Here's a Dutch company working to clean up all the filth in the ocean and stop further growth at the: [https://theoceancleanup.com/](https://theoceancleanup.com/help-clean/) Mr Beast and a bunch of other youtubers promoted and fundraised for it a while back under #TeamSeas And you can help! Donate, fundraise, or help for free by doing survey work on nearby rivers - [Do your part, citizen!](https://theoceancleanup.com/help-clean/) >Microplastics Microplastics are a much trickier problem, but progress is being made on several fronts [Irish teen invents method to filter microplastics from oceans](https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/irish-teen-invents-method-remove-microplastics-ocean-wins/story?id=64731771) [Bacteria able to digest PET plastic](https://new.nsf.gov/news/genetically-modified-bacteria-break-down-plastics) One of the biggest challenges is creating viable alternatives to plastics that are readily biodegradable under landfill conditions, but there has been a surge of interest on this front recently. But really, I think getting used to reusables + soap is a better option overall, and paper when needed. We've been doing it for thousands of years and it's worked fine. I switched over as much as possible and don't even notice.

ZoidsFanatic

I was going to come and comment about Ocean Cleanup. They deserve *much* more attention as they’re making actual strides and progress.

Then take my upvote, fellow clean ocean enjoyer!

I read that coral reefs can grow back to healthy again in as little as 4 years. There also might be far more coral on the planet than we thought. Many countries are creating larger marine protected areas and banning bottom trawling South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands prohibited krill fishing in 17000 km² of its marine protected area Whales in NZ, Tahiti, and the Cook Islands were given personhood status

Kelp farms are really taking off, they create habitat for fish while producing sustainable inputs for a variety of super unsustainable industries. And while kelp grows it sequesters co2 and excess nutrients in the ocean which helps to prevent ocean acidification.

chamomile_tea_reply

Fisheries are becoming a lot more sustainable globally, and are already so in a large number of OECD countries. [Check out this report](https://www.oecd.org/agriculture/topics/fisheries-and-aquaculture/fish-stocks.htm#:~:). I suggest looking at the graphs, and also previous reports to see the progress we have made in recent years/decades. Despite the headlines fish stocks are doing quite well. https://preview.redd.it/74c9kin04nvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b28123ec3c47387a283f96c5d8e72435611d551

I don’t know of any good news but I can tell you about something you can do to help that won’t cost a dime. There’s an internet browser/app called OceanHero that works like safari or Google but the revenue from every search goes to cleaning plastic out of the oceans.

The garbage patches have evolved their own ecosystems of creatures that thrive in that environment and sometimes consume the garbage. Life finds a way.

thismangodude

Saw an article about some parts of the great barrier reef seeing most growth in 30 or so years?

jumptouchfall

well my friend, the good news is, its still there. You're welcome

TesticularVibrations

> I also know that we as a human species wouldn’t just let this simply occur without a fight. Are you aware of the extent of environmental damage humans have, and continued to have, caused? You seem to be under some critical misapprehension about the relationship between humans and the environment

Right?! Sorry to burst everyone's bubbles, but: "Warming trend could represent a major change to Earth systems that cannot be reversed on any human time scale" (from WaPo) By [Scott Dance](https://www.washingtonpost.com/people/scott-dance/?itid=ai_top_dances)March 20, 2024 "At this time last year, scientists [watched in disbelief as the world’s oceans surged to record levels of warmth](https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/03/21/ocean-temperatures-record-warm-climate/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2) and wondered what could have triggered it. The jump in sea surface temperatures [was more dramatic than anything seen before](https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/06/14/record-warm-ocean-temperatures/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2). The scientists explored a link to El Niño, the climate pattern known for warming up the Pacific Ocean, and potential warming influences from diminished shipping liner pollution and a major volcanic eruption. But nothing explained the influx of warmth as it held up for months on end and spread heat waves across nearly all of the oceans’ surfaces..."

Most of the ocean news is not good, but OP implicitly recognizes that in the post and specifically asks for news in the opposite direction. No need for bubble bursting; this is not the place. Save that for the denialists.

Johundhar

And: "The Widest-Ever Global Coral Crisis Will Hit Within Weeks, Scientists Say Rising sea temperatures around the planet have caused a bleaching event that is expected to be the most extensive on record." NYT

FarthingWoodAdder

Dude, we know that there is a ton of bad stuff happening in the ocean right now, nobody is denying that. OP just wanted to know if there was any GOOD news about the ocean as of late.  You don’t need to come in here and rain on everyone’s parade.
