The lack of good games. Bandai just wants to make gacha trash instead of good gameplay. Exploring followups to AU stories in game form would be amazing. Imagine the calamity wars retold with you getting to customize your Gundam with mobile armors you defeat.

granpappynurgle

I want an 08th MS Team squad-based shooter so bad.

Duke582

You mean like Zeonic Front?

granpappynurgle

I would settle for a Zeonic Front remaster, but I would like something more modern. ZF was pretty clunky.

PockyPunk

This, I want a full up to date remaster of Zeonic Front. That game was so much fun and challenging. But it’s sadly very outdated in many aspects and needs a remaster.

DreamcastJunkie

That's basically Rise From The Ashes on the Dreamcast.

granpappynurgle

If so, I'll take a remaster of that as well!

ZX0megaXZ

Peche's story in UC engage looked interesting but the gameplay looked so boring that I couldn't even be bothered to install it. Than their was Gundam Battle Operations 2 which was kinda of fun but the server issues left the game with no population to play with on PC.

AlphaLeonidas

Honestly, just give me Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 5, and make the 5 a Gundam V-fin

AVestedInterest

I would also take a *Gundam Breaker 4* No, *New Gundam Breaker* doesn't count

SolDarkHunter

Whoever came up with New Gundam Breaker should be fired. ...out of a cannon... into the Sun. They are clearly too stupid to ever be permitted to work in the games industry again.

Holiday_Support_4873

What are you talking about? There was no a new gundam breaker game after GB3. I repeat. THERE.WAS.NO.A.NEW.GUNDAM.BREAKER.GAME.AFTER.GB3

AVestedInterest

The friggin' DAY after I said this *GB4* gets announced I AM THE GUNDAM PROPHET

TemporaryLegendary

Damn bro don't remind me.. the only Gundam game I like to play is SD cross generation. And that's just because I love to look at the suits in action.. I pray we someday get a Gundam game made by a studio that knows what the fans want

runningblack

I would kill for Fromsoft to give Gundam the armored core treatment

Chakramer

Well they did back in the day with a Unicorn game

runningblack

Honestly completely unfamiliar with it Did it release stateside? What system(s)?

Chakramer

No it did not, I think it was on PS2 or 3Japan only

Klutzy-Personality-3

ps3 jp only

DaemonBlackfyre515

Someone here the other day said the vanilla game is short as fuck and the majority of it is DLC.

ehmarkymark

The thing is, the way Bandai handles the Gundam IP especially in recent years seems to suggest either they are not confident in it's appeal, not understanding the global gaming market, or they're just getting cooked in revenue funds and can't allocate more resources for good Gundam games. They've probably realised Gacha is a cheap market to enter and is the most stable in terms of profit for them. We just need what Fromsoft did with AC6 with Gundam, like their Unicorn game. Just imagine a game with a main campaign then DLC that can be themed after individual UC/AU stories with new suits, customisation options, lore etc. Throw in some rudimentary pvp ala AC6/ExVs and you'll have something that should have wider appeal, especially if you throw it on all platforms. That said, this would need a really hefty budget in order to not suck.

blazezakuwarrior

I want Gundam Breaker Mobile back man

Guitarfoxx

Gundam vs is a great series but they refuse to put it on PC and we seldom get a release outside of Japan. The last I think of is on ps4...

Rezangyal

All Bamco need do is release a Gundam skins/SFX pack for AC6.  Literal money printer.

AceSkyFighter

All I want is a new single player game similar to Battlefield Record 0081. I loved that game.

nero40

This. There has been good Gundam games over the years but I wouldn’t say they are accessible to most people nowadays. Likewise, the accessible ones today, are mobile games that’s not really in-depth and more just like fan service.

primalmaximus

A gacha where you rolled for parts that you used to make your own custom mobile suit would be fun.

Chakramer

Yeah but without paid gacha preferably

SirBlakesalot

Well, Gundam Breaker 4 just got announced today, so I guess they heard you talking shit. Edit: Well, as long as it's not like New Breaker was.

Chakramer

Really hoping it's not a gacha game or have everything good shoved into DLC Just looking at the first trailer, not super hyped over the graphics but the gameplay seems a lot better than recent games

Nitrothunda21

They really need to revive the idea of Operation Troy. Just make an fps large scale battle game like battlefield or star wars battlefront but with Gundam. That will immeadiately sell in the west

Aggravating-Lead29

in UC Gundam stealing or hijacking mobile suits, I just find it funny how often it happens and how easy does it look. I'm not only talking about the *enemy* stealing a suit but how can the pilot / the same crew can just get inside the mobile suit and immediately launch when they feel like it (e.g. Sayla, Katz, Fa, etc) isn't there a protocol in place to even enter the cockpit

GarmBlack

At least on the original White Base that kinda makes sense. Most of the crew was idiot kids and recruits who were just doing their best, and even in the current day military it's all about base control. F22's don't have a set of keys or complicated lock. So you mix lax security by untrained people, a confined ship which doesn't allow for things like a barbed wire fence and then several thousand yards before the planes in which time you can be spotted, and an unlocked Gundam and... there ya go.

TemporaryLegendary

Yeah I found that weird as well. Especially in Seed. Where Kira has put this omega lock on the strike. But a few days later Sai gets in the thing and tries to pilot it with no issue other than sucking ass lol

arcstarlazer

I don't remember there being an omega lock? On the strike all I remember is mu saying kira configured the strike to himself to the point that the calibrations will be a headache for mu or that its almost uncontrollable if its someone other than kira which makes sense why sai sucked ass in it

DNukem170

Mu had Kira install a lock when they got to Artemis. Presumably, Kira removed the lock after the base exploded.

mutewave

UC Gundam is like 1970s-80s NY. Leave your Gundam parked and the next moment a bunch of freaks are stripping it down to resell the parts or an idiot kid is joyriding it

AntaBaka138

These days they keep trying to steal the cats off my Zaku, hate when that happens.

