luzer_kidd

The only way to get the stanley cup is to win 16 playoff games.

braytag

Ut first you have to MAKE IT to the playoff.  Looking at you Habs...

Possible_Nectarine30

You also have to be able to close out a 3-1 series lead. Looking at you Leafs

virgonomic33

and Bruins, and...

ApprehensiveHippo898

Someone selling the Stanley cup? I'd buy that.

Tbird1962

I thought you meant a REAL STANLEY CUP …. Not something you drink out of…. lol… I better put on my glasses ! 🤓

foxman276

I thought they were authorized replica Stanley Cups!

Tbird1962

lol….. yeah , I had no idea 😂

Squibit314

Same here.

FunTXCPA

and you're allowed to drink out of it, so saying "the one you drink out of" doesn't help.

RecommendationUsed31

And even then you never truly own it

bliskin1

Why did a stupid mug get so popular again?

typical_gamer1

Someone’s car got caught on fire and the Stanley cup was allegedly still okay with the ice still frozen in it. It was BS in my opinion because the plastic straw on the top there didn’t at least melt? GTFO. 😤

bliskin1

After reading another response a couple minutes ago, I had the same thought, was thinking oh how can you one-up that. How much does the ad pay if you burn your house down. Wrangler, housefire-proof jeans. Etc

bliskin1

That is soooo smart though, one video started a tidal wave

skurtgibzahi

I just want to add in that Stanley bought her a brend new vehicle. Honestly, it's a crazy good marketing ploy. They knew what that would do for the brand image

Melodic_Lecture1295

I’m not sure if this is a serious question. But here is a practical answer; MARKETING. Ive seen people ask this question over and over again and I’m beginning to think so, so the quicker people realize this the better. Whether you want to avoid buying something shitty or scale a viable product you need to grasp this concept. The product isn’t shitty, but mob mentality is. Avoid it as a consumer and capitalize as a seller.

bliskin1

Oh i gotcha, marketing topples nations. I just didn't know what dumb reason

WeathervaneJesus1

Car fire

reampchamp

I literally just searched for “large mug” and that’s what I got. Funny this shit is popular now.

Jumbo_Jetta

"Big dumb cup"

Busy-Tangerine6706

I believe it was a very popular TikTok influencer

KiKiPAWG

Marketing + water + health + bandwagon effect

koz152

Car fire destroyed the entire car but the Stanley survived.

withnodrawal

New gen children think they found gold in our old throwaways. And then it actually becomes gold for the company. 30 years later.

bliskin1

They said something like "hey, this old mug works good?" You dont have to explain, just another facepalm situation

sodarnclever

Lol… I read this wrong and thought your post was hockey related… I’ll see myself out…

OneLessDay517

Well, to be fair, anyone trying to sell the Stanley Cup it would obviously be fake.

Pablomendez233

I wish I could give more than one up vote 👍👍👍👍👍

DodobirdNow

They probably swapped your real one with a fake one and wanted to pass the fake back to you

WishboneHot8050

Correct answer. Hang out on the scams sub for a while and you'll see variations of this. The buyer wants their money back. Often escalating to threats of violence or calling the cops if you don't facilitate a return or give back a partial refund. The buyer gives back the item, but it's been replaced with inferior parts or it's not the same thing. Common scam with used cars and tools.

General-Example3566

Ha probably

mortyella

That was my first thought!

Alarming_Librarian71

They ended up purchasing it. I never even thought about this particular scheme, that’s so crummy. I’ll be aware of that going forward, thank you.

[deleted]

Or were hoping to knock the price down.

al49250

My only concern is why tf is a Stanley cup suddenly worth so much? I know people have gotten stupid over them, but I can't figure out why! I have a contigo I paid $10 for that will keep drinks cold/hot just as long as a Stanley.

SenorWanderer

They made a pink one and posted it on Instagram. That’s all it takes.

Competitive_Boss_312

Good brand, and yeah, don’t get it but most people are gullible!

DARR3Nv2

“Well, you already paid me. If you want the cup it’s yours. I’ll take it back but you aren’t getting your money back.”

Appropriate-Cut-1562

This is the way

rebeccaparker2000

Never let the item leave your sight, once it's sold and out of sight no return is possible, my coworker got ripped off that way. Lady wanted to buy a used louis Vuitton bag for $500 gave my friend the money and got in the car and the lady got out and said sister didn't like it so my friend gave her the money back and got the bag back. When she got home she noticed the bag seemed to look different and it was, she switched it out with a fake. My friend ended up with a $25 fake purse. Always be careful

lilmanchi

Yep!! This is super common

Alarming_Librarian71

That’s terrible 😣

hahahamii

Aren’t there specific stanley resale groups? I’d stick to those.

