I guess, he might not know German as well as he is pretending. Wagen means vehicle, wagon, cart, car etc. Venture would be Wagnis, which is a totally different word. Nobody would even get, what a Einkaufswagnis is even supposed to mean. Are you taking the one ring to Lidl to destroy it inside the Brotschneidemaschine?
Wahrscheinlich ist er katholisch. Drei Vaterunser und zwei Ave Maria und die Verwechslung ist wie weggeblasen.
He's probably Catholic. Three lord's prayer and two Hail Marys and the mix-up is blown away.
Keine Ahnung, bin norddeutscher Atheist, das letzte Mal dass ich einen katholischen geistlichen gesehen habe war auf einer ökomenischen Hochzeit vor fast 10 Jahren.
Probably only the city states like their arrangement. I’m from Baden-Württemberg, where Baden and Württemberg would be more than fine being on their own.
Bavaria is the strange part of germany. Or better: one of the 15 strange parts of germany where the people talk wrong and the traditions are backwards.
there are 16 Federal states in germany. 15 are strange and backwards and the one I am from is the only normal one. Thats a joke about how every region of germany thinks bad about the other ones
Well that means you are from one of the city states or Saarland. No way any of the other states could find a common accepted normal between their regions.
It was the only state to reject the federal constitution, which garnered them some animosity.
Ironically, the bavarian politicians like to promote the constitution constantly nowadays...
Don't forget THW (federal agency for technical relief). They aren't as present as fire fighters and paramedics but without them heavily aiding the fire fighters my neighborhood would've been flooded
If only the Baby Boomers would share this opinion. The only thing making more work for firemen than the flood are people on flooded villages outside regensburg that refuse to leave their house so that they need to be taken care of the whole day. They just wont follow instructions because they know better as always.
Some amount of it got carried into Heidelberg here in Baden-Württemberg. The river is three meters above normal, some roads are blocked and cellars flooded.
Yeah, living between Mannheim an Heidelberg, we got some flooding as well, but our dam is holding up mostly. Some cellars are flooding due to ground water tho.
In the city i live in people protested the fire fighters being loud at night while putting out a fire next door that threatened to jump to their building. They even tried to sue the fire department into not using sirens.
Would need a German to confirm, but in Austria most firefighters are volunteers (outside of big cities). Which would makes this even better, in my opinion.
German here. Most villages and small towns only have a volunteer fire brigade (some instead have a conscripted one because there were no volunteers). You'll only find professional fire brigades in cities north of 80,000 inhabitants.
>You'll only find professional fire brigades in cities north of 80,000 inhabitants.
I know exception to that rule - Schönefeld.
But that's because they have an airport
German law states that its mandatory for cities with a population of above 100.000 to have a paid fire brigade. Everything south of 100.000 has a volunteer fire brigade.
And thats usually paid for by the fireman themselves. Outside of equipment and the mandatory food at longer emergencies, the cities (I know off) don't pay shit.
I can only talk for my city (~200.000k people), but you really have to be passionate to be a volunteer firefighter or you won't last long.
They really are ought to make it harder for you in a lot of ways e.g. stupid bureaucracy, equipment that is way to old or lacking, unthankfull officials that tell you you are not really needed as there is also a paid department (well they got more quiet after the floodings recently), favoritism with new equipment for some departments through the major, dangerously unorganized systems... Yeah, it really depends on the city how appreciated you are for what you do
That's where my parents live. And I can tell you many people on social media have the opposite opinion. Like: "Why can't they do something important." Or "How bad would it be to just walk through that little bit of water"
It might seem trivial but flood water can be very dangerous even in small amounts. Can be contaminated with sewage for example, or have pieces of hidden trash that can hurt people or even trap you if you try to walk through.
The fire fighters have protective equipment. This is actually a perfect situation for them to help people and doesn't require a complicated solution. Genius actually!
It gets a bit darker if you know that after the last flood in this county the regional government (CSU) actively refused to increase funds for prevention and help for exactly those scenarios.
So, yeah well spent tax money, but if more has been spent, as experts suggested, maybe less ppl would have died and less home would have been destroyed.
The firefighters are probably not paid employees.
In Germany, most fire brigades work on a voluntary basis. They are usually involved in such emergencies alongside the technical relief organisation (THW). The professional fire brigade, on the other hand, is deployed in the event of serious problems or when large machines are needed.
I don’t know if a lot of my fellow Americans have some kind of weird stigma about what Germany is or is not, but when I hear most ppl planning European vacations, Germany usually seems like an afterthought.
Ironically, when we were planning our first trip to Europe, our dates happened to align with Oktoberfest and I felt like that was something we couldn’t pass up. Visited Berlin, Munich, and Dachau. Countryside is beautiful, architecture is incredible, important world historical lessons, most ppl were friendly to us, food was delicious, beer was as well, just an overall extremely positive experience. 10/10, would return, danke 🤝
That IS a fun fact and I learned about the Beer Purity Law when we went on a brewery tour before Oktoberfest! In hindsight, 3 pints before we even got to the party wasn’t a great idea 🥴
The trust in the structural integrity of that carts even let official departments no doubt to legal action by transporting various sized people and cargo over there
Fun times. Went biking through some flooded fields on Sunday. I bet those ducks have never had a cyclist come straight at them across the water before.
The fact that this was not what they were there for makes it even better. The first woman is the one who asks the firefighters to help her get to the other side. xD
The thing is that the south of Germany is partly in catastrophe mode, partly in emergency mode and almost every firefighter, parts of the army and technical support is out helping. I bet he wanted to be nice to the blonde woman, but then realised that would be not very cool for the other people and just submitted to his fate as ferryman
Unfortunately, that's likely not just a clogged drain. Mayor parts of Germany have been hit by heavy rain these past few days, causing flooding. I'm assuming the whole sewage system is overloaded, so the water can't go anywhere, causing even small lower areas like the one in the video to fill up.
You Hit the Nail on the Head Pecisely Dude.
German volunteer Firefighter Here. That Video ist from Bavaria, which got about 100l/m³. One Firefighter there died Düring His duty. Redt in Peace. 🕯️
I heard of him. Really tragic. Rest in peace indeed. 🕯️
I have the utmost respect for what you and your colleagues do and the risks you take on the regular - especially as voluntary firefighters in times like these.
Thanks. We try, thats the best i can say to it.
Our Motto isnt misleading: Retten, Löschen, Bergen, Schützen.
We try to be save, but sadly, Things Like that are a risk we are glad to Take for Others.
We're enducated, schooled for These situations and have ingrained the necessary steps for Katastrophen in our head, to Help others.
I got better of Till now than the poor Devils in Bavaria.
Only four flooded Cellars, some washed Up Streets and Like 3 Hourse of Sandbag filling and 1 of laying 😅
You're willingly and regularly risking your lives, your health and your sanity. You're doing that without getting paid and you are far too often getting antagonised for it instead of receiving the thanks you've more than earned. And you still keep doing it. I really can't put into words (especially in English) how much respect I have for you guys and gals and how highly I think of all of you.
What you are currently dealing with might be not as bad as the situation in Bavaria, but it sounds exhausting in it's own right. So, sincerely, thank you for keeping it up!
Ground water level has been rising like crazy, we had it spraying out of the drains like fountains. My neighbours and I were busy keeping water out of the basement for three days

