I shit on Lars a lot, and fuck it I'm about to do it again. I can't think of a single drummer in all of metal who comes close to his level of shit.
If you want to defend him, cool. Name a worse drummer in a major metal band.
Mostly his ability (lack of ability) on the drums. He also comes across as a pompous prick, trying to release the names of people who downloaded their albums to publicly shame them (you know, fans of his own band but whatever), things like that.
Ultimately though, it's not even that I dislike him. I just find his drumming basic and boring.
I was thinking me. The only instrument I play is viola and I’m out of practice. My actual songwriting is electronic, using an open-source sheet music program.
He is widely regarded as one of (if not THE) greatest singers in metal history. The dude has like a 4 1/2 octave vocal range. For reference, that's on par with Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, King Diamond, and Freddie fucking Mercury.
Music is definitely preference based, but basically everyone within and outside the industry is in agreeance that he is one of the most talented vocalists in the genre.
Say you don't like his voice, say you don't like Judas Priest, make fun of the leather, whatever you want. Saying he can't sing is kind of fucking insane and isn't even subjective. Dude can sing.
Rob would be a nobody without the bands talent. Michael jackson would write his own songs while producing his own instrumentals being crowned the king of pop worldwide.
Dio still had a voice 10x more powerful than robs, also had songs in multiple genres, [Dio at age 63](https://youtu.be/G4YgA0mSF0Q?t=17) so not in his prime.

According to Billy of Razorback Records it was me around 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure the recordings he heard though were the ones I made on a handheld tape recorder in my echo-y basement when I was 17, not the stuff I made with a real mic, and FL Studio, and Audacity about a year later. Those recordings are still rough, but at least there's an attempt at production there
