Yeah this, it harmonises with the ears nicely and looks very cohesive, and makes a good contrast with the grey. Since you've got a small design with a simple colour scheme, I think it works well to have just one accent colour.
That one actually does use the same colors as the ears, just less of the highlight color (if you look carefully, the top of the glasses uses the same color as the middle of the ear).
That one and the first one immediately popped out to me as well. I’d have to say, the one you stated is definitely better, though, so I’ll put my vote in for that one as well.
I think the greens and the blues are not visually different enough and in game characters details are important.
I would go for any of the red, yellow or orange however do you have the character fleshed out? Colors of ties and glasses can communicate a message if you have a storyline or want to build enviormental storytelling
Thanks for the feedback!
This isn't a project that's story-driven. Blutters is a mathematician (mathe-cat-ition?) and recruiting them to your clowder gives you a numbers-related unlock, and that's pretty much the extent of the character development.
His original design had a light blue tie (the color in 3-1), but at the larger scale here, I think it gets lost in the grey of the coat, so I tend to agree with your assessment.
[A pink tie is used as a symbol of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo.](https://uwaterloo.ca/math/about/our-history/legend-pink-tie)
As a colorblind person, a lot of these just sort of vanish. The best ones for my eyes are the ones that have significant VALUE contrast, like the first one or the middle of the bottom row.
Note: The best thing anyone can do to help account for colorblind people is to look at value after deciding on color. You might think the red and green you picked have good contrast, but a colorblind person might not. Convert the image to grayscale, and see if they still have contrast. If not, consider darkening or lightening some of the shades. A darker red, a lighter green, whatever.
This is also just generally good art technique, not just because of colorblindness but to really make certain elements pop out. Convert your image to grayscale, and see what pops and what fades away.
I like the contrast from the orange one. It seems to stand out just the right amount without being too bold. I also feel it plays well with the fur colour.
Vote tallied!
The game is called Cats vs Aliens, and it's like a cozier Vampire Survivors, with cats and aliens instead of vampire slayers and vampire creatures, and an added layer of base building and crafting. Shooting for simple and approachable in gameplay with a weirdly cute aesthetic.
I think the orange one creates the more recognisable character at a glance. With design like this I unfocus my vision and see which one has the most recognisable shapes and colours whilst burry. Just like if the character is in motion on screen or in your out vision. So the reds, oranges and yellows stand out the most. Orange being my favourite.
Thanks! The folks over on Discord are also saying purple, whereas most folks here are saying the warmer colors. I'm wondering if the color scheme of Discord vs the color scheme of Reddit is making a difference in people's choices.
My musings aside, vote tallied and thanks!
I'd say it is, different colours can make people feel different ways, it's why fast food restaurants use red and yellow often, it creates a sense of urgency and want for food
I wanna know why you made the cat so dummy thicc. Also I vote the light blue tie second from the bottom on the left. Different enough that you notice it without it being all you look at. Human eyes are drawn to light and color so you don’t want too harsh a contrast.
1) As my grandmother used to tell me: to make you ask questions (it worked!)
2) Fun fact: that one was the original color on the first design pass. I was debating whether it needs changing so you can tell it's a tie, or whether letting it being washed out was a better choice. You make a good point here.
Orange, gold, light green, dark green, dark blue, and purple all look good. Id say not red, because it could also read visually as a floppy tongue instead of a tie lol
*Edited to add: I like purple best, because he looks the most serious to me in purple.
HA! I didn't even think of it reading as a tongue. I thought a light teal one looked like drool, which is why I didn't include it here. Brains are wild!
Votes tallied.
i think the grey gets a little lost, i like the muted yellow underneath the red or the regular yellow!! i think it would be the most complementary to his coat.
I think it depends heavily on the vibe of the character. If they’re gonna be more mundane like an office worker or something similar then I’d go tan or dark blue. If they’re more like a cool/fun teacher then maybe yellow or orange.
Also, side note, I’m kind of concerned in my vision cuz I see everyone saying that the bottom middle is red but it looks closer to pink to me…sort of like that raspberry color? Not the color of the actual fruit but the one everyone always associates with raspberries, y’know?
My vote is for yellow or orange. The contrast makes the character easy to spot, especially if there's a very busy background. Sometimes games are difficult to play if there's not a lot of contrasting colors and you have poor eyesight
I would say bottom middle since I like it matching with the ears and you said that he is a mathematician and math is obviously red (everyone who says otherwise is wrong)
Use a sorting algorithm to find the best one. For example, start with the first two, decide which one you like better, and then delete the other one. Repeat until you have the best one.
Also, context about the game and this character's personality would be helpful.
