Thousand**s**, she's allowed to have one.

SACBH

Give it a week or so.

LastChance22

10 days before we’re at 2k if things keep on their trend would be my guess. Edit: oh shit, this is just a back of the envelope guess based on some random number someone else pulled out that I didn’t check. So to cover my arse: Their random number I didn’t check to see if it’s correct: case numbers growth is 8%. My quick-arse math: 1000 * 1.08 = X * 1.08 and just repeating that. Each repeat represents a day. You can plug in your own numbers if that original case number growth rate is wrong. This also assumes it’s constant on average, not necessarily the case. In fact, as vaccine coverage rises we’d expect that number to drop (if it was even correct in the first place).

Elzanna

No need to guess when chrisjgraphington's work can point pretty clearly to 9-10 days until 2,000.

nesrekcajkcaj

Does that model include 50% break through infection on vaccinated people, restrictions easing for vaccinated people to allow groups of five to gather outside in parks, from different households. Are we aiming for 10k infections a day by mid oct? "Was that your(her) plan?"

Elzanna

Hmm? the one I was referencing is just the generic exponential fit for the growth in cases and assumes roughly constant R\_eff into the future, which has been pretty much true for the last six weeks. It's just a fit of the current daily case numbers extrapolated, so it includes all of those factors you mentioned. Ongoing vaccinations hopefully will put a dent in that and slow it down, but we haven't really started seeing that yet.

Delta is more contagious than the OG strain. Back then it was remind me two weeks.

MallCommon3980

It is the liberal way of saying the thousands of cases and the deaths was not thier fault, we could not let WA win by locking down in the same time frame they did, and admit Labor were right.

Yeah but that's only *some* thousands. If they hadn't done anything it would have been *more* thousands.

Lol. Thousand of cases. Have you thought about applying for the Liberal government?

Stickliketoffee16

She’s talking thousands and thousands of cases though which NSW does now have if you look at the active cases. It’s only 1029 for 1 day but cumulatively she has absolutely failed!

13,000 active cases

Algernon_Asimov

She's not wrong. If there was no lockdown and no restrictions, the reproduction rate of the coronavirus would be *much* higher than it is, and Sydney would be seeing *much* higher infections every day than it is. Even a bad lockdown is better than no lockdown at all. According to /u/chrisjbillington, the reproduction rate [has remained between 1.25 and 1.50](https://new.reddit.com/r/CoronavirusDownunder/comments/pbp5bm/nsw_r_eff_as_of_august_26th_with_daily_cases_and/) for the past 6 weeks. Without the lockdown, that reproduction rate would certainly be much higher - possibly as high [as the 5.0 reproduction rate](https://academic.oup.com/jtm/advance-article/doi/10.1093/jtm/taab124/6346388) of the Delta variant when it's unfettered. Can you imagine what daily cases would have looked like over the past couple of months if the cases had grown at 5x instead of 1.5x? The lockdown, such as it is, has prevented thousands of cases over the past 6 weeks.

chinawillgrowlarger

This lockdown was inevitable. The timing was stupid. Telling people not to cancel events the day before a super-spread party, also stupid.

How's the timing for Vic going? Seems to have made little difference...

gigglefang

How about Queensland, NT, WA? A hard lock down isn't a silver bullet as Victoria MAY be showing us, but it would have given us a fucking chance at the very least.

[deleted]

I'll give you Queensland. NT and WA are individual cases very different from NSW and Vic. Has WA even had delta get out yet !?

Stickliketoffee16

Yes we have. We had immediate hard lockdown & masks/restrictions that made perfect sense. Oh also our contact tracing system actually works

[deleted]

Mate I'm in WA too. Wasn't our case actually from someone who had had covid before ? Like a false positive or some shit. Or I'm sure I've read if you get covid again it's not transferable. In fact I'm sure the guys wife didn't even get it. And here you are claiming it was our lock down and shit 🤦‍♂️ Edit : I apologize if you're talking about a different case but that was the only one I know about in recent history.

