I listen now again to Spiritual Healing songs. It would a metal crime if it is voted Death's worst album. It includes so many awesome tracks, this is true technical progressive death metal. Many variations in tempo, riffs, outbreaks, melodic solos, Chuck's best chilling screams, simple but great thought-provoking lyrics. Living Monstrosity, Genetic Reconstruction, Low Life, the title cut, every moment is a highlight, perhaps with the exception of Killing Spree.
Disgustingly underrated album. Scream Bloody Gore, to me, is exactly what you're describing. They hadn't found their footing yet and it's just underwhelming in its own right.
Yes!!! Finally someone said it. While I love everything post-Human, Spiritual Healing might actually be my favourite Death album. It’s still old-school death metal, its got James Murphy, amazing solo stuff there.
Scream Bloody Gore is the worst for me, but in this case it doesn’t mean bad. Just less brilliant.
Not to mention, it has one of the most hilariously accurate and realistic album covers ever. All their other album covers are pretty much fantasy, but goddamn the album could pass for an actual photograph of a televangelist like Kenneth Copeland exercising demons with the followers possessed with "the holy spirit" LOL
i love that album but i really think the drums were holding it back a bit. the drumming isn’t “bad” but it feels like while the rest of the band was getting more technical and progressive while the drumming was stuck in the SBG and leprosy era. if that makes sense lol
i agree, when i saw this template i was wondering about what the “worst” death record would be and i also thought Spiritual Healing despite me thinking it’s probably still at least an 8/10. I love Scream Bloody Gore for its rawness, and Leprosy, musically is a direct evolution of that sound. Spiritual Healing you could argue is also an evolution from Leprosy but it’s right before the huge leap that Human makes so it sits in an awkward spot in a discography that’s just too good as a whole.
To make up for thinking Spiritual Healing is the “worst”, id also vouch for it to be most underrated, lol
I feel we really got this one wrong. Spiritual Healing goes hard, has tons of great riffs, memorable songs and their playing is about as tight as the bloody Beatles. Human or Bloody Gore in my opinion for the weakest.
I Knew "Spiritaul Healing" is gonna end up winning the worst album by death not many people like early death stuff compare to their late stuff tech / prog era death
I mean, to be fair, the only reason I like that album is because it's the magnum opus of one of the greatest metal composers of all time. Besides that, though, what is there to like?
Controversial take, but I'm not actually opposed to it.
My vote is Spiritual Healing personally, as I just never got into it as much as the others. But agree, their discog is so balanced that it's hard to pick.
On the other hand what to chose tho? Death has a perfect discography, any album is a bad choice for the worst lol. Think SH deserves it just based on the reason that it's a transitional album, that makes it "the worst" by Death standards lmao.
I don't think it is really traditional. It features Death's unique musicianship, and marks the band's transition to melodic and progressive death metal. Less chaotic and raw than Leprosy and Scream bloody and more varying than Human and Individual (these are mostly heavy and slower), it's great overall, riffs, tempos, drumming, Chuck's screams, solos, heavy and fast in equal parts. The title cut, Low Life, Defensive Personalities, Altering the Future etc. all gems. No song on their last album (Painkiller cover excepted) is as half as memorable as SH songs. On metal-archives their last two albums have the lowest scores, SH ranking fourth (90%).
It's most likely gonna be leprosy , Human , Individual Thought Patterns or The Sound Of Perseverance for underrated
death mega fans hate earlier death except for leprosy it seems
It just feels rather juvenile next to anything else they did. Amazing album amazing debut immensely important. I just don’t see how it can possibly stand up to subsequent releases. It makes me sad to see spiritual healing up top I fucking love that album
You hear good riffs on SBG more often than on Symbolic or Spiritual Healing. All of those albums however have the problem of the first half of the song essentially repeating in the second
Scream Bloody Gore.
Of course it is a first album in a genre, very influential, has great historic value, bla-bla-bla. However being first does not add to its quality. It is way too monotonous and flat. All other albums are better because Chuck improved greatly as a musician after debut.
I'm realizing based on these comments I don't fit in on this sub at all lmao, I can't believe this sub likes prog Death more than SBG/Leprosy. Blows my mind.
