Honestly. Get a nice pair of headphones with noise cancelation. Prefer cans over earbuds. Lower volume required. And prioritize listening to music in a quiet environment, so you don't need to raise the volume, not in a noisy subway car during the morning commute. If you do the commute listening, don't expect to crank the volume to 11 so you can feel in your chest the bass line. And when you go to a concert, wear ear protection. I'd rather do that and still enjoy music in my 80s than turning 50 and have tinnitus. Then all guitar solos would sound like Kerry King...
Or learn to get used to it.
I'm not sure how it is for normal tinnitus sufferers since I've had mine since birth (I think it's a blood vessel or nerve thing), but it tends to go unnoticed unless I think about tinnitus.
Sometimes, I do notice it automatically when my blood pressure is higher or something. It's a lot louder and in time with my pulse.
It absolutely is not worth it. I’d give anything to not have it anymore. People kill themselves because of it. It’s ruined music for me because it’s all I hear.
yeah dawg that's just you. nothing to be proud of. its like being proud of how many minutes you can stare at the sun without blinking. you're injuring yourself. You're going to damage your hearing and regret it. Source: almost deaf in one ear, because that's the side my amp was on. Big regret.

*All men play on ten!*

>silence is deafening.
That was actually what my eight year old brain thought about my tinnitus. "Wow, it's so quiet at night that the silence is almost deafeningly loud!"
Nope, that's just the constant 12,500 Hz eeeeeeeeee in my head.
I’ve had tinnitus since I was a kid so I can confirm it definitely sucks but you kinda get used to it. But if you don’t have tinnitus then you should definitely try to prevent it by turning your music down
Airpod pros at 100% are nowhere near as loud as live music on stage behind my drumset, but my school bus (I’m a driver during the school year) can often get about as loud as Megadeth at 90% volume for 8 hours a day, and I am not allowed to wear hearing protection while I drive.
So for you to have ear issues at 31 says to me you used to play it awfully loud in your car … or … you use something awfully loud often.
I’m almost 50 and I have to pass a CDL hearing exam annually, all frequencies, in order to drive for the county. And I usually play my car around 97-103dB and my motorcycle registers around 110 due to wind against my watch.
So, dude, do you work on the tarmac of an airport or something??
No, dude. I don't work at an airport. But I was in the military for ten years, does that answer your question? The music isn't the only reason for my bad hearing. But it definitely doesn't help and I didn't think I needed to explain my life story for a reddit comment lol.
If you can spring for it, see an audiologist. I got custom molded earplugs with filters that reduce decibels and damaging high frequencies. Game changer. A billion times better than anything else I've tried in terms of sound quality.
I wear them at every concert and the majority of the time while performing.
Should anyone choose this route, CLEAN THEM REGULARLY!
And if you cannot afford the cost, use any protection that you can.
How do you recommend cleaning them? And what's the material? I have eargasm earplugs but read not to use alcohol and was unsure why. I have used it a few times and just want to know if there's a good reason not to.
I am not familiar with that brand, so I cannot advise you properly.
For the ones I described, I've used Q-tips for the ear channel part. Paper towel/toilet paper on the road. Soft soapy solution when you have the means.
You just have to get the gunk off them at the very least. There can be buildup that can cause an ear infection.
I've never used alcohol. I would suggest going by the manufacturers recommendation for cleaning. But even a quick wipe down is better than nothing.
just put your limit at 75db - your ears will get used to the lower volume and you'll be fine. And get noise cancelling headphones if you dont have them yet (over ear is better bc theres an additional physical layer but anthing's fine); like that you don't have to turn up the volume when it's loud around you
HOW INSULTING. I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO MUSIC AT HIGH VOLUME FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE AND MY HEARING IS TOTALLY FINE. WHAT A BUNCH OF WUSSES. WHAT? DO I HAVE ANY SIGNS OF TIN ITEMS? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU WHISPERING ABOUT?
Deafness is so fucking hardcore. It's a badass pipeline from hearing loss to tinnitus to insomnia to flirting with insanity. Go on, this is Apple telling you to be metal as fuck, you future deaf mental patient.
Sadly, you'll look less metal nodding and grinning like an agreeable fool in future conversations because you can't understand a word that's being said around you, but that's the price you pay for being so hardcore right now.
if you’re going to destroy your ears at least have a suicide plan after you go deaf because being a metalhead seems like all you have to live for if you are destroying yourself ******PERMANENTLY****** to listen to metal. Do you understand how long a week is? You probably have about 50+ years ahead of you. You won’t want to go fucking deaf for a few days of loud music. Stop being stupid
I just got a phone with this feature and I had to check if it was on because I couldn’t believe I haven’t seen this. Turns out my listening is “fine” even though it feels plenty loud to me. I have noise canceling Air Pod pros - maybe the quality earphones mean I don’t need it so loud
I'm 24, I've had tinnitus since I was 11/12. Not from loud music mind you but because of health reasons. I have not known a day in the last 12/13 years where my ears have not been ringing. You don't want this, it's never ending, it keeps me awake some nights. Just lower your volume, you're not cool for damaging your hearing.
Not sure what you mean by "life of a metal head." I have 5000 scrobbles of Revenge, but they were all under the EU mandated volume limit on my smartphone.
Or you could just like listen at normal volumes. Get better headphones if you can’t hear all the layers at whatever volume. Damaging your hearing isn’t metal.
