It costs them basically nothing to post the fake adverts, so the āprofit marginā on one victim is huge, they probably even have a script grabbing photos from auto trader and posting ads automatically
When you click the profile theyāll have 20+ adds all for the same or similar prices.
The profiles are hacked and can be any age, all with a full post history visible.
Really the problem is Facebook allows the ads to stay up for so long. Iāve came across ads for cars for sale in my area, check the profile and the owner is located in a different country. Ad posted 4 weeks previous. Why do they allow this.
Morons also get their accounts hacked, and just move onto another profile instead of reporting it hacked
exactly, my account was hijacked and listed 100s of these cars, it took me a few weeks to get the account back, but the damage was done.
I've got 100s of messages and they must have used a script that directed the person interested to contact them directly via email (that's where they ask for a deposit). It was all people local to me as well, so I look like a bit of a dick. I can't even message these people to warn them as I'm banned from marketplace indefinitely.
> Morons also get their accounts hacked, and just move onto another profile instead of reporting it hacked
Tell me youāve never had a Facebook account hacked without telling me. It is fucking impossible to get the account back if the hacker changes the contact details, there is no point of contact and the support tools just loop you round in a circle.
Only account I ever had hacked was my RuneScape account when I was like 12 lol.
Learnt my lesson though and itās never happened since. Getting hacked on Facebook shows real clumsiness. All of the information and linked accounts they get, that makes you a moron lol
Also check their other things for sale. I've seen pages with hundreds of cars all at the exact same price, all clearly nicked photos and descriptions from other listings.
My guess is an account gets hijacked and they have some script generate loads of these
FB really need to do more to clamp down on it as it's making it unusable. Not just cars, Camping gear, bikes, tools, everything
This. I've been reporting these accounts for ages. They go away for a bit as accounts get shut down, but they always come back.
Just click on the person's profile, see 20-30 cars all for sale and too cheap. Report for it being a scam and carry on.
The more people who report the faster they are removed.
They donāt want people to be less suspicious, is the simple answer
If you see Ā£10k you might think itās legit, contact them and they spend time replying before you say ānah Iām not sending a depositā. For them thatās time wasted
Theyād rather put it at Ā£5k and have sensible people ignore it entirely as an obvious scam, that way they only get messages from gullible idiots who are likely to pay the deposit
It sounds counter-intuitive but they *want* to weed more people out early
Exactly this. That's why spam emails have poor grammar and misspellings - sure the scammers could write it in perfect English, but that wouldn't help weed out the intelligent people who'd be a waste of time later down the line.
I've seen some believable ones, one that comes to mind was a Peugeot 306 cabrio for Ā£1200. Pretty reasonable price for one of those. I was interested till I checked the other listings and saw 200 cars for sale
Came to say exactly the same. Know of a lad from South Shields who used to make a fortune doing just that. Said he would put it on quite cheaper then would ask for 1k deposits as heās getting a lot of interest. Said the police didnāt give a fuck about that sort of money so he just made a fortune from fleecing others.
Go by the rule if it looks to good to be true, then it probably is.
Deposit scam
* advertise desirable car at very low price, using photos taken from the internet
* eager buyer contacts you
* ask for a deposit
* buyer pays deposit electronically in a way that can't be reversed
* seller fucks off with the deposit, closes their FB account, buyer can't get their money back
* repeat
**If something is too good to be true, it probably is**
2018 Audi TT for Ā£4k? Yep, that's too good to be true.
> Surely people donāt believe this rubbish
There's one born every minute
Check out the various legal advice subreddits, or r/scams. It happens a LOT.
Thousands of people see the ads. If 0.1% of them fall for it, that's a nice payday.
Also used cars are so expensive now. If you haven't been looking for used cars for a few years, this price (or some a little closer to reality) might not seem completely ridiculous.
Other Day I saw a a GT86 for 5K. Took about 5 seconds to find the same ad on auto trader for 12.
You do occasionally get proper bargains, but not like this.
It doesn't from what I have seen, reported loads of these and you just get a message back saying their profile and posts doesn't breach community standards.
