a lot of people forget how groundbreaking X was - ps2 exclusive, first of its kind on blue ray discs for insane graphics + FULL VOICE ACTING
even the combat felt sooo fast because you could swap characters in and out
FFX may not have the best graphics compared to newer games, but the *presentation* is just perfect.
Shots like Tidus watching Yuna's Sending, the party's weapons in a pile, Anima's summoning, Yuna falling and summoning Valefor...
Although FFX-2's story was a bit controversial, I really adore some of the cut scenes such as the Farplane and the Thunderplains and how they were made more magical than they already were from FFX.
Act 2 of Final Fantasy 6 (The World of Ruin) is one of the best sections of any game in the series.
Final Fantasy 7 has the best opening Act of the series (Midgard)
Final Fantasy Tactics is an absolute masterpiece.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advances is a great game, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
Final Fantasy Record Keeper was peak, and it's a travesty that global is shut down.
The Dissidia Final Fantasy Universe rules.
It's awesome that Final Fantasy 5 gets the recognition it rightfully deserves.
FFTA is a blast.
I'm always surprised how many people seeth at the law system as their main complain - it's super easy to manipulate if you just pay a minor amount of attention to it and can count on your fingers lol
Yeah, the inevitable reality of live service gacha caught up to it.
But man, I still kinda miss it. I would not go back to it in its current state (I could, JP's still going), but I miss Tyro and I miss that insanely complex and challenging ATB implementation. Not to mention seeing each new foe and character rendered back into the SNES era.
Yo, I'm not the same person, but my boy did the voice of Wedge, dawg! Me and him use to kick it pretty hard back in the day, for real. We'd sit up and talk about zombies and movies and video games for days, bro! We kinda grew apart as my career in science took off, but we're still cool!
Mine:
* Final Fantasy VII deserves the praise. It actually is that good. Is it oversaturated in the general FF series? Sure, arguably. But it's some of Square(soft)'s best work.
* The FF7 Remake trilogy is fun and made with lots of genuine love for the original. (But no, it's not as good, and not even close.)
* Cloud Strife is one of the series' best heroes and Aeris / Aerith is one of the best heroines.
* FFXIV may not be a traditional entry, as an MMO, but yes, it is that good. (At least, if you're willing to dedicate 100-200 hours getting through the intro stuff before the story gets incredible.)
* All the mainline Final Fantasy games are good. Each one is truly worth playing - yes, even FF2 and FF3 (the latter of which is, imo, the best of the old Famicon titles.)
* FFX has the most concise storytelling and world-building. Not quite flawless as a work, but it's really solid, and tied with music and ambiance, it's no wonder it has the popularity it does even 20 years after its release.
* Clive has a great chest
That it seems like ff8 is getting its flowers after all these years. Always loved that game and it seems like the general consensus is starting to change. Years ago it was ragged on but now it’s finally getting recognition I think
I think fans of the game are getting more vocal. There was a time when the haters were desperate to control the narrative, and fans of the game fell silent to avoid the toxicity! But I agree that the narrative has really shifted because I've seen more praise than I've seen in a very long time!
This was mine as well. I liked 8 when it came out, but it wasn't until years later that I realized I was playing it completely wrong and after I replayed it I liked it even more. The game design was really counterintuitive when compared to all the previous titles, and if you missed certain things (getting the Card ability as quickly as possible and using it constantly, using draw/junction instead of leveling up to get your stats up, using the lamp to fight Diablos as soon as the game lets you, and the mechanics of how Boost works were all things I had no clue about when I played it at release) you were putting yourself at a huge disadvantage at end game. But the story was great, if a bit convoluted at the end, the card game was one of the best minigames of the series, and it had some of the best and most memorable cutscenes of the entire series. The assassination attempt and the part where Squall finds Rinoa in space were both phenomenal. Great music, too, especially when "Eyes on You" was so integral to the entire plot of the game. Probably the most underrated (or at least controversial) title in the series.
