Get a hot logic minnie - it's a small hot plate you can just keep at your desk at work to heat things. It takes longer but IMO I think the food comes out better than in a microwave - more evenly heated and it'll keep the meal hot for hours. That said, I don't think I've ever been glutened by using a shared microwave (I cover my food with a lid or paper towel in case) and I'm sensitive to pretty trace amounts of contamination.

heavymetaltshirt

I do the same (cover with a paper towel) but I’m going to start putting a paper towel underneath as well. Does the hot logic make food smells? I work in an open plan office and I’m positive that the rest of the people here don’t want to smell my lunch all day.

Tauber10

Not too much smell - I use a container with a snap-on lid that is pretty tight, and then the whole thing goes in a zipper pouch. I'd avoid anything with too strong a smell just in case but I don't think it's a problem if you use the right kind of container.

Catbooties

I share my microwave at home with a toddler who eats loads of gluten. Just don't touch the bottom of the containers you microwave and then lick your fingers or something. I don't typically handle the bottoms of anything I microwave anyway, so I have yet to have problems.

mimijona

I used to straight up cook potatoes in a shared microwave where ppl but all kinds of bread things. But I put them in their special fabric pouch thing (saved my student ass back then) and I was fine because I guess it was fully covered.

alexisnthererightnow

Can't you just wash your hands after microwaving things? I would think you wouldn't be using paper cup or anything that might soak up the gluten water? My fiance and I are super sensitive and share a microwave with a gluten eating roommate, and I just don't see the issue.

heavymetaltshirt

I do wash my hands before I eat, but I was truly not expecting a wet gluten puddle in the microwave.

alexisnthererightnow

I guess I just don't see why you care. It's a work microwave. I get it's rude to leave a mess, but beyond that, I don't really get what the issue is.

heavymetaltshirt

I guess I don’t see why *you* care. It makes me uncomfortable. It doesn’t have to make you uncomfortable. We are different people. Also, you are telling me that you wouldn’t have a qualm about setting your bowl into 1/4” of someone else’s pasta water? It’s gross and unsanitary, plus the gluten.

alexisnthererightnow

I don't care really, I'm just curious. I guess I came off wrong, but I mean it neutrally, I don't think you're an asshole for caring abt it. I just don't get it. I do think it's gross, but like, not really a celiacs thing. Is it for you? Could you maybe explain why you feel the way you do?

inarealdaz

I'm sorry, but I'm confused by you stating not really a celiacs thing... Of course it is! Have you NEVER heard of cross contamination? Do you not hold your bowls and plates with the palm of your hand or have your hands touch your bowls, plates, eating utensils at all??? This is how people get accidental gluten exposure. 🤦🤦🤦

Haurassaurus

Use a paper towel under your bowl or plate and wash your hands. You should be washing your hands for more reasons than gluten anyways.

alexisnthererightnow

I mean, it's implied they're eating in an office. Of I have a table, I set my bowl down. If I don't, I don't eat with both hands. In my experience, it's not hard to avoid accidental cross containmination of you're incredibly aware of these things. The gluten doesn't affect my skin if i dont get any in my mouth, but I understand it may affect some. However, that's seemingly not the issue OP is talking about. I'm not asking if other people seriously have run into issues with this just to be a dick. I share a microwave with someone who eats gluten and basically only ramen noodles. I have never found this situation to be a problem beyond "hey, could you like... wipe out the microwave if your shit explodes, this is gross" It's never been a celiacs issue for me, because again. Even if I don't have a table to set my bowl on, I don't eat with both hands.

tacocatfish

If anything, reddit has shown me apparently celiacs have horrible personal hygiene

heavymetaltshirt

Wow kind AND thoughtful! Thank you!

tacocatfish

My pleasure.

aGlutenForPunishment

I asked my work to get a second allergen safe microwave that I kept in my office and felt so much better afterwards. It's nice not having to worry if the buttons are covered in gluteny fingerprints and sauces or if crumbs on the inner walls of the microwave are going to fall into my food and make me sick.

heavymetaltshirt

I would like a microwave and a kettle at my desk, haha.

aGlutenForPunishment

It doesn't hurt to ask. The worst they can say is no. A new microwave isn't expensive. What's $35-50 bucks to buy some peace of mind and avoid a potential glutening?