The blues are more subtly, probably better for a background character that isn’t meant to draw your attention. Top row stands out more and would be better for a character that you have to find or talk to (contrast draws the eye nicely). The bottom mid is my favorite though
HOLY FLIP, IT’S TALLY HALL!!
(Also I pick orange because it looks like he was born at the age of zero in Detroit Michigan, in a hospital that no longer exists)
The first one and the eighth one look the best to me. However, the funny thing to do in game would likely be for the colors to change every time the cat is off-screen. Considering you’ve already made the alternates, you could theoretically use this as an option to have them all in game if you can’t decide on one.
Yellow or orange but I tend more towards yellow (the top right one)
Most cartoon protagonist have the primary colors as a scheme.
My favorite examples are Sora from kingdom hearts, Sonic or Mario.
Or from anime, Luffy, Naruto, Son Goku.
I would not go with a warmer color. They stand out too much and just look odd. I think it makes the character confusing. Personally I prefer the dark blue
I feel like the ties and the glasses should be different colors. When they're the same, a color that looks good for the tie looks bad for the glasses, and vice versa.
I love the grey/magenta glasses, but I prefer the orange/dark green/dark purple ties.
2nd Row, 3rd Cat - Glasses and tie stand out without making the sprite overly cartoony.
Although, I'd say it definitely depends on the colour scheme of the game and how much screen space this sprite takes up!
I think any from the top row and the cat located at 4-2 looks the best. The colors are more distinguished from the cats fur. The blues and greens just blend in too much.
I think yellow/gold is my favorite because he looks like an absolute rockstar. I also really like orange… would adding some black stripes to the orange tie work at all, as an homage to Garfield/Heathcliff?
What vibe he needs to pass?
Without dialogue or background:
Orange and yellow makes me think it is younger and more energetic/agile
Dark green, dark blue and the purple one makes think it is more mature but not senile. Feels like I can actually trust his decision and he would respect others opinions
White/grey, older cat. More senile
The last red one. I like it but not sure what vibes it gives me. Maybe it's tired from everybody's bullshit, just wants to get home and relax on his cat tree
Something that contrasts with the rest of the character, and maybe also what generally contrasts with the world? The red, orange, or yellow pops, and presumably there isn't a ton of those colors making up the world.
Great character and animation!
When you say multiple colors are not an option, do you mean you can't mix them, or do you mean they can't change colors? If it's the second, I would like to propose the white glasses with the dark green tie
Depends on how much you want certain elements to stand out. Are the glasses and tie supposed to be understated, or are they an important part of the character design?
Is this character individualistic or more of a corporate drone kind of character?
Blues and greens kinda blend in with the cats fur too much - both reds tie in the inside of the ear nicely but for variation I like the orange because it still blends nicely with the ear color but it’s not exactly the same - white is nice and easy but in my opinion it makes the cat look old/elder so if that’s not a vibe you’re going for maybe not?
I think a red like the lowest row middle coudl work well - have you tried a version using the same colors as the ears?
Yeah this, it harmonises with the ears nicely and looks very cohesive, and makes a good contrast with the grey. Since you've got a small design with a simple colour scheme, I think it works well to have just one accent colour.
That one actually does use the same colors as the ears, just less of the highlight color (if you look carefully, the top of the glasses uses the same color as the middle of the ear).

If it's a mathematician definitely either dark green or white frame. Those gave me scientist vibes.
Thanks! That's helpful. Votes tallied.
[A pink tie is used as a symbol of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo.](https://uwaterloo.ca/math/about/our-history/legend-pink-tie)
Ooo interesting.
I agree with the dark green!
Agreed Maths is green, just like English is red and History is yellow.
Math is defo red and English is blue or purple. History being yellow is just objectively correct no matter what though.
No, blue is science, green in math, red is history, and yellow/orange is english. Obviously
No way blue is scienceee. You've gotta be trolling.
Chemistry is Blue, Physics is Purple and Biology is Dark Blue sorry to tell you.
I can see individual fields being blue but science as a whole is green. And biology is definitely a very light green. Like lime colored.
Can I just say that I'm enthralled by this debate?
It's awesome that you've assigned specific colors to school subjects. I love me some color-coding.
Mathemakitten?
YES!

Yellow and the red at the bottom middle look great
Thanks! Votes tallied.
Bottom row, middle; I think having his accessories match the hue of his inner ears makes him more memorable.
Thanks for the feedback! Vote tallied.

Thanks for the suggestions, they're quite helpful. I'll keep them in mind going forward.
Thanks for the explanation in the note! I need to start doing that.
Number 3 yellow is the winner for me
i agree, very eye-catching and distinctly separate from the ear colour unlike the reds and pinks
i agree with that! i think the reds and pinks look like big floppy toungues..