I used to think it wasn't as good as what people made it out to be! And to a lesser degree, I still think it's true, but all things considered, it still deserves its status
It has the best music of any game series out there.
Theres great music in other games but no series has both the consistency and high quality sound that Final Fantasy puts out. Mitsuda, Shimomura, Nobuo, and Soken are all legends, and there's probably others I don't know as well.
Those old mobile/Steam versions of FFI-VI were truly awful. UI that looks like it was designed for iOS 6 but left unfinished, no personality in presentation, and sprite art in so many varying styles/resolutions that it looks like it was worked on by 5 different teams not communicating with each other.
FF6's story was innovative and interesting for the time. Villains turning to heroes, the large cast as a way to show alliances forming, a secondary villain turning into the main villain motivated out of pure hatred and insanity, and the world of ruin, such great ideas.
Yep, it's going to be a very controversial popular opinion. I've already had at least one downvote.
I think 6 might be more popular among FF fans, but 7 is more popular among the general public. People who aren't particularly into FF are more likely to have played 7. It's the game that took FF into the mainstream. Especially when you consider 6 didn't come out until after 7 in a significant chunk of the world.
Final Fantasy 14 is really good and people who don't play it are missing out and anyone who dismisses it as "just" an MMO and "doesn't count" is ignorant and anyone who says they won't play it because they "don't like MMOs" are silly and clearly haven't looked into the game at all and anyone who keeps comparing it to WoW is dumb because not every MMO is the same and anyone who says they don't wanna invest hundreds of hours don't realize each expansion is its own self contained story with its own final boss, ending, conclusion to said story, and credits. YES there's an overarching story but in the same way any old regular ass TV show or book trilogy or movie would, but still hold up as stanaholes. Basically you're missing out on an amazing single player experience due to your narrow ideas on what an MMO is, and have used the "MMO label" as a stain on it. You can literally play up to Stormblood for free, FREE.
I'll reply with the popular opinion among people who don't like MMOs:
It is absolutely an MMO in its gameplay, game design, and pacing, the latter of which is the most brutal for people who don't enjoy MMO-style games. Someone else in this post said 14 has a great story as long as you're willing to put in 100-200 hours to get past the intro stuff. That is INSANE to suggest to someone who doesn't really enjoy that style of game to just push through for that long. You could beat 4-8 different single player FF games at a comfortable pace in the same amount of time and enjoy it the whole time.
The story may become great later on, but it's just not appealing with that big of a barrier to entry, especially if you don't enjoy MMO-style design and combat.
FF14's community isn't all sunshine and rainbows that so many people seem to laud it as. In fact, it's barely different from any other MMO.
Maybe it's not "popular" but it's a very common opinion that tends to get you screamed at. Kinda immediately proving said opinion.
There are some weirdos and cringy people in it, see that whole billbord thing, but everyone in it is SO patient and helpful. Never witnessed that in any other MMO.
Everyone's got different personal experiences, but not going to get into a slinging match of what MMO community is better. They all suck to varying degrees. It's like comparing FPS or MOBAs to one another.
Having been a fan of the franchise for over 25 years, and having had this debate with many different people in that time, I can unequivocally say that the BEST Final Fantasy game...
... is the one YOU enjoyed the most.
So many well-written female characters! Yuna, Tifa, Aerith, Terra, Lightning… I don’t know many other series with such a fantastic canon of incredibly memorable women! The FF series sets the bar on how to write good, complex women.
(Exception: the villainesses. I wish Squeenix wouldn’t lean so hard into the “Beautiful Evil Slutty Enchantress” trope when writing women baddies. See: Yunalesca, Ultimecia, Leblanc)
Dunno if it's "popular" because I think popular opinion might have swung the other way at this point, but I do think VII is probably the best mainline FF. (Even if it's not necessarily my favorite.)
