
Lolol
i have a friend that i know would absolutely love it but they think it will depress them too much and hit too close to homeā¦and i canāt really argue with that. it tore me apartā¦but in the best way

Whenever you hang out with them, you must insist on watching bojack. Monopolize your TV. Commandeer your friends TVs. The bojack system is the way.
Isnt that a good thing? You will have good friends.
š¢š¢
Dont worry, horses know whats best for them and thus they will not do things that are bad for them (theorically) (I dunno did I spell it good)
No u messed up š¤lol. But I gotchu
Thank
Did you get that?

Most of my friends find it depressing but I don't so I just reference it when it's appropriate in conversation.
Just screenshotted this post. Debating weather or not to send it to my friend Matt. I love this show and try to get him to watch it here and there, but he never does.
Send him right away
CAN WE PLEASEEEE TALK AB IT
About time
The trick is to not stuff it down their throat everytime you see them. For me i only mentioned it a couple of times where you talk about it passionately and that should do the trick if you are convincing enough and if they've got half a brain.
i tell everyone to start at e5
I recommend it with a grain of salt. I tell people to watch that one when they've prepared themselves for such an emotional experience
It's hard to describe. "It's a cartoon horse that's an alcoholic .. his agent is a kitty cat... his costars are human..."
Itās not for everyone and thatās ok. I donāt know anyone else who loves this show the way I do , thatās what Reddit is for š¤
My best friend won't watch it, even though I know he'll love it, because he claims he only hears Gob Bluths voice. I have called him out on this, he liked Twisted Metal and never thought twice

How can people watch the Neil McBeal episode and not love it? Did you just say the troops are jerks?!
Maybe invite your friends over for some drinks or something and throw on a couple of episodes, then they might be interested in it and finish it at home
lead by saying that they may not like the first 6 episodes. Make them hang on until say anything and especially telescope because thatās when the show really gets going.
Same. To each their own.Ā
The first few episodes are rough to be fair
I have the same problem, recommended to a lot of people and they just think this is a āgeneric family guy type of showā and do not want to watch it at all.