I sit down and report 10s and 10s of them when I'm bored. (I find it vaguely interesting learning to recognise the scam listings, finding the "tells", following them around etc. Don't judge me š) and they do get taken down. Not all of them, often not quickly, but it does happen. Facebook could definitely be better at it.
I've not had a single one of the mentioned replies and I must have reported... I dunno... literally hundreds of ads. Cars, furniture, computers, scooters.
That is because you don't get a notification when they do nothing on something or someone you reported, is zero chance they took action on everything you have reported.
If you get that response there is no notification, it is in the support inbox, a list of people you reported are there and it will have a message, you only get notifications on reports they act on.
Not cars but seeing stupidly cheap new furniture and kids treehouses for fake prices has made marketplace a no go area. facebook marketplace had such potential.
Iāve heard that some scammers think if youāre stupid enough to believe the price, then youāre more likely to be scammed so they do these things knowing that cynical people wonāt bother
Just seen one of these near me, 6k for a 1 year old hybrid yaris top spec. Checked the guys profile and there was another 30 cars stupidly low price same description.
My mums Facebook account was hacked a few weeks ago and the hackers started listing around 70 different cars for sale on Marketplace. What I found was that when someone messaged asking about a car, the scanners directed them to a website.
I don't doubt that the scam is monetary for the deposit, but there's also the potential for things like malware installation as well via the website.
if they send you a message like āitās not my ad itās my sisters, contact this email address ***@gmail.comā itās a scam just block them. if they donāt do that and it still seems too good to be true ask if you can come and view the car. if they say no itās a scam
I can confirm that that this is the case.
I made a post in this sub a couple of weeks ago because I have been mooching around the internet looking at cars and I couldn't make sense of the disparity in the perceived values of cars on marketplace vs somewhere like auto trader and eBay etc. Everyone was lovely and explained the scam.
I decided to message someone about a Jaguar because I know a reasonable amount about that particular model, the listing was littered with errors etc. Sure enough, for an instant reply with 'email me at this address with these details etc...'
It was enough to satisfy my curiosity.
I swear the only time I have seen a market place ad for a car and thought, that actually looks like a decent deal, one that isn't overpriced for once. You read the description to then see its a great deal because its been Categorised, and probably from Bradford.
Same Land Rover for sale in three different cities by three different people this week. Theyāre doing it with Leather recliners too and Airstream Caravans.
Just another scammer. Just as bloody bad on eBay.
Last year I was looking to buy a VW t6 and there were as many scam ads as genuine. Sort price high-low usually filters them outš
The only thing you can do to stop this is screenshot the ad, the profile, the other ads listed, get onto a conversation to the point of getting bank details for a deposit (which will be in a different name), screenshot everything and then Googling the sort code youāre given to find the branch address and then get that companyās fraud email from their website and create a fraud report, saying this person who banks at this bank is using their account to potentially receive fraudulent payments for car deposits etc etc, add all images etc.
Banks will close accounts suspected of being used for fraud especially if payments are labelled as ācar depositā and received frequently.
Iāve done it with a couple of accounts selling cheap PS5s.
Look at the seller. Itās usually a woman (30-40s) with 300 cars for sale. That and the price are an obvious giveaway.
I just got a brilliant deal on a Toyota Aygo on Marketplace, they are there, you have to dig.
Scam:
I texted to one guy asking why bmw 640i 16 plate is only 4k. Automated message sent me their email.
I like to play the game sometimes so I sent an email from my old unused acc anymore asking why is that and why MOT checker on gov site doesnāt show the vehicle exists.
This is the reply:
āHello,
The 2014 BMW 640d M Sport Coupe 2dr Diesel Auto Euro 5 (s/s) (313 ps) is still for sale at Ā£4,000. This car is in great condition, 2 keys, 59,850 miles ,Fuel type Diesel, Gearbox Automatic.
The vehicle is located at our warehouse from Romney Marsh TN29 0NA, ready to be transported. We acquired this vehicle from an auction, this is why the lower price.
Since we are dealing mainly with transportation, please note that we don't schedule inspections/pick up at/from our location, but we sell the vehicle with a 5 days money back guarantee.
