How to Train Your Dragon has a plethora of genius attributes built and fabricated into its music. It tells stories, conveys emotions. The whole track means something in every scene it’s in. Little details like how Toothless and Hiccup had separate themes at the beginning of the film and then they combine in that stunning test flight scene.
John Powell is such an underrated genius. Brilliant use of leitmotifs like you mentioned, and he also drew a lot of inspiration from Sibelius and Nordic folk music. It’s such a beloved OST but it’s also incredible from a purely compositional perspective