Loretype

NGL, that's the reason I laughed out loud when watching Gundam X for the first time - Realising someone finally thought it was a good idea to have some kind of MS security mechanism...

nanaholic

It's actually a really bad idea to have the Gundam X being locked to a fragile control stick - it only appeals to the false and wrong "common sense" of average people who has no military experience because they think "MS = my car in the drive way, I lock my car so MS should be locked". But in real life military equipments aren't lock at all.

Loretype

Oh, I'm aware that real military vehicles aren't locked for the most part. But the GX is closer to a strategic nuclear weapon so the double security mechanism of the G-Con + DOME registration still makes sense in context. I get the Gundam MKII theft in Zeta for the same reason - GP-02 is the really egregious one.

barbatos087

Cosmic era looking nervous in the corner

EatTacosGetMoney

This is the basis for the entire plot of stardust memory isn't it?

barbatos087

Stardust memory looking nervous in the corner

TrueTinFox

The *majority* of gundams we see on screen are stolen or are based on stolen designs, lmao.

nanaholic

That's actually by far the most realistic part. In a proper real war scenario, your pilot can be injured/killed by stray fire and you'll be left with your best weapon pilotless and unusable if the weapon is locked to a specific pilot. The flip side is the pilot is fine but his custom, bio-security locked machine is destroyed, and he can't use any of the other machines because every one of those are also locked to a specific pilot (which could also be injured/killed). That's why locking planes and tanks or coding them to a specific pilot isn't a thing in real life, and neither should it be for a MS. Security for such machines are always in the docks/hangers and access into those places, rather than them being placed on the machine itself. I actually roll my eyes more when MSes are locked to a specific pilot.

LaBambaMan

Yeah, for state of the srt war machines capable of *insane* levels of destruction, there are basically zero security protocols for mobile suits for some reason.

OrphanAxis

Same reason there isn't much security on a tank or plane. There's usually a simple start protocol so it can be used quickly by just about anyone with training. They just assume that the people at the base would never let anyone near something they shouldn't be, especially with how far civilians would have to get past tons of soldiers and MP. It'd be awful to have a custom lock on a suit, have the pilot killed or debilitated when there is an attack, and the MS just becomes a useless chunk of metal that may even be blocking the runway other suits need. Theoretically, you want a decent amount of a base/ship's crew trained to at least be able to launch and fire at the most basic level. Part of the effectiveness of MS is supposed to be how easy and intuitive they are to learn, with a computer pulling a lot of the weight and the basic movements feeling more like an extension of your body as you gain experience.

LaBambaMan

Maybe not a custom lock, but at least needing a pilot ID or something. I get the idea of what you're saying, but at the rate MS get stolen (especially in UC) you'd think they'd want to crack down on that shit and put *something* in place to keep people from stealing their nuclear powered death robots.

nanaholic

A pilot ID would deter launching just as much. The only way you keep war machines safe is security on the docks/hangers. Most of the time in UC those places are already ruined/under attack/short on men anyway so it makes sense. Plus the weapons of the suits are usually separately kept, just like in real life. So even when someone steals a plane/tank/MS, if they don't have the ammo for their weapons the damage they can do is minimised.

penguintruth

Lots of OYW spinoffs and side stories but none (at least animated) for Zeta era.

Ilowe_042

Like everybody is asking an anime of Advance of Zeta or Sentinel

LordEmmerich

Is Advance of Zeta still popular now? As for Sentinel it's still a copyright mess.

fistchrist

The idea of seeing AoZ’s wackier designs in animation fills me with a deep dread.

Boulderdorf

I'm so tired of the fucking OYW. Almost 100 years of history to work off of in UC, but it feels like 70% of the content that gets pushed out just focuses on the same single year just because Zakus kits sell.

LordEmmerich

That's because many UC stories not set in the OYW ended up not selling as much, especially late UC.

Klutzy-Personality-3

what i wouldnt give for crossbone anime. or f90. or a f91 series. or something between dust/x-11 and g saviour. or after g saviour. or anything other than the one year war.

LordEmmerich

Honestly i'm not even sure if G-saviour is still canon the g-saviour game story is set after the movie though if you are interested. And there's also the prequel audio dramas.

bobdole3-2

Also, none of the OYW sidestories matter. It would be one thing if they were weaving this intricate, detailed, deep history of this fictional event, but they're not. Almost all of the works just ignore everything else and nothing ever has any sort of meaningful implication, no matter how important it really should be.

Boulderdorf

If anything, they start to detract from the setting. Like, what was the point of rushing Amuro and the White Base to deliver their Gundam's combat data if there were apparently like 30 other Gundam prototypes running around at the time? Either that or these side stories all simultaneously take place in the last few weeks of the war.

LordEmmerich

There's a currently running manga about a Titan crew in the Zeta era. Gundam Wearwolf.

Kris-mon-96

In UC how very little follow up there is between instalments, like what happened between ZZ and CCA that made Char rise up as Neo Zeon's leader, how and why Amuro joined Londo Bell when in Zeta he was clearly bothered by EF watching over him like a lab rat or where the hell is Sayla now. There are lots of details left unexplained that could've been answered in side stories but Banrise would rather beat the dead horse that is OYW to eternity.  As for AUs better planning and scheduling, WfM's production was catastrophic and it was just 24 episodes. Instead of rushing season 2 it should've released six months later and planned with three seasons from the start, they were already getting experimental so might as well go all out and do a richer worldbulding for possible future installments. It had the momentum, it brought in a new audience but Banrise still fumbled it but not being more ambitious.

sextard420

It would never happen, but a hundreds-long series reanimating 0079, Zeta, ZZ, and the full story of Char's Counterattack in the new Hathaway style would be a dream come true. An unambiguous and thorough retelling of the original saga, no forum browsing and independent research needed.

Radioactiveglowup

Just make the full The Origin already, right? I really liked the 6 ep OVA, and Cruz's Island was good.

basileusbrenton

I don't know I recently read a chapter from Origin and it showed Char easily overwhelming Amuro and it was just already too much for the amount of Zeon and Char wank in the manga. I love Char, but one of my most beloved memories of the first series is that you can pinpoint the exact moment Char was left in the dust skillwise compared to Amuro.