For a transport cost, reply with your postcode or full address.ā
Then I checked their āwarehouseā postcode - which is residential houses, no warehouse around lol.
Then I asked to reply with full vehicle history and more detailed info + that I need to teat drive the thing first, to which I had no reply yet (if it comes Iāll paste it here).
So yeah - obviously a scam and on top they tru to get address amd probably some other deetails which most of scammers try to get to crack passwords, cards, etc. etc.
Youād be surprised but Iāve had the same thing happen when selling things on gumtree for under Ā£100 and you still get people like these acting as buyers but scamming. Iāve also had it on Autotrader where I entertained them and they would send fake checks. Itās all the same but they change their methods slightly
Deposit scam. The thing is, it's pretty stupid. I can't believe people are really thinking they'll that for 4k, are they? Surely the scammers would be better doing it a little bit under market value and luring people in that way.
Whenever I list a car on marketplace I get tons of guys who just want to flip it offering to send me a deposit right away (last time I accepted this they then turned up and offered like 20% under!)
Wonder if it's the same rationale as with spam/phishing emails and purposefully including spelling mistakes etc. If you can spot these issues, you're less likely to fall for the scam and thus more likely to waste a scammers time.
I saw a suspicious one the other day, looked at the profile which was 5-10 years old and they had over 100 cars listed today, all with an identical text which was somewhat American but advertising here. Cars all over the country. V dodgy but hard to know how they had the well established account
I'm very sad with a dull life and report about 10 each day. Doesn't really make any difference . " I always keep it in the garage" is a giveaway along with odd suspiciously cheap prices.
I run a DJ equipment selling page and you wouldnāt believe how many people have paid deposits for the ābest dealsā.
Spot them a mile off now and just ban them
They message back the same thing āhi I am posting on behalf of my wife/cousin/friend please use this link to contact them directlyā they give you a āmarketplaceā link and then you log into Facebook through that link and then your account is gone.
Nah it's legit mate, just got a Mercedes G63 for Ā£2500 off of Facebook from a guy called Ben Dover, asked for a deposit for delivery which of course I immediately gave, he did tell me that I can't see the car but he'll give my money back if I don't like it, I'm pumped for it tbh can't wait to receive it
Almost every car advert on there now seems to be a scammer. Check out any bargain and the seller of it will have listed around 100 vehicles that day including motorhomes, plant machinery and tractors. You would think Facebook would look into this
Lately marketplace is spammed with these. The moment you message them, a bot will reply with something like "Hello there!š The vehicle Is still for sale! If you are interested, please text me at: [email protected] because I'm working now and I will send you all information for the vehicle ASAP. Please specify the name, year & price of vehicle to see your email faster. Thank you!"
Run away when you see these type of adverts as theyāll want paying by PayPal and the car is in Scotland but will be trailers down to you as heās off conquering the moon and canāt get to where the car isā¦ā¦run run run
I always check how many other cars the person is selling as they always are selling like 40 at half price. If you message youāll get some reply saying itās on behalf of someone else and you need to email a certain person. Scam scam scam.
The most annoying thing is Facebook does nothing about these scammers, itās so bloody obvious when the accounts have similar sounding names, profiles that have only recently been set up and the user is selling 15 cars with a value of Ā£25,000 for Ā£6k.
Yeah, we we're sort of looking at buying a new 4x4 - either a Land Cruiser or another L200. Spotted a very convincing ad for an 11 year old Land Cruiser with only 55k on it for Ā£7k, the profile looked legit and the MOT history and enhanced check on the AA website all made it look entirely legit. Sent the guy a message and that was when I realised it was a scam, auto-reply asking for which car I am interested in, trying to redirect me to a gmail account. I was suspicious from the start but I have picked up a bargain before for considerably less than it was worth.
Oh well - first time I have fallen for a scam in the nearly 30 years I have been internetting,
I've reported loads of these awful cunts on Facebook. Yet they still keep on popping up.
Facebook need to not just block these people, but i.p. block them
Its effing annoying if you want to just browse some cars for an idea of the actual market value.
A caravan came up on my search recently. It has a "clean title" and "engine and transmission runs great". Things like that are a bit of a giveaway, as I know nothing of the value of caravans, but I'm sure it was most likely half price.
