MG TF, MX5, MR2 as well as the usual assorted hot hatches. They aren't as fun as the roadsters though.

beardandabaldhead

Get the best mark 5 golf GTI you can find, and do a stage 1 tune.

Trash_Panda_1983

Or a MK2 Leon cupra. They make a lot more power. I've had both and would take the Leon every time. The k04 turbo makes a huge difference

Familiar-Beyond4475

Yup bang on the money...... oorrrrrrr stand out from the crowd a little. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202307250057972?atmobcid=soc3 R32 for just under 5k. Mapped GTi would outpace it BUT have you ever heard those naturally aspirated vr6 engines? Ohhhh smiles per mile winner

beardandabaldhead

Sounds like a wookie farting, in a good way. Great price on that car. I had a Corrado vr6, great car and beautiful engine but too nose heavy.

Familiar-Beyond4475

Hahahaha yeah that's quite accurate šŸ˜‚ I went Bora vr6 and it was nose heavy too but the 4wd I think helped make it feel a little more balanced

Djr215

My previous car was a 2008 Bmw 130i. 3.0 litre straight 6 that produces about 270bhp. Pretty quick and sounded lovely. Bit of a sleeper too as most people suspected it to be a 118/120d etc. Not sure what insurance will be like at your age. Worth a quote though. I sold mine for Ā£5.5k but there are plenty around the Ā£4K mark. Very reliable motors too!

Far_Carpenter6156

Would have been a good suggestion five years ago but I don't think you can get one for 4k now, at least not one that isn't falling apart. I'd look into a Z4 with the same engine.

Djr215

Living crisis has meant thereā€™s actually not that much demand for big engine, not particularly economical cars. Iā€™m still on the 130i Facebook page. See plenty in the Ā£4-5k region that are in good nick, owned by enthusiasts!

Far_Carpenter6156

Maybe they've gone down now I haven't been looking at prices very recently. I did nearly buy one about 6 years ago when I got my previous car and you could find decent examples for as little as like Ā£3500, a good one around 5k (bought a Diesel instead and regretted it almost immediately!). Then about a year and a half ago when I was in the market again there were only a handful for sale nationwide, 4k would only get you a dented auto with well over 120k miles, a manual with good body work and reasonable mileage was listed at more like 8k. I distinctly remember the prices because they were listed at roughly the same as the more recent 135/335i's which I thought was frankly ridiculous and that's why I didn't get one.

Parking-Tip1685

Easily get a convertible Saab 9-3 aero for less and pay for a stage 1 remap. That's 250 bhp for the 2 litre or 300bhp for the 2.8v6.

throwawayDude131

Get a MX5, lots of fun under the speed limit. Youā€™re not going to get anything notable which ā€œpullsā€ properly for Ā£4k but you can get a decent light little sports car which will be great fun to chuck around.

Shrink1061_

Mx5 is always the answer. For 4k you can get a half decent NC with a 2.0 engine, theyā€™re super light cars so they move quickly enough, and youā€™ll learn so much about rear wheel drive dynamics. I can set a laptime quicker than an M3 around something like blyton park on cornering and braking alone. Straight line speed is a very poor measure of a car. If you do just wanna go fast in a straight line, find a bmw 3.0 turbo diesel and remap it. Itā€™ll feel like a muscle car in most day to day situations

Far_Carpenter6156

MX5s are just not quick. Even the 2l is an 8 seconds to 60 car. They handle OK but not even that great without mods.

Shrink1061_

Yeah but letā€™s be fair a 986 base boxster isnā€™t exactly quick, and is also likely to handle like a bag of crap without mods lol

Far_Carpenter6156

Well it's faster and handles better than an Mx5, though the Mx5 at least is cheap, the Boxster is a ripoff for what it is. Not cheap to maintain either, and a royal pain in the ass to work on.

Shrink1061_

A 986 really really doesnā€™t handle better than an mx5ā€™s physics and weight take car of that. Iā€™ve had both (welll I had a 987) and I track both. I choose to track the mx5 because it is more engaging, is more fun, and has better front end. Reminder that the mx5 has double wishbone front suspension, something Porsche charge Ā£180k for in a gt3 RS these days!

New_Salad_3853

Who's driving the m3?? There's no way a competent driver would be slower around blyton in m3 than a 2.0 NC. It's not happening

Shrink1061_

you'd be surprised, its a very tight track, these big cars simply don't work there. Somewhere like oulton or donington fair enough, but I've driven blyton in an F80 M3, and its horrendous. It's like trying to drive a boat around a bathtub

New_Salad_3853

I've driven Blyton a few times , only in my e30 but I'm still pretty sure I could put any iteration m3 round it quicker than any mx5. It's only a few corners and you would just lose it on that straight with the kink on it.

Shrink1061_

Itā€™s not about losing the corner itā€™s the fact that threading a 1.4-1.7 ton car around the bends just canā€™t be donā€™t quickly. The ump, wiggler, bunga bunga, will all have slower cornering speeds than you can do in a smaller lighter car.

New_Salad_3853

Yeah I'm aware of that. I still don't think it would be quicker. They're just too slow and yeah they handle okay but having driven there a few times I just can't see it.

