Cool thing about bowfin - a shallow river backwater near me, we learned that they love the sound of commotion in the water, and will come to investigate. So what we used to do, catch a few bluegills, chop em up. Throw out a few chunks, and bait our hooks with a chunk each. Then take a net or paddle and slap the water, make a bunch of noise. On calm evenings, you would see the bowfin coming from 100s of feet away like submarines, just under the water.
I had that with smallmouth once. Red eyes, red shades, wearing green and brown. Lol gotta color coordinate your catches. *You must become the fish* đ
Great description.
I don't have Bowfin in my area (too cold in winter, all rivers freeze). But I have watched videos of people catching them and I know by its size that would have been a fun fight.
Congrats on the nice sized Bowfin and tge fun fight you had with it.
Funny story since you're from LA.
My dad was asked by someone he worked with about bowfin. He didn't know what he was talking about because that's not what he grew up calling them.
Same with what we call sheephead up here. Regional words are fun.
I love a good spincast. What are you working with there? Itâs always funny to me that people are snobs about them but theyâre very clever little machines.
I caught my first ever bowfin last week. The way it hit I thought it was a pike. Got it in shore and realized it was a dogfish. Remind me a bit of long bullheads - decent fight
Theyâre very weird. The flesh is very soft andâŠfluffy? You gotta butcher and cook it within a day. Its flavor isnât as notable as its texture.
Bowfin/choupique (sp?) look prehistoric to me. So fricken cool.
Damn son, that thing's a beast! Nice catch - I hear they fight like hell, too. Like an angry cinderblock, rofl.
Cool looking spot, too. That thing was prolly down one of those holes hiding, waiting for your bait to go by.
Thats a cool bowfin! His fins match your hat.

It's why big topwaters and noisy lures work so well for them. Pike too.
That is actually really useful information
Twins for sure lol
Damn I saw the picture and I was going to say the same thing. Sweet catch bud. Best of luck to you.

Bowfin
What does it taste like? This fish is a continent away from me so never tasted it
They usually get thrown back, not high up on the eating list.
