The show is becoming so main stream mad Mel may end up being more famous than kiper. Weird dynamic and Mel kiper doesn’t really seem like a guy that wants to be the butt of a joke.
Real Mel has really only ever been known for his slicked back hair and using a more than necessary amount of buzz words when talking about draft prospects. And he only really got popular because he was one of the first guys on TV who specialized in focusing on the draft. Now that there's so many more sites and analysts out there doing draft coverage (a lot of them as good or better than Mel), he's lost his fame.
Thank you, Mel found a niche at the right time. No doubt he has put in millions, annnnnd, millions of draft research hours in. But there a better outlets now that do this.
But make no bones about it he’s the OG in the draft game. Ty doing this certainty is a nod to that. If Mel can’t see it and laugh then his time has truly passed.
Happened to me just yesterday, had day 2 of the draft on my phone while I was driving and Mel came on, I said to myself "no shit, they brought ty on to the main espn broadcast?!" Took me a second to realize that ty has Mel down THAT GOOD
Yeah, real Mel had an appearance on the Rich Eisen show a few weeks ago (pre-draft). They talked a bit, and Rich did bring up that Mad Mel is on ESPN now and asked if they'd ever met.
Mel said they hadn't but that he enjoyed the Pat McAfee show and liked the Mad Mel character.
Also, back in the day, real Mel was in a "sketch" with Frank Caliendo's Mel Kiper. So it's not like he hasn't had some experience with this before. I do hope they have a show down someday lol.
Ty gets a weird amount of heat about it as being “dumb” but the bit is too good not to do.
