I completely agree, Casino is my favorite hands down. Not that I don't also love Goodfellas but in my opinion everything about Casino from the story, the acting, the composition, even the music... It's an absolute masterpiece imo.
A great day of English gangster movies for me would be:
Layer Cake
Gangster No. 1
Rock n Rolla
The Long Good Friday
EDIT: Sexy Beast! How could I forget that one. Although I would say the gangster part isn’t the main focus.
Also not Italian, but American Gangster starting Denzel Washington is great too. By extension of it being in NYC, it has the vibe of most other mob flicks.
One of the best films ever. However, although the characters are gangsters, it’s not primarily and thematically about gangsters. I don’t see it as a gangster film, as such.
I absolutely love Goodfellas, and if we’re talking cultural icon status, I think it’s clearly the “bigger” movie compared to Casino. But my goodness, the scale and look of Casino is phenomenal. I’ve come to think it’s the better movie over the years.
Is there anything better than "Goodfellas"? I wouldn’t say so. Nothing beats that iconic line: "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster." To me, it’s a perfect movie.
There are plenty of other epic gangster films and TV shows, though. An obvious recommendation would be the first two "Godfather" movies.
For a less obvious suggestion, check out "Gomorrah." It’s a TV show about the mob in Naples, Italy. It's very authentic, the story is written by someone who went undercover.
There’s also a feature film called Gomorrah that came out before the series.
And another movie - The Immortal (Le Immortale) which is connected to the series. To be watched between season 4 & 5 :-)
That’s not correct, The Gomorrah film came out years before the series started. You’re thinking of the immortal, The spin off film about Ciro that’s in the tv series.
This is a little out of the box but the movie The Gentlemen or even the series The Gentlemen. Also Peaky Blinders. None of this is Mafia but it's definitely gangster and worth a look.
I don't tend to watch that many films of that genre, but I absolutely remember watching it when I was younger, and really enjoying it until my mum came in and saw five seconds of Joe Pesci, and said, 'You're not watching something with that kind of language.' Honestly, the language didn't bother me, but I was downright terrified of that character, and if she didn't want me watching it, that should have been the reason.
I saw it in full years later, and really enjoyed it.
Some that may not be listed here.
Sexy Beast. British ex-pat gangsters in Spain are forced to confront their past when a terrifying former colleague (Ben Kingsley) insists on visiting.
City of God. Brazilian street crime. Heartbreaking, terrifying… crazy movie
A History of Violence. Russian mob in New York.
The Drop. Tom Hardy it’s a bartender for a mob run bar. Money goes missing
A Most Violent Year. Not as well known as it deserves to be. Oscar Isaac is a businessman and not exactly a lawful one.
A Prophet. French gangster epic.
The Godfather I and II are great movies that are about mobsters. For a non-American mob movie check out A Better Tomorrow. Sleeper mob adjacent movie: The Pope of Greenwich Village
Also the very underrated “ Public Enemies” starring Johnny Depp( speaking of Michael Mann “ Thief” with James Cann is a great crime thriller)“ Road to Perdition “ with Tom Hanks. And saving the best for last, “ King of New York” & “ Poolhall Junkies “ 2 very good Christopher Walken films.
Casino is like the companion piece to Goodfellas. It's almost as good.
The Godfather is amazing but more tame compared to Goodfellas. Still shows the mob life in an entertaining way, just more old fashioned time period and filming style.
I recently saw Black Mass for the first time and it was a lot better than I thought it would be.
A Bronx Tale and Donnie Brasco are good too.
But overall The Godfather and Goodfellas are probably the best.
Depends on what you want from a gangster film. I think Carlito's Way is better. The story of a mob guy really trying to get out but unable to escape his roots is really compelling.
But art is subjective, so I don't know if you'll ever find a better gangster film than GoodFellas.

I don't know about "better" - that's so subjective - but these are also great: The Godfather Trilogy A Bronx Tale Road to Perdition The Untouchables
Am I mistaken or is Casino largely a mob movie? If so, I think it’s a decent one.