FFXI is my fav. Making the journey to get to and through the Valkurm Dunes will make or break you and will truly experience the definition of teamwork fused with Final Fantasy. I made that journey as White Mage.
Final Fantasy VIII is a great game
Most people calling it underrated, they are dreaming, the game sold really well. I do say that it's underappreciated, but still, most would agree it is in fact, a great game.
Heard that XIV has best original score of the series, and I agree.
(it helps that it has hundreds of songs composed/arranged for it, and it sometimes borrows themes from past games so you get the greatest hits in one game).
These games are fun.
Sometimes it doesnt feel like thats a popular opinion anymore :/
I played almost all them just so I can @#$%post them.
This franchise has amazing soundtracks!
Torgal is a good boy.
Nobuo Uematsu is a legend for the work he did on the FF games
Graphics generally look great. FF13 and 16 stand out to me
13 and 16 and indeed gorgeous games! SE art directors are top tier in general.
These games are really cool, fun and good.
None of them have been the final final fantasy and I’m okay with that
Technically; they *all* have been the final fantasy at some point in time
🤯
“That’s it!! I have come up with a new recipe” is the most heard line in the series 😂
Activating combat mode
Barret is husband material
Barret is fuck buddy material
Nah mans got mad anger issues.
I can fix him
I can make him worse.
Do that and then I’ll scoop up and try to save him thanks
Guaranteed he fucks hard
Squall was indeed the best looking guy

This has mad “BUCKLE UP, BUCKAROO” energy
This has that Tom Brady courtroom sketch artist energy.
"Whatever..." *Squall*
The Balamb Garden is one of the most creative and visually appealing concepts and areas in the series.
Coupled with gorgeous Balamb garden song, it's a sensory delight
Everyone loves moogles
Idk maybe not Estinien, i believe hes threatened to rip off a pom or two.
FFX has the best looking cutscenes in the series. The opening one and going to Luca are so beautiful.
the sending in Kilika is SO good. Yuna's wedding? phenomenal. I know I'm biased, but X's cutscenes can't be beat
This blew me away on the remastered version on PS5. Had never played FFX and the sending was better than most cutscenes on modern games.
Yeah they're all great.
Just dont look at her feet
a lot of people forget how groundbreaking X was - ps2 exclusive, first of its kind on blue ray discs for insane graphics + FULL VOICE ACTING even the combat felt sooo fast because you could swap characters in and out
FFX may not have the best graphics compared to newer games, but the *presentation* is just perfect.
And it released only a year after 9’s release. They made insane progress in game development in such a short time
Act 2 of Final Fantasy 6 (The World of Ruin) is one of the best sections of any game in the series. Final Fantasy 7 has the best opening Act of the series (Midgard) Final Fantasy Tactics is an absolute masterpiece.
Based man on Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
I have a cousin who isn’t much of a gamer and only casually was as a kid. But she LOVES Tactics Advance. Probably still replays it every couple years.
I dropped Record Keeper after powercreep became too much for me but man, you could tell the game had love put into it
Yeah, the inevitable reality of live service gacha caught up to it. But man, I still kinda miss it. I would not go back to it in its current state (I could, JP's still going), but I miss Tyro and I miss that insanely complex and challenging ATB implementation. Not to mention seeing each new foe and character rendered back into the SNES era.
Yeah, the passion the devs had for the Final Fantasy series as a whole shone through so much.
Man first half was bang on for me but you lost me on advance
Why were you pretending FFTA wasn't a great game?
Straight guy gay for Dion
FF12 has one of the most impressive translations from Japanese to English.
Kupo
“This guy KUPOS!”
Rinoa's eyebrows are on fleek.
Terra in FF6 is iconic
The voice actors in FFVII Remake/Rebirth are incredible
A fellow VA friend of mine was cast as a secondary character in Rebirth! Sorry for the random factoid, I just feel so proud of him
That's awesome, do you feel comfortable saying which character?
