I am endlessly pushing mine off of me. Finally trained her to sleep next to the bed and not literally on top of me. Huge win. Edit: cuddly to the point of clingy haha. Love her to bits tho

allisun-flower

How lol

unseatingBread

HAHA. Literally no idea. We decided to no longer use this mattress topper we had on the bed. It just sat on the side of the bed for a week and she slept there instead. When we got rid of it we just moved her bed there and now she just sleeps there. I think the big thing was just having her bed on the side instead of at the foot. But no idea why. Edit: I should say we did do LOTS of rewarding every time we told her to get off before this happened so a mix of just positive reinforcement and figuring out that she was more comfortable sleeping beside us vs at our feet.

dathamir

My wife would love to have our setter sleep on the bed, but I insisted she sleep in her crate. I my experience, the closer you are to them (play, train, etc.), the more they want to be with you. Mine just love being outside all the time though, so I watch her from inside while I work from home loll Sometimes she insist to climb on me while I work though, not the easiest feat to do with her size haha

unseatingBread

Definitely agree with this. Also good on you for keeping with the crate. Ours slept in the crate for the first couple puppy years just fine! And then she would started crying to come cuddle at 6am and we let her out. And then it was 5am.... and then it was 4am... and then it was 3am... Such a lippery slope haha.

dathamir

Haha she didn't celebrate her first birthday yet, so we'll see! I slept downstairs with her the first few nights (her in her crate and me on the sofa). We got soft pine floors upstrairs so she's not allowed to climb the stairs where our bedrooms are.

SilasBalto

Absolute velcro.

Rockymntbreeze

Ugh now I really want one. We have a pittie who is that way, and I absolutely love her.

I-Has-A-Name

My setter is a massive cuddle bug. If I'm laying down he's right there. Even when I let him out, he'll wait by the door until I go out with him to play / use bathroom.

ValleyGrouch

I'm on my fourth and fifth English and the latter is my first face-licker. He seems to be so grateful he was adopted and loves his new dad.

SweetLittleFox

Definitely work with a breeder to find a pup with a temperament suited to your pace. Both setters I’ve had have been absolute Velcro dog cuddlebugs, but some of them do have an independent streak that magnifies especially in teenage years. But honestly they’re absolute sweethearts, 11/10 dogs, would always recommend. They’ve spoiled me so much for anything else.

Long_Audience4403

It's hard to go back once you've had a setter! 11/10 for sure

What does it cost to adopt a setter from Turkey?

SilasBalto

How would I go about finding a homeless setter in Turkey? How would I go about finding someone willing to fly the dog here? It seems like a logistical nightmare if there isn't a rescue group coordinating it.

birda13

Because you can adopt or shop responsibly. Many of us hunt our setters and expect them to perform in the field. Importing a dog that is not proven in the field is a huge waste on both the owner and the dog. Why gamble the time and money on an unproven dog that is likely not bred for the conditions and game we hunt here. And frankly adopting a dog from halfway around the world where you don’t know its temperament besides what the rescue group claims is risky. I have friends that did that. The dog they got was claimed to be social and friendly with kids and other dogs turned out not to be.

My hunting dog is a pet 365 days a year. She’s asleep under my desk as I type this. A dog from a breeder is just as well of a good companion. I knew the temperament of her father, mother and grandparents. I knew she’d have an off switch in the house, I knew she would be friendly but independent, I knew how the dogs she was bred from held up conformation wise, and also in my circumstance I knew how she would hunt. Buying a dog and knowing what to expect is just as valid as adopting. Folks should get the dog that works from them, whether that is adoption or buying from a breeder. The dog world isn’t black and white.

SilasBalto

I went with a breeder because I wanted a healthy dog as a palate cleanser between rescues. It's an incredible relief to just enjoy my dog and not constantly be dealing with some health issue due to careless breeding or a behavior issue from a poor upbringing. I know i can take this pup and pursue whatever dog sport I feel like. A good breeder does the genetic testing recommended by the OFA, the dogs temperaments are predictable and really with our big brains this is the way ALL dogs should be produced. Another thing to add is that rescuing is a wonderful thing, but not all rescues are ethical. There have been busts of "rescues" basically acting as dog brokers and making a huge profit flipping dogs. The whole "adopt don't shop" really throws all nuance out of the discussion.

