Third one had its moments but it really felt like it didn't know what it was doing. Like the things it did right were only good through sheer dumb luck.
Spider-man 3 is so underrated. Personally, I like it better than the first one. The exploration of its vanity and revenge themes are done so well through the story and characters. Also, Raimi and Pope make an amazing action duo!
Even more so, I found that its theme of forgiveness, that’s borne out of the vanity/revenge story, to be realized in a surprisingly moving and profound way
Exactly! The finale in Spider-man 3 is spectacular! Anyone can be redeemed if they truly make the effort to right their wrongs, whether it be Peter, Harry, or even Flint.
I have just come around to Prometheus after rewatching it for the first time. It could have been better, especially given how good it looks, but they tried to get too cute with the origins of things, and of course the characters make a lot of very stupid decisions that the characters in 1-3 wouldn’t have made. But it’s not bad. I rank it 4th in the series.
For me it’s the original Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark. Sequels after that were inferior and the Steve Martin movies don’t count because they’re a reboot.
I was going to say this but when I revisited the original trilogy recently I came away thinking it’s only the first one that really works. Should have never had sequels
Gym-kataing a raptor was fun though
I hate 3. It feels like a Sci-Fi Channel horror movie. The Lost World suffers a few notable flaws, but it's otherwise loaded with Speibergian goodness.
JP3 is well made sci-fi channel horror trash. Enjoyable, but in a different category compared to the first one. First JP is sci-fi adventure masterpiece.
Seconded. The Lost World is awesome. One cheesy raptor kick, and everyone just forgets about the opening, the InGen chase, the raptor field chase, the RV set piece, etc.
I’ll go to bat for 3 knowing what it could’ve been had the studio just let Fincher cook.
I’ll even defend 4, but only as a Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie
But the drop off from Aliens is real.
Fuck it. I’ll go to bat for Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Alien Resurrection. It’s definitely not better than the first two, but I love it in its own weird way.
I honestly really love the first four Aliens films for the same reasons I love the first four Mission Impossible films. Because they are unequivocally Director-driven. They’re all pretty radically different for the one before it & that rules. You could throw any of them on if you’re having a marathon of that filmmaker and their voice shines through (even Fincher’s with all the studio interference).
(I also love Mission impossible 5-7 & am excited for the possibly final eighth)
Yeah I actually liked Psycho 3 quite a bit, especially the third act upstairs. Psycho 4 is kinda a slog. All the prequel stuff IMO is bad, but all the sequel stuff with Norman isn’t bad.
Ngl I thought the Netflix one was great time. It had some cool moments, some hilarious stupid moments (that weirdly felt kinda self aware and intentional), and was barely over an hour long.
I’ve heard something like that. I’m sure it probably doesn’t match the quality of the first and the complete goofy insanity (in a good way) of the second, but glad you enjoyed that one.
I personally really enjoyed at worlds end, it’s a bit long but I love the whole pirate court idea, the first two are still definitely better but not deserving for this list imo
I like it more than the first one. Also most Xmas movies aren’t “good” by film critic metrics. They’re good if you love them. Not every movie is meant for Oscar’s.
I understand not liking The Dark Knight Rises, but I thoroughly enjoy it. It is a bit messier than the first two, but the emotional highs easily get me through the film. I adore the scene when we first see Batman in costume again; it always brings me back to how special it felt to see it in theaters.
Nolan Batman is my favorite trilogy, so I’m biased and to each their own though! How’d you enjoy The Batman?
I never got that chance to see it in theaters, but I fell asleep as well. It does have its moments, but I just feel the good outweighs the bad. Luckily, the first two are so good that it doesn't drag the trilogy down.
I love how each of the first four Star Wars films has an extra simultaneous battle in the third act.
New Hope: Death Star run
Empire: Vader fight / Cloud City
Jedi: Death Star run / Endor / Emperor fight
Phantom Menace: Darth Maul / Gungans / Anakin space station / Theed city fight
O recently gave another chance to Beyond the Thunderdome and was ready to completely change my mind, this movie is actually very entertaining... Until he ended up in a totally different movie in the second half.
I don’t think you can delineate in the scream franchise, same characters/actors with story continuity and I’d say it may be the slasher franchise with the highest average quality across the films…. Scream 3 is the worst and that’s still not close to as bad as some of the flops in Halloween, Childs Play, Friday the 13th, Elm Street, etc.
That doesn’t mean it’s not a good movie. The fast and furious franchise is as mindless as can be and 8 out of the 10 are good (with a few hitting great).
Yeah, this is the first R rated movie I saw in theaters, so maybe some nostalgia, but I think this movie has some really decent moments and is overall fun. A lot of the humor really holds it back.
