The boob light in the ceiling! Either directional lighting, or lean hard into the 90s vibe and get something retro light a stained glass fixture!

Solitary-Broccolus

Had to scroll too far to find this. Boob light for sure.

comFive

Yeah add the 2nd boob

Solitary-Broccolus

Nooo I cannot abide any more ceiling tiddies!

dsmemsirsn

And tassels—

dachfuerst

Top comment for me, hehe

Fruitypebblefix

I have one in my room. Now that's all I see! 😭

Solitary-Broccolus

Haha same I don't know who started calling them that but I can't unsee it. And they're frickin everywhere for some reason 😅

Lindiaaiken

They are cheap & do the job. Sadly, I have 2 in my hallway.

Equivalent_Reason894

I agree with changing the light and the flooring and maybe the faux brick. Love the green counters. Screw the suggestions to get steel appliances and replace the countertops—so it can look like every other kitchen designed in the last decade?

bulksausage

I always liked staring longingly up at them personally

Pyretta_blaze__

Sky titty.

Willr2645

~~The boob light in the ceiling! Either directional lighting, or lean hard into the 90s vibe and get something retro light a stained glass fixture!~~ Add a second boob FTFY

Zippytiewassabi

I agree if you had only 1 thing to do, with an honorable mention to that countertop. For the lights, I would put in some recessed lighting. Op can use the hole from the boob light to fish the places you want recessed, then use those clip in LED ceiling lights. If OP wanted to do more than one thing: For the countertop, a new light colored countertop quartz or granite… I would consider concrete or butcher block similar to what is on the cart in the lower left of the picture. If you wanted to do it on a budget, you could use an epoxy kit on the existing countertop to give it new life. I would paint all the cabinets white. I would also consider new floor tile if you can place on top of the existing. I would do a diluted white wash on the brick. Finally, I would replace the appliances with stainless steel.

StunningSun3384

I love how you count. I count the same way...OP said 'one thing', clearly your 'one thing' is the entire kitchen. I'm over here nodding my head at your suggestions...because, obviously...😂😂😂 Oh, and your name is AMAZING. LOVE IT...🥰

GullibleAccount7504

Totally!!!

myfckincinnamonapple

What was it with the titty lights? Why did EVERYONE put them in their homes 😂

Stanchion_Excelsior

Because it was an "upgrade" from the[ flourescent tubes with opaque plastic panels](https://st.hzcdn.com/fimgs/0672c8d4060f8ed2_0202-w500-h281-b0-p0--.jpg) that were there before.

Pleasant_Sun3175

Because that's what was in the stores.

One_More_Thing_941

It was the standard basic light put in by builders.

myfckincinnamonapple

I mean yeah these are all super valid and accurate hahaha

MKebi

Still is for some 😒

CathyC212

I am currently staring at my boob…light

Incarnated_Mote

Because they were cheap and available everywhere, and they were standard builder grade + expensive to replace

Interesting_Ad9295

A light from the brand schoolhouse could be sooo cute, and some red barstools

Wuhtthewuht

Love the idea of a stained glass fixture

SLPallday

Gonna need a stained glass light in there! Love this suggestion.

Royal-Association-79

Omg I hate boob lights with a passion

TheMysticalPlatypus

The brick is fake? I vote getting rid of the brick. Put in a nice backsplash. I don’t really like how the faux brick looks. Then next big project: flooring. I absolutely love those green countertops. It’s my favorite thing about your kitchen.

tehana02

This would by my first change.

erzulee

100% this. Change the walls; change the room. Just painting them white would be huge.

Brilliant-Stock-1766

Flooring!

VanillaAle

Agree

Moonsmom181

Also agree.

Environmental-River4

Honestly I love the countertop and faux brick, it’s nice to see something different in a kitchen for once (though green is also my favorite color so maybe I’m not a good judge lol). I think I would stain that little table next to the stove to match the cabinets and get some more sturdy stools.

LupinCANsing

I like both, but don't think they go together. That green countertop needs to be in a glam kitchen.