De Niro is superb in Casino
Yeah Casino is my favourite. Epic.
I completely agree, Casino is my favorite hands down. Not that I don't also love Goodfellas but in my opinion everything about Casino from the story, the acting, the composition, even the music... It's an absolute masterpiece imo.
Both great, but I liked Goodfellas a little better. I can only take so much of Sharon Stone in Casino and I have to turn it off lol
Hard agree on Bronx Tale. I'd throw in Once Upon a Time in America and the list would be complete.
I might add Miller’s Crossing The Departed
Damn, yeah Millers Crossing is awesome.
Snatch is a gangster movie.
Miller's Crossing sadly never gets mentioned in conversations about mobster films. It's a great film.
I was coming here to post Miller’s Crossing: It never gets enough love!
Id add Casino as well
Road to Perdition is an absolutely superb movie.
I'll throw in White Heat for something older. MADE IT MA! TOP OF THE WORLD!
I’ll add another solid one. Scarface (1932)
The OG Scarface movie rocked. Almost as if the only good movies are in color.
Id throw in Heat. The downtown bank shootout is the best action scene ive ever seen on film
Heat is more of a cops n robbers, heist movie than a mob movie.
What about Gangs of New York?
Always epic.
Road to Perdition and Untouchables are fantastic.
Trilogy? The Godfather only has two parts.
The third one really isn't nearly as bad as people say. The worst thing about it is that Copolla thought his daughter could act.
The Untouchables felt so dummy like compared to the other mob movies to me
Yeah, but Connerry's is superb. Best death scene I've ever seen.
Not Italian American but Layer Cake which is a British gangster movie is good
A great day of English gangster movies for me would be: Layer Cake Gangster No. 1 Rock n Rolla The Long Good Friday EDIT: Sexy Beast! How could I forget that one. Although I would say the gangster part isn’t the main focus.
Gangster No. 1 doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Great performance from Paul Bettany!
Yeah stunning performance. “Look in my eyes”. I’m amazed by the amount of snot that came out of Eddie Marsan’s nose.
Get Carter??
The Long Good Friday is so good.
Sexy Beast!
Rock n Rolla is another Great Movie that doesn’t get enough Love!
My favorite British gangster movie is Sexy Beast. W you haven’t seen it, highly recommend
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!
It's a great film.
The Long Good Friday is a good watch; last scene is fantastic.
Sienna Miller running away to put on black stockings only to find the blond james bond gone, on return, was so wildly-angled
Lock Stock is also excellent.
Also not Italian, but American Gangster starting Denzel Washington is great too. By extension of it being in NYC, it has the vibe of most other mob flicks.
Angels with filthy souls
“Snakes? I don’t know no snakes.”
He sounded like a snake…
Keep the change, ya filthy animal. Stone cold classic.
Once Upon a Time in America. The long version…
One of the best films ever. However, although the characters are gangsters, it’s not primarily and thematically about gangsters. I don’t see it as a gangster film, as such.
Agree. Best movie ever made IMO
+1 time for a rewatch!
This is my favorite gangster movie.
4.5 fucking hours???
Sergio Leone yo
IIRC this is his last film.
Originally to be six hours. One day we may see a director's cut but he passed in 1989.
Sergio had 10 hours filmed. So even the 6 hr is a very cut version. Orginally he wanted it to be 2 films.
I know you are looking for movies but I have to recommend HBO show Boardwalk Empire, it has a movie quality
Excellent suggestion! What a great show.
👍
Casino is JUST ABOUT as good.
Casino is on equal grounds with Good Fellas in my book
I absolutely love Goodfellas, and if we’re talking cultural icon status, I think it’s clearly the “bigger” movie compared to Casino. But my goodness, the scale and look of Casino is phenomenal. I’ve come to think it’s the better movie over the years.
Casino is better. In fact the best movie ever made imho
That’s a bold ass statement and I respect the hell out of it.
I prefer Casino, cause my family is mentioned in the both the movie and the book it's based on
Miller's Crossing
This the my personal favorite gangster flick with Goodfellas being a close second.