Rockymntbreeze

Awesome thank you. We will absolutely try to adopt before we would ever buy. We rescued a GPS/Pit mix and she’s the sweetest dog I’ve ever met.

punkrawrxx

Why do Americans always need to clean up after other countries? Adopt or shop. I don’t want a setter from Greece, if we’re importing dogs just so we can keep rescuing that’s stupid. Have you seen how many dogs are coming in with diseases that aren’t in America? Hundreds. Putting dogs already here at risk.

Rockymntbreeze

Ugh you guys are making me want one. We just moved to several acres and looking to give another fur baby a place to run.

SuperSynapse

Oh, you have the PERFECT setup for an English Setter! What you don't want is one in a cramped apartment.

Rockymntbreeze

No way. Would never do that to a dog that needs to run. Currently have 4 dogs. So maxed out. Butttt one a setter is my next dog.

Thrillhouse763

That's a Setter dream house.

Rockymntbreeze

We moved from a small cookie cutter with a small backyard to 10 acres. We can’t get our Aussie to come inside. He’s passed on the couch every evening. It’s gives me so much joy.

Witty_Ad4494

My most independent setter had to be pried from my side with a jackhammer. My most snuggly setter would literally lay stretched out on me on the sofa. Wonderful dogs, great in the field and equally great in the house. My favorite breed by far.

SnooSprouts1899

They’re the BEST dogs ever. I love and wanted a dog that was like a Velcro dog! My setter is stuck to my side all the time but not in an anxious way. He simply loves being near me but he’s also ok if we are out of town. He sleeps on the bed with us and if I move, he moves so he’s always touching me 😂 the best best best dog!

[deleted]

Best Dogs Ever!

No_Specific8175

My 2 year old would live inside me if she could. My 9 year old is sweet and cuddly but isn’t quite as invasive. My 2 year old was a runt, and I feel like that may have made her more clingy and lick-y. My old dog will get right up in my face…an inch away…just to sniff me, but no licks. You just have to let the other one do it or she won’t leave you alone…3 licks, then get off me!

No_Specific8175

Oh it’s also not really cuddly OR independent. It’s both. They’re both really stubborn dogs, but especially my younger one.

hinleybear13

My 65 pound setter Otis literally sits on my chest, climbs into chairs to be with me, and snuggles up under our arms in bed. If I could show you all the pics where he’s snuggled up to me, it would be half my camera roll. My other setter Garvey isn’t this extreme, but he’s still a big snuggler and will lay with his head on your lap or on your chest. He’s more independent and stubborn, but still an absolutely wonderful cuddler. I love them so much.

SuperSynapse

Our setter is very cuddly when he's tired, but if he hasn't run for 4 hours flat because it's a rainy day he will pace and move around to different parts of the room we are in unless we're watching a movie past midnight. Ours needs LOTS of physical and mental stimulation, so active playing, walking, learning tricks, doing (and smelling) new things, and being able to roam free on "hunts" daily are a must for us. To be clear we have a Llewellyn setter, so beyond individual dogs, I believe that's more prevalent of a trait for them. Very active breed! TLDR from our experience: A tired setter is a happy and cuddly setter. A bored setter paces, whines a lot, gets over-sensitive to something moving outside, and sometimes looks for ways to get into trouble to get your attention.

birda13

Quite frankly my current female is more cat like. She is independent and wants attention/cuddles on her terms. And when it’s her terms that does mean she’s laying on top of you on the couch lol. Her mother and grandmother were like that so again it’s an individual dog thing.