They've been "Add to cart"
No shipping Fee though **AND** Same day Shipping 😅
When the Feuerwehr does human trafficking 😭
"Dem Einkaufswagen hinzugefügt" fits even better. (Add to cart in german) Means "add to the shopping venture" 😅
That's what add to cart means :)
What do you think add to cart means in German?
"Zum Warenkorb hinzufügen"
rather "shopping wagon"
But cart already menas wagon, why bother translating?
I guess, he might not know German as well as he is pretending. Wagen means vehicle, wagon, cart, car etc. Venture would be Wagnis, which is a totally different word. Nobody would even get, what a Einkaufswagnis is even supposed to mean. Are you taking the one ring to Lidl to destroy it inside the Brotschneidemaschine?
Video was taken in Bavaria, Germany which is affected by heavy floods.
I recently moved to Germany from the states and I am constantly reminded that "Bavaria is not Germany".
It definitely isn't and they wouldn't want it any other way 😅

Wie wärs, wenn stattdessen die Magd ihn melkt?
And we definitely don’t take Bavarian flood refugees here in the north!
Wir lassen uns ohnehin lieber Schwimmhäute wachsen, als in den Norden zu flüchten
Gut, wir im Norden haben schon welche. Endlich passt ihr euch mal an die Zivilisation an!
And Franconia is neither bavaria or Germany
In Germany even the separatist regions have separatist regions
Probably only the city states like their arrangement. I’m from Baden-Württemberg, where Baden and Württemberg would be more than fine being on their own.
And then there is South Württemberg who would feel fine og being separated from all of them...
I can't even remember the one I live in

