Long story short, streak of bad ownership making terrible decisions. Google it and you can find out all the litany of opinions. This sub is burned out on explaining it or reasoning it.

Tempe literally wants a pile of garbage more than a sports team.

There was no tax dollars, everything was going to be privately funded, but when politicians realized they wouldn’t be getting a cut because it was privately funded, various groups have opposed it at every turn.

GriffinObuffalo

Shit man that's even worse.

jnew119

Bad ownership. As another comment said, this sub is in a slump from constant explanations of this saddening reality… google will give you a lot of info

The NHL got fed up with the empty promises of a permanent arena.

M-Houndoom2

Long story short, bad ownership had fucked up the Coyotes' arena situation so badly that the Coyotes were forced to play their home games in a tiny college arena that was clearly unsuitable for the NHL. Meruelo's inability to confirm that a suitable new arena would be completed within the next few years was the straw that broke the camel's back.

braywarshawsky

The reason why it happened is because AZ natives were out of the loop, and didn't pay enough attention to this team. Yotes got riddled with bad/incompetant owners/ arena deals in the wrong part of town, etc for almost 30 years, plus with a team that really wasn't good until recently. So, bad ownership finally crapped the bed & messed up the new arena deal in the right part of town to the point where the NHL stepped in, basically forced a sale to a competent owner & moved the assets to Salt Lake City. Dumb owner still "owns" the rights to the team however... so we'll see how that pans out. Don't hold your breath though. This current guy is a dumb dumb.

TheRenster500

Bad owners could never build a strong sense of hockey community in the valley because they couldn't secure a permanent arena in a popular area so they never sold a lot of tickets or made a profit. The team was essentially NEVER REMOTELY COMPETITIVE from year to year either. Various neighborhoods in the valley kept saying no to any development because the owners couldn't prove it to be economically viable. Eventually the Commissioner Gary Bettman couldn't justify his desire for a team in AZ any longer and allowed the team to move. This was after they spent a season sharing a college arena with ASU. It just wasn't working. They're moving and renaming in Utah. AZ might get a new franchise in the future if they can secure an arena, but the time is up for now.

Mormon church bought the team. Wouldn’t have been possible without horrible ownership, but like most things in life, organized religion ruined everything.

Guy_onna_Buffalo

Yeah man, religion is why you lost your fucking hockey team.

No_Angle_8106

Yup, it is. Appreciate a soaker stopping by.

Did the facts hit too close to home?

CrashDaddy2006

I’m not Mormon either before you decide to play that card as well.

CrashDaddy2006

Nope, just an eye roll at the usual ignorant clap trap coming from tolerant people like yourself. Stay happy!

No_Angle_8106

Because I acknowledge the fact that the Mormon church runs Utah and just bought my hockey team through “Ryan Smith” means I’m looking for a “clap trap”? Wtf are you even talking about? It’s called living in reality.

CrashDaddy2006

You said organized religion ruins everything. That’s hyperbole clap trap and ignorant. You are ignorant and intolerant since it needs to be spelled out for you. Stay happy!
