You never checked the oil in 12000 miles? If it only had 2 quarts in it, you may have fried the motor due to lack of oil….

Tiny_Bid7042

When I purchased it had 9,000 miles on it At dealership I changed the oil in January with 12,444k miles, then just changed again at 22,100k I thought with synthetic you change oil every 10k I also thought the light would come on if it didn’t have oil! I guess not. This is my first Durango I used to drive a Nissan and before that a Toyota.

Ok_Victory6387

You have to manually check your oil level at least every thousand miles or so.

Justliketoeatfood

Yeah I don’t care what they say I still change mine every 3-4k never had any issues I keep all my cars for over ten years though. And yes I frequently look at all the fluid levels and break fluid is important to if you have stopped hard or aggressively you might have to inspect your rotors and break fluid bulb

_Variance_

Isn't it still under warranty? Just take it to a Dodge dealer?

Big_D_Mac

Synthetic does advertise "protection for 10,000 miles" but I still wouldn't trust that. 5,000 is a safe bet. As far as what damage has been (or could have been) done, it's hard to tell. I see you checked and it was on 10k, like the dealer suggested.... you should still be under warranty do it may be worth having the dealer check it out. Just make sure and say something along the lines of "I was going by what you said" as far as going that long between oil changes.

Tiny_Bid7042

It’s “dodge certified pre owned” warranty I’ll bring it to a dealer and just tell them it’s not running the same.

Big_D_Mac

Hopefully that works 😎

Hifilistener

God Speed. I am a Mopar guy but the dealerships are the absolute worst. Absolutely trash.

RichardSober

If you think dealers are bad, wait until your SiriusXM is going to expire...

Hifilistener

SXM is easy to deal with.

Maximum-Following-31

Call them every 4 months and get there latest deals.. I pay $4 a month and have the full XM package for 12 months..

Tiny_Bid7042

I’m in NYC my expectations are really low for the dealership

Tiny_Bid7042

I’ve struck a chord here, I’m sorry. I joined this forum in Sept to learn more about this car I haven’t seen it mentioned that I gotta get synthetic oil changed less than every 10k miles. What’s recommended? 5k? I figured a light would come on and indicate something. Damn. 😟

ModSpdSomDrg

Just do your oil change and let it eat. I can’t believe it only had 2 qts in it. Maybe 2 low but not just 2. You would have had oil pressure issues. Also, low pressure is not going to impact speed until it’s locked up. Just check it going forward and call it a day. I used to change every 3k and now go off the meter at about 20% left. If when you change the oil looks burnt to shit change it sooner. If you are burning through 8 qts in 10k miles then sell the car. You have a big ass issue with a new car. You should not be burning anything and or 1/2 a qt at most. Change your own oil and you know your car.

jonm61

The owners manual says 10k or 1 year. We're running 5w20 fully synthetic, which is rated for up to 15k miles. These people who are talking about 3k or 5k oil changes are stuck in the days of 10w40 and 10w30 non synthetic oils, when you had damn well better change your oil at those intervals. Just like we have 100k mile coolant, and transmission fluid now, which would've been unheard of back in the days of the 3k mile oil change. 🙄 Sure, if you want to waste money, you can change your oil every 3k or 5k miles. On these vehicles, with this oil, it's completely unnecessary. The computer is monitoring your driving, and the outside environment. It's combining that data to estimate the oil life remaining, and then telling you when to change it. If you want to be cautious, change it at 75 or 80%. These oil life monitoring systems have over a decade of use under their belts. American and Japanese manufacturers are all using them. I've had 6 vehicles, 4 American and 2 Japanese, with oil life monitors on them. They all ran somewhere around 10k miles. Never exactly 10k, but around there. Now, how miles do you have total? There have been some reports about the V-6 using oil, especially in the break in period, but it can happen after as well.