One of the things i hate the most since i moved to this country is these scammers. I listed my ipad a few days ago and over 100 scammers wrote me on the first two days. I highly suspect there are more fake listings than real ones
All these accounts tend to have multiple cars listed, at very low prices, and all from different locations in the background. Unless they're a dealership that's just generous hah, odds are it's a scam account
My mate was scammed out of 4k recently, gutting but was so obvious once he told me the story I could have slapped him. He contacted the seller and was told the car was down in England (We are in Scotland) but they would take 80% of the payment then the final 20% once the car was delivered. They then asked him to send the Ā£4k to an account in Spain š and yep he did it.
Never buy a car that you can't see in person and you should be pretty safe
all a scam, messaged to see what funny shite theyād reply with. just an automated message telling you to email some bullshit, i presume then they pressure you into paying a deposit on a car theyāve never even seen and vanish.
A few weeks ago I saw a cheap car from a seller and clicked on the profile. The profile pic was AI generated but it was one of those that the computer had no idea what to do. The eyes were weird, head shape, jaw line etc all messed up. FB marketplace is just a mess.
Scams to drain a deposit out of you. If you click on the seller's other items it's all loads of cars at too good to be true prices. If you widen your search you can find the same cars from other sellers. Like the exact same photos of a car in Bristol and Birmingham.
Here in Tampa Bay Florida these FB Marketplace listings will run in the $1000 range for an old Tacoma in excellent shape. They want to meet up for the sale. And its always a woman who is listing the vehicle. For $1000 I wondered if they were targeting workers without legal status whom they could just rob at gunpoint.
Con, see cheap car, get excited, pay deposit to reserve, ad and owner vanish. Don't fall for it mate.
Mad that anyone falls for it, hard to believe. Wonder if it's a case of list hundreds of cars, and then maybe one person might fall for it. Crazy.
You have to remember that the vast majority of the population are either idiots or gullible.
I resemble that comment.
ššš
I believe this comment soā¦ heās right!
Yep only have to look at how many people fall for fake ads on Facebook like Currys selling Switches for Ā£3.
Just think about how stupid the average person isā¦then think about how half the population is more stupid than them.
Quite
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thank you for pointing out this sub, it's incredible
It costs them basically nothing to post the fake adverts, so the āprofit marginā on one victim is huge, they probably even have a script grabbing photos from auto trader and posting ads automatically
When you click the profile theyāll have 20+ adds all for the same or similar prices. The profiles are hacked and can be any age, all with a full post history visible. I see it a lot with retro furniture as well. I've seen the same teak sideboard posted by several different sellers for stupidly cheap prices.
This. I've been reporting these accounts for ages. They go away for a bit as accounts get shut down, but they always come back. Just click on the person's profile, see 20-30 cars all for sale and too cheap. Report for it being a scam and carry on. The more people who report the faster they are removed.
Who even falls for this shit, it would be more believable if the car was 10k for example, still ridiculously low but a little more realistic.
They donāt want people to be less suspicious, is the simple answer If you see Ā£10k you might think itās legit, contact them and they spend time replying before you say ānah Iām not sending a depositā. Exactly this. That's why spam emails have poor grammar and misspellings - sure the scammers could write it in perfect English, but that wouldn't help weed out the intelligent people who'd be a waste of time later down the line.
It's the same as email scams. The obviously fake ones are there for stupid people to fall for
That does make a lot of sense
I've seen some believable ones, one that comes to mind was a Peugeot 306 cabrio for Ā£1200. Pretty reasonable price for one of those. I was interested till I checked the other listings and saw 200 cars for sale
Yeah, I don't even think an Arnold Clark garage has that many cars.
Came to say exactly the same. Know of a lad from South Shields who used to make a fortune doing just that. Yep, that's too good to be true.
>2018 Audi TT for Ā£4k Ill take 3
I'll just be needing a small deposit from you...
Let me guess, thereās another buyer interested in it and is coming to see it tonight?
Thats fine, you take witty bumper stickers stock right? They retail 4.99 and I'll give you Ā£25k worth. Bargain.
