A hotswap keychron is the gateway drug to this ridiculous rabbit hole.

GraveyardGuardian

Keychron are so good for the money. The GMMK Pro feels like an overpriced and overlubed brick next to it.

Omnithis

Gmmk pro was good at the time. A lot better options nowadays

hedonist222

Why? How come keychron and not something else.

Omnithis

Keychron is relatively cheap (Around 100 for a full kit I believe) and pretty easy to take apart and mod. However if you want a “entry level” custom keyboard, I bet you could snatch a good deal on some Qwertykeys kits on r/mechmarket

Miguel7501

You can't get better prices for boards that have QMK, hotswap, decent stock switches and are easy to mod. In addition to that, keychron doesn't miss. Every single one of their boards is among the best price/performance ratios, so I can recommend models that I've never heard kf.

New_Collection_4169

Actually it’s a Shortcut to endgame .

infinitevalence

Can confirm, I have built 7 keyboards and 2 numpads yet I still use my K4v2 as my daily. They Keychron was the second one I purchased after I decided I did not like the GMMK.

Nathaniel___B

for me it was a cheap hotswap 60% keyboard

Welmerer

i can confirm

notlatenotearly

What’s everyone’s problem with rabbit holes? They’re filled with rabbits. Who doesn’t like rabbits.

PotatoPowerPlug

Keychrons are still great for the money, but I usually rec Monsgeek keyboards for new user because how cheap and those are for aluminium board and generally pretty good. But I do prefer Keychrons over those since Keychron'e keyboards looks more elegant. The Q6 is still one of my favourite board even though I daily drive a much more expensive board.

[deleted]

Double shots on a FMK keychron is pretty awesome for the cash

Bitbatgaming

Hotswap is like crack it’s crazy

[deleted]

Because Keychron is (as said earlier in this thread) both the gateway drug and the 20% effort you put in to get 80% of the way to where ya wanna be in the hobby. You can get an extra 15-18% of the way towards a perfect 100 by fucking around with switches and types of keycaps that aren't GB or OoS, either. The truth is GBs and Keycult Customs exist more as a statement of wealth and fashion than anything truly functional, and much like fashion, why fork over an arm and a leg for North Face or Gucci when Carhartt does the job just fine? ...Except artisan keycaps. THOSE are cool.

kool-keys

>The truth is GBs and Keycult Customs exist more as a statement of wealth and fashion than anything truly functional Do you actually have an expensive custom board?

PotatoPowerPlug

I do and I can confirm that statement, my Keychron Q6 is around 80% interms of typing feels and functions Compare to my Angry Miao Am Compact touch. Unless you really care about well machine parts and novel function like wireless charging and touch bars, which most people don't, Keychrons are more then enough for most starters and even some vets in the hobby.

kool-keys

That's not why I asked the question. I have no disagreement with your statement regarding Keychron boards being good enough for most starters, or indeed most people. I'm typing this on a GMMK pro, and you know what? It's perfectly good enough. I asked the question because the person I was replying to is suggesting that there is essentially no difference between a $180 mass produced board and a far more expensive custom board like a Keycult, or a TGR, or a Geon. That you are just buying status and nothing more. I appreciate that the more you pay, the more you are into diminishing returns - which is the same for any hobby, whether it be hifi, cameras... you name it... but to suggest that a more expensive custom board is merely fashion and there's no point paying more is obviously nonsense. If you are asking if it's worth it... well that's a different discussion altogether.

I replaced my kbd67 with a keychron v6. Not disappointed. Can’t get via to work on Linux though. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Hah. Wouldn’t surprise me that it’d be a permission issue. Hadn’t even thought about that. Whoosh.

Man, I miss the days when it was okay to use root as your regular account. Coincidentally the same days when administration only required: Using a text editor to change config files Shell scripts in runlevel folders instead of systemd And lastly, basic understanding of LILO and laughing about hypothetical boondoggles like what would become grubcfg However, I don’t miss compiling software and getting almost completely done only to have make return an error about missing/incorrect dependencies. Rinse and repeat. Lol. God bless the programmers of apt and those who ordained to replace yum and urmpi with something actually useful. Nonetheless, enough of me waxing nostalgic. I’m no stranger to flashing. Already updated my v6. One of the first things I did. And the qmk tools are actually available for Linux. The qmk wiki outlines how to install the toolset using python. No gui though, pure CLI. Doesn’t bother me but, you can probably guess that I’m a bit old school. Random question: You know if I can bind AltGr on an ANSI board to a specific key in qmk or via? Or should I just program a layer with the characters I need? Can’t help being a grammar, punctuation, and spelling nazi most of the time. Personally, I can’t stand switching layouts and the cOmPoSe key is clunky.