Came to say this. This came out at the same time, but is the superior movie IMHO.
Damn, good answer. Forgot about this pure gold.
A history of violence. Edit Godfather 2 Road to Perdition. Scarface
I remember Road to Perdition being so good. Going to have to dust that one off and give it a watch again.
Jude Law was amazing in that movie. Played the creepy serial killer vibes dude to perfection.
Donnie Brasco
I can’t figure out why I had to scroll so far to see this comment, Donnie Brasco is a phenomenal movie.
Same here.
My answer was going to be: No, but check out Donnie Brasco
This is the only other movie I've seen that I feel comes close.
fuhgeddaboudit
Nothin' but nothin' but right.
Donnie Brasco approaches it
Godfather 1/2 both better imo City of God Le Circle Rouge The Departed
City of God is an amazing film, deep cut diamond choice
Le Cercle Rouge is amazing. Le Deuxieme Souffle is another great Melville heist film.
I have that on my list over on amazon. Melville has really become an all timer for me.
Yeah he’s got a lot of great films, his influence on modern crime cinema is enormous. Have fun exploring!
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is one of my faves along with Snatch. Well at least they are criminals.
Snatch... it stands alone.
No but Godfather one and Two are great. Sopranos are the only mob content that’s better.
This is the right answer.
And then there was Jimmy Two Times, who got that nickname because he said everything twice, like: “I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers.”
Is there anything better than "Goodfellas"? I wouldn’t say so. Nothing beats that iconic line: "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster." To me, it’s a perfect movie. And the little known TV show Sopranos
Damn how could i forget the sopranos lol
That one really flew under the radar. So few people have heard of it. Oof madone
There’s also a feature film called Gomorrah that came out before the series. And another movie - The Immortal (Le Immortale) which is connected to the series. To be watched between season 4 & 5 :-)
Check out "The Ruthless" (Lo spietato), 2019
Other than Sofia Coppola the third one isn’t that bad.
Gomorra was incredible. My favorite show ever.
Didn’t know it was a show! Movie was great.
Yeah, you’re supposed to watch the movie between seasons 4 and 5
That’s not correct, The Gomorrah film came out years before the series started. You’re thinking of the immortal, The spin off film about Ciro that’s in the tv series.
Frank White would like a word….The King of New York.
Godfather 1&2 but after those not really
Snatch, Rock N’ Rolla, and The Gentleman are great British gangster movies.
I really enjoyed The Gentleman as well…Rock N Rolla is one of My All-Time Faves!
Miller's Crossing Once Upon A Time In America (starts slow but worth the wait) The Godfather trilogy
Am I the only gen X American male that enjoys Casino more than GF??
Not better but good gangster movies King of new york New Jack City
Melville has like 4 or 5 better
This is a little out of the box but the movie The Gentlemen or even the series The Gentlemen. Also Peaky Blinders. None of this is Mafia but it's definitely gangster and worth a look.
Peaky blinder have the Italian mafia and battle the American mafia in one of their seasons as well.
The Long Good Friday (1980)
Scarface
Snatch
My blue heaven
well, the godfather is considered the best such film ever made.
Donnie Brasco.
The Public Enemy (1931)
It is my favorite also, but Guy Ritchie has some really good ones as well. Snatch is a particularly good one.
D’ya like dags?
I don't tend to watch that many films of that genre, but I absolutely remember watching it when I was younger, and really enjoying it until my mum came in and saw five seconds of Joe Pesci, and said, 'You're not watching something with that kind of language.' I saw it in full years later, and really enjoyed it.
Well The Godfarher is arguably as good if not better. I am surprised no one has mentioned Casino?
Reservoir dogs Bugsy (not better but good)
“At Close Range” & “ State of Grace” 2 really good Sean Penn movies!
Maybe not "better" which is entirely subjective but I really enjoyed A Bronx Tale
Once Upon a Time in America Godfather I & II
Bugsy Malone
If you like humor with your gangsters, Johnny Dangerously
This is fargin war.
