Metallica has the biggest casual metal fanbase out of any metal band. Ppl that don't listen to metal listen to Metallica. My 70 yr old mom hates metal but will listen to Metallica, well at least the hits.
Of course, because they're Metallica. Their first 4-5 albums made them legends. If you get most ppls take on this forum they will say they stopped being good after the mid 90s. Death Magnetic was ok, but it only gets a lot of plays b/c of their popularity. Again, Metallica attracts a huge casual fanbase.
Well, OP has a point because nothing Metallica has put out has ever come close to their first 5 albums. So in a way everything else they've put out gets overlooked, even though it still gets more plays than most metal bands, lol. Sad really.
Well one song doesn’t mean the album as a whole can’t be overlooked. Bit to mention it can be overlooked by a specific audience as well (in this case Reddit).
In comparison to Metallicas other albums it’s very overlooked. No one thinks of death magnetic when Metallica is mentioned, and the “common” opinion is usually that Metallica stopped being great after the black album. As the other person said, metallica has a HUGE amount of casual listeners and I guarantee you that almost every person you’ll come by, metalhead or not knows/has heard at least a few metallica songs. Enter Sandman alone has way more streams than that entire album. 140M is such a small fraction of Metallicas streams, and also one song doesn’t make an album. So, in terms of Metallicas discography, and between metalheads in general, the album is overlooked and rarely talked about.
The title is literally “overlooked albums by popular bands”, and it is in fact very overlooked by most people.
Yeah but one of the songs on that album is among the top most listened to songs in Metallica’s discography- not sure how anyone could claim the album is overlooked
I really wanted to like DM when it came out. For a while, I convinced myself that I did, but I just can’t get into it. Production issues are well-documented, but even beyond that all the songs seemed kinda patched together rather than being cohesive. They are also all 2-3 minutes too long, and I love me some long songs, but here it mostly comes across as fat that needed to be trimmed.
Agreed. There are some cool ideas and good riffs but the production is terrible, the songs are too long and wear you out, there are some downright bad songs and plenty of filler, and the solos are all pretty terrible. The worst offense is - as bad as St. Anger was - at least Metallica was doing their own thing for much of the post-Black Album period. Death Magnetic felt like extremely generic fan service. The Day That Never Comes is an off brand version of the epic heavy ballads like Sanitarium and One (almost like a ripoff) and the bookended fast songs are trying really hard to mirror the earlier albums too. It all feels very uninspired and like something that was cooked up in a focus group to win back their fans.
I think everyone just wanted to like it because of how horrible the band had been for a while before, but it wasn’t anywhere near the comeback we all wanted
Youthinasia and The World Needs a Hero- Megadeth. Less so on Youthinasia. I think many enjoy it but not as much as other albums. TWNAH ges a lot of hate, but I've always enjoyed it.
I didn't like TSHF for the longest time but I now regard it as a solid album. Took forever for certain songs to catch on. Kick the Chair is still one of my favs to this day.
I love Youthanasia, it’s easily my favorite album of megadeth, and i also didn’t understand the TWNAN, it’s strange for me after listening to their whole 1986-97 discography and hearing that
Some are underrated, some overlooked, don't assume both lol.
Black Sabbath - Headless Cross, Tyr, The Eternal Idol, Cross Purposes, Born Again
Iron Maiden - The X Factor, Virtual XI, Dance of Death
Mercyful Fate - Into the Unknown
King Diamond - Voodoo
Angel Witch - Screamin & Bleedin, Frontal Assault
Behemoth - Grom
Burzum - Umskiptar
Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine
Darkthrone - FOAD
Dio - Strange Highways
I got tired that's all you're getting.
I listened to the remastered Sabbath albums and just couldn't get myself to care for Tyr.
Headless Cross was a banger, The Eternal Idol is my favorite Tony Martin album, Cross Purposes was decent, and Born Again has some really good songs
Surprised to hear that about Tyr, but cheers to everything else you said. I'm definitely not deluded to think those are the top tier Sabbath records or anything, but definitely both overlooked and underrated for how good they are. I forgot to include Seventh Star as well.
Agree on Dance of Death and a few others you name for sure.
And I’ve always argued that if XFactor had been released under a different band name, it would be hailed quite highly and viewed in an entirely different light. It blows No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark straight out of the water.
Endgame
Overshadowed by the mighty Rust in Peace, Peace Sells and a few other earlier gems to fans of the genre therefore never really getting the proper traction it rightfully deserves.

