Pups bred from reputable breeders will cost around that much. There are a lot of costs involved with breeding responsibly. Health tests on both the parents, events to judge the worthiness of the pup to be bred, stud fees, whelping materials, food, vaccinations for pups, etc. Any "discount" pup will not be responsibly bred.   Why does this matter? "Just put any two dogs together, it doesnt matter for a pet" being the thinking... well if you just pair any 2 dogs together without thought, care, and testing, then you end up with dogs that may have major health and/or behavioral issues. They may start to not look like an Italian greyhound anymore too because parents aren't being selected for type. They may end up with structural issues in their form and function because the parents weren't chosen purposefully. Over genations these issues multiply. Its a huge problem in popular breeds with the number of irresponsible breeders creating major temperament and health issues for those breeds ie, numerous goldens now with behavior issues and cancer rampant. When going the purchasing route, it's important to only support responsible breeders or go the adoption route.  Now there aren't a large number of iggies in rescue, but they are possible to find. If your budget doesn't support the cost of a reputably bred puppy, either save up some more, or put an application in with a reputable rescue. Edited: a word

$2500 is cheap for a well bred dog. Remind you, you are hedging against major vet bills later in the dogs life, betting that their temperament and personality will be within the bell curve of the breed, and lastly supporting people who want to improve the breed and preserve it.

Personally I believe if this breed is misbred by an inexperienced breeder who doesn’t health test and know what they are doing, youre looking at over 2500$ in vet bills. I always recommend using the AKC puppy list marketplace. I have 3 IGS all way different prices. (3500,2500,1500) these prices were based on many factors but all came from AKC and CKC

AKC is just a registry of lineage, it doesn’t necessarily mean the pup is from a good breeder. I’d start with the IGCA breeder referral list. But there are some not great breeders even there.

I believe that individuals should look at all resources and yes IGCA is another good resource, as well. Personally, I refer to those two things on top of online reputation, others experiences with the breeder through forums and social media outlets. The AKC puppy list lets you know which reputable breeders have puppies and when. It is how I found one of the breeders I worked with who is very reputable and has IGs who have established show careers. What I am getting at is avoiding backyard breeders and other online avenues that promote terrible conditions and neglect. I know some slip through the cracks but for the most part if they are affiliated with the AKC, IGCA and other associations, it *generally* would lean towards a positive reputation.

Make sure you get pet insurance when you get your IG. If you can’t afford $2500 for the puppy, how would you afford $8000 for the surgery to repair a broken leg?

I got my pup from here. https://tailwaggingk9s.tripod.com/joyfulitaliangreyhounds/igs-available.html

I get some red flag vibes from that site. They don't necessarily look like a scam, but the fact that they have a $500 discount to sell a puppy without AKC papers stating that it is not cheap to register is a huge red flag. It is only $25 per litter and $2 per pup to register with the AKC. So that seems super sketchy. I'm wondering if they have even done any health testing on the parents prior to breeding. That is where a bulk of a puppy cost usually stems from and how some disreputable breeders skimp to save $ and make maximum profit. Most reputable breeders merely break even with what they charge per pup. I don't see anything on their site to suggest that they have done any of the minimum recommended health tests per the IGCA (Italian Greyhound Club of America).

I don't know. She has the parents DNA tested. Some.of her dogs are show dogs. When I got mine he had all his shots up to date. My vet was shocked on how well documented everything was. It is a small town in the middle of no where south Carolina using a website from 20 years ago.

Health testing is more than just DNA. Per IGCA, recommended tests are: OFA Patella Evaluation – evaluation from veterinarian, once after age 12 months OFA Hip Evaluation – hip x-ray, once after age 24 months OFA Thyroid Evaluation – blood test, annually from ages two to four years and then bi-annually until age 8 years OFA Ophthalmologist Evaluation – eye exam, annually until age 10 years Susceptibility to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – DNA Test – once, any age  Susceptibility to Primary Closed Angle Glaucoma (PCAG) – DNA Test – once, any age  Familial Enamel Hypoplasia – DNA Test – once, any age  Canine Genetic Diversity Testing – DNA Test – once, any age  Brucellosis – prior to each breeding.