JupiterSkyFalls

Exactly. This is giving 90s restaurant vibes- Pizza Hut, Ryan's, Shoney's.

larryspub

I like the brick and green too. I almost feel like this would lend itself well to being a darker kitchen. Metal appliances and a darker wall. The Green needs to be present somewhere else too. 🤔

LongjumpingStand7891

I think this kitchen is cool, change the floor.

ceimi

The flooring. I think the countertops are actually really cute. I would also change the paint on the wall to black. The whole space gives art deco vibes just needs the accents to push it over the edge.

Existing_Adagio_3958

Yeah! Get some flooring to really tie in the look. Tera cotta would be real cute too

lil--ginger

What would you change the flooring to?

ceimi

I think going with a dark tile in a herringbone/chevron pattern would look awesome. Or I would go with a light colored neutral wood (neither cool or warm undertones) tile in either herringbone or chevron or laid normally. I think the space is super cute as is, the only other thing I would change is the appliances to stainless steel. Cute home OP. :) https://preview.redd.it/8ttd5qdu5vyc1.jpeg?width=520&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8c1f33344d853dd52fddc0022e4fee35f633b7d

SomethingClever70

I love the pattern, but would go with a somewhat lighter color. Dark floors show every bit of dirt, every stray hair. Unless, of course, you enjoy scrubbing floors.

Opening_Possession43

Just purchased a house with dark floors including kitchen. It shows everything. Even after vacuuming a minute later doesn't look like I did anything. And we have pets. Cats and dogs. Plus live in NC Sandhills area so sand too. Would love to replace it but it's the entire downstairs $$$$$. 😫

Cancerisbetterthanu

My mom thought she would love her beautiful black slate tiles. She never stops cleaning and never stops whining about it!

ceimi

Its the only drawback, I agree. I don't mind it personally but I'm also home 24/7 and generally enjoy cleaning as a therapy.

TLBG

I love our dark floors on main level. I like seeing the odd bit of dirt so I know when it needs cleaning. Don't mind.

lil--ginger

Ooh, that is a cool floor!

_phonesringindude

The counter is baller. Add a nice oriental runner and some more green plants by the window

0errant

The fake brick

sbtfriend

Agree! The other stuff can be mid century styled and would look nice with some plants etc. the brick doesn’t go and the fact it’s fake puts it firmly in the firing line for me

Successful-Might2193

The fake brick is also impossible to keep clean!

Sunnywithachance099

Was coming here to say this. It doesn't matter what you do, it is never clean.

spaghetti_ohhs

Cabinet faces and hardware

lil--ginger

What kind of hardware would you go with?

0errant

That's two things

rosyred-fathead

Well the hardware is on the faces

LotusGrowsFromMud

Definitely the green countertops. A nice light colored quartz would do wonders for this kitchen.

qwuzzy

The countertop is the coolest thing about this kitchen though. Quartz would just be unfortunate.

HotelRwandaBeef

My knee jerk reaction was ew those counters but after settling down I agree. I think the cabinets could use a repainting/staining to help tie the counters into something cool.

LeTrolleur

I would love to see what someone with some vision would pair with those counter tops to make this look modern, I bet it would look amazing!

D33M0ND5

Quartz looks fine but it’s boring as hell. I love this counter top lol

StunnedinTheSuburbs

I wouldn’t invest in quartz if it was just a stopgap kitchen. I would cover the countertops to take away the green.

LotusGrowsFromMud

It looks like there is nothing wrong with the oak cabinets, other than not being at the height of kitchen style right now. I suspect that some day in the future, they may be considered a classic.

lil--ginger

Honestly, I’m banking on them becoming a classic, haha!