Stickliketoffee16

I’m not ‘claiming it was our lockdown and shit’ by itself, we were lucky in that it was a weak positive. The point I’m trying to make is that we dealt with it quickly, effectively & logically. If there’s 100+ cases in the community, why would you allow all retail stores (David Jones, sportscraft, mecca) to be open for people to browse when you’re also asking them to stay at home? That’s what happened in NSW for WEEKS after they supposedly started their ‘lockdown’. They could have significantly slowed the spread by taking a much harsher stance on everything but instead they waffled on about how they were in the ‘harshest lockdown conditions’ while my mum is forced to go to work at a luxury department store!

iAmAGoodPerson2021

It’s a little different comparing Sydney to Perth…Perth is extremely isolated and not many people want to go there. Sydney is a very densely populated city, the most populated AND the most dense in the country.

chinawillgrowlarger

Seems to be going in the right direction. Only 16% unlinked today and it was 0% by the end of the other day. NSW has never been at ratios that low and is currently at 82% unlinked out of over a thousand cases. Victorian restrictions are clearly playing a positive role, even if not obvious superficially or from headlines and such.

SomeGuyNamedJames

Basically NSW has no control anymore.

metasophie

> How's the timing for Vic going? Seems to have made little difference... I feel for Victoria. Coming out of lockdown from the delta variant only to get infected by some fucking arsehole Sydneysider who couldn't give two fucks about anybody else and putting them back into lockdown. That being said, their reff is going down.

PahoojyMan

It is factually correct that the measures taken reduced the number of infections that would have resulted without them. But this fact is being intentionally misrepresented to 'prove' that the measures taken were enough. They should have taken more drastic measures, much sooner.

Algernon_Asimov

> They should have taken more drastic measures, much sooner. I agree. But the actions they did take have reduced the number of cases, by at least thousands if not tens of thousands.

PahoojyMan

They could have done even less, and still avoided thousands of cases. This isn't a matter of using hindsight. They had the capability and advice to do more, sooner, but chose not to.

Stickliketoffee16

As an outsider with family in Sydney, this has been the most infuriating part of the whole outbreak

Kruxx85

However, please explain the logic of this for me please: If she is willing to impose such a strict lockdown now, why didn't she impose the same restrictions at day one or two of the outbreak? I hope you don't say because they didn't know, because there was clear evidence one state down on what works and what doesn't. The spin is absurd.

Syncblock

Politics aside, it's because she didn't think it was necessary and she doesn't believe some of the measures would work or are effective. NSW spent 18 months taking the majority of arrivals and still containing several outbreaks, including delta cases while hundreds of deaths were mounting in Victoria under heavier lockdowns. Even as the lockdown started you had her own ministers like Perrottet, the guy next in line to the throne, leak to the press that they actually wanted to open up the state and let it rip but mean old Gladys said no or Hazzard, the Health Minister and major powerbroker, being one of the biggest anti lockdown voices in the room despite his entire department telling him to lockdown. >I hope you don't say because they didn't know, because there was clear evidence one state down on what works and what doesn't. The problem is we don't actually have all the evidence and what works in one state or in one situation doesn't mean it'll work again. Sydney had a guy with delta run drive across the entire city looking for barbeques and only end up infecting himself and his partner without the whole city in lockdown while an unvaccinated taxi driver who didn't want to wear a mask ended up causing this entire outbreak. Sydney had localised lockdowns that worked while other places overseas had localised lockdowns which failed. Even with the newest measures, like the curfew, the government's basically come out and said that they don't think the evidence is there to show that it'll make a significant difference but they don't want to criticism from not implementing it.

Kruxx85

Not very politically courageous then, I would say. As I've said elsewhere, I'd have more respect if they just followed their convictions and let it rip. The backflipping is non-sensical.

Algernon_Asimov

> If she is willing to impose such a strict lockdown now, why didn't she impose the same restrictions at day one or two of the outbreak? Why should *I* explain that logic? I'm just here to explain the logic behind her statement that the restrictions have, indeed, prevented thousands of cases over the past couple of months. If you want an answer to your question about something other than this, contact the Premier. I'm not her spokesman.

melbun

I get what you're saying and I get it gives the government plausible deniability on a technicality. After watching the video again she jumps between saying the restrictions *saved* NSW from getting thousands of cases and times when she's saying without the lockdowns the *daily numbers* (not saved) would be in the thousands. She's not wrong, but the lockdown still made the daily cases the thousands (and overall in the thousands) on that technicality, which is different from both preventing thousands of cases and stopping it from getting in the thousands (unless the context was right then and there vs. stopping it in the future). Everyone is talking about semantics here. I feel that the realistic side of things is that the majority of the population wouldn't have distinguished between the two and would interpret it as stop it from going to thousands in the future. That's the cynical side of me thinking that's what a politician does best, double speak.