Yo, I'm not the same person, but my boy did the voice of Wedge, dawg! Me and him use to kick it pretty hard back in the day, for real. We'd sit up and talk about zombies and movies and video games for days, bro! We kinda grew apart as my career in science took off, but we're still cool!

Cid doesn’t have an unlikeable version.
Balthier's dad was close, but still he is too charismatic to dislike entirely.
there has never been a bad Gilgamesh appearance and never been a bad rendition of Battle/ Clash on the Big Bridge
Best soundtracks in all of video games.
Triple Triad is one of the best mini games in all Final Fantasy
final fantasy 8 is a bit uneven but still a very enjoyable and worthwhile game
They won the lottery getting Uematsu to score the series for so long, then they won it again with Soken.
Tifa is the best girl.
I profoundly agree about the World of Ruin.
X has a really good story
Listen to my story.
This..may be our last chance.
Stay away from the summoner!
Choose a random Final Fantasy game. Any one. The music will be phenomenal and full of bangers.
Vivi is the best character.
Final Fantasy is awesome. Been playing these games for almost forty years now... So many good times.
Final Fantasy is better than Final Fantasy
But is it as good as Final fantasy? Final fantasy is overrated, but Final fantasy is the goat
Well, I think Final Fantasy is a good game but not a good Final Fantasy game.
WHAT! are you crazy? Final Fantasy is the best Final Fantasy....... It's Final Fantasy for me that just didn't feel like a Final Fantasy
Ugh! I bet your favorite character is character…
What's wrong with character? You're just trolling now!
Alright! Let's leave our differences away and accept that every Final Fantasy is the right Final Fantasy for the right fan. Deal?
That's actually based af ......Final Fantasy for the win
Regardless of gameplay, story, character development… music is always a 100/10
Nobuo Uematsu carried the series, for sure.
Final Fantasy soundtracks are top-tier musical compositions, video game related or otherwise.
The PS1 was the golden age of Final Fantasy
Counterpoint: SNES
FF7 is a great game and deserves most of the praise it gets
I used to think it wasn't as good as what people made it out to be! And to a lesser degree, I still think it's true, but all things considered, it still deserves its status
FF6 is peak FF
It has the best music of any game series out there. Theres great music in other games but no series has both the consistency and high quality sound that Final Fantasy puts out. Mitsuda, Shimomura, Nobuo, and Soken are all legends, and there's probably others I don't know as well.
Final Fantasy XVI is a 9 out of 10 game
Hell yeah.
They’re all good and deserving of their praise. Final Fantasy as a series continues to grow and deliver. I love this franchise so much.
FF games consistently have some of the best music in gaming. Every. Single. Time.
*sigh* Tactics is the best game. I know it’s the golden child but damn it’s just that good.
The last one to be released ruined the series and isn’t a real final fantasy. I’ve been in the fandom since 2/4 and this was being said even then
Final Fantasy IX’s universe really is magical in how well done it is.
FF7 OG is amazing. Emet Selch is one of the best villains
We need to go back to original turn base combat style. I like the new battle systems, BUT turn base would be nostalgic.
Tactics is peak.
Those old mobile/Steam versions of FFI-VI were truly awful. UI that looks like it was designed for iOS 6 but left unfinished, no personality in presentation, and sprite art in so many varying styles/resolutions that it looks like it was worked on by 5 different teams not communicating with each other.
WHET DLRO QSSI ERAU
Best soundtracks in all of video games.
That game you like is good.
WRONG
Dissida NT Final Fantasy killed the subfranchise by being an esports multiplayer 3v3 fighter instead of a single-player arena fighter rpg.
FACTS.
Making us dodge 200 lightning bolts is sadistic and whoever made that decision is probably a serial killer
Chocobo theme always slaps and is always nostalgic
FFIX is the best game ever FFXIII is not a bad game. Corridor gameplay is not a bad thing for a story driven plot.