SenorWanderer

Wouldn’t that be where all the fakes are?

Alarming_Librarian71

I wish you could see how they like to tussle in those groups. 🥴

hahahamii

Yeah keep that mess in there lol

breadman889

are second hand water bottles a big thing now?

Alarming_Librarian71

It is a thing actually, but this isn’t secondhand. It still has the tags on it.

textonic

Wtf is a Stanley cup ?

_6siXty6_

1. An amazing sports trophy given to the NHL league champions 2. A Hipster Thermos

Acrobatic_Contact_12

People that swallow the leader and fall for these TikTok consumerism trends need to be studied. It's fascinating how the sheeple fall in line.

Lil-Aims-94

I honestly wouldn’t be the least bit upset if Tik tok got banned. People would be less distracted and possibly find actual jobs instead of trying to be influencers 🙄

Plus-Organization-16

Selling on Facebook marketplace is pretty much inviting the crazies to come out and play. You're better off just tossing what you'll sell in the trash and save yourself a lot of headaches. It's nothing but a freak show when it comes to this place

geet555

Jeeezz this is not about a sports trophy!? It's about a drinking mug / tumbler! Why not say that in the headline? Plastic w some writing on it... who cares if it legit or not? It's a hunk of plastic. Reading the entire thread and no where does it say its a drinking cup.

Alarming_Librarian71

Jesus Mary & Joseph. Why on God’s green earth would a regular, degular, schmegular person have a hockey Stanley Cup and why would I be selling it for $50?

steve210sa

ELABORATE.....Be more specific. For God's sake I know you know what the Stanley Cup is, I don't even like hockey and I know what a Stanley Cup is.

Alarming_Librarian71

I updated this post HOURS ago, elaborating that it’s about a tumbler.

steve210sa

People aren't very bright lol you gotta say Stanley Tumbler Cup

steve210sa

People aren't very bright lol you gotta say Stanley Tumbler Cup

TattooedAndSad

To be fair I’ve actually seen fakes in the stores, typically someone buys and returns the fake Not saying it’s fake but it “could” be

Alarming_Librarian71

When I bought them, they were on shelves for less than an hour lol. They just didn’t know what they were talking about, as they even admitted after they accused me.

shootingdolphins

People buy them off Temu and similar - like when I get Costa Del Mar sunglasses with the same logo and model names and stamps that look 99 percent perfect for $4.99 but the only tell tale is the hinges are different. The scheme is they swap immediately your legit Stanley for the same color that’s a fake. They right away run back to you with the fake and make a scene and you’re so flustered you’re willing to just give them their money back and take the cup back. Since a lot of people are convinced by their reasons and non-confrontational - this happens a lot. You might even google some of the things they are telling you and see that the “fake” one they handed you back is actually fake so you accept it. By the time you realize it’s been swapped they already are gone. If it works they got a free Stanley minus the $10 they paid for the fake. Then they resell the legit one for $50. So that 5 times every few days and you make some cash.

TattooedAndSad

Yeah it happens all over the place My comment was downvoted like 40 times at one point lmfao, people just don’t realize what goes on sometimes

General-Example3566

Never had this happen to me on marketplace but it is odd. People are fucking nuts these days. Even if you’re a male, I would always bring someone with you to the sale meet ups. You just never know

Alarming_Librarian71

I’m a female and I really didn’t appreciate how this lady had her big burly husband try to handle this. 😕 they were nice, but still.

General-Example3566

Ok sorry about that wasn’t sure if you were make or female. In that case, bring someone with you! lol and yeah they sound like an asshole couple, possibly trying to scam you and probably others as well

Trash_Panda_1983

Are these all the rage for the nail tapping Botox masses?

gbpc

Stanley cups have lead inside, sell it off and never look back

Alarming_Librarian71

The lead is not accessible unless the cup is severely damaged.

Retoru45

Still shouldn't ever be used in something that will contain food or drink.

RiceARolla

Leafs fans don’t get Stanley cups -leafs fan

Jazzlike-Cat9012

I was accused of selling a fake Tiffany & Co bracelet, because it was tarnishing (I had tried to clean it to the best of my ability, but it required more detailed work between the beads). They suggested that a real Tiffany bracelet would not tarnish. It was real sterling silver, which tarnishes 🤷🏻‍♀️ I still have a Tiffany necklace which is horrible for tarnishing as well.

pezdal

You said it yourself. They don't know you. So why should you care what they think of you? They are not basing their opinion on true facts. Ignore such opinions. You know you acted honourably. The transaction was approximately the value of an Uber Eats dinner. Forget about it and move on. They have.

