Seriously, that album blew up the Internet for about a month and then I've never heard it talked about since. It's an amazing album from an amazing band tho
That’s just the nature of the online metal scene. There’s always a new album breaking the internet. It’s nice that so many bands get the recognition they deserve, but you do have to make an effort to not forget great releases after months pass.
It was in one of the tournaments on this sub not too long ago, and the fact that it was knocked out in the bottom row was ridiculous. People can’t accept that a modern album can be better than old ones.
Eh, it probably wouldn’t make my top 25 or so but I do absolutely fucking love it. Especially in conjunction with the Silver Cord. The melodic overlap between those 2 is really fucking cool.
It definitely just gives me the vibe of tourists trying metal for fun (and because they clearly genuinely fucking love it.) Maybe thats just some gatekeeper bias sneaking up on me.
Nothing would make me happier than to see them just become a weirdo microtonal thrash band and just stop the jammy stuff but doing whatever they want and not over analyzing it is definitely their thing. Its created some records I dont think are particularly good but a hell of a lot more I really dig.
Interesting… I think a lot of artists have the potential to make a an amazing metal album. And garage thrash isn’t that far off from metal anyways. It could have been their very first album and I would still be saying the same thing, Your opinion about tourist metal is def a gate keeping opinion. If it’s good, it’s good.
It’s funny that you said you love it, but it wouldn’t make your top 25, how much new metal have you heard?!? A lot I guess.
My bias is that if a song is in 4/4 throughout, it looses a lot of creativity points in my opinion. I find a lot of metal a bit unoriginal (new or slightly old) and Petro hits all the prog check boxes that makes my brain happy. Infest is great too for this reason, but I fell like they def stepped up their game for Petro.
Also I love every KGLW album from Fishies to Murder so that’s another bias.
Can you give me a metal list of your tips for this decade? I still haven’t heard anything that would top Petro that has come out in tue last five years.
Thanks
Of course man! So I listened to Petro tonight and it’s definitely in my top few dozen records, I wasnt remembering just how good the last 20 minutes is. Flamethrower in particular is just really fucking original and unique and they deserve a lot of credit for that.
Yeah im really lucky to have a job where I can listen to ridiculous music very loudly all the time so I get to try out a bunch of new stuff every day, im very grateful for that.
So Im not saying these are necessarily my “top 20” or whatever of the decade but these are some of my favorites. Im mostly into progressive death metal right now.

I was happy to see Dark Tranquility announce a North American tour this year, but I got really excited when I saw that Fires in the Distance was the opener. The entirety of Air Not Meant For Us is killer, it's been one of my favorites since I was introduced to it last year.
Fair as I discovered them via a Shoegaze recommendation. That said their prior stuff is very black metal, much to my surprise when I checked it out, so I still consider them a metal band.
Maybe not the best, but certainly my favorite of the decade (so far):

I agree with Spiritbox - Eternal Blue and raise you Deftones - Ohms. It's incredible how the 'Tones can still sound so fresh, yet so familiar and put out such amazing work after 30 years.

Also have to mention Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden. Some of the most unique and diverse albums out there and got many people into metal.
1. Eternal Blue - Spiritbox
2. Post Human NeX GEn - BMTH
3. You Won't Before Your Supposed To - Knocked Loose
4. Foregone - In Flames
5. The War To End All Wars - Sabaton
Rankings by a Poser!
The HIRS Collective - We're Still Here
Blackbraid - Blackbraid II
Cult Leader - Gather & Mourn
I would also hesitate to say metal, because it's a bit different, but Full of Hell/Nothing - When No Birds Sing
This one deserves a mention:

Nothing As the Ideal by All Them Witches
Space Chaser : Give us life
Is probably my most played
Crypta : Shades of Sorrow
has caught my fancy as well
Of if you include re-release then
Black Sabbath: Forbidden - always liked it and recording makes it even better
Also
Cavalera: Morbid Visions
For me in no order.
Counterparts - A Eulogy For Those Still Here
Currents - The Death We Seek
The Amity Affliction - Not Without My Ghosts
Trivium - In The Court Of The Dragon
Silent Planet - SUPERBLOOM
Give a shout to Pain Remains by Lorna Shore. They finally clicked for me and it's a really good album.

