There has been a bit of an outrage recently as 3 months after disabling it, Sony is now forcing players to have an PSN account linked to their steam to be able to play the game it was required since day 1 however they disabled it and there was no clear announcement about it Afaik the problem is that some places have no access to PSN, which makes it so anyone within a region where PSN isn't available will lose access to their game

Now I'll admit I'm a bit slow so please be patient with me. From what I'm reading it reads to me like people have to link a PSN account to play a steam game. Not only is that an issue for people who can't... What about people who don't have a PlayStation? Like can you make a PSN account? And even if you can that feels weird. Seems really weird to reinstate something like that after they've taken people's money. If it was that important they should have stuck with it and made it clear so some people wouldn't waste money, if you ask me. Idk feels a bit shady. ETA: That's not even getting into all the people I've seen saying they're not comfortable doing that due to security concerns!

You don't need to own a PS4 or 5 to create an account, but another problem people have is not wanting to because of data issues and all The reason they also disabled it in the 1st place was because of server issues at the time

Still icky but maybe not shady. Thanks for the info! I wasn't sure and didn't want to assume because knowing my luck someone would be like actually yeah you need that. And yeah edited in there's been concerns about security.

However, Sony was able to retake the accounts in relatively short order. >**December 2014: PlayStation Network Taken Down by Christmas DDoS Attack** While this attack didn’t involve stolen data, a December 2014 DDoS attack did make for a less than joyous Christmas for up to 160 million gamers. A group called Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for taking down the networks, overloading the systems to ensure others couldn’t make use of the services. ... etc We know that having a PSN account is not neccesary to play the game as it's been possible to play the game up until now, and it is not used to verify or connect players across platforms or enable extra features that are currently not available. All it really does is give Sony access to information about the players (and we know that Sony has a track record of dodgy security) and I bet that in the agreement signed when making the account there are clauses about Sony being able to obtain, track, store and sell your user data to third-party partners for advertising and other reasons.

Gaming company's should start placing zip bombs in the files incase they get their data stolen

Modern gaming should be avoided like the plague. The last $60 I spent on a game was a few months ago when I bought Parasite Eve 1 for the PS1 lmfao. Good retro games are worth every penny.

The difference between these two sentiments which is relevant is that people who laud the silent era or other past eras of a medium are usually talking about quality, whereas people who laud previous eras or complain about the current era of gaming specifically are talking about exploitative and predatory monetization practices. No one is denying that games today can indeed still be great and better than past games, but accessing those games has become increasingly problematic. For example, in many cases people are being asked to pay exorbitant prices for what are simply incomplete products. We're also now seeing access to said products being unceremoniously revoked retroactively in some cases; products that people paid for which by modern TOUs they simply don't own.

back in my day we had 3 tries to beat the whole game what the fuck is a checkpoint?

enigmatic_vagabond

"good" and "retro" is an oxymoron. Moronic games for moronic people

Yodas_Ear

Also being on steam you use your steam account. Having to use a 3rd party account for a steam game is balls.