Tiny_Bid7042

I’m at 22,800 miles now

Pitiful-Lion-5155

3-4k every car fuck what dealer sats they rather have your car break down and fix it themselves for more revenue 3-4k miles 4k is pushin it

PleasantlyNumb1

Our 2016 Limited v6 and our 2021 RT TNG both have an oil life indicator that displays life from 100% oil life (0 miles driven since changed and reset) to 0% life (10000 miles driven/ change oil). Check your manual and instrument cluster for such indicator and reset it at oil change. If the oil was really at 2Qts, that sounds suspicious and something else going on. Check your oil level weekly after the change and look for leaks, pinging, etc. Take it in for inspection and get it fixed. If certified, the car has a 100k power train warranty.

screenprince

Different question. My 2018 has 42k miles, and the last two times I went for an oil change, they told me I was due to have the oil in the rear differential changed. I don't recall ever having that done on my other cars. Is that really a thing, and how often?

Maximum-Following-31

If you have an AWD vehicle it’s good to check your differential fluid level.. That oil breaks down and will cause serious damage..

HemiGo

Look in your owners manual for differential fluid change intervals. It is just as important to change it as the engine oil. Believe for the V6 awd it is 30,000miles.

RichardSober

>when the light came on What light? Low oil pressure? Check engine? Change oil? 10k in 1 year without the change is not enough to kill anything. That's basically your allowed limit. Open your car manual, read "SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE" for details. If you didn't drive more than 10k in 1 year on same oil, you should be covered by your warranty.

Tiny_Bid7042

Change oil message I put 12k miles in 8 months There’s a mileage limit on certified pre-owned warranties?

RichardSober

Oil change timer should be set to 10k miles for all vehicles and should show up \~500 miles before you reach 10k. This limit can be automatically decreased by the vehicle based on your driving style. In short words, it's highly unlikely you drove 12k miles and it's highly unlikely someone drained 2 Qt of oil from your engine when the low oil pressure light was off. Your story doesn't make sense so far.

Tiny_Bid7042

Low pressure light did not come on so maybe mechanic was exaggerating or just lying when he told me there was no oil on the car—but honestly it was not running right and after the oil change got much better but still doesn’t feel the same. Low oil pressure warning never happened. Oil change message appeared so I took it in. Next time I won’t wait for the messages I’ll check I should edit the original post I just found the service receipt oil was changed at 12k then at 22k mileage

RichardSober

If you believe you lost a lot of oil and your oil pressure switch failed to inform you, that means you still have a problem and you leak or burn your oil. Anyway, you should see that on your dipstick. The distance between Min and Max is \~1 Qt. At very least check your oil level regularly and be ready to claim the warranty if you have any.

Tiny_Bid7042

Ok thank you, I’ll check more often and if it’s leaking or burning I hope that can be covered.

jonm61

10k isn't a hard limit. The computer estimates the oil life based on driving conditions and outside temperatures, and sets the change light when it determines it's time.

Suchdeathwow

Yeah it's probably fried. It's good to change every 4-5000 miles imo. It's an investment, treat it as such lol

2018hellcat

You can never change the oil too soon. I personally changed all the oil in my vehicles at 5000 KM or 3100 miles. I use Pennzoil ultra platinum which is a full synthetic. Also check you oil regularly

SirGonzo99

Why would you not change oil around 5k. Seriously????? 12k miles?? Who da fuq said to go 12? And you didn't even check the oil level, especially on the Hem? You're an idiot.

Tiny_Bid7042

What’s on the hem? You mean hemi? I said it’s a gt plus

SirGonzo99

Swore I read it was a Hemi. I have a GT Plus, 2021 and I change my oil after 4k. Was told I could wait till 6-8k but there's no way I'd wait till 8k. I'm used to changing oil every 3 months or so or 1500 miles. This new oil they use in this V6 is new to me, but there's no way I'd go past 5k. Still feel that's way too much, but Lithia hasn't said anything yet, so I must be doing ok.

Tiny_Bid7042

The dealership told me to change the oil every 10K so that’s what da fuq I did. I just checked the last service was 10k miles ago not 12
