People who take stimulants such as speed, meth, adderall, and cocaine in recreational dosages will often feel the need to be constantly moving (normally it’s a subconscious feeling) which will often result in the overuse of their jaws (grinding or feeling the need to chew). That’s why a lot of meth heads carry or have an abundance of chewing gum, so they don’t grind their teeth when they are tweaking (aka high on a stimulant) which is most likely meth due to it being very cheap and easier to make than other stimulants. Also not everyone has the same side effects or reactions to drugs (illegal, prescription, or otherwise) so your anecdotal experiences are not what everyone encounters.
Edited for clarity.
Rats do something called bruxing which is the same thing! They grind their front incisors which also makes their eyes bulge out. This is also called boggling: https://youtu.be/Z0t_Ofa8IUE?si=HQ71ThybfDTD3qoM
Rats do this when they are happy, it’s really cute to see in person, it means they feel comfortable around you
It’s the ADHD. Stimulants in people with ADHD also work on the executive function area of the brain, which often gives them more control than they had without.
It could be a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium has a role in muscle relaxation (hence partially why it is used in laxatives, because it relaxes the sphincter). A deficiency can cause your muscles to be tight all the time. Potassium, calcium and sodium all play a role in how muscles tighten and relax.
You should probably see a medical professional to have a blood test done to check for any deficiencies or abnormalities as bruxism can have numerous causes and can be really bad for your teeth and gums. Too much grinding can not only wear out your teeth but also cause your gums to recede.
Might be anxiety or anger that is unexpressed or unprocessed. Maybe some meditation or therapy could help.
How do you feel when you grind your teeth? Do you notice it? When you stop, do you also notice your shoulders are clenched or high? Do you take time throughout the day to relax?
Also, do you drink a lot of coffee? Caffeine is a stimulant.
Some people grind their teeth while sleeping, so dentists usually prescript a muscle relaxant plate in those cases. It is also pretty common on people with a lot of stress and anxiety.

Some people like your just grind their teeth for other reasons. Could be stress related, anxiety, or a number of other things. The reason for why stimulants cause it is because it’s too much for your body to process. If you took a low enough amount of it then you would probably not experience that side effect but you wouldn’t feel as euphoric more than likely. I’m not a medical professional but taking a depressant will most likely not solve your problem
In the nineties - zeros, the Dutch “gabber” scene used pacifiers. It became a trend for a short while

Yes, because ecstasy is a stimulant. "Wanting oral stimulation" is a weird way to phrase it lol, your mouth is already stimulated from the drugs. The pacifier is an outlet for the stimulation, same as chewing gum, which is preferable to grinding down on your own teeth.
I think they meant it became a global trend. It was def a part of the US rave scene for a while but I haven't seen a club kid wearing/carrying a pacifier here for years.
My brush with ecstasy, assumedly some amount of meth in the pressy, the jaw clenching and teeth grinding is entirely automatic. You don't do it to not draw attention or whatever. The gum is to prevent you from doing damage to yourself. I mean, I'm glad you have no experience in dangerous narcotics pal, but don't insert narrative that doesn't need to be.
Obviously it’s not about the gum itself as I stated, people do that when they are high on the stimulant. People who are experienced stimulant drug users carry and use gum because of this side effect. You disagree?
Yeah idk wtf that dude is talking about.
My flamingo told me that when he used to do stimulants he would start to clench his beak a lot. Without the gum it would hurt a lot more and his beak was wearing down
I'm more confused, because I DO this when high. I assume my tolerance is low, or something, cause I take half a hit of stuff from the dispensary, and I don't remember where my neck is, if my tongue is there, and if it's day or night.
Eh. I have this. Too much sun on my forehead and scalp cause an autoimmune reaction. It runs in the family. It gets worse the older we get.
My immune system: "Oh, an extremely mild sunburn? Let's kill all the skin cells"

