Just finished watching and felt like I had deja vu - sorry if I'm out of the loop and skits are recycled but I've been watching from UK a few years and it seemed much more noticeable. The recording studio skit was done before? And then the one with the guys in the purple suits? I've not seen stuff repeated before, is it cos Dua just didn't give much inspiration?
I feel dissatisfied with this episode except for Fat Daddy, Che telling bad jokes on purpose and Dua Lipa singing…the rest was a real dud. How do you find a way to make Jerry unfunny?
It’s such an odd move after all Beavis buzz and with such a talented host. Just think of the sketches that got cut. Also, Che just dunking jokes on purpose…like he knew the show was in a space and just pushed it further towards the abyss.
I’ve loved SNL almost all my life, although I haven’t been watching as consistently as I had in the years before. I don’t even know the names of some of the cast members, and that’s a first I think. Maybe it’s the most cast members SNL has had in a single season, ever?
Anyways, there’s this Devon Walker guy, man. He really takes me out of it. My dude just cannot act, he cannot perform live at least. Reminds me a bit of Leslie Jones and how poorly she performed live and all the shit she got for it, and even she wasn’t as bad as him? I would just once want to be under the illusion that the man is acting, and not straight up reading cue cards.
Not the worst episode if the season, just not very good. The recording studio sketch bombed when they tried it in the Ana De Armas episode last year, what made them think it would work this time?
Kenan is such a superstar. In that obgyn sketch, he was so natural and funny. Licking his fingers, his mouth shape made me laugh out loud. Even Punkie Johnson came out laughing which means she was cracking up backstage.
This actually is so hilarious to me that he went on a “comedy is too woke” rant because his own standup is so not edgy or political?? So why does he care lol. Cancel culture is not gonna affect his standup material.
I guess Gen Z can't handle jokes like "What's the deal with airline food" because of the worries about peanut allergies. Or something.
And they can't handle his complaining about a car rental company taking but not keeping a reservation, because they are more likely to get an Uber. Cancel culture in action, cancelling car rental with more convenient alternatives!!!!!
Meanwhile Bob Sagat was telling Aristocrats versions until the day he died and this is what Drew Carey is doing on a network TV game show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOo_qtKWdnM But sure, nobody can do comedy because you automatically get cancelled if you say anything funny.
Seinfeld has the most bland and vanilla standup of any comedian. You don't need to swear every second to be funny but his material is just so safe and stupid and not in a good way. Why he was part of a sitcom with Larry's more edgy humor is a mystery
I was impressed by Dua's use of different American accents...I think she used a New York, a southern and a general American accent in different sketches. Other than that, it feels like a lot of these premises were recycled...I can't remember but didn't we see a female singers saying funny tag lines and the Dismukes/JJJ soul jingle sketch (which is itself just a riff off the older Bowen/Aidy version) this season?
I watched the Beavis and Butt-head sketch, which has gotten a lot of attention. I will grant the costumers and make-up artists kudos for their efforts. They are the best! But then once the characters talked, the words weren't so impressive or memorable. To me the dialogue has to fit to match. I'm not gonna just gawk at how uncanny the resemblance was. YMMV
You used to be able to count on 2 or 3 really funny sketches per episode and now you’re lucky if you get 1. It’s like they lost their teeth. By the time a funny idea gets through all the checks to see who is going to get mad about it they’ve lost anything funny they started with.
Just finished watching it in the UK and it was very “Meh”. One or two sketches were ok but the rest were poor and I ended up skipping the final sketch completely.
I thought the cold open bombed completely as well and I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael Longfellow is let go at the end of the season if that’s the level he can offer.
Dua was fine and certainly showed off some acting skills but the material let her down.
I think she did perfectly fine with what she was given. I'm not sure how she was supposed to make something memorable out of any of the characters that were written for her.
Upon further review, I actually really like the Good Morning Greenville sketch. When I watched it live something wasn't clicking for me, but upon rewatching it, it has some really great lines. "As Soon As Possible Rocky" is fantastic! Also, people who have no business commenting on a rap feud proceeding to comment on it anyway at length is a great premise and such an interesting way to handle the Kendrick/Drake beef.
