How does a man go from fringed jackets and long curls to this straight edge grown up? Get dad a fringed leather jacket. He needs to find his inner rockstar again!

hnoel88

His current state of… whatever this is, is all for practicality. He was an electrician working in 120 degree factories so he shaved his head. Then he got skin cancer so he wears boring UV protectant shirts. He also has an autoimmune disorder that makes his skin feel like it’s crawling and his joints feel like they’re on fire. He still plays the hell out of a guitar, though. Edit: Finally fixed the typo that’s been driving me insane since last night

lorfeir

As someone who's your dad's age and now has to get stuff frozen off his face every year by a dermatologist: You kids better put on your sunscreen before you go outside to play, or so help me! Also, would it kill you to wear a hat?

PuppycatLove

Thanks dad I’ll be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen!

PengwinPears

I did wear a hat and sunscreen, I swear! Still had to get some stupid cancer cut off last year in my 30s. Get those spots looked at!

Hollayo

That's rad, especially the last part

hostile_scrotum

I mean, only the last part I guess. The rest isn’t that rad lol

Theo_earl

Of course dad is an electrician. Fucking legend.

back_again_u_bitches

Tell Dad he's still good looking. Dang you had some hair for a baby! I bet you got that thick hair from your mom.

Ordinary-Spirit1423

That man? Fuckin legend

firemanjuanito

He's a badass. And mom is a beauty. I love seeing these stories. Best to you all.

AutumnalSunshine

Time's winged chariot comes for us all.

GGAllinsUndies

The dude's a Devil Rays fan. Give him a break.

ProductUpdate

Life ripped the fringes off

ManIWantAName

Today was a day the internet felt like it was worth inventing. Thanks for the wholesomeness OP.

hnoel88

Aww. I’m glad I could brighten your day!

GrantNevins

Mine too!! I'm all teary, ffs, lol! Thank you beautiful stranger 😊

Vusum

I see you have a mix of your dad's non smile and your mom's smile. Very neat

Hot_Argument6020

You have beautiful eyes

hnoel88

Thank you! Those I got from my dad.

Bau5_Sau5

Hey just want to say this post is so awesome and wholesome , my parents had me at 18, im 30 now and they are the staple of our entire family. I adore their relationship and look up to them so much. Thank you for this awesome post 🤘🏼🤘🏼

phjohns89

Seeing these three pictures really put a smile on my face. 1989 here. Have a good day.

Positive_Spirit_1585

Your mom gives off an Ally Sheedy vibe and you got a cool Billie Eilish thing going on

Deathbyhours

As the pediatrician said when he came into my bedroom and saw me being guarded by my snow white cat and her jet black son, “Genes are wonderful things.”

Junior_Blackberry779

![gif](giphy|l3q2tzon8OCC7BqmY) Bruh, you're freaking beautiful

hnoel88

Thank you! That’s very kind!

cherhorowitz1985

Your hair has really changed! I love all of that hair you had as a baby.

[deleted]

You look british

Front_Refrigerator99

Omg they de-yassifyed your dad!

Lazy-Marionberry-125

Wait, so your dad didn't die fighting a giant demon from the upside-down in a mall? That show lied to me!

hnoel88

That show loves faking deaths! This is just what happened to Eddie once he settled down in his 50s.

ItsJimKennedy

Does he still like Led Zeppelin?

hnoel88

Oh yeah. He’s still a rockstar at heart.

Im_homer_simpson

You should find you dad his totally rad earing.

Teeth-Mitch

Is this man ever not horrified?

hnoel88

He can’t take a picture to save his life. He’s so goofy and full of life in real life. But all his pictures are TERRIBLE.

Pigeonofthesea8

You have to not tell him you’re taking the picture, gotta sneak them in

Newtechintown

Oh hey I’m from Tampa and go to Rays games all the time I wonder how often I’ve walked by them and never noticed lol

hnoel88

They’re in Port Charlotte!

hnoel88

Yes! Kind of. I actually got married at 19 and had my first kid at 21. Divorced when I was 29. So… not the epic love story my parents have.