There's just one thing that these comments are making me wonder though. There's so many, like really a lot of them, popular metal songs about drinking alcohol, and usually a lot of it. Where are all the metal fans to shame these bands with facts about how damaging alcohol is, like from a single beer already? Why is nobody telling them, and the fans of these bands/songs, that singing about drinking is not metal?
I think cuz we care about our ability to enjoy music and wouldn’t want to see one of us lose that ability.
If someone came on here posting about excessive drinking to the point they get multiple warnings, it’s hard to imagine people being like, hell yeah get that organ failure bruthurrrr sO mEtAl
But whatever
Yeah I get that it was out of good intentions, it's just something that seems kinda weird to me.
Like one story that I've often seen people share as something that is indeed really metal, is how Lemmy drank so much every day that he couldn't get a blood transfusion cause his body would likely reject normal blood at that point. People share that as a cool fact about Lemmy all the time.
However I do feel like if an average person said they did that people would indeed start telling them to stop it.
But another thing is that, alcohol is so much more accepted that if you get a warning about drinking you are usually already doing terrible and are probably on your way to actually dying. There are lots of news articles about the negative affects of drinking far less than that already, but those are mostly ignored.
Like, if you view a hangover or vomiting as a way of your body giving you a warning that you are drinking too much, then yes this is something people celebrate in metal. Alestorm often ask the audience at multi day festivals who was hungover this morning, followed by cheers, and then ask who is going to get drunk again tonight, followed by more cheers.
As long as you're not hurting anyone else I don't mind though. I just don't drink much at all, loud music is my thing. And I've had to deal with, among other things, volume warnings and limitations on music players because of living in the EU for at least 15 years now I think. And they don't set the warnings at like "Well, it's still ok to get a little damage". But then some things that people enjoy are perfectly fine to do while damaging your health. It all feels a bit hypocritical.
Do metal bands sing about drinking and driving? I’m genuinely curious because there’s quite a few songs in other genres about that and it just always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Like I can’t comfortably sing along with lyrics about something as reckless as that
I don't know about that specifically, to be honest I'm surprised there are songs about that at all. There's just a lot of songs about drinking til really bad stuff happens to you, but at least not to other people I think. And I don't mind those songs, just like I don't mind damaging yourself with music, you're only hurting yourself.
I mean I'm a fan of Tankard and Alestorm, I can't at all relate cause I drink very rarely, but it doesn't bother me if that's what people like to do for fun. Though with alcohol it is much more likely to hurt others than with loud music, but at least they don't celebrate that part I guess.
I really just wrote this cause the volume warnings on Op's phone remind me of people talking about how hungover they were in the morning, something often laughed at in metal. So why couldn't OP do the same but with his unhealthy habit instead of a more mainstream unhealthy habit?
As someone in their late 30s with tinnitus, let me tell you: tinnitus fucking sucks balls and you don’t want it. It can eventually lead to you not being able to enjoy metal at all. I’d rather listen a tiny bit quieter and get a few more years of happy listening before I go completely deaf. By all means, do what suits you though. I try to save my “insanely loud” listens for my favorite songs live.
My sister in collage once took a class about hearing, she told me that people around 20-30 are more likely to become deaf, when I heard that I felt silent
Either you need new headphones because the ones you’re currently using don’t go as loud as they should or you are at risk of massively damaging your hearing, not very relatable
You can still hear it without giving yourself hearing damage, stop being a dumbass or all your music will have a nice whine to it in a few years. And every other sound you hear.
In headphones it’s pretty much a no no for me to have music up that loud, when I’m driving on the highway with the windows down I’m more likely to blast it full but definitely not in an enclosed car or for a long time
Hey as someone who is hard of hearing, I feel this deeply. It’s not loud because I’m trying to slam to the music, I’m just fucking almost deaf already. I even get this with podcasts, I’ve not found a solid way to turn it off though.
My tinnitus has gone from a high pitch, faint whine, to chirping crickets, to now, a droning tone, sounds like road work all night. Way too much time with Walkmans, Minidiscs, and Sansa headphones turned up too loud and too close to speakers during shows, for 50 years. Heart rate, blood pressure and stress, all increase the volume, and is never is not there.
Wish we knew this back in the 70s& 80s.
I always make sure that the ear thing on the quick tray is below 80 decibels, I do NOT want to kill my hearing. I’d bet you don’t even wear earplugs at concerts lmao
I get why they have these warning for headphones, but it's really annoying when I'm listening via aux cable and it turns down the volume on me cus it thinks it's too loud.
I'm a drummer and this comes on whenever I have in ear monitors and barely have volume up. I think you're good. I have no idea why but I get this when I only use wired IEMs, no problem with casual listening Airpods Pro 2 at a higher volume
Configure your audio device as car stereo or other in settings to get rid of this message.
But only if it’s a false positive. For example volume of iPhone is set to 100% while connected to another device so you can control volume solely on that device.