I think the news commentary concept needs to be how they handle Kendrick/Drake since for many people the sketch is the first time they're hearing about it
Seinfeld will never go away. He was just in The Curb Finale. Now Unfrosted. Literally has been interviewed by everyone lately. It’s really crazy he won’t retire.
Seinfeld is NBC royalty. He’s not going anywhere.
What does it mean to “retire” when you’re worth hundreds of millions and already only do what you want to do?
She did enter a skit already laughing. I feel like the cast allows themselves to laugh way more freely in recent seasons, the newest seasons cast doing it the most often. Idk if Lorne is more lenient to it, or they’re all trying to take a page out of Jimmy Fallons’ book (I only say that because of his reputation, however I don’t agree with it being a bad thing. I feel that he perhaps laughed most often or more obviously than other cast members of that time/before him, but I feel like his laughter came genuinely and only when something was too hysterical for him to get through. He’s admitted he had the most trouble keeping it together when acting in scenes with Will Ferrell. I also noticed he and Horatio had trouble not laughing when they were in sketches together). Cast members today laugh over everything and nothing and don’t even seem worried about trying to hide it. I think they think it’s endearing (which it is, to me anyway, when it happens because it’s ACTUALLY uncontrollable), but they all seem to do it way too much over things that aren’t that funny. I hate it.
I feel that you have to earn the familiarity with the audience first before you just start breaking in a sketch.
If you are barely in any sketches and a new cast member it comes off as you being unprofessional. You can learn how to not break during a sketch. This cast should study legends of the show like Phil Hartman who was such a professional that he broke once out of 8 seasons of multiple sketches in every show.
Jimmy Fallon is/was the worst offender and is incredibly polorizing now because if you are cracking yoursef up all the time it is probably not funny.
Growing up in the 90’s it was a huge no no and only happened if a sketch or a line was uproariously funny (or you were Jimmy).
Now it’s like cast members have no problem with it and it, to your point, it’s like a weird signal that this is really funny and they’re having a good time.
Clearly a cast member breaking can take a sketch into the stratosphere (Beavis and Butthead recently, The Californians, Will Ferrell in the hot tub) but it only does so if it’s clear that It’s so fucking funny that a professional comedian can’t handle it despite their best efforts.
I turned it off halfway in. Maybe the worst episode Ive ever seen. And I’ve loved SNL for since the 80’s. I understand SNL’s format and I love how it changes over time. I’m not a prude. Gosling’s episode was fun, obviously. But this made me cringe.
i always try to like dua lipa but i just can’t. after episodes with wiig and gosling, this one felt a little boring and unfunny, but not the worst episode this season.
Does anyone know if the first half of the “Anomalous Man” sketch was based on a real book/play?
The premise of someone falling in love with the unknown writer of a play feels really familiar, but I can’t recall where I’ve encountered it before
Indeed. Here's a clip from the movie to set it in context.
Oof… Used to?? Then I do feel like Chloe could have left that out of her impersonation. - especially because she hit on so many other traits impeccably as you mentioned.
He’s an Australian YouTube twink turned indie pop star and model turned HBO actor Troye Sivan.
He was once played by an American actor who can't do an Australian accent.
So, this one was a bit rough. I believe Dua was doing interviews and album promotion all week which could have played into her lack of presence in sketches and Mikey Day completely missed writing night to appear as Jeff (Butt-Head) with Ryan Gosling at the LA premiere of The Fall Guy. And Mikey missing writing night is never a good thing for SNL. Although the Beavis and Butt-Head (Dean and Jeff) re-appearance was epic, so I'll let it slide. My favorite sketch was probably Fat Daddy OBGYN. So bizarre.
Not a lot of Sarah too surprisingly wasn't mentioned. She's been a well utilized cast option for quite a few episodes now & other than the pre-tape (I think she was the pigtroll writer?), *why was she so absent?* Chloe got some extra time too & I really thought in retrospect, that her, Sarah & Jerry could have done something fun together.
The fifth grade teacher having a relationship with their student story on weekend update happened one town away from me! I've been to the school that's happened at, pretty crazy to hear!