CommonGrounders

Being a grandparent at 39 is wild.

hnoel88

My oldest was born two weeks after my mom turned 40. Which freaks me out since I’m 35.

pancakesfordintonite

Dang you still had kids pretty young too. And here I am 39 in 2 weeks and I don't have children. It's always interesting when people have kids

nodiggityn0doubt

It’s funny bc he’s not smiling but he IS smiling lol it’s in his eyes

Sean_Dewhirst

the guy who never smiles smiled when he got you.

Sweatytubesock

Hard to imagine myself with that responsibility at that age, so kudos to your parents and all others who manage it.

hnoel88

They were (and still are) incredible parents. I don’t know how they did it, but they dedicated their insanely young lives to giving me the very best of themselves. I am so fortunate and love them both so much.

lscraig1968

Congrats to you and your family. I love hearing these stories. Thanks for sharing.

danarchist

I'm guessing your grandparents are pretty cool too. My granddad would have lost hist shit if a dude with that earring knocked up my mom and didn't immediately remove it and get a job as soon as she had a positive test.

hnoel88

Oh my mom’s parents were awful. They hated my dad until the day they died. They loved me and I have fond memories of them, but I learned as a young adult how horrible they were to my parents. My dad’s grandmother (my great grandma), however, was very supportive of my parents. She helped them a lot when they were first getting started. She is a national treasure.

shartnado3

Awesome to hear OP. Warmed my heart reading this. Parenting is hard, and I am in my 30's!! I could not imagine having to do it, as a kid myself essentially, in a time when information wasn't readily available. Kudos to your parents!

Great_Error_9602

My parents have said they felt it was easier because your kid's pediatrician gave you information and told you what books to read. Felt it's harder now because there's an overload of information available and it is hard to parse what's believe and what not to.

holemole

> Felt it's harder now because there's an overload of information available and it is hard to parse what's believe and what not to. It's no harder now to just listen to the pediatrician than it was 30 years ago - a lot of people now just prefer to Google everything and come to their own conclusions, however ill-informed. It's only as difficult as you make it!

SAHairyFun

I find most bad parents aren't really out looking for research on how to improve their parenting. At most, they find other bad parents to validate their bad decisions.

No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom

OP, replying to you directly because I want you to see, but I'm a Dec 87 baby and I'm certain i had the exact same baby blanket! If it had a silk-like white trim around the edges, then it's the same one. The edge part fell off over the years and my mom eventually started using it as her dogs blanket after I moved out 😂 I loved that dog, though, and was glad she enjoyed the blankie as much as I did as a baby.

hnoel88

Yes! I remember snuggling with the satin edging in the summer because we didn’t have AC and it was cool to the touch.

tdtwwwa

Dude! I still have mine, folded up in my hope chest right now at the end of my bed. The edging has also fallen off. I'm 40 :)

Kinae66

I have my tattered and torn baby blanket framed like a fairy flag :)

rakens_with_radies

Hello fellow December 87 baby!

ojg3221

I thought your parents were in their early 20's, but then that's what the 1980's were making everyone look 10 years older.

Escahate

Sounds like you won the lottery!

donutone232

You warm my heart.

ReasonableBox3016

Not just old school cool, just flipping cool as hell. That's huge.

8BillionthHuman

Long Live you and your parents OP. cheers!

Tiramissulover

This is music to my years! I can feel the love in your family.

rox_underscore

I can tell they're great parents because you sound like a great person. That was incredibly insightful and sweet & took me ~ 40 yrs to appreciate.

radicallyrobert

Thanks for saying that. I hope my step son thinks of us in the way. Thanks.

Apprehensive-Cat-111

This made me cry a little 🥰

Blacklion594

As a child of young parents who didnt dedicate their lives to raising me properly, you are extremely blessed.