LotusGrowsFromMud

Good for you!

saymimi

yes! don’t fall into the all white kitchen trend. I think the honeyed wood needs to go

iCantliveOnCrumbsOfD

I cannot believe this is not the top comment by an overwhelming majority. I mean I had to scroll back up and see what the name of this sub was because I thought it was "wrong comments only' , " bad advice" or something of the sort. The green countertops are so blatantly hideous Ray Charles could see that they need to go. I wish I knew a stronger word for hideous. Hideous to the 30th degree? I'm astounded, flabbergasted and perplexed that anybody would pick anything other than the cabinet as being the single thing that needs to go. Get rid of the countertop. Get rid of the brick. The boob light is the least of your concerns.

DidiStutter11

I was surprised to see how many people like this countertop.

Rheila

Ya I can’t stand the green countertops…

RageStreak

I’d get rid of the faux brick along the back wall.  I don’t hate is as a back splash but there’s too much in the room and it’s very visually noisy.

StuffNThingsK

I would lean into the retro vibe and do a large washable area rug with green in it and replace the ceiling light.

Acrobatic_Simple472

Maybe flooring? I think it’s very charming as is!

beezus_18

Cost conscious? I’d paint that brick.

CindLei-Creates

This! ^ It’ll take a bit of time, but painted or heavily white washed would be a huge change. The wood cabs seem in good shape, I’d re-stain instead of painting them.

PishiZiba

I’d get rid of the faux brick.

KarmenSophia

Countertop and sink would be at the top of my budget, too👍🏻 Next would be stainless Appl.

missannthrope1

I was thinking all black appliances.

HypnoticKitten

I am torn between countertops and cabinets

rosetintedmonocle

Same! I think the countertops could be cool with the right cabinets!

LittleMrsSwearsALot

It’s the cathedral top cabinet doors. They’re dated no matter what countertop you put under them.

lil--ginger

The cabinets are very functional, I was pleasantly surprised that all the doors and drawers open smoothly. That’s one reason I’ve been leaning towards countertop

MrsApostate

If you like the cabinets but want a slight update, consider doing new hardware. If you get some funky knobs in there, it could look pretty cool.

jojokitti123

Countertop would be my first choice

snowshelf

That brick would be my first choice.

Beebeebooboo420

Barstools

ABobby077

I think you don't have enough knee room for using bar stools here

anibanan

I’d get rid of the faux brick and change the backsplash to something fun and green. I’d also change the boob light for something that brings you joy. The cabinets are classic and in good condition, the white keeps it bright and clean, I’d lean into the fun green counter

midcenturymaiden29

I’m not sure if it’s the lighting or if the cabinets are really that yellow/orange color. It’s a big undertaking but I’d sand them all down and stain/refinish to a cooler color. I think a darker brown would be nice with the brick.

Intelligent-Kiwi-574

I don't like the backsplash. Maybe something lighter? Edit: oh, it's faux brick? I'd get rid of that.

Gva_Sikilla

The green countertop.

nugmasta

Not loving the color of the countertop

mystonedalt

Make it 4x as big and put in a screened in pool

Purple-Measurement42

Not everything needs to be boring people!! I personally love the green counter tops with the brick, it's different and cozy. I think the cabinets could be changed to match a cozier vibe. I disagree with all the comments saying get rid of the counter top and get stainless steel appliances 👎

Intelligent_Treat372

New overhead light, pendant light over the sink, large sink , I like everything else

Worried_Scarcity_440

Counter top is my favorite! I love jade green. Super cute!

soupwhoreman

It's a cute and functional kitchen. Especially since budget is a concern, I'd keep it as is for a while. Any changes to "modernize" just one element will make the rest of the elements look out of place. Spending money to replace the flooring or tear out the brick or put in new countertops is just going to be wasted. If you want a brand new kitchen, I'd save up until you can do it all.