[deleted]

by that logic, if she just declares corona isn't a virus, then no one is catching the virus. checkmate lefties

KillsWithDucks

a broken clock is right twice a day

Algernon_Asimov

> but if we all would of caught it, had 2-3 weeks off work and we'd be back to normal Except, of course, for the people who would have died and the people who would still be suffering long-term symptoms. Those people wouldn't be back to normal. Nor would their families.

[deleted]

Wow what a big fat lie. **12,390 cases in the last 4 weeks, get lost glady's.**

Deethreekay

Thing is, it's not a lie. It's just disingenuous. The actions of her Government have saved thousands. But had they could have done a lot more and save a lot more, so arguably the inaction of their government has also resulted in thousands of cases. It's a bit like if you saw two people about to fall of a bridge and you can feasibly save both of them but only save one, then demand you only get credit for saving the one and not get criticized for letting the other die.

Algernon_Asimov

> 12,390 cases in the last 4 weeks And how many *more* cases would we have seen, if there were no restrictions and no lockdown in place? Thousands more cases. Possibly tens of thousands more cases. Which is what Gladys is saying.

SojournerRL

You can prevent thousands of cases and still have done a shit job. Which she did. Which is the point of this post.

Algernon_Asimov

> Which is the point of this post. That point is not expressed very clearly by this post. This post is only highlighting one particular statement of hers: that the lockdowns have prevented thousands of cases. And that statement happens to be true.

chrisjbillington

Without any restrictions they'd have easily had >100k cumulative cases by now, and daily cases consistently in the tens of thousands, so to be fair it's still true.

sam-dan

We could have avoided this situation with a lockdown after the limo driver tested positive

chrisjbillington

Also true.

Algernon_Asimov

The people in this thread don't seem to be interested in facts or truth. They just want to perform their Two Minutes Hate for the day.

AnOnlineHandle

Many of us considered the weeks ago but aren't really interested in excusing her with 'technically correct' interpretations, when she's trying to convey that they handled this pandemic correctly, when this was all clearly predictable from the start that they'd reach the very scenario she was praising herself for avoiding. As somebody else in the thread mentioned, it's like a problem gambler who was told not to gamble the family's 100k boasting about how great they are for coming home losing only $50k. Maybe they even said they'd come home with thousands of dollars, so are technically correct.

BinaryPill

I honestly hate this criticism because what she's been saying is almost objectively true. Just because there are 1000 cases doesn't mean that thousands have not been prevented. Her lockdown strategies have been very questionable and she could have probably stopped more, but it'd be so much worse without the lockdown. It's like saying a soccer goalkeeper saying he saved hundreds of goals, and people here saying he obviously didn't do that because their team conceded hundreds of goals over his career. Like, a soccer team is obviously better with a goalkeeper.

kinkora

The more accurate analogy is of a gambler that loses $50k of the $100k family savings and says "At least I didn't lose all $100k!". It is obvious that she is deflecting from how bad the numbers of cases has gotten and refuses to even acknowledge it at any point. The criticism is not about being true (or not) but more so on the moving goal posts. E.g. She was pointing out at the start that they cases will never go up higher than x.. or that the gov actions is working and have seen the peak (when it was in the 30s!)... or even when the number of cases dips a lil for a few days, she says that it is trending downwards only for the cases to rise again later. When called out on this, her default answer is "at least it is not in the thousands!". How will you feel if your partner loses half of your savings and instead of being sorry for their actions, the reply is "at least i did not lose all of it! i did well by saving the other 50%!". It is a textbook example of gaslighting.

rhazz

Sorry the goalkeeper analogy doesn’t make sense to me. Equating the goalkeeper to the restrictions, your hypothetical is more like: The goalkeeper was only introduced halfway through the game. The goalkeeper still prevented hundreds (or whatever number) of goals which is true. However; they did not prevent any goals during the first half of the match (which may have been prevented). To re-emphasise, the criticism is not that the lockdowns didn’t work. It’s that NSW should have imposed these restrictions earlier and/or gone harder.

jakesonwu

It's worse. It's like the soccer coach after the season telling reporters that without the actions of him putting a goalkeeper on the pitch they would of finished last instead of second last.