Bohemian_Feline_

I can’t even remember what the issue was. I’m stuck at the part where you took a video of yourself walking in to Dick’s to buy a cup and then post about it on social media. You definitely need a hobby. Wow.

Alarming_Librarian71

You don’t know what stressors I have going on in my life. If a cup makes me happy for a few moments, let me have that. The video was about 10 seconds long lol, I didn’t make a whole 20 minute video about it, and if I did, so what?

Bohemian_Feline_

Weirdo

SuitableJelly5149

I’d give them a break. There are so many scammers out there these days and these people have no clue who you are or know anything about your character. Keep the receipts or take photos in store when you buy them, as you did with this one. But it’s not their fault to question a logo they weren’t familiar with

Alarming_Librarian71

They didn’t question, they flat out accused lol.

SuitableJelly5149

No you’re right. How rude they were perhaps didn’t come across in context. You do you

Rainb0wApe112

Throw it away I guess. Thing is lead based

Savings-Alarm-8240

TIL people buy used cups other people drank out of for over $100. These used to be called a thermos? lol scalpers be scalping everything nowadays.

Vakua_Lupo

I actually thought we were discussing some sort of Sports Trophy😂

geet555

Isn't that what this thread is about? I'm really confused.

knottynanny63

They’re all the rage for more than just the nail tapping botox masses. It’s trilled down to their children. I’m 61 & I have an adopted 10 yo girl. We live in a pretty nice neighborhood where a lot of younger couples live. My daughter came home a few months ago insisting I buy her a Stanley. She pleaded with me that she was getting made fun of because she was the only kid in class that didn’t have one! Its ridiculous!

radioactivepiloted

Physics can only get you so far. Beyond that... It's just marketing. Your 5 dollar (okay maybe a little more) cup is just as good.

Left-Ad-3767

Why is buying something preowned, for a few bucks more than retail, a steal of a deal?

Alarming_Librarian71

It’s brand new. I should have said that. It still has tags on it. This cup sells on 3rd party sites for $80-90+. So yes, it is a steal. Also, it’s no longer available in stores and hasn’t been for weeks, nor is it going to be restocked. I sold it for about $2-3 more than I paid for it.

24-Sevyn

Never let yourself be flagged down. You don’t know what they have in mind. They might have switched it out in their vehicle with an actual fake that they had.

RandoJayCommando

What is the hype over these cups? And why spend $50 on one? I don’t understand. Someone explain this to me. Are they really good at keeping drinks hot and cold? Better than other insulated cups?

Gaddis92

I'm not saying there better or worse, but have other videos like this regarding other brands appeared? https://youtu.be/3RUREy-EAmQ?si=SZxbaR-NR6w5gSlR The proof is in the pudding 🤷‍♂️

RandoJayCommando

Well. The cup is made of metal, and there doesn’t appear to be fire damage in the cab of the car. It appears to be smoke damage. Had there been actual fire damage, the cup would have melted. Great marketing though.

Gaddis92

Either way the heat inside that cab would have been hot enough to melt a regular cup or even the ice. The fact that the metal didn't reach a high temp to melt the ice is astonishing imo

RandoJayCommando

I’ll disagree with you. The plastic cup holder it’s in didn’t even melt. And plastic melts a lot sooner and quicker than metal.

RandoJayCommando

And I’ll also say, that the ice in the cup would have helped the cup last longer in a fire.

Bummergod335

Let's bring back the big green Stanley thermos!

xcjb07x

Why would it fucking matter if it’s fake? It’s a water bottle.

Lower-Ad7646

Seriously what is up with the that cup. It’s a water cup. Why do people go crazy about it

Gaddis92

Stanley has always been a great company for stuff like thermos' and rugged construction worthy gear/utensils. Ever since this video hit the news, it was all the publicity Stanley never needed. https://youtu.be/3RUREy-EAmQ?si=SZxbaR-NR6w5gSlR I mean, what better advertisement? If I remember correctly, they bought her a new car. Still cheaper than any advertising they would have / could have done.

Retoru45

It's just basic bitches being basic bitches, pay it no mind. Stanley already peaked, they'll be on to the next dumb thing soon.