The Purge and The Purge Anarchy although the Purge has a way lower score than I thought it would have an IMDB so maybe I’m in the minority of think that movie is great…
Police Story 1 & 2.
When Stanley Tong took over for directing 3 & 4 from Jackie Chan the vibe just changed entirely. He's just nowhere near as good at directing action or comedy as Chan, and the vibe changed so much. It's really a shame Jackie Chan is so underrated as a director. There's really nobody else like him. Genuinely incredible auteur.
Athough I do like 5 quite a bit and like to see it as the 3rd. If only they brought back Maggie Cheung for it... Had a great plot that honestly feels rather prophetic. Plus Benny Chan really was able to capture the chaotic energy and versatile tone of the first two films. Not nearly a masterpiece like the first two films, but still fantastic and pretty underrated.
I really like Supercop, I thought it kept the balance of action and comedy about as well as the first two. And I find Jessica a really memorable and fun character, plus the action sets were so big and well done imo
But DKR has that great scene where John "Robbin" Blake figures out that Bruce Wayne is Batman because he can sense orphans by their eyes. It establishes the existence of orphan detecting magic in the franchise.
People don't talk enough about John "Robbin" Blake and how his entire subplot really ties the film together.
The Godfather
this used to be true but FFC’s re-edited Coda: Godfather Part III is actually decent now.
However, the Coda ending is far worse than the theatrical cut
Yeah the reorganization of the story works...but the ending of Coda basically tanks it.
Hellraiser
Remake kinda shreds and I like that really nasty one, Judgement
I watched the remake last night & it was so much better than I expected! it was gnarly & i actually liked some of the characters
Gonna admit that I kinda liked the third one only slightly less than the second.
Third one had its moments but it really felt like it didn't know what it was doing. Like the things it did right were only good through sheer dumb luck.
Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980)
Really really good one
![gif](giphy|141wuJxikpgHYY) Are you kidding me
I love that third one.
I will never understand why Spiderman 3 gets so much hate, I think its much better then the first one
REC, the horror movie
Shrek
Puss in boots: The last wish feels like essentially another good Shrek film
True- but I wouldn't call it a "Shrek" film
Shrek Cinematic Universe
Shrek 4 is great
Shrek 4 is good
They down vote you because you speak the truth. Shrek 4 is great.
I hate that one the most. Barely feels like a real movie. It's a 'what if?' story.
Imo it barely even feels like a shrek movie.
Perfect
Beverly Hills Cop (though hopefully the new movie will prove me wrong)
Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane were both pretty good. Not so much that 3rd one…. Pretty big balls move to release it same day though.
Was the third one the space one?
Yeah, Cloverfield Paradox. Announced in an ad during the super bowl I believe and then released that night on Netflix.
There was a second psycho?
there's actually 4 psycho movies lol
Huh.
They get weird... Be warned.
4 and a remake
Austin Powers? Ghostbusters?
Good call with Austin Powers. I want to say Naked Gun too but it's been awhile since I've seen 2 or 3.
Naaah, 3rd Naked Gun is way better than the second one
"I pinched off a little rosebud for ya"
I liked Goldmember. I wouldn't say it’s bad, but the first two are definitely the best. Haven’t seen any of the ghostbusters in a very long time.
Wow is that common opinion on Austin Powers? I love Goldmember.
I'm personally an Alien 3 and prometheus truther. My actual answer is Lethal Weapon though.
Prometheus rips. Looking forward to Romulus; hopefully a good bounce back from Covenant.
The Assembly Cut of alien 3 is great
3 is the low point...but I actually really enjoy 4...
What about Lethal Weapon 5? https://preview.redd.it/fb8680ug8e9d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce081f897003c584f02552c84059f87fc8275376
For me it’s the original Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark. Sequels after that were inferior and the Steve Martin movies don’t count because they’re a reboot.
Since no one has said it yet; **Saw 1 and 2**.
3, 6, and X are all bangers
Saw X was good though
That's a lotta movies before it gets good again
Saw VI isn’t great, but unironically one of the better critiques of the insurance industry in popular film.
Saw 2 is the best imo, but there are still some solid Saw movies scattered through the franchise
Jurassic Park
I was going to say this but when I revisited the original trilogy recently I came away thinking it’s only the first one that really works. Should have never had sequels Gym-kataing a raptor was fun though
They're making a seventh...
Completely agree
nah lost world is worse than 3
3 is better than 2.
Seconded. The Lost World is awesome. One cheesy raptor kick, and everyone just forgets about the opening, the InGen chase, the raptor field chase, the RV set piece, etc.