The_Sneakiest_Fox

I mean, she's not wrong when she says "by going into lockdown we have prevented thousands and thousands of cases".. Compared to doing absolutely nothinng, yes Gladys, you have prevented cases. Had you done slightly more than the bare minimum you have done, you could have prevented thousands and thousands more.

MMLCG

Next she will be saying she’s prevented thousands and thousands of Deaths. Truely sad.

DMcI0013

Technically correct. Her government HAS reduced the number of cases and deaths that would have occurred. However, this doesn’t negate the point that a more competent response would have save a lot more.

Pro_Extent

Yeah the local lockdown and venue capacity limits is nothing. Never mind that it actually worked at first and this outbreak is due to spread to a working class migrant region of Sydney. Victoria's a pretty good example of how successful an extreme lockdown is to prevent spread in this situation. >*make up fake milestones (70% vaccination) against the reccomendations of her CHO Do you think compliance would be vaguely high without any horizon to aim for? I'll agree that it should have had Chant's seal of approval though *if* there was the possibility for it. >"providing perfect reproductive conditions for a virus for over a week and being supprised when it grows" see above points for how Sydney was not under zero restrictions >where hatred exclusivly means towards an incompitent politician Lol. It's because she's a Liberal. Andrews fucked up in 2020 with a *significantly* easier virus to contain (source: every other leak which didn't result in exponential growth) and this place overwhelmingly defended him.

Sorry to burst your bubble but andrews is an incompitent pos, as is the qld premier.

HellsBellsGazelles

Tell me you’re racist and classist without telling me you’re racist and classist.

Pro_Extent

For fuck's sake, this is so lazy. [Do you think this guy is racist and classist?](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/aug/13/fear-and-loathing-in-western-sydney-how-nsws-covid-response-failed-migrant-communities) Working class people don't have the luxury of getting reliable income from home during lockdown. They're more likely to have essential jobs and when they don't, they're less likely to be able to do that work from home. To top it off, they are less likely to have substantial savings to tide them over during lockdowns, particularly the early part when financial assistance hasn't been fully organised by the government. Migrant communities have more people who are less capable of speaking fluent English or reading it. As a result, they're more likely to follow news sources in their native language, which makes government messaging less effective. That in turn makes them more susceptible to misinformation on social media, which is plenty dangerous as is even when people can refer you to official health advice in your own language. It's substantially worse when the official health advice is poorly translated, it doesn't inspire confidence. Put these two factors together and you have a highly challenging situation for a government to manage. Not because they're stupid or some shit, just because of the human circumstances. And sure, maybe I could have written this beforehand instead of just throwing out, "this outbreak is because of spread from working class migrants" but anyone who's paid attention must have seen this trend by now. It's just fucking ignorant to assume someone who's aware of it, "classist and racist".

You can have 1,000 cases in a day whilst still preventing thousands of cases. Eg, if no action would have caused cases to grow to 10,000 on a particular day, and restrictions in place meant there were 1,000 cases, then you’ve saved 9,000 cases from occurring. Seems there are a lot of people on here who don’t understand primary school maths.

your video needs to cut at the end to how many cases we've had today (in the thousands) and how many active cases in NSW (in the thousands) and then cut to the Directed by Robert B. Weide meme.

Nebula-_-comet

I already know when the new Fully vaccinated rule comes into place cases will jump much higher and her messaging will be "We are learning to live with it :)))" apart from the current fact that countries that are supposedly living with the virus (U.S and Britain) are currently falling apart in their hospital systems with not enough room to have everyone who has COVID hospitalised. Being vaccinated limits the reaction you have from being in ICU to more or less having a cold, so get your jabs and stay the hell home till cases drop down to below 100 and exercise by yourself to be extra safe

RBanditAU

Reminds me of the millions and millions of the Rock's fan

saidsatan

she should do a harsh lockdown now

nesrekcajkcaj

2021 hospitalization rate 4.4% ish 2020 hospitalization rate 12.4% ish. 2021 79 deaths in 15842 = 0.499% Some one do the equiv for deaths last year please.

[deleted]

What she’s talking about isn’t whether or not it reaches a thousand, she’s talking about the exponent used to reach the thousands: how much time it takes to get there. That being said, lock that bitch down like New Zealand.

Vegetable_Reality_52

1999 cases Gladys, not one fucking more

TheSnackerforkOfEmor

She's already moving the goalposts and saying that the number of cases don't matter (neglecting the fact that more cases leads to more deaths).