The gunblade is the coolest weapon ever.
Minwu
Vivi is friend shaped.
That FF7 was the most important FF, but not the best.
Some of the best soundtracks in gaming are here.
FF6's story was innovative and interesting for the time. Villains turning to heroes, the large cast as a way to show alliances forming, a secondary villain turning into the main villain motivated out of pure hatred and insanity, and the world of ruin, such great ideas.
These games can be incredibly goofy and I’m perfectly okay with that
FF9 Is the best FF and it’s not even close
Was going to reply something to this effect myself. IX is peak FF for me. Not perfect but the least flaws.
FF7 is the best one.
FF6 sir. And thus the age old argument will keep going, and make this comment false.
BAAW GOD HERE COMES CHRONO TRIGGER WITH THE STEEL CHAIR
This the Revolver vs. Sgt. Pepper argument of gaming.
FFVI and Tactics was peak final fantasy
Uematsu is godly
I'll reply with the popular opinion among people who don't like MMOs: It is absolutely an MMO in its gameplay, game design, and pacing, the latter of which is the most brutal for people who don't enjoy MMO-style games.
As someone playing ffxiv right this second, I agree lol
Final Fantasy 7 is good
I'll probably be dead before I see a FF9 remake
Music is phenomenal
That they’re a core memory to a lot of peoples character and morality
Having been a fan of the franchise for over 25 years, and having had this debate with many different people in that time, I can unequivocally say that the BEST Final Fantasy game... ... is the one YOU enjoyed the most.
The Junction system is bad.
Yotsuyu says hello as an exception to the exception.
Bahamut is always gay in every FF
ALL THREE FINAL FANTASY 13S ARE ACTUALLY GOOD
Dunno if it's "popular" because I think popular opinion might have swung the other way at this point, but I do think VII is probably the best mainline FF. (Even if it's not necessarily my favorite.)
ff7 is the best
FF8 fans are the most whiny
Tifa is Hot Aerith is Pretty Yuffie is Cute
That people like to fight over anything and everything this series has gone through.
Triple triad is the best mini game
NT ruined the dissidia series.
All of the mainline games have fantastic soundtracks including 12.
The job system is fun.
Lightning is SMOKING HOTT
10 is THE GREATEST
Tifa is my favourite waifu
Final Fantasy XI would be on more top 10 lists if fans gave it a try.
FFXI is my fav. Making the journey to get to and through the Valkurm Dunes will make or break you and will truly experience the definition of teamwork fused with Final Fantasy. I made that journey as White Mage.
Cloud is the best protagonist. It may not be popular in this sub, but the casuals agree with me.
That Shadow is worth saving
13 has the best soundtrack… oh wait you said popular
VI is the best
we love VIVI
Tifa is hot
Square was better when it was squaresoft
10 was, is, and always WILL BE a masterpiece.
The drip in all games is crazy
Cloud’s buster sword goes hard
There are interesting jobs/classes in the game
Gladiolus is hot and could fuck the daylights outta me.
14 has the best story for an MMO, and the best story in the series.
Final Fantasy 7 is kind of good
Always worth my money because they keep me busy for many many hours.
I love 6 and 7.
nobuo umaetsu truly is one of the greatest artists of our lifetime.
Final Fantasy VIII is a great game Most people calling it underrated, they are dreaming, the game sold really well. I do say that it's underappreciated, but still, most would agree it is in fact, a great game.
FF is fun to play.
FF7 is a masterpiece and Sephirot is the GOAT
Ff12 is godly
Tactics is an actually difficult game for new players
They are all great in their own way and its OK to not like one of them.
7 good
Im here to kill chaos
Og Reno -> Remake Reno = best ff glow up
Heard that XIV has best original score of the series, and I agree. (it helps that it has hundreds of songs composed/arranged for it, and it sometimes borrows themes from past games so you get the greatest hits in one game).
That Final Fantasy peaked at FFIX