Lanueria

We live in a different, more disastrous age. Don't be surprised.

el_dingusito

I was a dad at 18, I was young dumb and naive but I raised some good boys. Now that they're grown our dynamic is entirely different but we have a great relationship and they like to hang out with me, so I'll say I was a success in that regard.

redit01

Hella head of hair on ya

hnoel88

I wasn’t even two months old here. I had so much goddamn hair.

kirinmay

you also looked stoned (saying this in a funny way). Looks like you're thinking 'where the hell am i ?! and what is this stuff in my diaper?!

luvub40

It's said that babies with a lot of hair give mom heartburn during pregnancy.

hnoel88

It was true for me! All of mine were born with a full head of hair like I had and the heartburn was HORRIBLE. Apparently whatever hormone stimulates hair growth also causes heartburn. So it’s an old wives’ tale with a scrap of truth to it.

nieko-nereikia

There is actually some science behind it, and I remember reading an actual paper on it when I was recently pregnant as I was curious about my heartburn (which I never had before I was pregnant!). I don’t remember what the paper said as to why it happens, but it’s true that if you suffer with heartburn/acid reflux during pregnancy, your baby is highly likely to be born with a head full of hair :) BTW you were such a cute baby - that’s such a lovely photo of you and your parents!

playballer

My wife never had heartburn before and she thought she was dying. I’ve had it at times my whole life so it was kind of perplexing that she couldn’t self diagnose it and actually went to the doctor a couple times thinking something was wrong. Kid had a full head of hair at birth but then lost it all and was pretty bald most of year 1. Apparently some kids get a puppy coat of hair.

jld2k6

I don't know if there's science behind it, but I've heard from many moms that their kids ended up loving whatever food the mom craved while pregnant lol. Some even said they got cravings for food they can't stand in any other situation and sure enough the kid ended up loving that food too despite the mom hating it once again after birth

HotDiggetyDoge

He looks like Old Gregg

Looks like he's about to ask if you ever drank Bailey's from a shoe.

Exotic_Indication_68

I had the exact same thought.

old_man_null

This dude for sure has drunk Bailey's from a shoe.

KhalTaco88

Damn it. Just commented this.

Independent_Day985

You've seen me. Do you love me?

freewheelinfred

YEP!!!! This is the comment I was looking for

draggingmytail

I’m glad I wasnt the only

PingDingDongBong

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one thinking this.

Selgeron

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I opened this post and immediately hit ctrl-f 'gregg'

jcosta89

Gawd. So glad I wasn’t the only one. Did your dad ask if you ever wanted any baileys?

cowskeeper

You got their hair

hnoel88

I wish I could have kept my dad’s hair. Those black curls were *chef’s kiss*

ssdohc2020

I wish I could have kept my hair. 😐

Hollayo

Same

pentachronic

I also choose this guy's dead hair

HaroldSax

Look on the bright side, brother, our hair is *never* messed up now.

TomServo84

Her dad's jacket also has their hair

Procrastinatingpeas

I was gonna say, who put a wig on that baby?! You look like a doll! :)

opaldibella

Is your dad r/kurtisconner?

urfavvgrace

I was literally just about to say that! They look weirdly identical.

Kevin50cal

I'm 99% sure Kurtis Conner is cosplaying this dude's dad.

zambamboz

thank god I wasn't the only one thinking it

DCtheBREAKER

Someone punched WAY above their weight class in this couple

hnoel88

Yeah but my dad played guitar.

catalammadingdong

Also, is that a Led Zeppelin shirt under what I assume was his signature jacket?

hnoel88

Of course! And yes, he had that jacket and a black leather one with the same kind of fringe that he wore all the time.

jakemg

Your dad looked like the epitome of a cool guy in that era. No wonder your mom went for him.

hnoel88

He was definitely a “cool guy.” Some of my teachers went to school with him and I heard all about it constantly. Everyone was also shocked that he ended up with my mother, who was this prim and proper beauty queen. She was valedictorian and sang in the church choir. I don’t know how they ended up together but I’m so grateful they did.

jakemg

That’s such a cool story. And it’s cool to hear they’re still together after so many years. Thanks for sharing!

Otherwise-Aardvark52

They like… lived an 80s teen movie plot. This sounds better than most 80s teen movies, actually.

Responsible_Oil_5811

We need to make their story into a musical.

hnoel88

I’m a writer and my partner is an actor/musician. Just be on the lookout for “Hair: The Musical (Not THAT Hair, This is a New Hair)” on Broadway.

