Wow. So if I have an engine I haven't started in a few years I could just fill it up until it's overflowing and let it sit overnight to get all the journal bearings etc all lubed up, then give it a few spins on just the starter motor, followed by a drain and correct fill before ignition.
Er, no. Fill it all up and drain it out, sure no harm no foul, so long as you don't mind buying x3 more oil than you needed. Running the starter however might be an issue if the engine gets hydrolocked anywhere.
Serial-dilution is the way to go, for maximum dilution per L of whatever used to dilute. That is to say, drain, fill, run, drain, fill, run, drain, fill. Sometimes a "chaser" can do wonders, but usually with coolant and tapwater. Not worth it with oil.
The dimples are guidelines. Overfilling is bad, but the top dimples marks where the manufacturer says you are good, not when it’s too full. They know some people will shoot for the top dimples, and a good number of those people will also overshoot. So they under set the top. They don’t want people sending their cars in for silly stuff like over filling the oil. The same goes with under, it’s not like as soon as you drop under it you are creaming your engine. They have it at a mark that will hopefully be addressed well before that happens

If the level increases however, that is bad. It's possibly a sign of fuel dilution, coolant contamination etc...
Just future reference the top dimple/hole/top of crosshatch etc. is the absolute maximum you want to run. Ideally between the two dimples is where you want to be.
When you overfill you submerge your crankshaft, the rotation will froth up the oil reducing librication. You are also creating a higher oil pressure which can blow out seals/gaskets.
Next time just be patient when filling. Don’t fill to manufacturers capacity right away. Do like a quart less. Check, then add if needed.
I belive you need alot more overfill than that to touch the crank. I would run it. Oil breather takes care of that litle extra or engine consumes probably a bit so that level wil drop soon.

BS, I always overfill by like half a centimeter over the top notch, never had any troubles.
Many mechanics and dealer service centers purposely overfill due flighty customers who may not come back in a timely fashion. What you say is true, but that is only the case with a major mistake or overfill.

Is it a fresh oil change? If so sometimes it can read a bit high before you do it's first start as the oil filter isn't filled yet.

I once ran my oil overfilled by 200ml for 2 years. Had it changed finally.