FrostyPost8473

Once Armuro fights the black tri star he's already past char.

sextard420

Problem is The Origin isn't Tomino

J765

That we need to rely on fan translations for almost all manga, instead of getting official translations. Some aren't even translated at all.

hyperdistortion

That’s largely a question of economics. As much as we as Gundam fans love the franchise, publishers have to weigh up a few key factors: 1) how many Gundam fans are there 2) how many Gundam fans will buy manga at all 3) how many Gundam fans will buy *this* manga And sadly, more often than not, the expected sales of a manga mean the publisher expects to make a loss on translating and printing the English-language editions. So, they don’t. Back in the day, when Bandai made a bigger push to sell Gundam in the US, we saw more English translations. That ended a good 10-15 years ago, sadly. Since then it’s only “big” manga like The Origin that’d be likely to make any money for publishers; pretty much everything else is too niche to justify the costs.

TurkeyFisher

The repetitiveness of some of the suits is annoying. I wish they made some bigger swings with some of the AU series' designs. Also not a fan of the young boy protagonist trope, even though I see why it works most of the time. I just want a bit more variety.

TemporaryLegendary

I relate to the last part a lot. Io Flemming is my favorite because he isn't a child and doesn't suffer from the intense mood swings of a teenager. He is just a cocky ass pilot doing his job.

Nocturnalux

Nor is Daryl, so we have a conflict between adults.

LordEmmerich

I mean, it's the main target audience of Gundam ultimately. The moments where we got adult protagonist were often for works made with pre-existing veteran fans in mind.

TurkeyFisher

Is it though? It seems like most Gundam fans are adults now, but maybe it's different in Japan. I also don't really hate the young boy protagonist thing, it just tends toward shallow characters, and I like the way they've mixed it up more recently. I like the protagonists from WfM, 00, and IBO, for instance.

Spectre_195

IBO is about of child soldiers who turn gangster. Child soldiers isn't just the demo it's a thematic motif. Though not all use it to great effect.

TurkeyFisher

I know, I'm using IBO as an example where I thought they gave him a more unique character. I do get that it's a thematic motif, and most of the time it works for me. I just wish they branched out from the formula more this deep into the franchise.

Zuriax

The lack of good games or even decent games on PC. I've wanted an Armored Core Gundam equivalent FOR AGES. The urge to kitbash to scratch that "build your own Gundam" itch is palpable. Encounters in Space did a good job of letting you roleplay a custom pilot. I just need the full experience inside of a custom AU just for that game.

word-word-numb3r

I cope with Super Robot Wars games

TemporaryLegendary

Those games are pretty similar to SD Gundam cross generation rays tbh. So if you like them you could try that. The SD factor is still eh. But they look less weird than in some other SD content.

TemporaryLegendary

The closest thing is breakers no? I honestly get what you mean tho. The only Gundam game I actually finished and enjoyed was Cross generations rays. And that's because I love looking at the suits. Even if they are SD versions.

Zuriax

Steam only has the bad version from what I hear. EDIT: I did love Gundam Breaker Mobile. Great game while it lasted.

TemporaryLegendary

Nah it's the upgraded version on steam. Sadly its 39 bucks, so maybe wait for a sale. Never tried the Gundam mobile games tbh. Nearly none of them were available in my region

TheProNoobCN

No, New Gundam Breaker is the bad version with honestly subpar customization options which is insane since the whole game is about customizing.

LaBambaMan

Char clones. Yes, I get it, Char is iconic. But not every series needs someone emulating him. It's okay to have nobody wear a mask/helmet/large glasses/whatever. It just feels cheap and tacky at this point.

stowrag

I actually want a Jerid clone. Jerid Messa was not a joke character. I would argue he was actually a competent pilot who got better over time (and he held his own against Kamille and even actually straight up beat him in a fair fight once or twice). He is (or could be) a protagonist in his own right, and a consistent threat to the heroes in battle. He had ambition and rose through the ranks of the titans as well, even as he literally had to scramble over the bodies of his comrades to get there. I just think his archetype has definite potential if they chose to revisit it, and right now I think the closest we’ve come is Athrun and/or Shin

CIRCLONTA6A

I’d argue Cronicle is actually a Jerid clone as well as being a Char clone. He’s got the mask and the customised suits and the ties to royalty, but he basically stops being a threat very very quickly and he spends most of the run getting humiliated before going completely and utterly off the deep end because he’s so swallowed by his anger (plus Katejina’s manipulations)

word-word-numb3r

Chronicle gets shoved out of his own mobile suit by a thirteen year old in his very first appearance. Jerid was pathetic, but not that pathetic

basileusbrenton

Uso is just on another level

sextard420

Jerid is top 5 characters across the franchise for me. He's a tragedy in that he's a talented but cocky pilot (normally a protagonist or supporting character archetype) who just happens to continuously get in the wrong place at the wrong time against the most naturally talented pilot at the time. He develops real bonds that further his growth, but keeps watching them die and he gets thrown into a pit where his eye only sees the object of all his suffering - Kamille - and it leads him further down the path of self-destruction. People like to simplify him as a jobber and a bully but he's a very realistic and tragic anti-villain.

kingominous16

Yeah but we need masked guys vs depressed teenagers.

FrostyPost8473

I thought zechs and Gato did it better

TemporaryLegendary

Agreed. Got pretty annoyed after masked evil guy number 6. Like bro. Try something new?

Ilowe_042

The best char clone (G Gundam) >!Master Asia !< doesn't even wear a mask I am saying this unironically. He genuinely is the best char clone imo

TemporaryLegendary

How is he a char clone? O.o I love master Asia And the master gundam.