InitialGuava6854

Take a shot every time she says “thousands and thousands” I guarantee you’ll forget about this bullshit for a while and have a good night sleep

WeekendSignificant48

OP I love this. Should make a "gold standard" one next

hazzahazza

I had a 10 minute straight "please" montage that got nuked by the mods :/

WeekendSignificant48

Gladys must have reported it

Reddits_Worst_Night

Let's be fair, had we not go into lockdown, there would have been 10 thousand plus today.

CableGuy_97

Guyyyyys she obviously means tens of thousands 🙄🙄 At least wait another two weeks for them to get there then we can criticise her

recuptcha

You even managed to get the "green shoots" in there. BRAVO!

Top_Shift_7585

What a loser. Bring on the next election.

Substantial-Wing-625

can we turn that advertising fog horn off, literally! These mannequin's need to have a look across the ditch and observe how It should be done. Leadership and transparent I feel she/they are leading us down the garden path. These muppets have been so quick to throw in the towel from the vax debarkle to covid zero to now guys were gunna live with delta even though were in "uncharted territory and there is no roadmap" apparently. I can't keep up with the circus.. How's about we fcuked up, we let delta waltz in, we let her rip for a coupla. Then thought we maybe should have another lockey d. Just making sure we all know that nsw has the best health advice in the world, always quick to slap a claim on absolutely anything. I think we need to ask for a second opinion. We are where we are because of the health advice.. 1000's of cases and I shutter to think if we haddnt of locked down now. About 8 days too late champ Can we have someone call her out on her bs facts. Leigh sales really grilled her other night, well done, you showed her 🤥 The 1000's of deaths are a direct result of the actions of these incompetent humans, don't be fooled by the smoke and mirrors people. Here's some questions - is there any long term heath complications from catching covid ? How do you measure success of handling of pandemic? How many death's? https://www.doherty.edu.au/news-events/news/statement-on-the-doherty-institute-modelling Does anyone else read this any think oh fuck, we're fucked? In an average year of influenza, we would roughly have 600 deaths and 200,000 cases in Australia. Any death is a tragedy, but our health system can cope with this. In the COVID-19 modelling, opening up at 70% vaccine coverage of the adult population with partial public health measures, we predict 385,983 symptomatic cases and 1,457 deaths over six months. With optimal public health measures (and no lockdowns), this can be significantly reduced to 2,737 infections and 13 deaths. I'm waiting for this comedy act to finish. I think these jokers believe this shit. I don't think living with the China virus should even be an option.

rhazz

Out of spite (and the obvious benefits) VIC and ACT get back to low case numbers or zero just to see the reaction. That will leave NSW as the only state with the virus rampaging through the community and won't that be interesting to see how its spun by the feds. \*Disclaimer: Ideally NSW gets this outbreak under control and we can sail smoothly towards 70/80/90% vax rate. But you know, I also am curious to see Glady's reaction when we finally hit thousand**S** of cases. Won't that be the day!

This Labor's next election ad?

Calm_As

Taking a note out of Trump's book. Directly address and completely deny that which you are most guilty of.

Charcoul

Fuck I despise this idiot.

saint7412369

Corrupt evil bitch

Midgetwombat

We went into lockdown?!

dingdongbannu88

Florida had 17k cases yesterday. She’s doing way better than Ron DeathSentence

RepulsiveTarget8348

Stop treating us as criminals! Obviously we are not” all in this together”!

of_gold_

I really wish this stupid woman wasn’t vaccinated…

TotZoz_VFX

We need to start a change.org petition in order to see her other ear.

Sodoesopah

she's pretty fucking dense aye

r1deordie

10 days later. Not 2k yet but getting there. Vaccines must be slowing it down. I thought all the first doses and second doses that folks are getting won't boost immunity until few days/weeks later.. is that right ?

amolago

15,684 locally acquired cases reported since 16 June 2021. Certainly seems to qualify as thousands and thousands.

Algernon_Asimov

As /u/chrisjbillington pointed out [in this very thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/CoronavirusDownunder/comments/pbp08p/the_33_times_gladys_said_the_actions_of_her/hadc7sj/), about half an hour before you commented: > Without any restrictions they'd have easily had >100k cumulative cases by now, and daily cases consistently in the tens of thousands, so to be fair it's still true.

GoblinKingBitch

But if you apply the Trump theory and stop testing then you wouldn’t have to worry about all these thousands and thousands of cases.