Nah, i definitely think every Death record sounds like an evolution of the one before it but SBG is just pure metal, non stop thrashing and evil riffs. I love the sound of Chucks vocals on it and the screams on Evil Dead and the title track tie the whole thing together like a little fucked up bow made of human tendons. Every other Death record could be appreciated by general music nerds, but SBG is for the riff junkies pounding beers in a weed smoke filled basement, banging their heads while the record spins on a shitty old turn table. It’s vintage and untouchable.
Spiritual Healing. It might be my favorite album and I might be wearing the shirt but its not their best overall.
PS If we can just put the only Control Denied album on there so we dont have to do this, that would be best.
Thank you.
It's not a Death album to me. It's a Control Deinied album. It was meant to be one. It sounds nothing like Death's previous work, and it should have been a Control Deinied album.
Bro people saying Spiritual Healing 😭😭
For me Scream Bloody Gore is worst. Not as progressive and weaker lyrics. Even though for me there is not any Death album that’s worst than 9/10
Spiritual Healing and Leprosy are Death's best moments IMO. Every song on those albums stands out. Tracks on Human and Individual Thought Patterns get repetitive.
Casting a vote for Scream Bloody Gore. Still pretty good and I certainly overplayed it at some point, but worst considering that Death only kept getting better from there
Scream Bloody Gore.
Granted, I have a lot of sentimental love for it. It was my introduction to death metal in general, and I love the whole grimy, sloppy, stanky, recorded-in-someone's-garage vibe of the whole thing. But it's their least-great album.
personally i’d say sound of perseverance. the vocals and guitar tone really get to me but i feel like the songwriting outweighs it. overall i still think sop is the weakest
Man, i must be the weirdest BG fan. I only discovered them via their Twist in the Myth album. Played Straight Through the Mirror & Fly on numerous repeats. My respect & appreciation grew deeper with A Night at the Opera. Without these two albums, i wouldn't be into BG than what I am now.
Nightfall is a solid album but i dont think that album would have roped me in as much as Twist & ANATO.
Spiritual Healing, is the REAL transition from early DEATH > more mature lyrical content/progressive transitions/Murphy/Chuck slay on this record. Human, gets the nod by most, for the “transition” album. Idts. It’s SH. and it shouldn’t be deemed their least/best output - on that account.
The "worst" album is Scream Bloody Gore. It's unpolished and unrefined compared to later works. It basically sounds like straight thrash with harsher vocals. Every chorus is basically the song title said multiple times. There's no real flavor to the drum work. Solos are rudimentary. Lyrical content is repetitive.
And that’s why it’s so sick man. It feels likes the essence of two 17 year olds who like horror movies coming together and recording a basic yet killer album. It might be technically very simple, but the energy and atmosphere is on point, which a lot of metal fails to capture imo.
I appreciate you giving me a new frame of mind to go back to that album with and try to get something out of it. For now, though, I gotta agree with that dude.
TSOP, now before yall bring out the pitchforks and shun me into oblivion, the flow of the album is what keeps it from being one of their best. There’s many slower sections and moments of silence that just feel out of place
I can’t choose. TSOP. There. That’s what I’m going with. Even though no such category exists for this band. There is no worst or best in my opinion. Just the progression towards perfection.
I can’t help but say that I think that Invincible Shield should take the place of Demolition. There’s one redeeming track on that album and truthfully as late career as Judas Priest is, it shouldn’t have been made. This isn’t how I want to remember them.
St Anger isn’t the worst, tune out the ping ping snare and the structure and songs are pretty darn good. It’s got heavier stuff than Black album and stuff after it as well. As a kid I had it on my portable cd player, it gave me closer vibes to Justice due to the heavier elements added. Albeit I know Lars can’t really do the double bass anymore
Unless you think Fragile Art of Existence is a Death album, which it literally is not, then TSOP is their swansong. A swansong is the last piece of art released before death or retirement. Your opinion of quality has no bearing on that whatsoever.
Maybe your thinking of magnum opus?

Spirtual Healing, by no means even a bad album, just lacking the sauce compared to the other stuff they released
And that’s my favorite track on SH. Killing Spree. And SH is my favorite DEATH album. So you never know.