Ilowe_042

(G Gundam) >!He is the character that represents the best the idea of what is Char. He is not just a guy with a mask, he is a powerful soldier with ideals fighting for the bad guys but secretely wants to destroy everything around him.!< >!He once wanted to make the world better but realized he actually was a pawn controlled by people who want the power for themselves. So he just said "Fuck it, if I can't change the world, I will destroy it and create a new world without today's problems" even if it makes him the bad guy.!< >!The character of Char is about the feeling of betrayal of a world made to crush people and the need to destroy it all in order to save humanity. If you look at it that way and not just "cOoL gUy WiTH a mASk" he is G Gundam's char clone!<

TemporaryLegendary

I guess that kinda makes sense. But doesn't he revert back to a good guy by the end? Or maybe I'm just forgetting shit, haven't watched G since it aired on TV lol

Ilowe_042

He never really was a bad guy compared to the big bad mean villain of G Gundam. He actually was the most human of them. From memory, he just died and said "gg wp" to Domon

TemporaryLegendary

Damn it seems like I need to rewatch G soon. I remember it as having some interesting Gundam designs and being a little goofy

LaBambaMan

Right? With some characters it makes sense, I'll totally give Full Frontel (despite his stupid ass name) a pass because he's supposed to be a *literal* Char clone. Lady Prospera, maybe? She was hiding her damage from the data storm, but I feel like a headband could have done much the same job. And considering that until recently, like *really* recently, Char wore the mask in less than half his appearances in animated media it seems even more silly to me (and no, can we not start with the "that was Quatro in Zeta hurr" meme shit?).

TemporaryLegendary

When it's simply to hide their identity like mu la flaga. Its OK. But when it's just to have another evil bad guy in a mask it gets stale AF. And then they do it again.. and agian..

LordEmmerich

Char clone isn't just a Gundam thing though, it's in many Sunrise properties.

HeadpattingFurina

I mean, in some series it made sense.

NeverBetter2333

Beyond the fandom's various self-inflicted wounds, my biggest issue is with corporate in general and their inability to seize the chances they get to make Gundam a world-wide phenomenon. Like with WFM, it was gigantic, but outside of small merch drops that were pretty much Japan exclusive, and gatcha game crossovers that are also mostly exclusive, there was little cross-promo with any other series, very little branding push, very little advertising, no doubling down on what people clearly loved about the series, nothing. Not even an Aerial in Gundam Evo, which could have honestly saved that game (provided it also came with a major overhaul to make it feel more original and less like a generic hero shooter, or lean more into that angle). Speaking on games, no games either that are worth their salt really. Most of them are budgetware tie-in games, and the few that \*are\* given effort, like real, genuine effort, are often forgotten about or never ported in the first place, despite them being either highly praised or extremely popular (or both even) with the people who actually get to touch the controls. The series suffers from Bandai or Sunrise being too afraid to make a real western push, even when the writing is on the wall that the west would \*love\* Gundam if it actually got the push out here it needed (and provided the fandom stopped gatekeeping about what shows are worth or not worth watching. I'm not a SEED fan for example, it's my least favorite, but it's still a gateway into the series and if I think someone would fall in love with Gundam by watching it, I suggest it).

TemporaryLegendary

Bandai is just ass with their franchises. Even kamen rider and other things have to constantly suffer because of their inability to understand there is a demand for it outside of Japan. P-bandai is a perfect example of how idiotic the company is. While I understand the good it also can do. It does way more bad than good in total. It just alienates a whole market.

LordEmmerich

Ultimately, there was also some situations where things made with the west in mind ended up not selling, so it's a complacated situation. Though requiem for venegance is made with western fans in mind as it's done by an european team, and the lvie action movie also is doing this but worldwide.

Nitrothunda21

I agree with you. I really think that G-Witch could have been a good point for Gundam to split away from war and be an interesting romance series. It should have been the cornerstone of the Reiwa era but Bandai just didn’t want to try anything new and it shows. Regarding games, Bandai definitely needs to try something new or go back to the older games. Getting FromSoftware to do another Gundam game would be massive with the revivale of Armoured Core and they could even get an fps large scale combat game with Battlefield or Star Wars Battlefront on the smaller end or Squad or Hell Let Loose on the larger end of the scale.

NeverBetter2333

I recently got AC 6 as it was on sale, and god I want an AC reskin of Gundam. Seriously just.. Hell, give us cross promo DLC, even if its just granddaddy and Char's Zaku i'd take it. That said, I don't think I want the series pivoting into a romance based series, I think its identity as a show based on war is far too important to its identity and cultural importance. Even with WFM's reduced focus on out-right war, it's touched on that a big part of the issues in Ad Stella are dirived from proxi-wars and spacian companies being so powerful and domineering that they crush earthians causing terrorism and rioting across the globe and even space. Without those things, the Ochs Earth incident likely never would have happened (spacians wanting to keep dominating under the guise of ethical concerns) and thus WFM likely never takes place (at least as we know it).  War is part of the series's core foundations, and splitting away from it would inevitably drive a lot of fans of the series away (at least in the mainline series. If they wanted to do more love story focused series as side projects i'd welcome it. Then again, I would just generally welcome more Gundam)

LavaSlime301

who would win posters /s nah first and foremost it's people that seem to take all their knowledge from memes and appear to have never actually paid attention when watching the shows, particularly common with Tomino's works.

Equivalent_Form_3923

Australia dosent get obliterated enough.

PPGN_DM_Exia

Nothing to do with the story but the fans. Saw a lot of frustrating gatekeeping lately in the fandom, mostly from Gundam veterans who went after the yuri fans who started watching G-Witch because of SuleMio.

stowrag

Going further on that point, it’s how much fans are inclined to yuck other fans’ yums. Whether it’s wing, seed, ibo, WfM or something else, it seems like someone is always going to bring negativity into the conversation, and not in a productive way that starts a discussion. They’re just being dicks who can’t let other people enjoy things. No series is perfect, and wanting to discuss that is fine, but the world doesn’t need to hear your opinion on how Seed sucks every single time an opportunity presents itself.

Galdrack

Yea exactly, I'm far more interested in hearing how say a SEED fan is annoyed by the direction of SEED Destiny than hearing a UC fan just shit on SEED altogether. Far too many people hooked on their one series rather than just allowing the franchise to explore different methods of story-telling.