Throwaway076589

A few people have mentioned they thought that this couple switched the mug with a fake, so I’ll not comment on that. I, too, have had numerous interactions with people off of fb marketplace that I still think about because it was so negative/odd/off-putting/whatever. Unfortunately these types of interactions will probably continue. The only advice I can give you is to really listen to your gut and get good and standing your ground. These people look for any and all excuses or opportunities to take advantage of you, so you need to protect yourself as much as you can.

koz152

If the cash was in your hand and the cup was in theirs keep driving next time.

steve210sa

I'll stick with my Yeti......

Wrong_Ad_6022

You are selling big cups in a parking lot....

Hoosier_Daddy68

I'd say it was fake, too. The real one is in Vegas right now.

Wise_hollyman

The comments are simply hillarious 🤣

festivesnowrunner

Jesus lol. Still don't understand the obsession with these dumb cups.

fanatic26

the fact that anyone would pay that much for a silly ass cup is sad all the way around

Alarming_Librarian71

Ok.

Chris71Mach1

This has left me laughing at EVERYBODY. I'm laughing at the poor dopes who keep buying Starbuck's overpriced and shitty coffee. I'm laughing at the poor dopes who keep buying Starbuck's overpriced and shitty cups from the store. I'm laughing REALLY HARD at the poor dopes who keep buying Starbuck's overpriced and shitty cups SECOND HAND! The Shitty Seattle Coffee Corporation has become a beacon of light for those wanting to learn how to manipulate the masses into giving up so much of their hard earned money. I can't wait for the "Pumpkin Spice Stanley Cup" to hit the market this October, for double the price, and fly off shelves so fast nobody can keep up with it.

Alarming_Librarian71

Who said anything about Starbucks?

Chris71Mach1

Have you forgotten what the Stanley Cup (not the hockey related one) is and where it came from?

Cautious_Buffalo6563

Walk away then. Damn. People are crazy over these things.

venmome10cents

Even if you bought it from an authorized retailer, it could be fake. Scammers can buy counterfeits online and then purchase a real one from a store. They transfer any stickers/tags, and "return" the counterfeit one to the store for a refund. This results in: (a) the scammer possesses the genuine item for the price of the knock-off (b) the store likely puts the counterfeit back on shelf for sale to the next unsuspecting customer. Not saying that this has to be what happened, but it is narrow-minded to just assume that your cup was 100% legit because you purchased it in-store, just like it is narrow-minded for the customer to assume that it was 100% fake based on the paint.

Alarming_Librarian71

This cup was in the store for less than an hour before it sold out. Super limited edition. I don’t think anyone could have made a dupe before the cup was available and make this swap in store in the very short time it was available lol. I’m not saying people don’t scam like this, but it logistically makes no sense in this scenario. The couple even admitted more than once they don’t know anything about them in the first place. They assumed it was fake without even asking for any clarity.

venmome10cents

Yeah, I'm wasn't saying my scenario was what happened, just something to consider even when the item was purchased from a reputable source. I think it's more common with limited-release shoes that have a mature and sophisticated black market (sometimes the counterfeits can only be spotted because they are actually better quality materials!). A store employee can show up to work every day in new counterfeit Air Jordans and walk out with real ones.

tofer85

*Caveat Emptor*

LankyPaleontologist2

If it was such a steal for them why wouldn’t u just gladly accept the cup back ? Versus the ensuing in a back and forth about how it’s not

NicholasLit

They are all found to have IQ damaging lead anyway

ThirdSunRising

If they honestly believed it was fake they wouldn’t have bought it. They were trying to get your price down.

CardiologistOk6547

No wonder they thought it was fake.

CardiologistOk6547

Right, they don't know you. And you don't know knockoff cups. So if you make an honest mistake, for some reason, you assume the other person must be wrong. You can declare that you don't buy fake stuff, but nobody knows that for certain. Not even you since you won't even admit to the possibility that you could have made a mistake. Just a simple mistake, nobody is accusing you of fraud or dealing in known counterfeit. Just a mistake that you refuse to see as a possibility.

Super_Ad9995

>This is regarding a Stanley cup/tumbler that you drink out of, NOT the hockey trophy. Who the fuck is dumb enough to think you were talking about a trophy.

Alarming_Librarian71

Several people in the comments. I’m not even kidding. Enough people complained that I felt compelled enough to update the post.

41414141414

You should just do a lead test so they can see it’s positive and definitely a real stanley

properweeb420innit

Why you trying to sell your tennis trophy are you Serena Williams or some shit

Alarming_Librarian71

Yes.

HighUrbanNana

Hockey?
