Hot take: this road is a cultural historical landmark in the same way the Rte. 66 and El Camino Real is and we should put more effort into saving it than a typical highway.
That does not mean we spend a $1B+/mi on saving a 2 lane road. What it means is giving up later than we normally would for a road of it’s size
Much of Route 66 is not maintained at all. In particular, I drove the stretch east from Barstow, and it was very rough, with cracked and buckled pavement.
The alternate route is US 101. If they try to go just a bit inland from hwy 1, there are mountains they would have to go over or through. Very expensive. If they don't fix it, they'll just have to block it off, and the dead end roads would be largely unused. Better for the environment, perhaps, but the local economy would disappear.
Similar situation to Devil's Slide. Big Sur doesn't get the same level of daily traffic but the tourist dollars the area generates may justify new inland roads being constructed in some spots. The remains of the old road can be converted to trails that cyclists will love.
100%.
All the repairs do is put good money after bad. This environment will eat the road every year. Maybe fire, flood, landslide. But whatever cause, it's coming.

ITT: People who don't understand that a road built through mountains has to undergo regular repairs.
They need to stop with just doing repairs and work on re-routing the road. It will never end otherwise.

For real. It should be a national monument.

That's not a hot take. Highway 1 is an absolute treasure and we must preserve it. The stretch of the highway going through Big Sur is roadtrip heaven.
Most people know there’s some risk driving this route. It’s rare but like it shouldn’t go away.
Looking at the geography the route is unsustainable in so many locations. Only a matter of time

They have done that in various locations
What about building a bridge instead

Do they ever end? As soon as they fix this slide, there will be another.
Well yeah... eventually it will slide off enough material to be more stable. Could take a few thousand years though.
Never. It will never end. This road will continue to fall into the water. And they’ll continue to fix it. And that’s how it will go.
As they should it is one of the greatest drives in the world
Isn’t that caltrans motto? “Construction starts… no telling when it will end”
no their Motto is "screw anybody not in a car"
Make it a toll road with a yearly low cost cost to locals in Monterey and SLO counties. Charge the snot out of the tourists
No thanks