Everything Jerry’s done since THE SHOW sort of drives home the fact that Larry David was the comic genius behind the show. He’ll, there are writers from the show (Larry Charles) that have a better track record than Jerry.
He had good standup right after his show but yeah that thought occurred to me last night too. Larry David is the actual talent of that pair.
Seinfeld is rumored to be a jerk and also adverse to cursing. Something about that combo is creepy.
Yup, the movies sub recently added a rule against it but I believe that rule has been changed since. The tvshows sub has a rule against it now-https://ibb.co/pzYjd4R. It’s so fucking stupid.
Which I can live with even if I don’t always agree with that. But just having a blanket ban against cursing like the tvshows sub has would be ridiculous. Like you couldn’t even accurately quote some tv shows with that rule.
It's interesting how much we disagree on that. Every time we have a bombing episode like yesterday, my feeling is "at least Weekend Update will make me laugh." Last night's update was still pretty meh, but most weeks is better than 70% of sketches for me. it was probably still better than 70% of sketches yesterday since there weren't any very funny ones.
To the YouTubes! Need more to make heads or tails of this one. Most memorable moment (so far): Dua in that bath of white light, wind and fog banging her head to the end of her song. That was awesome.
I kinda like when they take an entire episode and just say “fuck it”, they can’t all be perfect episodes. After all it’s their job to experiment and be creative
Hands down Ayo Edibiri. She had some of the best performances in sketches this season. I feel like everyone can’t remember back further than three weeks ago.
Ryan gosling and how is this even a question?
The Bevis and butthead sketch alone has become a significant cultural moment. And it is worthy of that honour.
Ryan Gosling easily and it’s not close. He really brought something extra, if he were able to not break he has the chops to be a full time cast member. I was super impressed with him.
I thought Ryan Gosling did a great job of acting. In this episode, the acting was so wooden! Starting off with the cold open, with the exception of Kenan., of course.
Isn't breaking part of the appeal? It really sells the sketch, I don't think close encounters would be such a classic if he didn't break.
I'm a little skeptical that the breaking is always genuine.
Whether you liked it, disliked it, or were indifferent, she clearly enjoyed herself, and she committed, even if she’s not a technically great actor. I don’t expect her to become some sort of hosting legend 5-timer but she was decent. Her energy was good and she honestly tried.
She will probably be back either as host or musical guest for her next album. She’s promoted all of her albums on SNL to date.
I think Dua actually has a pretty offbeat sense of humor. She was musical guest for the holiday show in 2020 with Kristen Wiig, and she appeared in a sketch with Wiig and Bowen where she played an old-timey WW2 army nurse-type character and it was an unusual premise and execution but you could see she was having fun.
I actually was pleasantly surprised by this episode to be honest. I thought the weird sketches were a lot of fun, I hope they keep doing more outlandish stuff. Have a goodnight everybody!
Yeah I'm super surprised to see people didn't like this. It seemed like everybody was having a lot of fun. The last few episodes have been pretty experimental and weird, and I love it.
Just finished watching and felt like I had deja vu - sorry if I'm out of the loop and skits are recycled but I've been watching from UK a few years and it seemed much more noticeable. I feel dissatisfied with this episode except for Fat Daddy, Che telling bad jokes on purpose and Dua Lipa singing…the rest was a real dud. How do you find a way to make Jerry unfunny?
Most of the episode was a step past unfunny into straight up uncomfortable to watch
It’s such an odd move after all Beavis buzz and with such a talented host. Just think of the sketches that got cut. Also, Che just dunking jokes on purpose…like he knew the show was in a space and just pushed it further towards the abyss.
Did you see "Untoasted"? [He can do bad all by himself](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNhBVMrB2p0).
Was that sketch with the weird little dolls a paid advertisement?
I’ve loved SNL almost all my life, although I haven’t been watching as consistently as I had in the years before. I don’t even know the names of some of the cast members, and that’s a first I think. I thought "is this a rerun?"
Kenan is such a superstar. In that obgyn sketch, he was so natural and funny. Licking his fingers, his mouth shape made me laugh out loud. Even Punkie Johnson came out laughing which means she was cracking up backstage.
