Upping this suggestion, rentals at the chimes is a wonderful deal as well as a beautiful natural location. Kayaking in bsj still feels too much like the city for me

I just looked in to this for myself this weekend! Haven’t gone yet but seems legit and this was a recommended location for kayaking that came up when I was browsing online. Just half hour from metro area!
I see a lot of people enjoying their inflatable kayaks on bayou St. John. The inflatables won’t move as smoothly as actual kayaks, but would solve your transportation issue.
There’s a company that rents kayaks at Bayou Cane on the North Shore. You can also go to Lake Martin out by Lafayette and rent kayaks. It is definitely worth the drive. Some state parks also rent kayaks and canoes. Most other kayak rentals will be with guided tours.
Several people have suggested Bayou Paddlesports, and while they are on BSJ they are some of the friendliest and inclusive people you will meet. Rent from them once and I am sure they will give you the lowdown on great spots to kayak and people from whom to rent.
We kayak and paddle board quite a bit on the Northshore. Bogue Falaya river has a couple of options for rentals on site (Chimes) as well as delivery (Masseys? maybe) We also just had a Backpacker open. They offer rentals but I don’t believe they deliver although, they have great prices for all day rentals.
Massey's rents kayaks it's been a while but I had no problem renting eight of them a couple years back. They also do demo days on Bayou St. John each month if you just want to see what have on offer
about 2 hours directly north of the city is Tylertown, MS. The Sweetwater Canoe & Trail Outpost up there rents kayaks and canoes for day trips. You can take the Bogue Chitto or the Magees Creek route. 10/10 recommend the creek. The water is muuuuch clearer than you’ll find anywhere down here. Plenty of spots you’ll wanna get out and swim or play on the rocky beaches. I personally feel much more comfortable doing so in the creek than the bogue chitto. On more than one occasion i’ve gone with some friends. Aside from the shuttle over, we didn’t see another soul on the water. If you end up checking it out, definitely take your time, as the water flows faster at some points. It makes your trip fly by. The outpost itself also has hot showers, ice and camping sites.
If you really love it, it’s worth the $300 for a rig and supplies once you’re able. I’ve been pulling it off with a shitty sedan for years so don’t make the car excuse!

Seminary, MS has fun kayaking and offers rentals. It's about 2 hours away.
I second this. Okatoma Outdoor Post has always been my favorite
https://www.canoeandtrail.com The sunset paddle is AMAZING but be prepared to bump some gator snouts!
I’ve rented a kayak from Massey’s on the Northshore to kayak in the bayous over there. Had a blast too!
Can also rent at Chimes in Covington.