I can see that. Lost World is more of a guilty pleasure for me but I’d still argue it’s better then all the other sequels
I’m a Jurassic World 1 defender. But World 2 and 3 I cannot defend
Hard disagree about Sam Raimi’s spider-man trilogy being in here, the third movie is a work of art
It’s a little goofy but it’s still so good
Honestly they’re all goofy, it’s a man swinging around in a spandex suit any tries to make it more serious feel hilariously off-tone to me
I haven't seen it in years, but Sandman's villain arc is heartbreaking if I recall
Robocop, although Robocop 2 is still pretty weak compared to the first.
I like robocop 2 more, but I have garbage taste
yeah but having a character named ‘robocop 2’ in the movie goes a long way towards redeeming it.
I will go up to bat for Alien 3 all day every day over Aliens, even if it’s incorrect.
I’ll go to bat for 3 knowing what it could’ve been had the studio just let Fincher cook. I’ll even defend 4, but only as a Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie But the drop off from Aliens is real.
Assembly Cut of Alien 3 is great. Not on the level with the first two, but in my opinion in top 10 sci-fi horror movies.
Agreed and Prometheus isn’t bad either.
It's your opinion. Opinions can't be incorrect.
But they can be bad!
I hate Alien 3, but I can't deny this take goes hard. Respect.
Fuck it. I’ll go to bat for Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Alien Resurrection. It’s definitely not better than the first two, but I love it in its own weird way.
It works as a Jean-Pierre Jeunet film more than it works as an Alien movie
I honestly really love the first four Aliens films for the same reasons I love the first four Mission Impossible films. Because they are unequivocally Director-driven. They’re all pretty radically different for the one before it & that rules. You could throw any of them on if you’re having a marathon of that filmmaker and their voice shines through (even Fincher’s with all the studio interference). (I also love Mission impossible 5-7 & am excited for the possibly final eighth)
I liked Alien 3 until >!they killed off Charles Dance’s character not even halfway through the movie.!<
Like when Mahershala Ali leaves Moonlight. You really feel their absence.
It’s one thing to go to bat for Alien 3, but you prefer it over Aliens? Not happy with the action tilt?
The assembly cut is better than aliens
I fully support your right to be wrong
I'm a big third movie enjoyer tbh. Batman Forever, JP3, Return of the Jedi, Alien 3, Last Crusade. Give it to me!
Hold on, no one here was saying ROTJ is bad!
Men in Black Ghostbusters The Mighty Ducks and D2
MIB > MIB3 > MIB2 (Haven't seen the most recent one)
Home Alone. Ace Ventura
Psycho III is underrated Psycho IV had a good backstory and a nice closure to the franchise right before Anthony Perkins passed.
Yeah I actually liked Psycho 3 quite a bit, especially the third act upstairs. Psycho 4 is kinda a slog. All the prequel stuff IMO is bad, but all the sequel stuff with Norman isn’t bad.
Although I’ve only watched the first two Texas Chainsaw films, from what I’ve heard the rest of the films are stinkers.
You made the right decision.
Let's go! My favorite one, two Punch
Pirates of the Caribbean
At World's End is pretty good, though, just not in the same league as the first.
Agreed! 1 is a masterpiece and 2 is great - way ahead of the rest of the franchise.
I personally really enjoyed at worlds end, it’s a bit long but I love the whole pirate court idea, the first two are still definitely better but not deserving for this list imo
I was a sucker for the pirate kings too!
Home Alone 2 is not a good movie. I love it for purely nostalgic reasons.
I like it more than the first one. Also most Xmas movies aren’t “good” by film critic metrics. They’re good if you love them. Not every movie is meant for Oscar’s.
Hot take, but Toy Story
Toy Story 3 is the best one tho
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight
I understand not liking The Dark Knight Rises, but I thoroughly enjoy it. It is a bit messier than the first two, but the emotional highs easily get me through the film. I adore the scene when we first see Batman in costume again; it always brings me back to how special it felt to see it in theaters. Nolan Batman is my favorite trilogy, so I’m biased and to each their own though! How’d you enjoy The Batman?
I literally almost fell asleep a couple times watching TDKR in the theater.
I never got that chance to see it in theaters, but I fell asleep as well. It does have its moments, but I just feel the good outweighs the bad. Luckily, the first two are so good that it doesn't drag the trilogy down.
The Dark Knight Rises is also amazing.
Get spider-man off this god damn list
X-Men and X2: X-Men United
What about First Class and DOFP?