2amazing_101

Agreed. My main suggestions are taking off the fake brick and/or painting/staining the cabinets and replacing their hardware with something unique. Since everything seems to be in such good condition, no need to replace cabinets, counter, and appliances. Just give what's some face-lifts to your personal taste. The faux brick could maybe stay with gray cabinets and better lighting, but otherwise, it should probably go, since it just clashes and makes the room feel dark and cramped.

missannthrope1

The green counter top. Maybe the hardware. Not a fan of the barstools.

lil--ginger

Don’t worry, those are the previous owner’s.

angelica-angeli

There are a lot of little things you can do to help. I'd personally look at getting a rug to place on the floor, get new hardware for the cabinets, new faucet, replace the boob light, and try under cabinet lighting, along with new stools. Otherwise I wouldn't make any big changes unless you're going to do a full remodel!

lil--ginger

Rug is a great idea for something quick and easy!

Fresh-Basket9174

The cabinets look to be in good shape, but if they are on your radar for a future remodel I would hesitate to put a lot of money into a new countertop that might not fit a cabinet redesign. I agree though, that green counter is dated and a newer one would help. I dont mind the brick backsplash, but I would lose the wall of brick. Maybe change the hardware for black. Change the outlets and switches for black as well and a new light fixture would go a long way towards freshing up for low cost

pumpkinbrownieswirl

flooring and add silver appliances

oneprestigiousplum

I do not like the flooring at all and I hate those folding stools. Cool classic leather bar stools would be awesome, especially if you can get a similar wood tone to the counters. It looks like a kitchen that I would get in a mountain air bnb, which isn’t a bad thing. I think the cabinets will look more classic instead of outdated eventually. The green counter is cool and very expensive to change.

SlowDeflation

I think the countertops are so unique and fun! I’d probably change the flooring and cabinet hardware.

shgrdrbr

is that brick-style tile or actual brick? im normally all for brick but this here is the off element imo. i love the countertop.

MmeXL

I really hate golden oak, so I’m going with painting the cabinets white. Then the green countertop and the faux brick become a feature, not a flaw.

JetFuelGenius

The countertop.

sarcasm_itsagift

Cabinets, specifically color.

southboundoft

Everything.

Pretty-Perspective15

Wow people are really hating on the green countertop! I mean, it’s not ideal but I actually do love the pop of color. The first thing I’d change is actually the boob light. It cheapens the whole look, go for something with some extra character

lil--ginger

I hated them too the first time I saw them! I agree the boob light needs to go soon!

No-Selection-7006

I’d get rid the green countertop first as well. Then I’d get rid of the stain trim piece ver the window. I think you could do something with the backsplash by lightening it it up some. Look up lime washing and German Schmear. Here’s one DIYer’s account of what she did. [https://madebymuermanns.com/blog/how-to-german-schmear-smear-brick](https://madebymuermanns.com/blog/how-to-german-schmear-smear-brick) If the bricks are really those plastic panels, you can water down some white paint and get the same effect. Staining the cabinets darker would be stunning with the lighter brick. Painting oak cabinets require a lot more work because of the open stain. This photo is one of my favorite kitchens with a brick backsplash. Although it’s laid out in a different pattern than yours, you can still improve the look and maybe make it a real focal point! https://preview.redd.it/2s6arlsxvuyc1.jpeg?width=660&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a246bfad113597035e73d5b4bb2a36ad3e5fe26

BaBaSmith10

The flooring and the brick wall

Gingerbeer03

The cabinet door knobs. Replace them with something simple

Thneed1

Change the hardware. If everything else is in good condition, it looks nice enough to leave. It’s got sone good character.

Ill-Chemical-348

I would start with the floor and get a nice light colored wood look to replace the tile. Keep the brick for now. Take time to decide on the style and layout of the kitchen before making any major changes. Brick is really nice when it's done well. https://www.decoist.com/brick-wall-kitchen-ideas/

Ladydragan49

The appliances

audvisial

The floor. I could very much work with the green countertops. The floor needs to be warmed up.

SofiaDeo

Not have the stove/oven next to the fridge. If someone's house had a screwed up setup like that, so poorly planned, I would wonder what other messed up things went on in the build I couldn't see.