I am a recovered vampire. When I was younger, I'd I spent 4 hours outside, I would break out in hives anywhere that wasn't covered from direct sunlight.
Cocaine jaw. When you do cocaine you grind your teeth/wiggle your jaw back and forth a lot. Amongst fans, it's a tell tail sign someone is "coked out", or on cocaine. Often accompanied by profuse sweat, fast paced speech, a long rambling descriptions of business ideas that are frankly insane.
The term is ‘jaw jacking’. People on stimulants like cocaine or meth will reflexively stretch their mouth open randomly. It’s a pretty strong tell that someone is high, and it’s very visible publicly
Weed does not cause this behavior
That's a new term for me. We called it lock jaw as teens cuz that's what it felt like. So glad I got away from the pills before it ruined my adult life.
Stimulant drugs like amphetamines cause people to grind their teeth and overwork their jaws.
If they dont have anything to chew on like gum, they chew on air. Funny looking and a clear sign that someone is *tweaking*~
What other causes are there for this? I’ve caught myself doing it from time to time. I have struggled with addiction in the past, but it was mainly alcohol and weed. Now I’m curious how many people assume I do harder drugs from my appearance…
I have adhd (non medicated after years on adderall) and this is accurate. Even now off of the stims, I still bounce my legs and tap my fingers. People still think I’m geeked, though now it’s actually my adhd showing itself. Still chew gum to help take the jitters from my legs and such
I was so stoned one time that I forgot I was chewing gum then spit it out and started chewing for 2 seconds and realized I just misfired. Big league chew back in, problem solved. Not quite the same.
LSD can cause this too.

I believe the condition is called Bruxism
Oh so that's why the Pokemon is named that. How crazy

THANK YOU SO MUCH, the sodding Reddit app does not let me post pics or GIFs as comments and it makes me sad.

Figuring out why Pokemon are named the way they are is a fun game! I’ve taught my kids (and learned for myself) probably dozens of words that way.
Bruxing is also just the term for animals grinding their teeth. Source: my pet rats brux when they are happy
Damn, finally a canon meth head Pokemon.
Which pokemon?
Bruxish
Yoooooooooo lol

Fellow rat fan found!! I thought of the exact same thing reading that comment lol
Tweakers also do this when they are happy and comfortable, but it is not cute at all to be around
Don’t rats also have constantly growing teeth, so the grinding is a good thing and keeps their teeth in check?
I'm not rude. We were part of a discussion about beauty standards. I wouldn't consider you rude if you believed fat people were sexy,
I call it coke jaw
It's called gurning
So what if I grind my teeth and am not on any stimulants? Should I start taking a depressant to become more normal?
Stimulants make me stop grinding my teeth. Maybe it’s the adhd. Maybe I’m just weird. Idk.
It’s the ADHD. Stimulants in people with ADHD also work on the executive function area of the brain, which often gives them more control than they had without.
Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline.
Maybe it’s Ketamine
Maybe it's Maybelline
Botox in the masseters will help with that
Just start smoking meth. If you’re gonna do the time, you might as well do the crime ;) s/

It can be a sign of parasitic infection I've heard

Wasn’t the pacifier thing also for ecstasy? Due to wanting oral stimulation? I remember it being a trend in the rave scene.
An oral fixation from the stimulation. I bite my nails
"Short while"? This is still common today at Dutch raves and festivals
I think they meant it became a global trend. It was def a part of the US rave scene for a while but I haven't seen a club kid wearing/carrying a pacifier here for years.
It also transcended rave culture for a while to become a more mainstream trend.
They were a thing at raves in the USA for a bit too lmao
TIL I'm a methhead and not just terminally addicted to gum.
Damn and I thought this was about mewing
Not so much Adderall