Seinfeld said you can't do comedy in 2024, and to hammer that point home, he went on Weekend Update and wasn't funny at all.
The opposite of bland vanilla comedy is not swearing. Also, a lot of very bland vanilla comedy from NYC's clubs is just comedians saying sweary stuff.
Good lord, that entire episode was worse than an open mic
We could have had Conan instead of this disgrace.
Huh?
I like to have Dua Lipa with hot man background dancers.
"Yes, I feel you, Alfonse"
I was impressed by Dua's use of different American accents...I think she used a New York, a southern and a general American accent in different sketches. Other than that, it feels like a lot of these premises were recycled...I can't remember but didn't we see a female singers saying funny tag lines and the Dismukes/JJJ soul jingle sketch (which is itself just a riff off the older Bowen/Aidy version) this season?
Yea not bad.
The little baby doll dicks had me laughing
[удалено]
Yup. Even painful to watch the next day. Waiting for a truly funny sketch now is like waiting for the Great Pumpkin.
[удалено]
Wow! Glad you really enjoyed about half. My score card had fewer than that.
We literally just had multiple golden sketches with Gosling like twenty days ago, relax
YMMV
And the Wiig episode was even better imo.
I honestly think Timothee Chalmet, Jason Momoa, Emma Stone, Adam Driver, Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney and Josh Brolin where also decent hosts
This is such a great SNL year. One for the record books.
And Ayo Edberdi was also good
YIKES!!!
The hosts are rarely the problem.
You used to be able to count on 2 or 3 really funny sketches per episode and now you’re lucky if you get 1. It’s like they lost their teeth. By the time a funny idea gets through all the checks to see who is going to get mad about it they’ve lost anything funny they started with.

Dua was fine and certainly showed off some acting skills but the material let her down.
Can you link the clip you’re referencing Longfellow in? Curious
He was in the cold open.
Longfellow is not as good as people seem to believe he is. I think they really just want him to be Norm.
I'd rather they keep Longfellow around than Devon Walker. Boggles my mind how they kept him beyond his first season.
Haven’t watched yet. Anything about Noem shooting her puppy?
Came up a few times.
Yes, her current dog was on Weekend Update and gave an interview lol
Writing was poor but Dua did well imo Almost felt like an audition to Hollywood, to show off her acting. Barely spoke in her own accent all show.
Reminded me of Colin Farrell years back. Host was game but the writing wasn’t there.
[удалено]
The trailer was a complete lie. She’s in the movie for 10 minutes.
She was. She played the evil agent he was chasing during the intro sequence.
[удалено]
I think she did perfectly fine with what she was given. I'm not sure how she was supposed to make something memorable out of any of the characters that were written for her.
Exactly. Harry Styles is an example of someone who at the time was not an actor, but still did great on the show as a dual host/musical guest role.
I’ve lived in Greenville for 20 years and they really nailed the “casual racist living in a bubble” vibe that a lot of people here have.
I think the news commentary concept needs to be how they handle Kendrick/Drake since for many people the sketch is the first time they're hearing about it
Yikes 2 weeks off, and that? ![gif](giphy|JSqa30dQmyobgeX10t|downsized)
Damn missed it last night and planned to tune in today.
True. Jerry is time less.
I'm pretty sure he's been in like 17 different promos the past week. Google Jerry Seinfeld 17 for more info.
The fall guy has done times 10 interviews
Might count as “interviewed by everyone lately” but he just had probably the second biggest part in Mulaney’s new Everybody’s In LA pilot too
Worst ep in years?! At least this will assure Punkie gets fired.
Punkie is pretty solid, don’t think she will be let go
She did enter a skit already laughing. I feel like the cast allows themselves to laugh way more freely in recent seasons, the newest seasons cast doing it the most often. Same.
Why what did Punkie do? I wasn’t watching
Nothing as usual. Hopefully she gets fired.
Ahhh gotcha
i always try to like dua lipa but i just can’t. after episodes with wiig and gosling, this one felt a little boring and unfunny, but not the worst episode this season.
The Anomalous Man was Salman Rushdie, right? Dude's dated more supermodels and actresses than Pete Davidson.
