I think rating dinosaurs is overrated.

TheGermanHades

And having them compete against each other all the time is also overrated.

Dusky_Dawn210

Counter argument! I’m right you’re wrong! /j if it wasn’t obvious

Dilahk5915

"Overrated" dinos do exists, atleast in the pop culture side of paleo. People usually over exaggerate the power of these creatures to an extent that they treat them like monsters not animals. For instance, you might see a comment that would suggest the trex cant lose against any therapod or other dinos, in that sense that person has 'overated' the trex. They disregard facts to fit what they like. Unfortuantly this is actually not rare with actual paleontologists.

loki130

I mean ultimately I just don’t think their value has much to do with who they could beat in a fight

Veloci-RKPTR

Nice argument, but unfortunately: My favorite dinosaur can beat up YOUR favorite dinosaur!

mcyoungmoney

I have seen a lot of edgelords calling T.Rex "overrated."

Stegouros

This is the reason why I love all the dinosaurs that don’t yet have the fame that they deserve, once every dinosaur is equally famous, then I’ll be happy with it. They all deserve T. rex fame.

NB-NEURODIVERGENT

It is silly but everyone has their favourites. I’m chill with my Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis fav baby as long as everyone agrees dino reddits are for Dino’s and ornithology reddits are for modern birds. We all know what I’m talking about

Stegouros

Yes, dino reddits are for ALL dinosaurs. Avian or non-avian, that doesn’t change how much of a dinosaur they are. They are still equally valid as under cladistics, you can’t leave the group that your ancestors were in. A house sparrow has non-avian dinosaur ancestors, so it’s a dinosaur. Plus, dinosaurs are defined as ‘the last common ancestor of D. carnegii, T. horridus and P. domesticus and all of its descendants’. P. domesticus is the house sparrow, it is a dinosaur by the definition of dinosaur - and it’s also a bird.

So your saying if every person in North America used r/dinosaurs and r/paleontology as their instagram dump for every, and I mean every, image they take of pigeons, blue jays, robins, swallows etc that’d be allowed even if it chokes out any other post? Even if there were a perfectly good receptacle for it in r/ornithology

Stegouros

This sub has a rule against low effort, so if it is deemed low effort it would be removed. Also, try getting every person in North America to do that. And it is out of place in r/Paleontology as that is for extinct animals, but here it would be fine for a bird photo. I just doubt that would ever happen. But yes, it is fine for jays, blue tits, robins, pigeons and any other bird in here, just as it is for there to be T. rex post every day. Tier lists are more out of place than a bird photo here.

What I think, is humanity is facing more serious problems😅like im just here for the first time on dinosaur reddit because *i kinda like dinosaurs* and i wanted to read some exciting threads but damn tribalism and favorism?😄damn these bad boys died a minimum of 65 millions years ago, i dont think they are upset over not being the favorite type of dino of some skinny talking monkey or that the skinny monkey thinks the spinosaurus is kinda overrated among the dino people and in the media😄

YaRinGEE

**READ THE WHOLE COMMENT PLEASE.** Regarding my post about Spinosaurus. I dont think it's improper to say an animal is overrated. A lot of animals are portrayed through media and until you can see them going about their lives, it's kind of hard to imagine them as animals doing what they do. We do this with other people on the internet all the time. Most humans are focused on their own lives rather than others and we dont tend to think about other people and what they do in their day-to-day. Which is another reason why an animal can be overrated because we say certain celebrities are overrated all the time and yet, they're also animals, they have purpose and they go about their daily lives. Adding onto this, most paleontology is resolved around fossils and fossils tend to not tell us much about how the animal lives. Granted, fossils can inform us of a lot, we know how Tyrannosaurus likely hunted because of this and the different growth stages throughout that animal's life however, it's still kind of a mystery. Nanotyrannus keeps Juvi Rex lovers on their toes, even if evidence isnt quite solid for it. Meaning most of what we can assume about these animals, is speculation and in a way, makes their behavior fictitious. We can argue all we want about Spinosaurus being a strict piscivore or being more like a Crocodile and ambushing its prey. We can argue whether or not Spinosaurus was even capable of swimming. But at the end of the day, no matter what we settle on, until there's solid evidence for it, it's speculation. Now at the end of this comment, im concluding that i dont think it's unfair to say an animal is overrated, living, extinct or completely fiction. However I do want to clarify that I dont think we should label them as overrated or underrated and I'm totally being hypocrite when I say this but I genuinely stand by that. They ARE animals and we should love them no matter what. I have nothing against Spinosaurus, I love the animal actually and the mystery that surrounds it is fascinating. Whether we're being serious about Spinosaurus swimming or joking about the sail being used for flight, I love the animal and love the joy that it brings me and others. I love Spinosaurus, Dinosaurs and all animals and we shouldnt rate them no matter what but there are millions of people who will still have opinions and who will still refer to them as overrated or underrated so when we do use these terms, I don't think it's wrong to do so.