Well tbf the half of the people in the state i am from that lives behind *arbitrary Landmark* are even worse than the people from the other 15 states.
Und was ist mit Malle?
If they use any other greeting than the one from my local area they are automatically weird and treated with suspicion!
Well that means you are from one of the city states or Saarland. No way any of the other states could find a common accepted normal between their regions.
It was the only state to reject the federal constitution, which garnered them some animosity. Ironically, the bavarian politicians like to promote the constitution constantly nowadays...
absolutely it isn´t
Bavaria is a bit like Texas with Munich being like Austin
as I am from cologne I still wonder where this germany is anyway because we kind of don't belong either
Bavaria is, as we germans call it, “Innerdeutsches Ausland” (transl. Inner-German Abroad)
Yes, it's more like Austria (you know, the neighbor to the south)
Germany isnt germany. Sincerely an austrian (which isnt germany either, thankfully)
The AFD eagerly awaits your next export. 😭😭😭
They can take DJ Ötzi...also a failed artist
This time it is Switzerland's turn.
> Sincerely an austrian (which isnt germany either, thankfully) Not ***anymore***
For now
A fireman died Yesterday, another is still missing :(
Fire fighters and paramedics are the true heros.
Don't forget THW (federal agency for technical relief). They aren't as present as fire fighters and paramedics but without them heavily aiding the fire fighters my neighborhood would've been flooded

Yeah, living between Mannheim an Heidelberg, we got some flooding as well, but our dam is holding up mostly. Some cellars are flooding due to ground water tho.
Same here in Baden-Württemberg.
With zero sarcasm, i can say that that is well spent tax money.
Ain't nobody ever wrote a song called "Fuck the firefighters"
[Au contraire](https://youtu.be/7JkrJUAg8aI?si=m5_FYEy9N_Jm7NG5)
I didn't expect that. And now I'll need to explain to my family why I'm hopping around singing fuck the firedepartment
You merely want to catch 'em riding dirty.
„Rage against the engine“
It is in the lyrics but this is driving me mad like nothing has in a long time. r/angryupvote
Yet further proof that if you can imagine something, someone somewhere on the internet has already done it
In the city i live in people protested the fire fighters being loud at night while putting out a fire next door that threatened to jump to their building. They even tried to sue the fire department into not using sirens.
Wrong, there is a song called all firefighters are bastards 🤣
Would need a German to confirm, but in Austria most firefighters are volunteers (outside of big cities). Which would makes this even better, in my opinion.
German user here to confirm: it's the same for us. About 95% of German firefighters are volunteers.
But the employers get compensated for the salary they have to pay while the employees are on duty, that comes out of tax money.
Still WAY cheaper for city/state than a full time firefighter.
And if a community doesn't find enough volunteers, people get drafted to be compulsory firefighters. It has happened in a neighbouring village.
Same in Austria
Professionals are in towns with 20k+ inhabitants, not 80k+
By law, its a must at 100k+. Below its a can.
Fun part almost all firefighters in Germany are doing it for free as a hobby. Only the biggest citys got firefighters who are doing it as a Job.
To be fair - they are being well compensated with Feuerwehrmarmelade and Beer.
And thats usually paid for by the fireman themselves. Outside of equipment and the mandatory food at longer emergencies, the cities (I know off) don't pay shit. I can only talk for my city (~200.000k people), but you really have to be passionate to be a volunteer firefighter or you won't last long. Firefighters in Germany usually do that as a hobby and are not paid
Most firefighters in Germany (over 90%) work for free, so there wasn't even tax money spent.
They're volunteers If they'd be tax funded they'd insult the civilians and tell them to go f...cart themselves /s
They usually do this voluntarily, so most likely there was 0 tax money spent.
Not a lot of tax money involved here. Firefighters in germany are mostly volunteers.
Well it’s voluntary work

They are usually involved in such emergencies alongside the technical relief organisation (THW). The professional fire brigade, on the other hand, is deployed in the event of serious problems or when large machines are needed.
That's the sweetest and silliest vid I've seen in awhile. :) I'm assuming there were no other ways around that tunnel?
No it's an underpass undrr railway tracks.
There‘s heavy flooding in most of South Germany right now, so it probably looks similar at all alternative routes 🙈
Pfft they are just doing it for the hot gir.... nevermind. That was excellent, haha
My cynical brain tried the same thing. I got served, and I deserved it. Happy to be wrong.

Fun fact about the beer: we have a law in place to regulate beer, and it's older than many countries
That IS a fun fact and I learned about the Beer Purity Law when we went on a brewery tour before Oktoberfest! In hindsight, 3 pints before we even got to the party wasn’t a great idea 🥴
We call that "Vorglühen"
You drink before the party so you don't have to spend a fortune at the party. At least, that's the initial plan.

That’s so sweet and wholesome! They became added to the cart for a short ride.
But do they have their Einkaufswagen Führerschein?
And also their Personenbeförderungsschein? Looks like a 75€ fine and one point to me
Don't worry, every firefighter is Einkaufswagen certified
True heroes don't carry women in their arms, they just use a shopping cart.

Yes, that’s really sweet. The only sad thing is that a firefighter died in the flood disasters... 🫡🚒
Also a police officer died on Saturday because of a stabbing
Yes… that’s all a shame… And another 22 years old Firefighter died today
The fact that this was not what they were there for makes it even better. The first woman is the one who asks the firefighters to help her get to the other side. xD