Maybe, but certainly a take on The Elephant Man, a movie starting John Hurt directed by David Lynch about a Victorian man with several deformities.
Does anyone know if the first half of the “Anomalous Man” sketch was based on a real book/play? The premise of someone falling in love with the unknown writer of a play feels really familiar, but I can’t recall where I’ve encountered it before
I think The Elephant Man
Indeed. Here's a clip from the movie to set it in context. [https://youtu.be/RiREn0B9-8U?si=FnFP64O\_1zvaVH8c](https://youtu.be/RiREn0B9-8U?si=FnFP64O_1zvaVH8c)
Yeah. That is it. And all I could think as I watched was “who thought this was funny”
Hunchback of Notre Dame?
chloe's jojo siwa impression was impeccable
This and big daddy are pretty much the only redeemable part of this episode
Does she weally not pronounce R sounds? I’ve never noticed that during her press interviews.
she did when she was younger, like during her first few seasons on dance moms
Oof… Used to?? Then I do feel like Chloe could have left that out of her impersonation. - especially because she hit on so many other traits impeccably as you mentioned.
Agreed! I appreciate she wasn’t afraid to try. The pre tape with Squirm was a slow burn. Also did she have a different accent in every sketch? Respect
Who was that boy standing next to Seinfeld at the end?
He’s an Australian YouTube twink turned indie pop star and model turned HBO actor Troye Sivan. He was once played by an American actor who can't do an Australian accent.
Also careful he may haunt your dreams now
And all 3 members of Boygenius!
He also played young wolverine in that Xmen movie and is technically the only other actor to play him in a live action movie which is random but funny
In other words, nobody… or at least, nobody most of us have heard of.
There was an [entire sketch](https://youtu.be/TzBvtMzWNL4?si=Zxdt97TfH2pJ9GFm) dedicated to him earlier this season
If you like pop music, you have. Because he’s put out some great albums
Imagine someone you could easily mistake for Bob Dylan or Willy Wonka, but in bright red underwear.
Troye Sivan
I still have the same question.
#Troye Sivan

So, this one was a bit rough. I believe Dua was doing interviews and album promotion all week which could have played into her lack of presence in sketches and Mikey Day completely missed writing night to appear as Jeff (Butt-Head) with Ryan Gosling at the LA premiere of The Fall Guy. Fat Daddy killed me
Great analysis!
Because her writing is terrible and gross? I dunno. Maybe for some reason that wasn't considered daring or desirable this week.
The fifth grade teacher having a relationship with their student story on weekend update happened one town away from me! I've been to the school that's happened at, pretty crazy to hear!
Also from WI. I was like noooo! Not again! Only making the news for super creepy weird stuff…
It might be one of the most insane and horrible things I've ever heard. I mean, what?
I wish Dakota Fanning or Christina Roci would host
I've got some great news for you https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/1acvs22/sketch_sorting_sunday_january_27_2024_dakota/
That is a different Dakota altogether
Jesus that Seinfeld weekend update bit was painful…
Everything Jerry’s done since THE SHOW sort of drives home the fact that Larry David was the comic genius behind the show. He’ll, there are writers from the show (Larry Charles) that have a better track record than Jerry.
He had good standup right after his show but yeah that thought occurred to me last night too. Larry David is the actual talent of that pair. Seinfeld is rumored to be a jerk and also adverse to cursing. Something about that combo is creepy.
Not to mention he dated a 17 year old high school student when he was 38.
Oh gross. He is against cursing? I hate that. I don’t curse and I hate it when people make it seem like a creepy or jerky thing to not swear.
Then I'm sure you're fucking pleased a lot of subs have been started to ban swearing.
Are subs doing that?? That’s insanity! I encourage everyone around me to curse twice as much, they can make up for my inability to swear lol
Yup, the movies sub recently added a rule against it but I believe that rule has been changed since. The tvshows sub has a rule against it now-https://ibb.co/pzYjd4R. It’s so fucking stupid.
We don't ban cussing. What we do ban is people using invectives against another one. Our goal is to keep this place warm and welcoming to all.
