I decided to check them out and after spending a bunch of money on their discography they helped me realize trad doom is not for me. Death Doom is amazing but these Sabbath-inspired bands are the colour beige. Bland to my ears. Oh, Â but the first album rules.Â
Nothing else they released seems as good as the first. Then again, I might try giving them another shot. I think I need to be in the right mood for them.Â
I'm typically fairly tolerant of different musical tastes but I've seen a few people on r/doommetal who don't like Candlemass and it fills me with indescribable rage.
Awesome, but every time I’ve seen them, when they play bewitched, they don’t do the doom stomp part, they cut out early after the solo. I was so fucking disappointed.

It’s not elitist to dislike something. Personally I don’t like their Messiah era either, even though I love EDM. Check out their last couple albums with Johan back on vocals. They aren’t EDM but they’re pretty solid.
They're not just heavy, they're fucking heavy. One of the best debut albums ever, and tons of Black Sabbath influence, hell, they've had constantly changing lineups just like Sabbath. I feel you've got to give their music your full undivided attention to really get into it though, like a lot of doom bands. It took me five listens to really take in everything Epicus had to offer.

Candlemass have been the muthafuckin GOAT for decades now, but they are still not coasting on their fame. The last 2 albums (2019 and 2022) are BADASS, and they put on a killer performance a few months ago when I saw them in Chicago. It was so loud I think it took me 2 days to get my hearing back fully!
Candlemass bores me. I've given them a couple of tries. I remember hearing some of this album in adolescence and feeling intrigued at the time, but I never bought the album back then. I think I'm just not in the right head-space to enjoy it. It's not that it's objectively bad, it just doesn't speak to me.
Kept bouncing off them for about a year. tried to listen to EDM and Nightfall with no luck, decided to give Tales of Creation a listen and it clicked, love em now, ToC is still my favorite album now that I’ve given their whole discog a thorough listen

Candlemass w/ Messiah Marcolin is one of the best all time. Without although still good just not the same imo.
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is their best work and not Messiah but apart from that yeah Messiah pre damn good

I’ve noticed the same thing about Trad Doom myself. I *LOVE* Death-Doom but the heavily Sabbath inflicted trad bands just don’t anything for me.

This album is so raw and heavy, it's freaking awesome.
I'm not really a fan of the doom genre, but I certainly respect their influence and that album is def a much loved classic.