Lol I got an A1 2016 plate a year ago for 12k, 3x. Surely people donāt believe this rubbish
> Surely people donāt believe this rubbish There's one born every minute Check out the various legal advice subreddits, or r/scams. It happens a LOT.

It must happen a lot because these scams seem to keep on increasing instead of decreasing like the Nigerian price.
What's the scam? Get a deposit and run?
Yep.
Other Day I saw a a GT86 for 5K. Took about 5 seconds to find the same ad on auto trader for 12. You do occasionally get proper bargains, but not like this.
Reprot it
Does f all
Maybe report it then.
You canāt. Iāve reported loads of them and Facebook always responds by saying that it doesnāt break any rules
We should all mass report Facebook Marketplace to Scamadvisor.com then.
The ads don't break the rules, however if you report their market place profile as a scam it usually gets rid of them pretty quickly.
Thanks, Iāll try that
It doesn't from what I have seen, reported loads of these and you just get a message back saying their profile and posts doesn't breach community standards.
I've not got any of those replies as of yet? I've done 3 this week...

I've done that a few times, it didn't do anything. Said either no rules broken or due to high traffic they won't be reviewing the profile.
Not cars but seeing stupidly cheap new furniture and kids treehouses for fake prices has made marketplace a no go area. facebook marketplace had such potential.
If you look at their profile and see anothe 100 cheap cars the. Itās clear itās a scam
Suspiciously cheap? š Nothing suspicious about that - it's just outright fake. The number plate doesn't even check out
Yes it does..?
Coming back as not found / registered on my lookup. Where did you look it up
I couldnāt find it either on the government website
I usually use Motorway.com.
Do people actually fool for this? Like they know a 4 year old Audi wonāt be anywhere near 4 grand surely. Even if it is only an A1
Iāve heard that some scammers think if youāre stupid enough to believe the price, then youāre more likely to be scammed so they do these things knowing that cynical people wonāt bother
Just seen one of these near me, 6k for a 1 year old hybrid yaris top spec. Checked the guys profile and there was another 30 cars stupidly low price same description.

Obvious scam, obviously.
Same Land Rover for sale in three different cities by three different people this week. Theyāre doing it with Leather recliners too and Airstream Caravans.
Scam
Just another scammer. Just as bloody bad on eBay. Last year I was looking to buy a VW t6 and there were as many scam ads as genuine. Sort price high-low usually filters them outš
Scammers. FB Marketplace is so riddled with them that I just ignore it now. If you're a genuine seller I advise using another platform.
Either ā¢ Deposit scam or ā¢ Cat S or ā¢ Deposit scam using Cat S as an excuse for why it's so cheap
Autotrader should be identifying these sorts of scams off the bat, it's not like they don't have the data not to.
This is Facebook.
That explains it š I haven't used Facebook for about 7 years
I only recently started using FB again when looking for a car. Lasted about a week before I deleted it again. It's as awful as it was then.
Click on the sellers profile, half the time they are trying to sell a car in your local area but their profile says that they're in Mumbai.
Cheap cars all posted in the same ares with the same wording in every advert ,and FB ban you for reporting them as fake ,,,,go figure
Look at the seller. Itās usually a woman (30-40s) with 300 cars for sale. That and the price are an obvious giveaway. I just got a brilliant deal on a Toyota Aygo on Marketplace, they are there, you have to dig.
If something seems too good to be true, then it normally is.
Theres a shit tonne of stolen ads, seen plenty of fake TTs and GT86s for example
Thats probably a dinger
Its just a scam. They tell you to pay a deposit to get the car and then they block you.

Iāve also had it on Autotrader where I entertained them and they would send fake checks. Itās all the same but they change their methods slightly

Yeah I wouldn't recommend trying to buy or sell anything on fb anymore. Ocean of scammers.
Deposit scam. The thing is, it's pretty stupid. I can't believe people are really thinking they'll that for 4k, are they? I saw a suspicious one the other day, looked at the profile which was 5-10 years old and they had over 100 cars listed today, all with an identical text which was somewhat American but advertising here. Cars all over the country. V dodgy but hard to know how they had the well established account
I stay away from Facebook for cars itās too much risk even the ones reasonably priced still 90% chance itās crap.