Ok-Cantaloop

dont forget the 80s dangle earring

icanhazkarma17

*roach clip probably

spiralout1389

Born in 87 and I exist because my dad had a Trans Am. I get it. He played my mom's favorite Scorpions song she was 15 and he was a few years older and yeah. Owning that Trans Am tho and having exactly one night with my mom was pretty much my dad's peak tho lol

NrdNabSen

rocked her like a hurricane?

spiralout1389

Probably not, honestly. She does not have fond memories of that night haha.

NrdNabSen

more of a tropical depression

spiralout1389

Lol she was 15 and didn't really know what good sex and/or bad sex really was just yet. But just from knowing the very little about the man that I do, I feel like it's a pretty safe bet to say that no, he was not in fact a skilled dick slinger lol

A_Humble_Masterpiece

Did he follow the Moskva down to Gorky park?

allothernamestaken

What was her favorite Scorpions song and why was it Rock You Like a Hurricane?

spiralout1389

Because that one is the best one despite them having some other serious bangers?

harleyqueenzel

I swoon for No One Like You.

spiralout1389

Another solid banger. Honestly I love The Scorpions. Yeah a lot of their songs sound the same, but hey it works. Also that was my mom and her boyfriends "song" lol. That boyfriend is also NOT the owner of the Trans Am, and is in fact his cousin, and my mom was mad at said bf and went out with the cousin, my father, to piss him off lol. Hey she was 15 in rural ass Mississippi, so she's definitely learned how to make better choices since then haha. And despite her age and poor decision making has always been just a fantastic mother who stepped the fuck up and made sure I had a better life and didn't follow in her footsteps. Could have been A LOT worse haha

allothernamestaken

Good answer.

k20350

My son is rock and roll all day long. Long hair, band t-shirts, shredded pants. He plays guitar also. His phone blows up nonstop from girls.

hnoel88

I’m dating a drummer. IT’S A THING.

DCtheBREAKER

Lol, that's it! Cool fam, man.

MisplacedLemur

Take my upvote!

cstmoore

Are you sure it wasn't accordion?

UncircumciseMe

Disagree. They both exude 80’s swag.

SparklyRoniPony

That is very typical in the 80’s. Most men were giant dorks because that was the style. Source: I’m five years younger than OP’s parents.

hnoel88

He just exuded confidence and an I don’t give a fuck attitude which my sheltered mother ate up. Any time we look at old pictures she’s like “Look at him. Look at how hot your dad is.” And I’m like “Ew, Mom.” But I think it’s adorable.

Zestybeef10

Are you saying this just to say it? I dont see it

MaterialCarrot

Yeah, she is one lucky lady!

hnoel88

I mean, he does nothing but dote on my mom. So I’d say they both hit the jackpot with each other.

z-eldapin

So Mallory finally married Nick? https://preview.redd.it/uzgoxstn8wyc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0edce464cd6aee8745b9023a216f188bd2d0e16b

hnoel88

I always compare them to Eddie and Nancy in Stranger Things. But damn this is so spot on.

kingtaco_17

*I'm not smart, I'm not cultured and I'm not sophisticated. You know? I'm not no Charles Bronson. -- Nick to the Keaton family*

MisplacedLemur

As long as Zeppelin was playing in the house, you had to grow up an awesome person, I have no doubt.

hnoel88

Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper were staples growing up. When I got older he introduced me to Dio and Judas Priest. My mom is a Gun ‘n Roses fan and apparently they met the band at a concert when she was pregnant with me.

MisplacedLemur

Glad to hear it! My wife & I *still* make music, (we are 'senior') and wife's very favs are Ronnie James and Judas Priest.

hnoel88

My parents play together at bars in town. My mom is a phenomenal vocalist and pianist. My dad still plays guitar and picked up bass a couple years ago.

zipzap21

What did/does your Dad say when someone claims that Pink Floyd is the best rock and roll band of all time?

hnoel88

Hold on. I’ll ask.

hnoel88

I’ll have to answer tomorrow, because he’s asleep (he works at 4am). But I do know that Pink Floyd was not one of the regular bands playing at my house.

Invisiblechimp

Old School Cool posts usually make me just feel old, but not this one because I'm around halfway between you and your parents' age. I feel simultaneously young and old.