Netizen03

Pretty much any scrappy old diesel BMW will pull for as long as its turbo lasts, especially so with a remap. Insurance on the other hand...

Snowy1234

An elderly bmw has to be the worst advice ever. Especially the diesels. They are famous for turbo issues, inlet butterfly valve issues, engine ecu issues, electrical harness issues, small ends, and lots lots more.

Shrink1061_

Yeah but OP just wants something that pulls. Iā€™d rather OP did something sensible and bought a fun reliable little car and enjoyed it. But if you want to haul, a 3.0 bmw diesel and a remap would do the trick.

ashyjay

RS Clios, Swift Sport, older Fiesta STs.

[deleted]

all the chav cars that have obviously been horrendously well looked after and serviced meticulously.

Mad_kat4

Since when is a renaultsport Clio let alone a swift sport a 'Chav' car. Ford's definitely but I can't think of the last time I saw a renaultsport being chavved and I've hardly ever even seen a swift sport being driven hard other than the rent 4 ring cars.

ashyjay

They wanted a cheap quick car, you can be lucky and get a good one, or a bit of a project, and right now is the best time to get them, as the good ones are climbing in value, Clio 172/182s are getting hard to find cheap, as they've been crashed, or ruined by being turned in to track toys.

Johnchainwayne

Old golf gti slap on a stage 1 tune and ur off.. be careful though will be old car

mcdougall57

Probably nothing that will pull. I went the other way round. I've been riding a VFR800 for years and ended up getting an MX5 for fun. Nothing really 'pulls' like a bike unless you have 100k to spend on a sub 3 second car. More fun to be had in ragging it and good handling.

E5onproduction

Ep3 type r

PlusLifeEV

I would say fuck all really thatā€™s not ready for scrapping. That price bracket youā€™re looking for an up or i10 of some shit

Zdos123

I bought an MX5 for Ā£4k and it was pretty tidy.

PlusLifeEV

He wants power though not an all rounder

[deleted]

at your age, nothing will pull.. unless you're willing to pay the 3-6k everyone is complaining.. what you want is something very low, 1-1.2 litre engine or less.. you'll get the feeling of speed without the issue of insurance cars that come to mind are a classic mini or a smart roadster.

Zdos123

I have a 1.8l mazda MX5 which does 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds and i'm only paying Ā£1400 a year and i was 19 when i started the policy.

Vadok

You're 21 so I'm assuming A2 but possibly DAS? If you're getting a bike not many cars are going to feel fast, especially under 4k. Get either something with good handling like mx5/MR2 or get something reliable like a Civic. If you're getting the unrestricted license, what bike ya getting? I've just got my sv650 on my A2 and really need to book my full license asap

Anonymous_Chats222

That's cool dude, how you finding it, nearly died yet or nah haha? Tbh i haven't even fully looked into all the laws on what you can ride after MOD 2 n stuff but was looking at maybe Honda cbr650 but not set on anything in particular at the moment. Its crazy what power you can get for 4k with a bike compared to a car tho. And yeah book it soon as possible cause waiting times are ridiculous.

Vadok

Love it mate, nothing better that riding bikes even as a commuter. Rode in 2018/19 a lot and took a break so done my near death scenarios then ahaha Just focusing on smooth safe riding now getting back into it but my bike was 2.3k and does 0-60 in 4s, madness fast. Not get anywhere close in a 4k car. If you're on A2 check out a2bikea.co.uk that's a really good website on what you can ride, basically anything under 92(?) Hp can be restricted down the sv650/er6n and er6f now ninja 650 are goated starter bikes, plenty of power but not too much to be ridiculous as you learn

Anonymous_Chats222

Yeah its sick, my mate gave me a go on his 125cc in a Tesco parking lot and the next day i booked my CBT and theory lol. Will have a look at that site and check those bikes out cheers.

One of my mates is older but a new driver, and some of the cars that came back with surprisingly cheap insurance for them (even in Birmingham...) were Citroƫn DS3 THP, Mini Cooper S, RS Clio, RS Megane 225/230, EP3 and FN2 Civic Type R.

Embarrassed-Ice5462

Lexus IS200 with a turbo conversion

Seymourdough

- Volvo C30 T5 fast with lots of modding potential and not many on the road so insurance might be cheaper than the average hot hatch. Or an Astra 1.6t. 200bhp out the box and can be remapped. not really considered a sports car so might fly under the radar with insurance

pepthebaldfraud

Bicycle and go downhill

[deleted]

Only the brave/ Alfa clover leaf

Shrink1061_

Or go leftfield and get an old Volvo 5 cylinder turbo. The old man image and safety features tend to make them a little cheaper to insure, and they shift!

2.8 Z3

Yeah true you do have to sort of "enquire" about mods like that before committing haha

JCVDaaayum

Mazda 3 or 6 MPS. The 6 has AWD and about 250hp. Cheap as fuck because the tax is expensive.

Extreme_Ad4773

Bmw e39 540i, old man car so cheap to insure but 4.4 v8 so pulls for days