LordEmmerich

SEED hating is only popular on US websites. Not the rest of the world, including some non US western communities. Like, SEED and even SEED DESTINY are not hated in France. and i'm excluding asian countries where SEED freedom released and show how popular the movie is even outside of Japan.

IVIorbe

Seed hater are cult at this point. When there something good happen to seed serie there alway someone come and ruin the party. I don't know why they can't just ignore the post about seed if they hate seed so much.

Galdrack

>SEED hating is only popular on US websites. Not the rest of the world, including some non UC community. I agree, being more specific I think it's mainly hated by male UC fans primarily from the US or other English speaking countries. A major criticism they have with it is around the amount of crying and really it just feels more like the "That's gay" kinda crowd. Cause yea for other anime fans in general it's not hated nearly as much in the same regions.

LordEmmerich

It's weird considering Gundam and most mechas shows as a whole very often shows emotions with characters, relationships and are not afraid to show their protagonist cry. They are very human shows whcih we don't see as much these days. I don't think ANY Gundam stories goes against this. at least from the animated works.

AvroKennedy124

You know it's pretty funny, despite hating that one show, that's the only thing they ever talk about. I don't know about you, but I rather talk about something I like.

Nocturnalux

Plenty of us “yuri fans” were already into Gundam long before WfM and longing for canon queer, front and center, in a franchise that has been around for so long. Besides that, new blood in a franchise is what keeps it alive.

hyperdistortion

Sadly, the gatekeeping is nothing new. It’s bordering on “it’s a feature, not a bug” in the Gundam fandom. First it was “shun the Wing fans” around 2000/01; then it was “shun the SEED fans” in 03/04; and so it went, in an endless waltz, right through to 2023 and “shun the Witch fans”. Spend a couple of decades in the English-speaking Gundam fandom and you’ll see it all. There are, sadly, all too many ‘fans’ of Gundam who want to keep the fandom ‘pure’. And their definition of that usually means excluding new entrants to the fandom, who might bring new energy and new ideas. Perhaps fortunately, these remain a minority. Unfortunately, they’re a *vocal* minority, so we have to endure their petty nonsense when it flares up.

LaBambaMan

I will never understand gatekeepers in something like Gundam. Oh no, someone got started with WfM, the...horror? In something as vast as Gundam there will be things you don't like that others do, and it's 100% okay for you two to not really interact with each other. Then again, I generally find gatekeeping to be bottom of the barrel bullshit no matter the subject.

word-word-numb3r

If I was a yuri fan I'd be very mad because there's barely any yuri in G-Witch to begin with

Radioactiveglowup

The most yuri episode was ep1. And then the rest was just nothing.

Klutzy-Personality-3

wedding ova when

MZYF

The gatekeeping "Gundam Veterans" had was really cringe. The whole time they were just clamoring for more blood! More war! Like they couldn't watch any show that didn't immediately have any action to keep them interested. Some of the comments also came off super elitist, that Gundam was a *DARK AND MATURE* series and that they were so much better than new fans for watching older Gundam

TemporaryLegendary

Oh damn.. didn't even know we had gatekeepers. I'm guessing it was something along the lines of "You came here just because of Yuri stuff! You don't even care about Gundam!" Which is kinda cringe. I started watching IBO because I loved Man with a mission (who did Raise your flag) and fell in love with the show quite fast. Have since then watched a shit ton of it.

PPGN_DM_Exia

>"You came here just because of Yuri stuff! You don't even care about Gundam!" Yep. And it got even worse with the "up to interpretation" fiasco which those gatekeepers used to further antagonize (i.e. "dunk on") the yuri shippers.

TemporaryLegendary

Oh god... How miserable those people sound.. I feel bad for the Yuri fans who finally got some representation, only to get shot down by angry middle aged men without lives.. :/

powermad80

We got the good ending anyways thanks to the final blu-ray volume with all the staff hard confirming everything so it's not like that matters anymore

TemporaryLegendary

Oh that's good to hear. Im glad people got the ending they deserved

PPGN_DM_Exia

Is there a source for this? I might have missed it. I do remember the unofficial artbook where many staff members drew them in wedding dresses and stuff, but don't recall anything officially.

[Interviews and stuff in the bonus content of the final blu-ray volume.](https://fxtwitter.com/alma314_/status/1737770712834990317?t=oETDOptI9PgnQbE_RJSdzw&s=19) This is on top of the BD version of the final episode making Miorine's wedding ring visible in more scenes & frames of animation than in the original TV cut.

For me, it’s the pacing and character overload that leads to a lot of the cast remaining very underwritten. It’s not necessarily having too many episodes- although at times also happens- as how they are handled. A lot of Gundam starts out with a bang, fizzles out during a middle part and then everything happens in a climax that is rushed and overcrowded. To some extent, this is not a Gundam exclusive problem but it does happen more than it probably should. To the point I expect a subpar endings, even to otherwise good series. At times, one feels some AUs struggle to cram “Gundam tropes” in ways that end up being a bit disastrous. Gundam also often straddles a fine line between “war is bad” and “look at ‘rm jiggly boobs’”. This has been toned down, fortunately, and does not apply all across the board but when it does…it sure does. Very difficult to take any consideration on the war seriously when each time the ship is hit, we are treated to jiggle boobs and the ship gets hit a lot (looking at you, SEED). This being just an egregious example of this kind of thing, that is also not Gundam exclusive but annoying.

seriousbangs

Pacing. The series has always had a problem with pacing. Editing and pacing in anything pre-Stardust Memory is just batshit insane. Seriously film students go study that chaos. And God help you if you try to watch A New Translation. When Buscuit was killed in IBO that's when shit was supposed to go south because he was the level headed one. WfM is one big pacing knightmare. I think Wing's pacing is OK, but it's been a while since my last watch. G Gundam kinda cheats because it can pad it's runtime with Monster of the Week stuff. Unicorn nails it though. There isn't a second in Unicorn that doesn't belong right where it is when it is.

PeanutButterCrisp

Shit video games. The fuck is the hold up on a good Gundam RPG?

