There's a thing we call separating the art of the artist. Just because you're playing YanSim doesn't necessarily mean you're supporting creepazoid Alex. There's many people in this subreddit who played the game but never gave that man-child any support to begin with. That being said, we wound up critiquing the game for its many flaws. You wouldn't find those many YouTube videos about people roasting the game for its poor game design and coding if they were supporting Alex just by playing the game, lol. Sounds like your friend is very misguided and probably has no clue of what I've mentioned above. Hopefully you can reconcile with your friend but if not, oh well. It is what it is.
I personally don’t believe that “separating art from artist” works in this situation. Unless he hands the game development over to someone else I’m personally not going to play the game. If he’s still planning to work on the game and actively update it either now or in the future and people are playing it, it’s still supporting him in some shape or form. Not to mention there’s already issues/controversy with the game itself that I’m sure we all know about already.

Honestly, the only way you can actually support him is to pay for his Patreon and other means. The "official" builds of YanSim are free as free gets (AKA he gets no bucks back when you play it whatsoever), and unlike consuming *other forms of media with problematic authors,* will NOT in any way benefit Alex, then yeah you can separate art from artist