Which I can live with even if I don’t always agree with that. But just having a blanket ban against cursing like the tvshows sub has would be ridiculous. Like you couldn’t even accurately quote some tv shows with that rule.
Heh. We run into that problem all the time.
Seinfeld has been painful since the turn of the century
The Jojo bit had me dying
The first and last sketch were just repeats. 🙄
Why are some folks surprised Seinfield turned up on WU? WU has sexist and racist jokes every week.
I just wish WU was funny.
I feel WU is ok. These "I thought SNL would be too woke for Seinfield" comments make no sense to me.
After all it’s their job to experiment and be creative
not really experimenting or being creative when they just copy paste old sketches
Yeah but they’ve always done that, people like predictability
that’s fine but it’s not experimental or creative is what i’m saying
https://preview.redd.it/33huvza9jjyc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cba9f20c9c762939241a7703c7628c47dc86f675 What a weird timeline we’re in
who is that with Jerry?
![gif](giphy|a6cwMMQMTJ12iLk8IO|downsized) Remember this ep? It’s supposed to be Troye Sivan. The guy standing next to Jerry
No way lmao, I never would have known
“He’s gay famous, it’s different!”
Read this in Jerry’s voice in my head lol
Anyone care to hear my favorite number? *Sixteen trillion seven hundred twenty five million five hundred fifty thousand ONE hundred thirty-six!*
Who’s been the best host this season?
Nate Bargatze for me, not the best actor but the sketches were amazing.
Breaking is cheap comedy. Not necessarily good comedy.
Half of the fun of the now overused Close Encounters premise, too. But hey, it's Ryan Gosling so he usually makes it work
Ryan Gosling and Nate Bargatze. I'm not going to choose because they're two wildly different hosts.
I liked them both aaaaaand Ayo, Wiig and Josh Brolin.
Don't sell Wiig short! She was fantastic!
Wiig was great, best host of the season imo
Ryan Gosling easily and it’s not close. He really brought something extra, if he were able to not break he has the chops to be a full time cast member. I was super impressed with him.
I thought Ryan Gosling did a great job of acting. In this episode, the acting was so wooden! Starting off with the cold open, with the exception of Kenan., of course.
Isn't breaking part of the appeal? It really sells the sketch, I don't think close encounters would be such a classic if he didn't break. I'm a little skeptical that the breaking is always genuine.
It's that Mickey Mouse Club training.
He was the WORST host technically but because people like breaking, he became the best host.
People like earned breaking like Matt Foley & Debbie Downer.
Amen to this. I just don't get applauding, and therefore seeming to encourage more breaking. Real breaking is funny though...
Nate Bargatze
I AM CRACKING AT DUA’S WIGS
She said she was the one making them
Bananas means early bedtime!
I guess I'll remember this episode as the one Seinfeld appeared in. Not that he did the episode any justice, it's just kind of rare.
1st Look Chicago?
Did I miss that? Was that a reference?
It's the show that follows SNL in some markets. Maybe all?
Not going to say it was a "BAD" episode, but it was very weird and experimental. Some out there sketches!
Headcanon that the nurse is the daughter of her character in The Anomalous Man (and the nurse has an eyeball in her back from her dad’s side)
The last few episodes have been pretty experimental and weird, and I love it.
playing Ryan episode to forget everything we just seen
Yeah, the skits were… not good tonight
Devon and Punkie are super excited about it something
punkie and devon losing it at troye sivan jumping onstage
What sketch did he appear in?
he introduced dua for her musical number!
I somehow missed that!
rewind rewind!!
For all the criticism of Dua’s performance, one can only do so much with weak writing.
Dont forget that the host can veto sketches they don’t want to do and that they are involved (to some degree) in the selection process with Lorne
Oh Sarah Sherman made a sketch appearance, the Goodnights!
She was also in that 1897 London sketch too. She was under all that makeup
No Troast this episode! (unless I'm forgetting something)
Jerry Seinfeld and Troye Sivan both looked at each other like “I have no idea who you are”
😂
Spotted Chloe Troast!
Ugh now i have the jingle stuck in my head!!! They got me!
You must be getting looched up