MoonDreamWanderer

I’m weird about it, because I am very sensitive to cross-contamination (& prone to OCD). When sharing an office microwave, I typically use the cleaning supplies to clean the microwave before I use it. If it appears clean, I may use a paper towel to set under my plate & another one over, but honestly I don’t ever feel like it’s clean enough when I do this and then I end up washing my hands like 4-5 times. I’m honestly surprised there’s not more responses concerned about it in general, but I’m in a STEM field & painstakingly aware of germs/cross-contact (I also am quite aware that I’m taking things too seriously, but it makes me feel safer/more comfortable so I do it)

xIncoherent1x

I use "Tupperware" style glass containers that go in the work microwave and I have a lid with a valve covering them. Thankfully our work microwaves are also quite clean (and we have 8 of them, so I can pick another if not). But even if it's not 100% clean, there's basically zero chance of contamination getting into my lunch. And I'm about as strict about CC as they come. We have a garage sink where I do a basic wash when I come home. Then it goes straight into the dishwasher.

Huffaqueen

I think microwaves are cesspools of hidden gluten. I know - we all have different thresholds, so not criticizing anyone else, just sharing my own boundary. It’s a hard pass on microwaves for me. I bought a mini crockpot for work soup. It brought me so much joy to have hot food at work again. :)

thatdogJuni

I’m typically not too worried about work microwaves but I tend to leave my container lid situated on it with a gap so it’s more protected than not and I probably do way more hand washing than everyone else at the office due to celiac and also that I’m often handling other people’s electronic equipment. Keyboards are downright disgusting. There’s a scale, sure, but 9.99999/10 times a keyboard has visible crumbs of unknown origin and that is also usually the least gross thing about the keyboard in its used condition. I absolutely do not want to fix someone’s technical issue using their keyboard and then go eat lunch without washing my hands between those activities especially but I would usually detour to wash my hands after wrapping up with someone anyway because I touch my face plenty and don’t want any mishaps or illnesses I could prevent 🤷‍♀️ Anyway it’s more than reasonable to ask your work for some kind of accommodation. Stuff spills in refrigerators all the time, like you noticed microwaves can easily have debris or residue from whoever ate lunch earlier in the day, and so on. You could see if they would consider putting an “allergen-free” labeled microwave in the mother’s room if you have one since there is also usually a dedicated mini fridge in those rooms and you’d be all set with a separate space to store your lunch and heat it. If the dedicated microwave is not in the main kitchen it will not be so tempting to use for someone without dietary allergies/other issues like celiac (less convenient to use usually reduces this kind of thing significantly). If that’s not workable or you don’t have a mother’s room you could request it set up in a drop in office or conference room that you can block on the schedule for your lunch. It would probably be nice to not have to eat at your desk and have a designated space to decompress where you can warm up your food and eat in the same place. Edit to add: if you don’t have a mothers/nursing room at your office you could probably sell the idea I mentioned of a hybrid nursing room/allergen free lunch area to your HR on the two birds one stone standpoint where they will have an easy win for accommodations in more ways than one.

Oh my gosh. Are you licking the floor of the gym? What are you doing exactly that will make this trigger a celiac reaction? OP, wipe up the puddle, rinse off the plate, wash your hands, and don't lick the bottom of your dishes.

BristleconeXX

because i was recently diagnosed and im seeing the world in a different way and its just talking time to get used to. we have several diseases in my young family and im doing the best i can. you don’t have to be so judgmental and rude.

Haurassaurus

Because people see people act ridiculous about things like this and then don't take the rest of us seriously when we talk about cross contamination.

BristleconeXX

do you think i would ever tell anyone real in the world that??? im so freaking careful about anyone ever changing any tiny aspect their lives for me. i don’t eat at parties or most restaurants bc i don’t want ppl thinking “oh here comes the celiac, needing the accommodations.” you don’t have to worry about that with me. i’m just sharing my inner thoughts bc many ppl on here get it. something so ubiquitous and innocuous has come to represent so many bad things for us.. that’s really all im pointing out.

thatdogJuni

It’s extremely easy to accidentally put your hand on a gym floor in an undesirable place especially if you’re watching children. I don’t see why this has to be called out rudely.

Haurassaurus

Yes, and that can pick up all sorts of nasty things. This is why we wash our hands before eating.

BristleconeXX

thank you ❤️ ❤️❤️. i have a toddler and he walks and climbs over everything in his path.

texas886

I share a microwave at home with a gluten eater - no issues. Though I will say he is good about wiping down the microwave if something glutenous spills over. I would either just do a quick wipe down yourself at work, or be sure to wash your hands before eating if you touch the bottom of your item.

heavymetaltshirt

Yeah, I definitely do all those things. I just thought it was gross that they left a 1/4” puddle of gluteny water in the microwave, and it raises the risk of cross contamination due to the bottom of the bowl being wet with gluten. I do what I can to minimize that risk.

texas886

I get it, office microwaves are a scary place cuz most people are unfortunately pretty dirty individuals lol

Hellrazed

Are you putting your food directly on the turntable or are you using a plate or bowl like a normal person?

Haurassaurus

Seriously! Put a papertowel under your plate or bowl, use a microwave cover, and wash your hands. Problem solved.