It’s a top ten death metal album for me. It’s weird to me how it never gets talked about, most Amorphis fans gravitate towards Tales From the Thousand Lakes or their newer stuff, but I think KI is their best work.
I think Amorphis in general isn't talked about enough. They aren't underground or anything, but I've never met another Amorphis fan in real life and I rarely hear them get talked about on social media.
Get Some - Snot (if you like thrash and never heard of snot, you're in for a treat)
Iowa - Slipknot (I'm aware it's a weird mention but the transition from the first album put a lot of people off)
Dead again - Type O Negative (shame for Pete's death but they felt like they were coming into a new era)
War Party - GWAR (GWAR is pretty underrated in general)
Alien - Strapping Young Lad
Living as Ghosts With Buildings as Teeth - Rishloo
Horror Show - Iced Earth
I stuck it in because it gets downplayed when Devin started doing the band/project. Don't get me wrong, he's made himself into an artist but sometimes you just want something a bit raw.
Mayhem’s Chimera. Maniac has always been my favorite Mayhem vocalist, so that’s part of the reason, but musically the album is also great. It’s in my top 3 Mayhem releases.
Nightwish - Angels Fall First. Sure, Tuomas's vocals are kinda rough but it has a lot going for it. Elvenpath and Nightingale are genuine bangers, Lappi is a great suite, and it's raw in a good way. I love synth Nightwish and there's good stuff here.
**Nation** is one of the best albums from Sepultura's Derrick Green era and it seems like it's been completely forgotten about.
It's straight Groove Metal with just a hint of those then-popular Nu Metal tendencies (which were much more flagrant on Roots and Against ) and of course plenty of tribal influence.
I feel like virtually every track is a banger and as a complete album, it has a great flow. It's one I revisit a lot, arguably as much as Beneath the Remains or Chaos AD.
This album gets way more credit than it deserves. It has some good songs but the mix is absolute rubbish. If I would pick an underrated metallica album it would be Garage inc.
Brotherhood of the snake is commonly ranked low in testament's discography, but I personally love the album. Not a single bad song and constant energy throughout the album
i think megadeth’s Cryptic Writings and Youthanasia are shadowed behind the success of Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction, these albums are awesome
Immortal - Blizzard Beasts is amazing, but people never mention it that I’ve seen. Just Holocaust, Heart of Winter, Sons is what people talk about.
Gorgoroth - Antichrist, Quantos, Bestialis. People only talk about Pentagram and Sign of Hell.
Darkthrone - where is the love for Ravishing Grimness?

It’s funny seeing this be called underrated or overlooked when one of the songs has 140,000,000 listens on Spotify lmao
Metallica has the biggest casual metal fanbase out of any metal band. Ppl that don't listen to metal listen to Metallica. My 70 yr old mom hates metal but will listen to Metallica, well at least the hits.
Death Magnetic alone probably has more listens than 90% of other band’s entire discographies lol
Right I’m just laughing at the fact they’re being brought up in an underrated/overlooked thread
Well, OP has a point because nothing Metallica has put out has ever come close to their first 5 albums. So in a way everything else they've put out gets overlooked, even though it still gets more plays than most metal bands, lol. Sad really.
I’m just pointing out the irony of implying a song with 140,000,000 listens would qualify as “overlooked” by any metric
Oh I know, it is ironic to think that something like that can be overrated, but it just shows the divide in Metallica fans.
Well one song doesn’t mean the album as a whole can’t be overlooked. Bit to mention it can be overlooked by a specific audience as well (in this case Reddit).
I feel like you still don’t get the point
What’s the point

Yeah but one of the songs on that album is among the top most listened to songs in Metallica’s discography- not sure how anyone could claim the album is overlooked
Metallica is by far the biggest metal band and one of the biggest bands in the world (from any genre). Can’t really go by pure listens here.
I really wanted to like DM when it came out. For a while, I convinced myself that I did, but I just can’t get into it. Production issues are well-documented, but even beyond that all the songs seemed kinda patched together rather than being cohesive. Youthanasia is awesome but the world needs a hero is cringe imo.
Same. I can't stand TWNAH at all
I think that The System Has Failed is a better example
I didn't like TSHF for the longest time but I now regard it as a solid album. Took forever for certain songs to catch on. Kick the Chair is still one of my favs to this day.

Gonna disagree with you there, I really like Endgame and their last 2 albums
Yeah, I get that, but I still like it. Part of it's charm in it's own dumb way.
I love Youthanasia, it’s easily my favorite album of megadeth, and i also didn’t understand the TWNAN, it’s strange for me after listening to their whole 1986-97 discography and hearing that