[deleted]

Same though. But I’ve recently decided to live without Microsoft and google as much as humanly possible. Alrighty then. Looks like I’ll be making a custom layer.

mrpops2ko

look into the docker QMK guide part because thats super easy to compile QMK firmware with it and they have an execution script too. I made an alias so I could do it all by [simply typing keyboard](https://gyazo.com/0243fa7e992be773c4a809298412e282.gif). VIA is good but the real meat and potatoes are in QMK

[deleted]

Docker? You’re not wrong. At all. Via is nice and friendly. Great for noobs. Click and go! QMK is sCaRy to most users cause command line. 😆

Robot-duck

V6 with Oil Kings and cherry profile PBT caps are the perfect sound and feel to me. ~$160 and done, I leave it at work. I've tried other combo's at home but I always come back to that as athe best setup for me.

[deleted]

Oil king? Are they clicky? Tactile? Perhaps so loud each key press has the intensity of a sonic boom heard (but only once cause the eardrums rupture and is then only subsequently felt) at a distance of 2 meters? How bout stiffness? My fingers strike down upon each key just as the ice age asteroid pommeled Earth. Cherry/oem profile is clean cut in appearance. Works fine. Can’t knock it. Currently got SA profile. The vintage aesthetic coupled with the way each key perfectly cups each of my fingertips? Epic. If I could get the same profile as the keys on my 1940s Smith Corona though… Mmmm. I think I just came a little.

thechoochlyman

I just got a V6 this week, the first GOOD mechanical keyboard I've owned! Really glad I ended up with it, at first I was really wanting an aluminum frame but the V6 is really impressive and hefty as is. Swapped out the stock red switches which felt really *blah* to me for Kailh Navy switches. Just waiting for keycaps to arrive and I'll have my first custom build.

[deleted]

Lol. Feelsgood.exe amiright? I thought about the metal framed one too, but I couldn’t justify the added expense. Box navy switches? Is the click really that noticeable? People say it’s more pronounced than typical blues and greens. I put gateron greens with 150g springs in mine. Perfectly stiff for my lead sausage fingers not to inadvertently activate switches, but not a loud enough click. Almost wanna fab something that’ll recreate the same kinda loud thwack of a manual typewriter.

thechoochlyman

Nah, they're not really all that loud in my opinion. The keyboard itself is actually quieter than my stock Redragon with Blue switches. The navy switches have a lower-pitched click as well.

[deleted]

Damn. I actually removed the foam between the top plate and pcb on my v6. A lil louder, but nothing to write home about. 😞

Welmerer

the keychron v6 should work with via on linux. what is the issue?

[deleted]

Via always complains about something nonsensical. I’ll comment later when I’m not in the field.

GernBlanst0n

Weirdly, I started out on a Preonic because I was interested in the ability to program the arrangement of functional keys to my liking and it was smaller form factor. Anyway, now I'm over here lubing stabs and jamming zip & fit wherever there's room for it.

PotatoPowerPlug

I've been interested in keyboard since I first bought my Corsair k70 with cherry mx red in around 2012. But my first gateway drug into the hobby is the Vortex Poker 3 white with Cherry MX clear, still have that board and use it from time to time, yes the stabs are rattlely and Mx Clear isn't as good as newer switcha, but that board will always have a special place in my heart.

MetaWhirledPeas

The hobby is still in the early days, sorta, and r/mk is really a conglomeration of a bunch of different people: * People wanting to try their first "mechanical" keyboard * People wanting to discuss keyboard ASMR * People wanting to discuss cherry profile keycaps * People wanting to discuss other keycaps * People wanting to discuss vintage keyboards * People wanting to discuss ortholinear keyboards * People wanting to discuss split keyboards * People wanting to discuss macropads * People wanting to discuss the DIY aspects of the hobby There's plenty of crossover but there's also a lot of unnatural blending going on. Hence, you have people with 50+ keyboards talking to the new person who'd probably appreciate a Keychron.

Dastardly_eagle

I've got one. Anyone want to buy it lol

mobeen1497

To be fair, you can't expect the average joe to build it, most people don't have the time or the will to learn to build.

Flufymoose

k8 into a q2 for me

Omnithis

Yea mechanical keyboard are a scam honestly. Especially the aftermarket yikes

notlatenotearly

Yeah man rectangular pieces of cardboard (trading cards) are much less of a scam. $1000 pens aren’t a scam. Every niche hobby is the same man you dive in as much as you want. This hobby can be a week of your time and 100 bucks or thousands and years of time. It is what you make it.

Omnithis

I would say wooosh but honestly my joke wasn’t really good to begin with lol

Monteopalus319

Anyone reccomend a foss wireless gaming Full Keyboard other than a G915? Thanks