Nekomimikamisama

1. Not much good video games. Most of my favourite are really old.Bandai really love to kill the good ones and replace by something bad.Gundam Breaker 3 -> New Gundam BreakerG Gen F -> PS2 era (Glad Genesis and Cross Rays are good again)G Gen Frontier(Mobile, ignore the hard grinding part) -> G Gen RE 2. Killed off Gundam War the TCG, forced it into Nexa. And pull a quick cash grab again on Cross War. 3. Lack of something as "silly" as G Gundam. P.S.: OMG!!! Gundam Braker 4 is coming!!!

kingominous16

>G Gen F -> PS2 era (Glad Genesis and Cross Rays are good again) Fax.

Ok_Abbreviations2320

When I hate a certain pilot and they end up dying. Almost every time that happens, I feel bad for them. Except with Iok Kujon in IBO. Fuck that guy.

Kregano_XCOMmodder

* Sunrise/Bandai not getting that they **need** to make their multi-season serialized shows 3 seasons long. * Not doing more with the AUs. * UC just being Federation vs insane spacenoids forever into G-Reco. * Not making better games.

LordEmmerich

??? The federation doesn't exist at all in G-reco.

Agent_Perrydot

No good modern games Too many OYW stories, we need more for the Gryps Conflict Refusal to make AU followups except for SEED P-Bandai Fandom infighting

Craniummon

Too much content over too many media - Comics suffered from it at point of bring Marvel to bankrupt (it's the MCU main problem also). Want to understand something? Read that obscure manga in Japanese and you might understand it. Wing Episode 0 is the best example, it's what Wing needed to be enjoyed. I do understand why screenplay is important and can resume stuff, but first you need to SHOW it up. Last chapter of Episode 0 is so important that's in Endless Waltz Movie ver (with another stuff). It's not on Digimon level were understand Adventure 02 is a hard exercise without the 2 first of Ryou Games in Wondersam (Another Tamer/Tag Tamers). That's one of the best ways to damage the narrative and lose your audience. Games are bad, just too bad. - We have some cool stuff like SRW, but not really with quality or that grab attention. To be fair, i think the problem is on try to adapt TV show media to Gaming. I'd rather use the Digimon approach here. Just start a new universe. About it, Gundam could have your own "gaming" universe with so many setups, either a Dynasty Warriors like or mainly a... Elden Ring like... Or a Age of Empires like... Unlimited possibilities. That's not something that i really see as a frustrating thing - But a generational franchise will always bring conflict due difference in opinions because the objective is sell the name. Live with that or leave. Not everything must be to my taste, for example, i think WFM is a horrendous thing but that doesn't mean that i can't enjoy other stuff. Just let your fetish away from me. Access stuff being a "poor" brazilian isn't really fault of Bandai, but i don't find nice paying 70usd for a HG or RG, that's sometimes MG level. Have access to franchise's merch is hard, but again, Gundam here is so small that i can't criticize no one for it... I just wanted to buy MGs at fair price... :(

MZYF

The length. Most Gundam series didn't need 50 eps to tells it's story and would have better pacing and tighter plot if it was cut down to a 3 cour show instead of 4 cour. Meanwhile WFM deserved another season to breath a bit more.

Kregano_XCOMmodder

>Most Gundam series didn't need 50 eps to tells it's story and would have better pacing and tighter plot if it was cut down to a 3 cour show instead of 4 cour. I could buy that in the Tomino era through Destiny, but every series from 00 onwards has consistently had problems caused by not having **more** episodes. Each AU (besides Cosmic Era) being a one-and-done means that each show has to spend time setting up its own universe, which eats up a lot of time. And three of the main draws for scifi stuff (which almost all mecha anime are) are the characters, the worlds, and the cool tech. If you're doing a serious war related story, it's **really** hard to do it if you don't spend time establishing the characters and what's going on in the world, because then the mecha fight scenes that **should** be cool/meaningful won't be due to the audience not caring. Literally every mainline Gundam show with 2 seasons has a flawed second season because it's cramming act 2 and 3 of a three act story into one contiguous block. The **only** good second season in a short run Gundam show was Build Divers Re:Rise, and that A) was sequel to Divers, so it didn't have to do as much backstory; B) super tightly focused on a handful of characters in one specific scenario. And even then it's kind of janky with pacing and delivery all around.

bobdole3-2

It's sort of a catch 22. The short series don't have enough time to fully flesh out their universes and develop plot, but Sunrise/Bandai have consistently proven that they haven't figured out how to manage the longer series. More than half of the single season 50 episode series had serious production issues. MSG, X, and Age got canceled, Tomino had a breakdown during Victory, Wing switched directors halfway through, Seed/Destiny had all sorts of drama, and that's just stuff I know off the top of my head without doing any research. And while many of the shows did wind up being successful despite these problems, it's still a real roll of the dice, especially with how expensive animation has started to become.

TemporaryLegendary

Agreed. I would have loved to see WFM get fleshed out more. The ending felt so rushed :/

TheUltimateWarplord

"Gundam VS" games not being released on PC, and it seems to even becoming just an arcade exclusive...

KABOOMBYTCH

No new thunderbolts or Hathaway flash

Tsugabut

I want to play the newest gundam versus on pc so bad. Imo that is the definitive gundam game. The only version available is on the ps4 and that is not the current one.  I also hate if a mobile suit has a great design but only has a limited screen time.

chocolate111592

I'd love having an emotionality mature pilot from the beginning of the series.

TemporaryLegendary

Thunderbolt is your friend.

VR_Dekalab

- Main Suit Colour Variety Not really frustrated but more like a small nitpick The classic White + Blue + Red + Yellow colour scheme kinda makes every main suit homogenous with each other. I just kinda would prefer some variety of colors. I know it's a different medium but I love Kamen Rider's variety in the main rider colors while still keeping elements of Ichigou in their designs.

Playful_Movie

Baaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddddddddaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii's bull\*\*\*\*.