I see you are a man of culture as well. Ah, swim misses the days of bluelight forums.
Swim is in agreement
How old are you? He was talking about the stimulant effect
How old are you? It’s not about the stimulant effect it’s about the Big League Chew
How old am I?!
No, how old are *I*
No, how old are *me*
Bazooka Joe is the one true flavor!
How old are you? Juicy fruit is where it’s at. It also doubles as a mouth guard after about 10 seconds.
Are you high right now?
Its good thing you dont and hope you never will Some harder types of drugs make you uncomfortably grind your teeth
I'm more confused, because I DO this when high. I assume my tolerance is low, or something, cause I take half a hit of stuff from the dispensary, and I don't remember where my neck is, if my tongue is there, and if it's day or night.
You are probably allergic to weed, happened to few friends of mine
Wait that’s actually a thing? I didn’t know someone could have an allergy to it.
I have a friend who’s allergic, it triggers an anaphylactic reaction for her. Idk how else it might present, but it’s 100% a thing.
There’s people who are allergic to *sunlight*, you can be allergic to literally anything.
those people are called vampires

Yeah I don’t grind my teeth but I’ll notice that my jaw has been clenched super hard for a while and I didn’t even notice I was doing it
Does weed make you anxious?
Yeah, even had anxiety attacks before. It's why it's rare if I touch the stuff now.

Ecstasy does this too ([gurning](https://www.vice.com/en/article/zn8n5x/why-you-gurn-when-you-take-mdma-ecstasy))
Did you ever see the website ratemygurn.com ?? I dunno if it's still active but omg - was hilarious to me when i was growing up
afaik thats why ravers wear pacifiers. its not just a fashion statement
I’m not sure. If I had to guess, it’s a joke about how meth heads are always chewing their lips
I thought it was because they'd chew their tongue in the drugged fugue state.
It's just about the general gurning, whether it's tongue or teeth or lips or jaw.
If you don't know what tweaking looks like, consider yourself very lucky. You aren't dealing with tweakers in your life!

So then we tie a sheep to a parachute, right?
Wait, that sounds like a certain orange someone. Im sure it's just a coincidence.
Meth addicts usually develop a tick that makes it look like they're chewing on something

Stimulants can have a jaw clenching effect (mdma most notably but also amphetamines and cocaine) which can make you "chew your cheeks"
this is a side affect of cocaine you seen a lot of users they will chew or grind there teeth a bit
Washing machine face is the main reason I haven't touched proper drugs in years.
That is a fantastic description.
Cocaine makes me grind my teeth. Probably what they mean
Yeah but I like chewing gum when I’m high sometimes because it helps with the munchies.
Oh yes, I like nicotine gum while high (over vaping).
Speed, crack, meth. They all make you chew your jaw regardless of whether you have anything in your mouth or not.
Other Drugs can tend to give you “Bobby Brown jaw”. Just not trees
Cocaine
Stimulant drugs like amphetamines cause people to grind their teeth and overwork their jaws. If they dont have anything to chew on like gum, they chew on air. Funny looking and a clear sign that someone is *tweaking*~

i'm not a doctor but i think TMJ or anxiety can cause this too.
Stimulants make you grind your teeth and move your jaw alot
Jaws be swingin
it was mostly e's i had a glow in the dark gum shield for a while
Then your e was probably mostly speed, not actually MDMA
Pure MDMA definitely causes gurning aka bruxism
DOES it? I thought it was only speed/coke/meth type stuff that did that. Huh.
I mean MDMA *is* a stimulant. It’s in the name…..methylinedioxy*methamphetamine*
I had no idea what it stood for. 😂 Thank you for the info.
It is the speed that is cut into all the drugs mentioned on this thread that actually creates the grind.
That’s not true lol. Pure MDMA does that on its own plenty fine thank you very much.
Where’s the joke?
“bug-eyed and wiggle-jawed”
Antipsychotics cause trade dyskinesia which also looks like this
Eating air burgers
Sort of like the old trend (is it still a thing?) of MDMA users carrying baby pacifiers.
Sort of like the old trend (is it still a thing?) of MDMA users carrying baby pacifiers.
find a meth addict and watch them try to chew their shoulder.. you’ll get it then.

anyone who reads this comment is now totally aware of their jaw movements
Well that else is pink and kinda spongey

People on stimulants constantly move their mouths. So no a drug company didn't say this (what?)
I was so stoned one time that I forgot I was chewing gum then spit it out and started chewing for 2 seconds and realized I just misfired. Big league chew back in, problem solved. Not quite the same. LSD can cause this too.