Simple. Every time the asset loads it selects a random color. No characters mention it. If I must pick one. Bottom Middle.
I do like that idea! Vote for the bottom middle tallied.
I'd go with the orange one (second on the top row), as it contrasts with his bluish-teal fur.
Thanks! Vote tallied.
I like the contrast from the orange one. It seems to stand out just the right amount without being too bold. I also feel it plays well with the fur colour.
Thanks! Orange and a cool grey have been a go-to for me in past projects as well. Vote tallied.
Yellow-orange! It sticks out yet can not be mistaken for a tounge. Super cool design! What is the game about?
Vote tallied! The game is called Cats vs Aliens, and it's like a cozier Vampire Survivors, with cats and aliens instead of vampire slayers and vampire creatures, and an added layer of base building and crafting. Shooting for simple and approachable in gameplay with a weirdly cute aesthetic.
My vote is for the bottom red version.
Orange or yellow. I like the way they pop!
The yellow one, not the gold, so the fourth one, definitely stands out to me the most.
Business Cat flies around the world
Took way to long to find this reference. I was thinking I'd have to do it
Ikr? Thought there would be more people referencing it.
I'm assuming the artist has never seen the video but it's crazy how the walk animation feels just like Business Cat
Blue, purple, or grey ties. The rest seem to busy/clash with the overall color scheme imo!
Thanks! The folks over on Discord are also saying purple, whereas most folks here are saying the warmer colors. I'm wondering if the color scheme of Discord vs the color scheme of Reddit is making a difference in people's choices. My musings aside, vote tallied and thanks!

the red at the bottom and dark blue look really pleasing to the eye (atleast for me)
I like orange

No worries, your vision is fine (probably?), it is more of a magenta color. And thanks for the feedback! Votes tallied :D
It's a sort of red with a pink tone, a deep hot pink
My vote is for yellow or orange. The contrast makes the character easy to spot, especially if there's a very busy background. Sometimes games are difficult to play if there's not a lot of contrasting colors and you have poor eyesight
Red or dark green
Dark red or dark green!
Yellow is easier to see but orange can create a theme
My favorite has got to be the lower red one so I would go with that one
The orange is MINT! My eyes darted to it immediately.
I would go with one of the reds, to match the ears. Simple color pallette is best IMO
The red because it matches the inner ear
Orange pops out the most
Orange
I'd say bottom centre looks best.
Red, yellow, or purple.
Middle bottom
Orange stands out the most
Orange. Also, the tail looks like the left arm when his left arm goes behind his back. Maybe just for be but just wanted to let you know
I can't unsee the tie as a tongue
Is that a tally hall reference??
I would say bottom middle since I like it matching with the ears and you said that he is a mathematician and math is obviously red (everyone who says otherwise is wrong)
tally hall no way yellow imo
I like top right, yellow-gold. He looks like a G, and the tie is on point.
I see 12 perfect characters.
Use a sorting algorithm to find the best one. For example, start with the first two, decide which one you like better, and then delete the other one. Repeat until you have the best one. Also, context about the game and this character's personality would be helpful.

Top right
The Orange one pops
HOLY FLIP, IT’S TALLY HALL!! (Also I pick orange because it looks like he was born at the age of zero in Detroit Michigan, in a hospital that no longer exists)
I would choose something that stick out...either yellow or green. The others kind of blend with the cat colour
Definitely Red!! And especially the one on the bottom row
Orange
The darkest blue is my personal favorite. He looks ready for business
I like 3, 7 and 12
Teal and Pink look the best imo
Orange
The first one and the eighth one look the best to me. However, the funny thing to do in game would likely be for the colors to change every time the cat is off-screen. Red in the middle on the bottom.
bottom left
Yellow or orange but I tend more towards yellow (the top right one) Most cartoon protagonist have the primary colors as a scheme. My favorite examples are Sora from kingdom hearts, Sonic or Mario. Or from anime, Luffy, Naruto, Son Goku.
First row, third column. Yellow glasses and blue tie, if you want to combine colors.
Top row is best imo. Nice contrast with the fur
I would not go with a warmer color. They stand out too much and just look odd. I think it makes the character confusing. Personally I prefer the dark blue
definitely yellow! it adds so much to the character imo
Yellow! Oe yellow tie ,red glasses
I'll have to try some with complementary colors. Thanks! Vote tallied.
If it's a mathematician, dark green for certain.
I like the grey and the turquoise they look professional
I feel like the ties and the glasses should be different colors. When they're the same, a color that looks good for the tie looks bad for the glasses, and vice versa. I love the grey/magenta glasses, but I prefer the orange/dark green/dark purple ties.