All-Cesco

1. Poor games. The only good games are SD Gundam Generation games and the Mobile Operations 2 game, except Operations 2 has such bad connectivity that it makes the game awful to play. The hack & slash games are just uninspiring. We've had 49 of those kind of Gundam games and there's never a masterpiece coming out of it. It's a genre that was fun in the 90s but not my cup of tea.  2. Endings. Some series just just have terrible endings due to rushed production. And it's not just Gundam franchises, it's all across anime. So I am (maybe to a fault) inclined to say Japanese writers have to up their game.   3. Marketing. For being one of the oldest anime franchises, relatively few people know it exists or what it is.  I think these 3 points are my main issues with Gundam.

KingNth

Lack of GOOD games. Last time I really enjoyed a gundam game was SDGO if anyone remembers that

serpventime

built series other than the OG built which was really interesting in both story and ms department, the following sequels were simply meh or so-so worst offender within the latter built series was how bandai use it as a cheap excuses to recycle old or existing kits, its not even a decent custom-made 'out-of-the-box' compared to the likes of fenice, amazing exia, transient. they just color swap and call it a day

NairbYeldarb

In the UC, fraternizing with the enemy because they’re the opposite sex. Kamille might be the worst offender of this. But I think every UC Gundam protagonist does it. I couldn’t even get past the first episode of 08th MS team because within the first 15 mins two enemy soldiers are flirting with each other. It’s so, so frustrating to me. I get that these protags are young but you’d think that when you are literally fighting for survival that romancing the enemy would be the furthest thing from your mind.

Vik-6occ

Reliance on teenage protagonists. This is an issue I have with anime at large. Just watched chars counter attack and I found myself enjoying it tremendously, until quess or hathaway were focused on. To be fair they do each have worthwhile value to the story, but I hated their relationship babbling and many of their decisions, especially hathaways friendly fire incident.

LordEmmerich

I mean that's just because young people are the core audience of anime for most of the time. CCA is an exception because it was a movie made for pre-existing veteran fans first.

EvoDoesGood

Right now, the inaccessible nature of a lot of the content. Like, I'd love to watch things like X and Turn A and Recongusta but I just can't find anywhere to watch it normally and I really don't want to have to pay for a Blu-ray that'll limit where I can watch. I know some of the shows rotate on GundamInfo but I'm willing to buy digital versions if only they were available.

TemporaryLegendary

I'm lucky I've been a pirate for so long because of that issue, just with Kamen rider. So I have no qualms about watching stuff on the seas If it's not available easily.

There isn't a good tool out there for people to create custom gundams in a program to see how their kit bashes will look together before building the actual thing

stowrag

Right now it’s how ~~good~~ much better WfM *could* have been with a little more… I don’t know, faith? Forethought? Common sense?

Flam3Emperor622

Spoken like someone who doesn’t critically analyze the events of a series.

stowrag

I actually like WfM. I already think it’s good (that’s why I rephrased my post). But there’s no arguing that they didn’t give the story their all, and even that it was mismanaged. Not showing Chuchu in a mobile suit fight is not a “choice”, it’s a mistake. Leaving Delling (the original villain of the prologue) in a coma throughout season 2 only to have him wake up in time to make a phone call that accomplishes absolutely nothing is not a “choice”, it is a mistake. (Or locking away 3 of the most important/interesting characters in a closet for most of the second season) What we got is not bad. I even applaud some of the more subversive choices, like Prospera choosing love/family over revenge. But it pales in comparison to what every single fan imagined for the series from its absolutely incredible beginning. (The prologue alone is probably my favorite single episode in the whole franchise) It is not a controversial statement to say that it could have been even better than it was.

Background-Taro-8323

I'll also echo good video games. When I say something like fire emblem or front mission, what I mean is something with teeth. The closest I feel like I got to something like armored core was battle alliance and personally I feel like it was busted as hell and the story was very weak. I'm growing very very tired of playing through scenes in the various anime. In the anime scene, I find some of the fan service uncomfortable. I'd be recommending IBO a lot more if it didn't have some the yikes fan service it has. MSG, Zeta, ZZ, and CCA are solid, but the aging animation and dated writing makes for a hard pitch (Char is a great antagonist but pretty cringe by the end). I accept Seeds popularity, but being in the US it's a hard sell to folks I would be recommending Gundam to. Witch from Mercury is amazing, but it's lack of a well paced 2nd/3rd act kills me. I have never felt so hood winked in my life. Now that I think about it, the difficulty in finding a single place to even watch any of Gundam legally is absurd. I think my frustrations aren't that irrational, I see other anime and video game studios doing what I wish BN would do so I know they can do better, they choose not to.

Kregano_XCOMmodder

>The closest I feel like I got to something like armored core was battle alliance and personally I feel like it was busted as hell and the story was very weak. I'm growing very very tired of playing through scenes in the various anime. I once saw a really good article breaking down how Battle Alliance's weak story makes total sense from a business perspective. It's literally the lowest possible budget way to do a "crossover" title and show off as much cool stuff to newbies in one story. I'd love a proper Gundam crossover game with either the gameplay of Harebrained Schemes BattleTech, Phantom Brigade, or Armored Core, but with an actual crossover plot where the characters can interact outside of the stages.

LordEmmerich

>Char is a great antagonist but pretty cringe by the end That's...literally the point,. Char is an human character first, this includes flaws and all. You don't have many experience with Tomino's writing outside of Gundam?

Keyki_LoL

For it’s not the gundam franchise but more people who don’t know gundam and think every mecha anime is gundam. Kinda like how every gundam is a mobile suit but not every mobile suit is a gundam.

-_Kudos_-

That the main character is always a child, I would kill for an all adult Gundam series more like Thunderbolt

TemporaryLegendary

Yeessss. Thunderbolt is my fav for that reason. Io doesn't have the emotional tantrums nearly every seasons MC suffers from at some point.

DuelX102

What examples do you have of this commander-trap scenario? For me, the delay in film releases in the west is frustrating. We got dub episodes of WfM streaming within a day. But Hathaway and Cucuruz Doans Island and Seed Freedom movies take months. I dont get it. If Freedom was rentable on Amazon, then I would drop $5 or $10 to watch it today.