Hell yeah
Sleepwalker >>>>
“Washington Is Next!” is one of my favorite Megadeth songs of all time
I love that one as well
Lol I thought it said United abortions
Some are underrated, some overlooked, don't assume both lol. Absolutely. X Factor is incredible.
Umskiptar is amazing and far more better than Dauði Baldurs
Absolutely.
Grom is the best Behemoth album. Period.
Preach! Never been a big fan of theirs after that.
A looot of people got into cof bc of nymphetamine, if anything i would say manticore, i don't like It a lot but I think Is the least talked about
That one wasn't for underlooked, but underrated. It's a pretty critically lambasted album now.
Endgame Overshadowed by the mighty Rust in Peace, Peace Sells and a few other earlier gems to fans of the genre therefore never really getting the proper traction it rightfully deserves. https://preview.redd.it/3oeizz3b7t5d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf0e10928a2b470f5a867e9aff80dcf9dcb39c60
44 Minutes goes so hard!
This day we Fight is my favourite Megadeth song
I considered listing some specifics, and that’s exactly the direction I was heading. 🤘🏼🫵🏼
[удалено]
Megadeth slaps bruh on god
Legit might be their heaviest album too
This Day We Fight is a hell of an album opener.
every album is overshadowed by Rust in Peace imo
Mob rules by black Sabbath
Load by Metallica and Cryptic Writings by Megadeth
Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus Edge of Sanity - Unorthodox Katatonia - Discouraged Ones Asphyx - Asphyx Drudkh - The Swan Road
The Karelian Isthmus is a great album.
Discouraged Ones is absolutely fantastic
World Painted Blood- Slayer , and In War and Pieces - Sodom
A matter of life and death - Iron Maiden
Dance of Death
This is my favorite post-reunion album of theirs.
Diabolus. Much maligned but IDGAF. That album fucks so hard.
Death's Head was one of the first riffs I learned in drop tuning. Certified banger.
One of my favorite Slayer tracks!
Lamb of God - Wrath
Slayer-God Hates Us All
Harmony Corruption - Napalm Death
God, I fucking love this album!!! To be fair, there aren't any of theirs I don't....
Blind by Corrosion of Conformity. Karl Agell was a decent singer. I like Peppers voice better, but that album has some good songs on it.
My Arms, Your Hearse. In my opinion, the second best Opeth album.
agree
Helmet - Aftertaste Because Meantime and Betty were so amazing, this one got passed over
As a huge Metallica fan, not this album
in metal terms death magnetic is NOT underrated. metallica fan wise, maybe
I LOVE DEATH MAGNETIC RAHH
Dance of death and the book of souls by iron maiden
S&M2 - Metallica.
Get Some - Snot (if you like thrash and never heard of snot, you're in for a treat) Iowa - Slipknot (I'm aware it's a weird mention but the transition from the first album put a lot of people off) Dead again - Type O Negative (shame for Pete's death but they felt like they were coming into a new era) War Party - GWAR (GWAR is pretty underrated in general) Alien - Strapping Young Lad Living as Ghosts With Buildings as Teeth - Rishloo Horror Show - Iced Earth
Alien is probably my favorite SYL album. The Synchestra album from DTB was the perfect complimentary album for it too
I stuck it in because it gets downplayed when Devin started doing the band/project. Don't get me wrong, he's made himself into an artist but sometimes you just want something a bit raw.
Yea. I love Heavy Deavy's more recent stuff, but do I miss the days of pure aggression and chaos, lol. Maybe one day. But probably not
Aye, Addicted! was a tour de force and probably the last vestige of that particular chapter.
Other thing to note is that the Devin screech feels oddly specific. Not sure you can do that for decades without something going wrong.
Mayhem’s Chimera. Maniac has always been my favorite Mayhem vocalist, so that’s part of the reason, but musically the album is also great. It’s in my top 3 Mayhem releases.
Stop liking the cat vocalist
Nightwish - Angels Fall First. Sure, Tuomas's vocals are kinda rough but it has a lot going for it. Elvenpath and Nightingale are genuine bangers, Lappi is a great suite, and it's raw in a good way. I love synth Nightwish and there's good stuff here.
One of my favorite nightwish albums, has a lot of magic to it
Anathema - Weather Systems
The cover looks like a hairy pussy
What women have you been with who's pussy looks like a coffin????
bro is fucking death's gf
lol you got me
Skid Row, Subhuman Race.

Overkill - I Hear Black
Rebel meets rebel - The pantera brothers with David Allan coe. Dave Grohl’s Probot record. Anthrax - I’m the Man.
Scorpion - Megadeth, the chorus is so catchy
The more things change by Machine Head, literally no one ever talks about it and it's an 11/10
The formation of damnation by testament. It is a late era album by them but it ended up being one of their best ever.
This album gets way more credit than it deserves. It has some good songs but the mix is absolute rubbish. If I would pick an underrated metallica album it would be Garage inc.
Both Tim "Ripper" Owens era Iced Earth albums ( Framing Armageddon and The Glorious Burden). Both albums contain vocally and musically amazing songs.
Man, Ripper can't catch a break 😭
He's such an underrated singer,ffs.
Brotherhood of the snake is commonly ranked low in testament's discography, but I personally love the album. Not a single bad song and constant energy throughout the album
Asylum by Disturbed. Imo their best album. Whole by SoiL. Coma Ecliptic by BTBAM. Less heavy than their other work, but solid. Dystopia by Megadeth.
i think megadeth’s Cryptic Writings and Youthanasia are shadowed behind the success of Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction, these albums are awesome