All their other album covers are pretty much fantasy, but goddamn the album could pass for an actual photograph of a televangelist like Kenneth Copeland exercising demons with the followers possessed with "the holy spirit" LOL
Yeah, we all know the answer to this one. Do we even need to go a whole day to get to the underrated one?
ITP!!!!
That's what I was thinking.
Yup, i figured
This is incorrect
How?
sorry I thought you were discussing the worst/ least best. I have now read your comment properly and agree that ITP is their most underrated
Lol no worries mate
Fuck you
i love that album but i really think the drums were holding it back a bit. the drumming isn’t “bad” but it feels like while the rest of the band was getting more technical and progressive while the drumming was stuck in the SBG and leprosy era. if that makes sense lol
i agree, when i saw this template i was wondering about what the “worst” death record would be and i also thought Spiritual Healing despite me thinking it’s probably still at least an 8/10. To make up for thinking Spiritual Healing is the “worst”, id also vouch for it to be most underrated, lol
This is the correct answer. Its their “least best” album
If Spirtual wins worst than the only option for underrated is ITP.
Sure
I feel we really got this one wrong. Spiritual Healing goes hard, has tons of great riffs, memorable songs and their playing is about as tight as the bloody Beatles. Human or Bloody Gore in my opinion for the weakest.
It will also win underrated album.
Honestly I agree, I think that’s their weakest album
Agree. Not as memorable, and not music sauce or flare
No sir, I’d say it goes to underrated
I agree it’s not terrible but there’s also not much memorable about it either.
I Knew "Spiritaul Healing" is gonna end up winning the worst album by death not many people like early death stuff compare to their late stuff tech / prog era death
Huh???
Death fans please remember that worst =/= bad, thank you 🙏
Literally. They gave 6 albums… many would call it a perfect discography. My least favourite is still a 4/5 for me. We have to choose SOMETHING.
7*
Oops, that was a typo, thanks for the correction
LOL
Leave it blank. Death’s discography deserves it.
They do NOT deserve it when TSOP exists
Bro got bitch ears
Don't know how anyone can like it tbh
I mean, to be fair, the only reason I like that album is because it's the magnum opus of one of the greatest metal composers of all time. Besides that, though, what is there to like?
Bait used to be believable lmfao
True, it's only their most popular album because people listen to it ironically.
this but to you
Crazy how opinions are subjective yet you produced the only objectively wrong opinion
TSOP might be my favorite besides Symbolic lmaoooo
Yo I just started to get into Shadows Fall they aren’t too shabby. I love the guitar work especially, never see anyone with that flair in here 🫡
Appreciate it! They are awesome. So is VH! Got into them through my parents and I probably know more of their stuff than they do now lol
Yeah no one even compares to EVH on guitar. However I do feel The War Within is slightly better than The Art Of Balance so far from what I’ve heard
Worst take i have seen in a while
yeah that album should’ve taken Best category
tbh i felt this way for years and for some reason just a couple months ago it clicked for me so idk what it is
Nice bait
Why would it be bait ? That album sucks ass
Death fanboys smh
No it doesn't

If we vote spiritual healing for worst we also have to vote it for underrated
Any person voting Spiritual Healing as worst Death album needs spiritual /mental healing
👍🏻
What do you suggest instead, then?
The Sound of Perseverance, although Death had produced no bad album.
Controversial take, but I'm not actually opposed to it. My vote is Spiritual Healing personally, as I just never got into it as much as the others. But agree, their discog is so balanced that it's hard to pick.
I personally never got into Sound of Perseverance. It sounds like an uninspiring rehash of the 2 previous albums.
On metal-archives their last two albums have the lowest scores, SH ranking fourth (90%).
Well, I said "transitional", not "traditional" hehe.
My thoughts exactly
It's most likely gonna be leprosy , Human , Individual Thought Patterns or The Sound Of Perseverance for underrated death mega fans hate earlier death except for leprosy it seems
I was thinking the same
![gif](giphy|l396VuOSJR12JBCWQ)
That one's actually a good Meshuggah album
SBG
It just feels rather juvenile next to anything else they did. Amazing album amazing debut immensely important. I just don’t see how it can possibly stand up to subsequent releases. It makes me sad to see spiritual healing up top I fucking love that album
You hear good riffs on SBG more often than on Symbolic or Spiritual Healing. All of those albums however have the problem of the first half of the song essentially repeating in the second
That one is the best tho
It doesn't matter what album I choose. It will get downvoted to hell.