J765

> But Hathaway (...) take months Hathaway released three weeks after it premiered in Japanese cinemas worldwide on Netflix.

Dishbringer

IBO S2. It was so frustrating I stoped buying gunpla for 5 years.

Radioactiveglowup

Three real nitpicks. Two small, one big. Small 1: Man, how many times are people going to do reckless, impulsive, and incredibly dangerous insubordination, nearly getting many people killed, and never really learning? In Zeta, each character under the age of 25 seems to do it at least 4 times. Small 2: The OYW is a silly length of time for a big WW2 style war. Especially when the agency of all characters starts only in the last 4-5 months! Big: When the directors change and they utterly gut what could have been perfection. Second halves of each of these shows often seem to take a dive. 08th MS had a strange 2nd half shift, 0083 DEFINITELY sufferred the worst, and most recently WFM's second half was just rushed. Plus dumb stuff like resurrecting valiantly sacrificed characters in SEED, or 00's stupid Weeaboo Darth Vader.

Vecah2236

If Bandai could change anything from Gundam lore they would make the One Year War into the Five Year War.

Kregano_XCOMmodder

>00's stupid Weeaboo Darth Vader. Honestly, given what Mizushima did with the GN naked space and the final battle being RX-78 vs Exia, I wonder if that was deliberately done the way it was to take the piss out of the Char clone trope.

LordChimera_0

Still limited to our solar system. Something like the scale of BT is what I like to see more. A Gundam timeline based on the premise can have multiple generational story like UC while taking place on other parts of space. The FTL doesn't have to be SW-fast so that each conflict seems distant.

ehmarkymark

This is a really underrated opinion. I've always loved the idea of far future post Earth setting for Gundam. Or like Macross with alien races that also have mechs/biomechs and FTL travel so we can leave the solar system behind, or it's so far in the future Earth is desolate/uninhabitable (Gundam X sorta has this vibe though still settles for being a what-if UC scenario instead).

Bladescorpion

In lore: Earth Forces mistrusting Amuro. Dude literally became a war traumatized teen, was an ace, and in Zeta he’s basically under house arrest, and they try to keep him away of Gundam and high performance suits just because he’s a newtype. He’s your ace. The newtype space magic. Making the CCA asteroid disappear and giving unicorns the power to destroy reality or w/e. Fan base wise: The part of fan base that want to turn Gundam into a sword art online and twilight relationship thing. It’s cringe. Gatekeep more.

sylpher250

Somehow there's always a regular military dude constantly wearing a mask and not raising questions. I can understand if he belonged to special forces, or militia, or some shadow group, but no, from everyone else's perspective, it's just okay for someone in the ranks to always be hiding their face. It's just comical, really.

Computer_Fox3

I find myself frustrated by just how close to perfection many of the series come, yet they fall short. The writing fumbles the bag here and there, the ending doesn't quite land, or the rushed production schedule is apparent. Like... Zeta and ZZ are some of my favorite Gundam shows but their problems just bug the hell out of me. Zeta does Fa and Reccoa dirty. ZZ's ending is a bit unsatisfying.  Hell, I'd even argue 08th MS Team's final episode isn't necessary. Obviously the OG MSG would have been basically perfect with 50 episodes.  And WfM would have been 5/5 if they let it have a slightly longer schedule.

RoosterC88

Suits moving and reacting like humans instead of 18m mecha. AMBAC stuff is fine but Unicorn goin limp? nah

SharkChew

No good games that aren't multiplayer or GAAS and when a non-custom grunt gets released as P-Bandai.

Bingobango20

How barebone ms functionality were explained in the series, i want knights and magic enthusiasm!

sextard420

Everyone else has said it, but no good video games. Please, just give me a Titanfall-style Gundam game, PLEASE! It would be amazing!

TemporaryLegendary

Am I stupid or didn't they actually try to do that? I vaguely remember a game where pilots fought and could use suits.

unlimitednightsky

The fact they keep returning to the same tropes. In a series that is so vast, must every entry be so similar?

LordEmmerich

Because it sell.

TemporaryLegendary

Oh I can agree with that. It's why Build fighters, G and Thunderbolt are my favs. They are all unique in their own way.

ShortBus_Sheriff

As much as I love cca I still think belatorickas children was a better ending for amuro

whee38

Federation grunt MS being outright cannon fodder

TheBigFreeze8

Maybe this is just me, but I'm really getting tired of the protagonists being OP as fuck from the jump. I know these shows are fundamentally always going to be about a main character and their superweapon, but WFM in particular gave me enormous gundam-wank-fatigue. Suletta was so comically unchallenged in every fight that I realised I've been rooting against her since the second Guel duel. How the hell do you design a gundam series where losing a fight can have much lower, more nuanced stakes and still refuse to ever let the MC lose? Especially when it's so clearly stated to be due to the totally unfair match-up that everything else in the setting has vs Aerial. It actually made me go back and look at some of the Gundam shows I like differently. IBO is still my favourite, but I realise now that Mika and Barbatos never really interested me as much as other characters. Akihiro, Shino, Gaelio and even Hush were the ones I was excited to see. Though I admit that Mika's OPness was played a lot better, both because of the toll it took on him and his friends(and not just the physical one), and because of the way the show ended. I started SEED the other week and actually dropped it super early when the stuff about Kira being a coordinator who was naturally better than everyone came out. I'm sure it's good, but I just don't want that stuff. I've been watching the OG show now, and seeing Amuro genuinely struggle and grow, as well as seeing his initially top-of-the-line mobile suit get steadily outclassed and how he adapts to that, has been a breath of fresh air.

Nena_Trinity

Female characters just sits there watching while male characters does everything is getting really old...

JazzlikeSmile1523

Kids disobeying direct orders because they think they know better than the adults in the room. (Specifically thinking of Kio, but I'm sure there are others too.) The lack of Xbox games. The UC as a whole.

kingominous16

>The UC as a whole. Why?