Donnie Brasco and The Departed should be on that list
Casino
Miller's Crossing and State of Grace
Man, nobody remembers State of Grace. Gangster movie fans were eating well in 1990.
So fantastic, that cast too.
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels / Snatch
"The departed" is one of the fast-paced Scorsese movie!!
Casino is a top notch film. I enjoy it more than Goodfellas in some ways.
The Godfather Casino The Irishman The Departed The Town…
Donny brasco, casino, a Bronx tale to name a couple. These are also movies that I somehow enjoyed more than goodfellas. Al movies are good though.
The Godfather 1&2
Carlito’s Way
2 Brothers \* Brother (Japananese/US 2000, Takeshi Kitano) \* Brother (1997, USSR)
Motherless Brooklyn is a newer crime drama, set in the 50s
Not movies but Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire are up there
Casino (1995) - not as good, but still excellent, and thematically and tonally very different to GoodFellas (despite superficial similarities).
Snatch, The Gentleman
Not better but worth a watch Kill The Irishman
I’m not going to say it’s better but I like the movie Hoodlum (1997)
I mean, it's an HBO show, but maybe Sopranos? Otherwise, probably not. Godfather maybe.
Donnie B
No
Watch the sopranos
Nope.
The outfit (2022) is really good
The Departed
I would say no.
I'm a fan of older gangster films. Angels With Dirty Faces is amazing.
The Departed and its original version, Infernal Affairs, are different in style but very good in their own right!
Holes (2003)
State of grace
Sonatine
The Gentlemen
Sexy Beast - Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley
Don’t forget Analyze This for a comedic take.
I know it's a show, but if you haven't watched The Sopranos yet, that's an absolute must.
American Gangster, nothing like Denzel Washington
In my opinion, no, there is not. The Godfather 1 and 2 come the closest.
Good Fellas, Casino, and the Irishman are all comparable to each other IMO
Godfather is significantly better, but that said, Goodfellas is a terrific watch.
Once Upon a Time in America
Watch the series Boardwalk Empire
Mickey blue eyes
Goncharov
Some that may not be listed here. Sexy Beast. British ex-pat gangsters in Spain are forced to confront their past when a terrifying former colleague (Ben Kingsley) insists on visiting. City of God. Brazilian street crime. Heartbreaking, terrifying… crazy movie A History of Violence. Russian mob in New York. The Drop. Tom Hardy it’s a bartender for a mob run bar. The Drop, a fantastic, underrated movie!
The Godfather I and II are great movies that are about mobsters. For a non-American mob movie check out A Better Tomorrow. Sleeper mob adjacent movie: The Pope of Greenwich Village
unfortunately Goodfellas is the best lol. if you haven't seen the sopranos though that's the closest way to scratch the Goodfellas itch
Casino imo
Don’t forget about “The Wire” on HBO & “ City on a Hill” on Showtime. 2 very good cop dramas.
I say no. I do love Casino and Godfather Parts 1 and 2 though.
If you like Goodfellas, try Casino or The Departed.
Blood in Blood out
One that I watched recently that doesn’t get mentioned a whole lot that I thought is the same quality as Goodfellas is The Long Good Friday (1980)
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (isn’t you can understand a word anyone is saying)
I can’t watch goodfellas bc the domestic violence scenes are way too much for me
State of Grace. Irish mob in NYC.
For me no. The only thing that competes is sopranos and that’s not a movie so goodfellas wins for best monster movie
Depends on what you want from a gangster film. I think Carlito's Way is better. The story of a mob guy really trying to get out but unable to escape his roots is really compelling. But art is subjective, so I don't know if you'll ever find a better gangster film than GoodFellas.
Black Mass.
Gangster no 1 and The Long Good Friday
I think Goodfellas is the best one, personally. Millers Crossing is great too but with a totally different flavor.
Casino The Departed
Millers crossing - for less viewed, but good.
Casino
No. There is not.
Not really. A great heist film with mobster undertones is Pope of Greenwich Village.