Purple_Pieman

Does your pop still rock that long dangling ear ring?

hnoel88

Isn’t that so badass?! He kept it until about his mid twenties, then became an electrician and took off all his jewelry.

Ckorvuz

Just born and already rocking that anime protagonist hair.

Smodphan

They look like really nice people who you refused to let sleep that entire year. I kept a journal with quick comments every time my wife or I had to get out of bed to tend to our two kids. Usually its just quick comments like "You're screaming a hungry cry. I think its a lie...yeah, it was..." The journals are packed full of toddler stuff they did. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them, but I love them.

EdithWhartonsFarts

So awesome. Google 'ice cube high school jheri curl,' it seems like your dad was tapping into a sweet vibe back then.

hnoel88

That’s amazing. So, my dad really leaned into the “Satanic panic” thing going on back then. He liked music and he played DnD and was thus labeled a menace. He then fully leaned into the whole thing by growing out his hair and wearing insane jewelry. My mom’s parents hated him, so he left a Sex Pistols tape in their car just to piss them off. He just rebelled against everything and fully leaned into what he had been labeled as, while just being a super sweet and fiercely intelligent guy who worked really hard to get ahead in life.

EdithWhartonsFarts

That's awesome. Rebels are my favorite people.

ThehoundIV

Your dad looks like every Australian guy I’ve ever met lol

cdoswalt

Your mom is Nancy McKeon?

needsexyboots

I was thinking Ally Sheedy but that works too!

slagblahighpriestess

Wow. I was 18 that year too, and your Mom looks like a much prettier version of me from back then!

hnoel88

Aww! My mother is absolutely a true beauty. I take after my dad. Ha.

SlideItIn100

Your hair was epic!

thenakesingularity10

I feel that you grew up in a family filled with love. <3

holyembalmer

Old Gregg?

chromedisguise

Is your Dad Old Gregg??

codymason84

Your dad looks cool as fuck

El-sosa13

My wife and I had our first daughter at 17/18. 14yrs later and still together 😊. Also look at all that hair! Cute baby pic

WebTasty1313

Picture of them today???

hnoel88

I’ll have to see if I can find one! They don’t take many pictures together, and both of them do that old person thing where they take pictures from below (which is hilarious because they’re only 54). I’ll see if I can find something decent.

spookyluke246

Your dad looks cool as fuck.

randomdude5566

Mom is rocking the Christmas wreath pin thing and dad is just plain rockin'

rpinhead88

Hell ya, I'm '88 and my parents have been married 35 years. Congrats to them!

Ntr0s

Your dad is a Zeppelin fan. You are awesome by default. Well done.

puss_parkerswidow

I graduated high school that year at 17, in Texas, and I had more legal rights then, than a woman in Texas does now. Your family picture is great, and you were born at a good time to what looks like good people.

anonymous_143111

Were you a baby hair model? What a great head of hair!

ChemoManiac77

Look at you all comfy and stuff instead of using the valuable time to buy up real estate. Shame.

ReallyRedOnTheHead

You had some really pretty hair!

MattAtPlaton

Your dad looked like he said "yo" a lot.

NarcanBob

Holy Head of Hair!!!

TempleofSpringSnow

We were probably born only a week or two apart. Glad your parents made it. ✊

hnoel88

November ‘88!

Temporary-Leather905

Beautiful family

Jccali1214

So do we all agree your dad is a Joseph Quinn/Eddie look-a-like?

merileyjr

1. Nice head of hair! 2. Mom is foxy therefore Dad must be cool therefore Awesome Parents! Congrats!

Accomplished_Pen980

I see them in a Smokey room. The smell of wine and cheap perfume.

AbbreviationsNo6863

I have that same baby blanket, better known as blankey.

hnoel88

I had totally forgotten about that blanket but when I posted this picture I felt all kinds of nostalgia.

I have it too, I call mine Kiki!!! I still have it (and use it 🥲) 32 years later.

Educational_Idea997

Your mother is a cutie. Your father looks like a wet dog coming out of the rain and you have a lot of hair. Heartwarming story.
