I’m not entirely confirmed how it works but I *believe* the game has different borders depending on wether you have hitboxes on you or not. So because you were not stunned or attacking you could go fairly deep but after your recovery opening up hitboxes you were too far for a kill hitbox
Another option is that lance recovery moves you backwards and lower ever so slightly during charge. You maybe were just on the border of it, then the charge lowered you into it.
Regardless, this kinda thing happens a fair lot. Mostly with lance recovery. Its weird

The lance recovery goes down slightly while you charge it. I guess you started the charge up extremely close to the bottom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