ThatOneTubaMan

Our setter's favorite activity, besides chasing bugs and bird shadows outback, is climbing on top of my mom and dad and laying down on their faces like she's smothering them

No-Specific9242

Mine just turned five months old yesterday his name is Elvis. He is absolutely the greatest dog I’ve ever had. I was a veterinary manager for 40 years. I got mine from a breeder in Georgia here Atlanta. I actually have a deposit for a female due mid May I love this dog so much I started a YouTube channel because there are hardly any videos about this breed. If you want to check it out it’s the English setter pup get one you won’t be sorry

Rockymntbreeze

Thanks so much! A think a setter will be our next dog. We have 4 dogs right now, but we have a lot of property. We all sleep in a king size bed together. There might be room for one more once all of ours get a bit older.

No-Specific9242

4 dogs! God bless you 😁 if you need a breeder when you’re ready lol daybreakenglishsetters. I’m naming the girl Prescilla.

Rockymntbreeze

Luckily we have 10 acres for them to get their energy out. One more might be just too many. We have to vacuum everyday lol! Thanks so much!

Pitiful_Bunch_2290

Mine is a cuddle monster. Clingiest baby ever. I love it.

Rockymntbreeze

Awwww I love it

alicat777777

Great personalities. My dog loves being near me but also loves running in the yard looking at birds and can do that for a hour at a time.

tuckz22

A lot of people here are saying they are very snuggly but mine is very independent. He’ll snuggle with me if I lay down on the couch at the end of the day with a blanket but other than that he’s at my feet or on his dog bed. I have him sleep in a kennel so I can’t speak on that part. When he’s outside he does keep an eye on me but generally likes to do his own thing and not stick right by my side but then again he is a hunting dog and is bred to be a ways ahead of me hunting.

__ThePasanger__

I had two English Setters, I find them more independent than Labradors, goldens and so on in the sense that they don't try to please you and they can be on their own without making a drama, but they love to cuddle and get pet, they are the perfect dogs for me, but bare in mind that they are super active, I have to walk with mine a lot to get her tired, but at home she behaves great.

[deleted]

My setter thinks he's a lap dog.

hellosweetiefluff

Completely affectionate! Just have a secure yard 😂

nbb333

Here to add to the choir. Mine is the biggest snugglebug I’ve ever come across. Absolutely will not leave my lap, literally straddles me in the morning to wake me up, wants to sleep in bed with me, is like glue when we’re on the couch etc. And just the sweetest, kindest dog. I almost said gentle which he is but he definitely likes to play rough. Outside he’s almost totally different! He wants to either chase animals, point at birds, explore, or hunt something. At the dog park he is so independent not only does he not stay by me (although he constantly comes back to check on me) he barely plays with other dogs! When he does play with dogs he is fantastic, very gentle and never mean. I couldn’t recommend a setter enough. Elton is my first but will definitely not be my last. The only thing I’m worried about is if I were to get a 2nd one if I’d be able to give him the amount of love he’s used to. I think he might get a little jealous if there was a 2nd dog around 😂

LudwigVan17

Complete Velcro dogs but that also comes with a heavy dose of separation anxiety. Can’t believe that hasn’t been mentioned yet. Any Velcro breed such as setters, vislas, weimeraniers etc are prone to separation anxiety. If there’s nobody in your home for long periods at a time, then it’s not the breed for you.

djdadzone

Ours is a Velcro dog. We run a business from home half the time and are able to take him on lots of runs and camping trips. Just be prepared for lots of fetch and activating their instincts they’ve been bred for. They hunt endlessly, treeing squirrels and ours is unstoppable if a groundhog or possum dares to enter the yard. Keeps the garden safe but it’s not a lighthearted moment.

amwajguy

Mine is a professional when it comes to snuggles. Lovable to their core and a little silly. So happy with my buddy.

forgot2wipee

Our setter is one of the most affectionate pets I have ever owned. My partner finds us both most winter mornings cuddled up on the couch spooning.

precipe1234

My first setter was a total love bug and wanted to be touching me and cuddling at all times. The setter I have now is total opposite. He prefers to lay by himself in a room alone most of the time. Loves me to death, loyal to a fault, but incredibly independent and aloof. Took me bit to adjust, but he's the dog love of my life now.