First or last
I think it would be a good idea to change the value to grayscale and eliminate any that blend in too much
Purble
Light blue.
2nd Row, 3rd Cat - Glasses and tie stand out without making the sprite overly cartoony. Although, I'd say it definitely depends on the colour scheme of the game and how much screen space this sprite takes up!
Pick red or yellow The blues and green tie/glasses don't translate well with the cats fur color behind it.
For me I like the blue green/dark cyan one. The colour has enough difference to not blend to the skin tone but isn't to vibrant to distract.
Bottom middle, imo.
ORNG ORANG ORENG PLZZ I LOVE ORNG
The 3rd, yellow/ gold looks best to me.
red!
I think the purple at the middle-bottom works the most. Consistently palettes with the inside of his ears.
I think any from the top row and the cat located at 4-2 looks the best. The colors are more distinguished from the cats fur. The blues and greens just blend in too much.
1-3 / yellow Contrasts well with the blue/grey of the fur.
orange or green
Red middle bottom pops enough to be visually readable on screen and matches the inside ear color well enough.
Yellow on top right and the Red from down middle looks good
What is the personality for the character? Ig serious grey if kinda funny
I think yellow/gold is my favorite because he looks like an absolute rockstar. I also really like orange… would adding some black stripes to the orange tie work at all, as an homage to Garfield/Heathcliff?
What vibe he needs to pass? Without dialogue or background: Orange and yellow makes me think it is younger and more energetic/agile Dark green, dark blue and the purple one makes think it is more mature but not senile. Pink or gold
2A, 3B, 4C
I like the first one.
Bottom row middle one for sure! Yellow is really cute too, but overall that one catches my eye better.
Depends on how much you want certain elements to stand out. Are the glasses and tie supposed to be understated, or are they an important part of the character design? Is this character individualistic or more of a corporate drone kind of character?
I like the pink or the red. seems the most business catty.
Definitely red
I think the grey makes him look extra serious, like a little scientist.
The red one just fells right
I like the pink
Red
This is the army we all need
After seeing your comment about it being math related, I'm leaning towards red. Idk why but red tie seems accountant like to me lol
I had a math teacher that loved orange and yellow. They also pop out well. I like the orange myself. Top right
Orange suits the most in my opinion
Dark blue tie is 👍🏽👍🏽
First two on the bottom row. I’m guessing this game is going to be awesome,
definitely the red at the bottom! it's a great contrast while a lot of the others are muted or get lost
Bottom left pink one
I like yellow (3) best, stands out and is a nice color palate all together
Orange
Number 3
Have him change every time he appears
Red or fuchsia
Do pink it’ll fit quite well
I'm hearing dubstep business cat by the weebl
Why cant these be unlockable color options that a player can customize?
The pink one gets me
Orange or grey. Are u looking to stand out or blend in? That should b part of y a color is picked
The reds could look like a tongue to some players, I say the light colors are best grey yellow
Anything from the top row.
I'm digging the orange and yellow
It'd be kinda cool if the player was able to choose for their selves
Dark green
Top left or bottom middle for me. They contrast well and maintain the professional look.
I have to say that red, white, and dark blue look the best. Might I also suggest black?
I like the purple 💜 but choose anything but the white that one is not a good one
The light yellow (#4) or the black (#6) I'm colorblind and the only one I can't see clearly is the pink on the bottom left.
rgb
Bottom row, middle 👍
I like the middle one on the very bottom row. It looks similar to his ears which kinda makes them pop more in my opinion.
There needs to be contrast between the color chosen and the color of the cat’s fur. Law of graphic design. That should narrow down your decision.
Center column’s colours pop against the grey character
Number 3 Yellow.
Obviously purple
Middle bottom row or red, idk why it just looks more visually appealing to me
All of them, different color every time you meet him.
personally a fan of the red at the very bottom, the red color works well with the color of his fur. red ties in general are iconic as well
The lightest blue is my preference
Bottom middle or bottom right
Red!
I would say the purple. It pulls the red and blue of the character together to create a complimentary accent color.
I like the first one or the last two. I like the look of the frames in the white/gray, I'm not a huge fan of the colored frames personally
Top right to me. It just sticks out best
Red!
Dark Green. I think it fits a character who wants to be left alone to focus on their studies. Plus I love green.
Either the red on the bottom or the yellow on top.
Red or hot pink, the hot pink one looks best (bottom middle)
i like the teal
First column, third row--or third column, fourth row! (Blue or grey, blue is for less serious, grey is for more serious)
I think yellow contrasts the fur the best
green
It all comes down to opinion. I know you said multiple colors are not an option, but you could allow the player to choose
I like the Red and Orange fits
Bottom middle
Top middle
blue because its my favorite color :)
Why no black?