It’s worth it…. Lol
No it wont when your hearing is permanently damaged
Just a question: What do you suggest to do to prevent tinnitus? Corrective surgery?
At the moment there is no cure. You can only take preventative measures such as reducing the volume of your music.
Or learn to get used to it. I'm not sure how it is for normal tinnitus sufferers since I've had mine since birth (I think it's a blood vessel or nerve thing), but it tends to go unnoticed unless I think about tinnitus. Don't do this, because one day you'll be 31 like me and have tinnitus. It fucking sucks lol.
Same here. Use to listen to my music loud as well. Now it’s medium. 😂
yeah I've had that shit for longer than I can remember and I'm not even as old as you yet, still a few more to go. silence is deafening.
>silence is deafening. That was actually what my eight year old brain thought about my tinnitus. "Wow, it's so quiet at night that the silence is almost deafeningly loud!" Nope, that's just the constant 12,500 Hz eeeeeeeeee in my head.

You know airpod pros can reach up to around 100 decibels? Listening at 90 for prolonged periods can cause tinnitus lol.
No, dude. I don't work at an airport. But I was in the military for ten years, does that answer your question? The music isn't the only reason for my bad hearing. But it definitely doesn't help and I didn't think I needed to explain my life story for a reddit comment lol.
Nothing to be proud of. Protect your ears, you’ll regret it later on down the road
As someone with hearing damage from many concerts and band practices without protection... just don't!
It’s different being blasted by a wall of amps or your drummers four on the floor than loud music in your headphones.
Foam earbuds EQs the music better, though.

Hey as someone who is hard of hearing, I feel this deeply. It’s not loud because I’m trying to slam to the music, I’m just fucking almost deaf already. I even get this with podcasts, I’ve not found a solid way to turn it off though.
Speak into my good ear, sonny! Let me get my earhorn.
Moron.
Buy better quality headphones. Game changer.
I only relate to this because my phone thinks my speaker is headphones
I'm glad I would not hear my boyfriend snorting if I could have one /s ok, I always keep the volume at 50%, exactly 50%. It's a ritual.
Hearing damage is cumulative and permanent
I’m just listening to financial news all day, and I get the same. I think my AirPods think I’m a pussy.
Hey, if you love metal so much, then you might want to protect your ears so that you can listen to metal in the future too!
Wear earbuds guys

Put on a noise limiter dawg
I always make sure that the ear thing on the quick tray is below 80 decibels, I do NOT want to kill my hearing. I’d bet you don’t even wear earplugs at concerts lmao
Stupidest fucking flex ever, lmao. You look and sound like a pencil pricked insecure 15 year old whenever you post shit like this.
Your phone seriously needs to mind it's own fucking business.
I get why they have these warning for headphones, but it's really annoying when I'm listening via aux cable and it turns down the volume on me cus it thinks it's too loud.
Yeah like I'd listen to what APPLE tells me. THEY CANNOT KILL THE METAL
I'm a drummer and this comes on whenever I have in ear monitors and barely have volume up. I think you're good. I have no idea why but I get this when I only use wired IEMs, no problem with casual listening Airpods Pro 2 at a higher volume
