I feel like the majority of players only ever play with the cult associated with their victory, and the exile dlc doesn't even include a cult

Vitztlampaehecatl

This. It's convenient to have an exalted of the victory you want. Given that, I'm surprised so many people founded a Secret Histories cult- it's the most popular aside from the main three, and it doesn't have exalted followers at all. It was the last one I made, and I didn't even bother playing through the whole run.

Nihilikara

I mean, we do have maid-in-mirrors and other similarly powerful spirits.

PissedOfBeet

They can't kidnap people tho.

volga_boat_man

Maids can also capture targets.

Vylix

i thought the winter wins? so corpse instead of prisoner?

Far inferior to Assassins. Assassins are always available (once you have them), do not need to be summoned (thus faster/cheaper), and are immune to Mystic. This also means they are never killed by a failed assassination (because they do not fail) or a blocker (because Tenacious doesn't kill the Assassin like Mystic does for summons).

And I'm one of them, honestly church of the bright edge isn't nearly as hard as people say, or I just got very lucky.

Barrogh

Different cults aren't, well, that different. I suppose some require more patience early on, but that's basically about it.

I'm having a blast with the Secret Histories cult. There is at least 2 of every aspect cultist, and 5 + 5 = 10, which is enough to almost always block a negative impact during an expedition. Then you have King Crucible and Teresa as the perfect adventuring duo. Who even needs exalted?

Barrogh

I mean, those things are pretty much the same with any other cult, so that's kinda the point. I sort of enjoy Tarantellists, they have some potential, but they are hard to make a good use of. Most of the rest are way too situational at best I would say.

There are three major distinctions between cults: How easy it is to promote followers: it's difficult to find good enough knock lore, for instance, and there are very few knock influences to use, as opposed to edge or lantern which can just use dread, fascination, or restlessness. How good the specialized cult business is: forge has good benefits, with a nice chance of a bronze spintria and no notoriety, but depending on your victory condition you may need corpses or prisoners more. How effective the followers are in vaults: all have their uses, but everything except knock has at least one summon that can provide it to pick up the slack. Overall, edge is fairly easy to promote followers in. It has easily available lore, and if you don't have much of that, you can get dread to make up the rest. Its cult business is about the same speed as imprisoning followers, but it does only take up the one verb. Edge, though, is not very useful in vaults: if you summon something for an aspect, it's likely it already has edge. Overall it's about average in terms of cults, not especially good nor bad.

MainaC

The primary advantage is good enough that it entirely changes how you deal with Hunters. Assassins succeed 100% of the time unless Tenacious negates their success. Unlike a regular failure, this will never kill the cultist. Unlike spirits, they are always available once you have them and cost nothing to use. They also do not fail against Mystic. If you have an Edge cult, it is easier and more reliable and safer to murder every single Hunter the moment they hit the board or cause any trouble than fussing around with Notoriety/Evidence removal. I would argue an Edge cult is one of the best cults in the game by far, and probably even better for speedrunning than Secret Histories, as it absolutely negates the need for caution regarding Notoriety/Evidence.

Dinkum-Thinkum

Yes, but since Knock is the Lore Which Opens you may use Knock to subvert any other lore. This means that if you’re willing to give up some fragments from other lore aspects you can easily get high level Knock lore at pretty much any point in the game.

Bmobmo64

Honestly which cult you go for doesn't matter much, I like Heart and Grail because they both have great cult business and both can promote disciples with only stuff from Morland's, Oriflamme's and SH2 vaults.

DiceMadeOfCheese

I'm convinced the vast majority of people try this game, say "JFC this thing is extremely complicated and difficult" and never play it again. I love CS but I'm pretty sure this is how it goes lol