Spiritual Healing. It’s still a good album but it’s weaker than the rest of their discography.
pretty much yeah
Scream Bloody Gore. Of course it is a first album in a genre, very influential, has great historic value, bla-bla-bla. However being first does not add to its quality. It is way too monotonous and flat. All other albums are better because Chuck improved greatly as a musician after debut.
That's literally the best album. Best riffs Death ever wrote. Sure it's a bit immature, but it adds to the charm
I'm realizing based on these comments I don't fit in on this sub at all lmao, I can't believe this sub likes prog Death more than SBG/Leprosy. Blows my mind.
Leprosy is my favorite album actually, SBG has a lot of killer riffs, but only on Leprosy Chuck learned to combine great riffs into great songs.
For first album to be thr best band needs to decline after it, I don't think it ever happened to Death.
It definitely did lol
that's exactly what happened
Well that happened with Death. Leprosy is still pretty awesome though.
It’s vintage and untouchable.
Spiritual Healing. It might be my favorite album and I might be wearing the shirt but its not their best overall. PS If we can just put the only Control Denied album on there so we dont have to do this, that would be best. Thank you.
i second control denied as our offering
The real answer would've been to not even comment on this one and just wait for tomorrow's poll
Scream Bloody Gore and you all know it.
![gif](giphy|IkBMOwZ44Ug7GxNuQx)
Meh, as long as Individual Thought Patterns wins tomorrow I suppose Spiritual Healing can be passed on.
SBG, how on earth are people saying Spiritual Healing it's nearly as good as Leprosy
The Sound of Perseverance.
bro what?
Did I stutter? I said what I said.
State your reasoning
It's not a Death album to me. It's a Control Deinied album. It was meant to be one. It sounds nothing like Death's previous work, and it should have been a Control Deinied album.
Scavenger or bite the pain, even to forgive is to suffer dosent sound like previous death to you?
Not at all. It you removed the harsh vocals and put clean vocals, it would be a Control Deinied song.
Well I can’t say I agree with you but I respect your opinion man have a good day
Bro people saying Spiritual Healing 😭😭 For me Scream Bloody Gore is worst. Not as progressive and weaker lyrics. Even though for me there is not any Death album that’s worst than 9/10
spiritual healing, its really good but its still the "worst" thing theyve put out. theyre just too consistently good a band to have anything truly bad
The Sound of Perseverance
How the fuck did Scream Bloody Gore or Leprosy not win best??? What the fuck
Not one
Fuck it’s hard to rank Death
Nothing, gun to my head ig spiritual healing
Oh boy
Spiritual Healing and Leprosy are Death's best moments IMO. Every song on those albums stands out. Tracks on Human and Individual Thought Patterns get repetitive.
Casting a vote for Scream Bloody Gore. Still pretty good and I certainly overplayed it at some point, but worst considering that Death only kept getting better from there
Spiritual Healing is the most underrated. TSoP and SBG have much worse songwriting than that album.
Scream Bloody Gore. Granted, I have a lot of sentimental love for it. It was my introduction to death metal in general, and I love the whole grimy, sloppy, stanky, recorded-in-someone's-garage vibe of the whole thing. But it's their least-great album.
sound of perserverance not winning best is a crime
scream bloody gore by a pretty wide margin
im gonna be controversial and say sound of perserverance... it's too long and you all know it
Scream bloody gore
Tough one
You're forgetting about Lulu...
Don’t want to be that guy but technically it’s a Lou reed album featuring Metallica, so it’s not really “Metallica music”
Tsop easily their worst
There is worst Death album! You can't make me pick one!
Can we leave that blank pretty please? If not then SBG would be the answer and even then, the album is great
I can feel you coping through the post Shield
Totally agree on Judas, Metallica and Slayer
Really??? Going with a cover album for Slayer’s worst when it’s obviously Diabolos en Musica
Can you do this again but with better, less poser bands?
