I stayed at the Aloft directly across from the train station last month. It is not a bad area. Did not seem dangerous at all. There are a few panhandlers around but nothing bad. Hotel itself is nice and very clean. You a a few minutes walk from Marienplatz.
Ostbahnhof is 10 mins away from the center so I would still stay there if you have a nice hotel

Nah you dont want to be at Hauptbahnhof. Especially the south side. Meridian is really nice, but thats not a nice area.
What area would you recommend? I just assumed city center/train station would be the central spot for tourists
It is. But its also the only shady area in M. Just go 5 streets in any direction and you're good.