Obviously deposit scam,
It's FB marketplace, that's up.
Saw a BMW 545e with 22k on the clock for Ā£14500 a while back, no reported faults and FSH. Sometimes deals also seem a bit inbetweeny.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck ā¦ā¦ itās probably ā¦.. a duck ā¦.. šš©
Scam. I like that number plate tho
Funnily enough, most of the ads I've come across are 2018 models.
Same with laptops and high value goods. They all seem to be priced at Ā£69 or Ā£70 for a 2019 MacBook Pro or something like that
Marketplace seems like a cheaper way to buy cars but Iād be too scared of being scammed to ever do it
Check the owners FB and when they have created the account. Very obvious scam.
I'm very sad with a dull life and report about 10 each day. Doesn't really make any difference . " I always keep it in the garage" is a giveaway along with odd suspiciously cheap prices.
If it seems really cheap, then itās most probably a scam.
Could be stolen. Otherwise most certainly a scam to get a deposit and vanish into thin air
You should do it and when you get there details send them a penny and write āwankerā in the little note box.
Obviously scams
Avoid anything for sale in Scotland.
Nah it's legit mate, just got a Mercedes G63 for Ā£2500 off of Facebook from a guy called Ben Dover, asked for a deposit for delivery which of course I immediately gave, he did tell me that I can't see the car but he'll give my money back if I don't like it, I'm pumped for it tbh can't wait to receive it
Stolen
Scams. They just use someone else's photos and then ask for a small deposit to hold it before doing a disappearing act.
Almost every car advert on there now seems to be a scammer. Check out any bargain and the seller of it will have listed around 100 vehicles that day including motorhomes, plant machinery and tractors. You would think Facebook would look into this
No MOT or tax records registered for that car (know your car app)
Rip off, I would never pay 4k for that. šÆ
Either: theyāll asl for a deposit if you wanna see the vehicle, or they just want you to contact them for the actual price.
Too good to be true, always is. Scam with a cherry on top.
Why does nobody talk to us when we randomly want to give away our MASSIVE YACHTS!
Facebook need to not just block these people, but i.p. block them
Sfs Will you take 3 for it ?
Happened a few years back with super high end bikes on eBay worth 10-14k be sold for 2k. Scam
Look out for all the listings that say No Liens or Encuberances. So many ads using the same bullshit jargon it's a complete giveaway
I doubt anyone would be silly enough to pay a deposit for a car that not seen?
Pure Fraud. Reporting to FB gets me zero response
Check the profile of the person selling. They often have whole variety of good looking, very cheap cars for sale all at the same time
As they if itās too good be true itās usually not. There will be a catch or scam going on here.
Scams.
Ebay is also full of them
Fucking hell, the ad, at least try and make it somewhat realistic. At this point if you fall for this them thats on you...
One of the things i hate the most since i moved to this country is these scammers. I listed my ipad a few days ago and over 100 scammers wrote me on the first two days. I highly suspect there are more fake listings than real ones
Scam
All these accounts tend to have multiple cars listed, at very low prices, and all from different locations in the background. Unless they're a dealership that's just generous hah, odds are it's a scam account
You'll find it on autotrader with the real price
Like suspiciously cheap property, they exist to poach those who cannot see whatās too good to be true.
The only positive out of all of these scams is that they have the unlikely possibility of deflating used car market values.
They're on eBay as well, they look professional outfit until you Google them and nowt comes up, and their contact details look suspect
Complete scam, you'll see the same seller has like 20 high end german cars usually priced at 4-4.5k.
Trust me bro
You turn up with Ā£4K and get mugged.
You turn up with Ā£4K and get mugged.

I found a 2023 dodge charger for 10k. Is that a scam?
Has anyone got a car from cheep cars on FB
Here in Tampa Bay Florida these FB Marketplace listings will run in the $1000 range for an old Tacoma in excellent shape. They want to meet up for the sale. And its always a woman who is listing the vehicle. For $1000 I wondered if they were targeting workers without legal status whom they could just rob at gunpoint.