We're not even halfway through the decade yet.
Would you be happier if OP asked for the best album of the last 4 1/2 years?
It’d be more accurate
No
Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags by Hellripper has got to be up there.
It's a top ten album for me. I have to be careful not to listen to it too much or i'll spoil it
It was in one of the tournaments on this sub not too long ago, and the fact that it was knocked out in the bottom row was ridiculous. People can’t accept that a modern album can be better than old ones.
I must play this at least 2x per week
Blackened Thrash at its absolute best.
Sorry, it’s Petro https://preview.redd.it/6vjoayp5j88d1.jpeg?width=663&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf1990700ab1e3afac8a3e9eae4986eb9ccae254
Its not but I appreciate your enthusiasm!
It’s at least top 5
Eh, it probably wouldn’t make my top 25 or so but I do absolutely fucking love it. Especially in conjunction with the Silver Cord. The melodic overlap between those 2 is really fucking cool. DRAGONIC
Sulphur Aeon - seven crowns and seven seals for me but it's close!
Excellent album! every song on it is a banger
Best blackened death band out there and I WILL die on that hill.
This is fuckin sick! Not sure how I haven't heard of them
YES
Great rec thanks this is pretty damn good
Happy to hear!

Good Shout!
This is the answer
So glad to see this!
INSANE release. So fucking good
I’ll go with Wayfarer: American Gothic
I wanted to like this, but it bore me
Throes of joy in the jaws of defeatism - Napalm Death Terrasite - Cattle Decapitation
Terrasite
The Parasitic Chambers - Conjureth Eternal Hails… - Darkthrone Temples Colliding in Fire - Inconcessus Lux Lucis Krupinské Ohne - Malokarpatan Piercing Through the Frozen Eternity - Moonlight Sorcery Hive Mind Narcosis - Thantifaxath Ordalies - Véhémence Foreverglade - Worm
That Conjureth album is so good 🥵
new one coming this year too
Hell yeah can’t wait
Mastodon’s Hushed and Grim High on Fire’s Cometh the Storm
In no particular order: * Blind Guardian - The God Machine * Immolation - Acts of God * Spectral Wound - A Diabolic Thirst * Archspire - Bleed the Future * Havukruunu - Uinuos syömein sota * Moonlight Sorcery - Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle
Nice to see some love for Havukruunu. They don’t get nearly the recognition they deserve.
Tomb Mold’s The Enduring Spirit
I may get downvoted for this one, but I have highly enjoyed the new Avenged Sevenfold album so far.
The opening of Nobody gets me every time. It's like 2 notes, but there's something about it that I really dig. It's probably the tone.
I think “We Love You” might be my favorite on the album.
Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse Thantifaxath - Hive Mind Narcosis Liturgy - 93696 Imperial Triumphant - Alphaville White Ward - False Light
my man going full avant garde
Passéisme - Eminence Lvcifyre - The Broken Seal Der Tod und die Landsknechte - Wir fürchten weder Tod noch Teufel Adversarial - Solitude with the Eternal... Candelabrum - Nocturnal Trance Heresiarch - Edifice Grave Pilgrim - Grave Pilgrim Mütiilation - Black Metal Cult Grave Miasma - Abyss of Wrathful Deities Mons Veneris - Inversados d'Um Abismo de Podridão Tetragrammacide - Typho-Tantric Aphorisms from the Arachneophidian Qur'an Negative Plane - The Pact
Violence unimagined by CC, hands down for me
Great pick. This album has such a distinctive sound. If you haven't spun this one yet, give "Crumbling Pillars of a Tranquil Mind" a try.
I was happy to see Dark Tranquility announce a North American tour this year, but I got really excited when I saw that Fires in the Distance was the opener. The entirety of Air Not Meant For Us is killer, it's been one of my favorites since I was introduced to it last year.
Black Curse - Endless Wound is still my favorite so far
Carnosus - Dogma of the deceased
Their 2023 album is insane aswell
Eternal Blue - Spiritbox Infinite Granite - Deafheaven Abyss - Unleash the Archers Human Nature - Nightwish
As much as I like the album, Infinite Granite is more so post-rock/shoegaze rather than blackgaze/metal.
Fair as I discovered them via a Shoegaze recommendation. That said their prior stuff is very black metal, much to my surprise when I checked it out, so I still consider them a metal band.
Maybe not the best, but certainly my favorite of the decade (so far): https://preview.redd.it/yg29mbyht88d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f450c9ddb8a9c94b678f222016f1970578460872
You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To - Knocked Loose, first 10/10 ive heard in a while
For me so far it’s The Cyclic Reckoning from Suffering Hour.
Every Suffering Hour is a banger and their tone scratches a very specific brain itch of mine
Insane album, that guitar tone ughh
This release by FITD is an absolute monster.
I agree with Spiritbox - Eternal Blue and raise you Deftones - Ohms.