Isgortio

The bar stools look like they only cost a tenner, and you'd only be able to sit on them for 5 minutes before getting really uncomfortable. So, them.

lil--ginger

Fortunately, they’re not mine, so they’re already gone!

tessie33

I love the green countertops.Perhaps I would add copper paint to the ceiling.Look at Cameron Diaz New York kitchen. It looks fantastic together green and copper

crawandpron

why is no one saying the brick? it feels like an outdoor space to me

Databit

1 thing? Probably move those mitts before they caught fire

13_Years_Then_Banned

Every.

uber-chica

The green Formica countertop.

affectionate_piranha

That it's not on fire. That's a travesty

Full-Problem7395

Lean into the look and update the floor to match the 90s italiano

SweetLeaf2021

Just-Contest-6128

The green omg

TalulaOblongata

I’d replace the counters to the white quartz and then DIY paint the brick backsplash tiles to be white. Then as you can, replace the appliances. New light. Accessorize with a few standout accessories - make a trip to home goods or target and get a few key items - like a bold ceramic vase, a fruit bowl, hand towels, etc. maybe a nicely framed piece of art and all that stuff should tie together color-wise. Add a couple of plants.

DapperWhiskey

The countertops.

Caranne53

Those countertops are killin me Larry. Lighting is also and easy fix

PleasantJules

Reface the cabinets

Theblessing8386

Counter top is gross rest is fine

Eiffel-Tower777

Lose the green counter tops 👍

chloe38

I know green is all the rage right now, I had my green phase 2 yrs ago and I'm over it now lol. I would definitely change those counters. The white as you said would look nice

CleanSherbert00

I’ve seen someone with those color cabinets keep them and add white countertops. They swapped the hardware for black handles. It looked SO good, and would honestly work well with the brick. I would do that, and add a kitchen-safe area rug that has some of the shades of red from the brick. Oh, and the boob light of course but that’s an easy swap! But if I had to choose only one thing to update, the counters for sure! The green is cool but it would require everything else to be changed, IMO.

DixieBelleTc

Everything

napteamqueen

Get rid of that god awful green countertop.

Proud-Cartoonist-431

Those bricks are out of fashion or at least whitewash them a bit, or the part behind the kitchen cabibets. Too much clashing everything and the traditional classical style.

msmaynards

I like the green counter with the cabinets better than the brick with the counters and dislike the counters with the brick. I'd paint the brick and enjoy having a counter that's not like everybody else's. Easier to paint than remove and patch and it adds a nice texture. Would be fun finding a backsplash to go with the rich green counter though.

JustWowinCA

I agree-new white countertop, it would change everything up.

lulububudu

I love the countertops, brick wall, cabinets and even the appliances in white blend in quite well; I think the flooring doesn’t fit that clean/mid century/homey vibe. Maybe also some under cabinet lighting would spice it up.

jmurphy42

I would love to see that countertop go, but only get rid of it now if you’re keeping those lower cabinets the same ultimately. You don’t want to be buying the new countertop twice.

Uncertn_Laaife

Cabinet paint/color.

_Roxxs_

Prestigious_Bar_4244

I would change all of that gold tone wood. The green countertop and brick are features, not bugs!

nychearts812

Definitely the floor and the green counter!!!

NoOnSB277

Cabinet color could be changed for a big improvement. I am on the fence about the green counter, I think depending on the counter upgrade it could look really nice. Switching to just white countertop sounds like a downgrade to be honest. Too cookie cutter.

The cabinets. Something lighter and more modern. I think the green countertop is kinda cool

Misten808

I love the countertops and the bare brick. It's so nice to see something with personality, they're key features to keep! You could paint the cupboard doors and drawer fronts as a stop gap. Feel like the floor would work better darker

bellelovesdonuts

Countertop or handles

Remarkable_Invite_56

I would just update the countertop….

Particular-Peanut-64

Maybe lime wash the brick to a white. And get a rug w green accents, pot holders, towels in the same color green as the counters. From the pics, the counters look great. Jade theme. And maybe a pothos plants w vargiated leaves. The brick is throwing off the color theme, of green, white and honey oak. When you add green accents, it makes the counter choice intentional. Good luck