Everyone saying Spiritual Healing needs to reevaluate themselves
I always get shit but my 2 least favorites are human and scream bloody gore
Wait wait wait, how the hell did we get masters of reality over paranoid?
SBG
metallicas should’ve been LuLu
Metallica is so good we can't even decide what their best album is.
St. Anger and death magnetic were atrocious.
personally i’d say sound of perseverance. the vocals and guitar tone really get to me but i feel like the songwriting outweighs it. overall i still think sop is the weakest
Sound of Perseverance
Sorry im not caught up, that is not blind guardian's worst album
Scream Bloody Gore, despite its grandiosity - and pioneering place in metal history…has to be the lesser of Chuck’s output. If* we have to go there.
Candlemass for sure
ITP but it's better than many bands best album, which is insane.
Yikes. I like Divine Intervention.
How TF is St. Anger there and not Lulu?
Spiritual Healing
Idk but I whole heartedly disagree with disputed attitude its one of my favorites
This is going to get controversial
Sound Of Perseverance
Spiritual Healing, is the REAL transition from early DEATH > more mature lyrical content/progressive transitions/Murphy/Chuck slay on this record. Human, gets the nod by most, for the “transition” album. Idts. It’s SH. and it shouldn’t be deemed their least/best output - on that account.
Scream Bloody Gore cuz the production sucks. How tf is spiritual healing the worst!? I’m upset.
TSOP is their worst
I agree. It’s a fun album, but it doesn’t showcase Chuck’s talent the way subsequent releases do. It’s like Venom with a much better guitarist.
sound of perseverance
The sound of perseverance
TSOP (I don’t like it)
Individual Thought Patterns
Scream bloody gore is the worst
Thought Patterns imo. It’s not even bad it just doesn’t hit like the others
TSOP, now before yall bring out the pitchforks and shun me into oblivion, the flow of the album is what keeps it from being one of their best. There’s many slower sections and moments of silence that just feel out of place
Scream Bloody Gore. But it’s still great, just not AS great.
I can’t choose. TSOP. There. That’s what I’m going with. Even though no such category exists for this band. There is no worst or best in my opinion. Just the progression towards perfection.
Spiritual healing
I can’t help but say that I think that Invincible Shield should take the place of Demolition. There’s one redeeming track on that album and truthfully as late career as Judas Priest is, it shouldn’t have been made. This isn’t how I want to remember them.
Spiritual Healing. Sorry Death 💀
Spiritual Healing. Death has no bad albums but this is the only one I would say is the least memorable
Spiritual Healing. And if I see anyone saying Individual Thought Patterns, blood shall be spilt.
Spiritual Healing is the least best Death album.
Spiritual healing
ITP And to anyone saying spiritual healing, give it a relisten, it’ll change your mind
Spiritual Healing. But only because I have to choose.
TSOP (I like this album)
The Sound of Perseverance
Human, im sorry
They said worst, not best.
Can we left it blank? There are literally not a single bad album.
worst =/= bad
https://preview.redd.it/tjtb9m08yb8d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=36961e4f4e35af1b09a462c4d2d6eeabaaeed77c
No.
Symbolic
The Sound of Perseverance
The Sound of Perseverance. I don’t care that it’s Death’s Swansong, it’s still their weakest by far
I don't think you know what a swansong is.
I do, and it certainly ain’t that. Chuck’s voice on that album is so ear grating plus the riffs reek of too much wank imo.
Unless you think Fragile Art of Existence is a Death album, which it literally is not, then TSOP is their swansong. A swansong is the last piece of art released before death or retirement. Your opinion of quality has no bearing on that whatsoever. Maybe your thinking of magnum opus?
Upvote, definitely an overrated album for me.
The Sound of Perseverance. Its a crime that Symbolic won by the way
Yeah individual thought patterns should have won
Listen big dog I like ITP, but this take is NOT it
Ok it has to win underrated then
Individual Thought Patterns
No.
SBG
What the fuck man
I know, right? Why did the correct answer get downvoted?
I honestly find it crazy how easily spiritual healing got voted as their worst album. I thought TSOP was considered their worst, followed by SBG.