X-Men is the rare franchise where I feel like the prequels work better as movies than the originals
Star Wars
I do not get the hate for ROTJ
It’s the weakest but not a bad movie
It's just not nearly as tight of a script. Still a lot of fun scenes, but the back half of the film is a lot to follow.
I love how each of the first four Star Wars films has an extra simultaneous battle in the third act. New Hope: Death Star run Empire: Vader fight / Cloud City Jedi: Death Star run / Endor / Emperor fight Phantom Menace: Darth Maul / Gungans / Anakin space station / Theed city fight
You may not have noticed it....but your brain did.
First two and a half
Nah
Christopher Reeve Superman
Kung Fu Panda
X-Men. First movie still holds up and the second was a badass sequel
I mostly agree but I do think Days of Future Past was really strong
Depends how you look at the Mad Max movies. Beyond Thunderdome is alright to me, but some don’t love it
Kung fu Panda Shrek The Strangers
Personally disagree on Kung Fu Panda. Panda Brian Cranston and JK Simmons and his rocking villain theme are always a win.
Shrek Forever After was really good
Hangover
Matrix
If we ignore Fury Road and Furiosa, I think only the first two movies were great in the classic Mad Max trilogy.
O recently gave another chance to Beyond the Thunderdome and was ready to completely change my mind, this movie is actually very entertaining... Until he ended up in a totally different movie in the second half.
Robocop.
Hellraiser for sure IMO
Is Psycho II good?
I’d say so. I was very impressed with it and found it exceptional. It has clever subversions to the original and further deepens Norman’s character.
Ninja Turtles
Godfather
X-Men if you’re focusing on the original ‘00-‘07 trilogy.
Not the point, but I'm convinced with all the Spider-Man 3 defenders here that people no longer realise "so bad it's good" doesn't actually = good lol
hunger games
Scary movie 1 & 2 Three Ninjas 1 & 2 TMNT 1 & 2 Scream 1 & 2 (of the original trilogy)
Star Wars
C’mon I understand not everyone likes the prequels but Return of the Jedi?
It was the weakest of the original trilogy, but still very good. I can understand this opinion though.
Lots of Dreamworks franchises, actually. Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and How To Train Your Dragon (imho)
No, and I disagree about Batman and Alien
Terminator 3 is mindless fun and the ending deserves credit for breaking the Hollywood mold.
>Terminator 3 is mindless
That doesn’t mean it’s not a good movie. The fast and furious franchise is as mindless as can be and 8 out of the 10 are good (with a few hitting great).
Yeah, this is the first R rated movie I saw in theaters, so maybe some nostalgia, but I think this movie has some really decent moments and is overall fun. A lot of the humor really holds it back.
Home Alone
It’s on there already
What about Home Alone?
Spider-Man 3 is good. The Raimi trilogy doesn’t deserve to be on here.
With nostalgia and memes, it’s a fun movie to look back on. But it’s also a mess.
Texas Chainsaw
Halloween 1 and 2
Hell nah Tremors 4 is awesome To contribute to the list, only Hellraiser 1 and 2 are good
SPIDER-MAN 3 WAS GOOD
Lost world jurassic park
Home Alone
The Purge and The Purge Anarchy although the Purge has a way lower score than I thought it would have an IMDB so maybe I’m in the minority of think that movie is great…
Young guns 1 and 2
Spider man 3 is my favorite movie /srs
Batman forever not only is a good movie, but is the best of those 4 films. Fight me
The Conjuring. 1 was great, 2 was pretty solid, 3 was horrible. Guess we’ll have to see how 4 turns out, though
Hey man Spider-Man 3 is a masterpiece
Home Alone 3 was good I’m convinced no one is even giving it a chance.
Tremors 4 is super fun tho.
I really like Supercop, I thought it kept the balance of action and comedy about as well as the first two. And I find Jessica a really memorable and fun character, plus the action sets were so big and well done imo
Seems like Quiet Place is joining this list
Star Wars
I'm gonna argue with you. Tremors 3 and 4 are good.
They must forget that the Dark Knight Trilogy and The Batman exists.
I’ll go for it - the Nolan Batman trilogy. DKR makes absolutely no sense logistically when the others have SOME attempt at grounding Bruce.
Dark Knight Rises doesn’t deserve the libel it’s getting in these comments.
I think Return of The Jedi it getting the short end of the stick too lol
Some Batman Forever slander I see
I rock with Terminator: Dark Fate
If anything I just can think of a lot less
Star wars
Am I the only one here to stand up for the masterpiece known as Spider-Man 3?
I think Terminator 3 is pretty good ngl
Ghostbusters
insidious. First was pretty great, second was good. We do not talk about the other ones
