Ram is a fast memory where you can read things you saved very fast. This virtual ram is not real ram, is memory from the normal storage, which is used as ram but is really slow, if you have 8 or more ram you should turn it off and your phone is gonna be faster. If you have low ram like 4 or 6, then you should consider keeping it on, because is better to have a slow virtual ram than not having at all for some things haha.
no turn it off, it makes your phone slower and also decreases storage life as well.
instead of that use universal android debloater and disable manufacturer junk apps.
Realistically you won't even be able to fully used up all that 12gb ram itself, so no need for extra ram which also in turn that might slow it down instead if leave it on
Even my 8gb phone is still able to play genshin impact smoothly so you need not worry about turning it off
I was using this feature for the wuthering waves game and it somehow boosted my game by a few frames but that is just my initial testing, no conclusion as of yet. I'm also using poco F6.
This. To expand on this topic, virtual ram does random multiple small writings as any app is executed, if the implementation made by your phone manufacturer it's at least decent, then it will write to different parts of your storage chip, damaging it a little bit on each sector, instead of doing it all in a small portion leaving that section destroyed (that was what Xiaomi did on older phones, don't know if it's still done this way).
Not directly, I forked custom ROMs for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro (with a software fixable screen burning problem) and Poco X3 Pro (with basically a kill switch, it's heat dissipation was so bad that an update killed it) while making that I also worked on fixing various software related issues present on BUGui, after that and some Magisk both phones were definitely better than stock. Then I ditched Xiaomi and bought a Moto as Pixel was not available.
ROM isn't meant to be written too many times 1 day it'll fail and the consequences will be catastrophic (you pass on read only mode meaning you can't write storage anymore)
Digital ram is what the name says. It uses storage as extra ram, but it isnt beneficial in any way. When your phone supposedly needs more ram, it uses the digital ram, but the digital ram is significantly slower than your actual ram. And also, there are no moments in which you will use all of your phones ram, it knows how to do proper ram management.
So, in reality, not only digital ram is useless, it also takes up space and can potentially harm your phone if its ever used. Its only recommended to turn it on on phones with 6gb of ram or less, and even then you shouldnt go above 3gb of digital ram.
Yes it is perfectly okay to turn it off even if you are a heavy gamer. In fact it's beneficial if you do, you don't need that extra RAM anyways. It'll save your battery and less ROM degradation.
12GB are your real, physical memory space that you have in your phone.
the 8GB, is your "fake" memory, it uses a portion of the storage (in this case, 8GB) as a "reservation" if it ever runs out of memory to allocate.
or if you're into rhe technical, that 8GB part is your swapfile.
`top` literally says 8GB are for swap, wtf?
if you're knowledgable enough, you can set a custom swapfile size. but i don't know how much different it is in android as opposed to your average linux distro
I've a poco x6 pro with 12 GB ram and 512 GB variant and I turned this ram extension feature off because it makes your phone slow by consuming internal storage of your phone.
Digital ram its a marketing strategy it uses alot of ur processor to make ram from rom which results in battery drainage quicker , its slightly better for those who have 3gb ram and a. Good processor
As others said, the 8GBs are using your "hard drive" as a RAM. The problem is that your hard drive is milion times slower than even the cheapest RAM. I highly suggest turning it off
Everything above (uses storage, thus the storage goes faster through it's lifespan.
8, 10, 12 GB is plenty, heck, Even 6GB should be enough for most users.
Real RAM is much faster, the additional ram is kind of useless unless you have less than 6gb ram.
And ofcourse it's a marketing trick so they can boast a "whopping 20gb ram" which is double that of many other phones, except, it isn't. Not really.
It's not useless, It does what they say. It acts as more ram.
But it's better to turn it off.
Your phone has 12GB of physical RAM, and it's using 8GB of storage as virtual RAM. Honestly, I recommed you to turn off the extra RAM, since you already have good RAM by hardware and you do not get value out of that, it's just a slower RAM and you're just burning 8GB of storage
Protip: go to settings, and type in: 'show memory status'.
Whenever you now go into the recent app overview (basically the open app overview) it shows the amount of memory available to you in the top right.
Currently, i have some apps open and for me it shows I have 8.6gb of 12 gb available. I feel i never even used anywhere near that 12gb. Ever.
That's basically the memory fusion thingy
Just turn it off, like you have 12gigs of ram and why waste 8gb of storage for virtual ram that is slower than the actual ram itself
shortens life span of ROM memory, is slower than actual ram, almost never needed since the average for low budget is like 8gb of ram now, worse battery life.
It's only to speed up the way apps open (rumor idk) and to enhance multitasking capabilities. But it's kind of a gimmick since it uses some of your internal storage as an exchange for extra RAM. Also, it gives out worse battery life.
It is because they do not know they cannot turn it off actually. The default ZRAM size is 4 GB and it cannot be lowered. TL;DR Memory extension OFF == Memory extension by 4GB.
And you are talking out of your ass.
EVERYONE: do not pay attention to this misconception of LunaAzure. zRAM is swap space on your flash memory ("storage"). zRAM is part of RAM that is compressed.
LOL; You are truely misleading people. It is the zRAM which is impacted by sorta memory extension function featured by Android phone manufacturers.
What you're want to demonstrate is Windows style virtual memory paging which is not utilized that much from POSIX systems. Android's memory allocation system is pretty well optimized for zRAM so the standard Android(aka AOSP) adopted this method from long time ago.
Yeah, Dunning-Kruger is strong in you. I truly (note spelling) went to the horse's mouth, [developer.android.com](http://developer.android.com), and looked up zRAM there.
I want you to look up the allocated size of zRAM for each setup. You will post no more replies from then XD
It's not a simple swap and I can say with confidence that you ARE misleading the people with the terms.
I will post no more replies after this one because I'm fed up with you. Good bye, and good riddance. (Oh, and if you want to convince people, links are always greater than "GOOGLE IT YOURSELF"; you want to convince, \*you\* do the work)

8gb are digital ram expansion, pls turn it off
Can you tell me why to turn it off ? I know it doesn't do much as ram but does it also have any disadvantages?
Ram is a fast memory where you can read things you saved very fast. This virtual ram is not real ram, is memory from the normal storage, which is used as ram but is really slow, if you have 8 or more ram you should turn it off and your phone is gonna be faster. If you have low ram like 4 or 6, then you should consider keeping it on, because is better to have a slow virtual ram than not having at all for some things haha.
I'm running a Poco f6 12/512 version and it has 6 gigs of ram expansion, I should probably keep that on?
He's talking about 4GB or 6GB of actual ram, you have 12GB so definitely turn it off.
no turn it off, it makes your phone slower and also decreases storage life as well. instead of that use universal android debloater and disable manufacturer junk apps.
I'll be installing root again only for this
sure , altho you can debloat with that universal debloater without rooting , it just needs a computer.
Realistically you won't even be able to fully used up all that 12gb ram itself, so no need for extra ram which also in turn that might slow it down instead if leave it on Even my 8gb phone is still able to play genshin impact smoothly so you need not worry about turning it off
I was using this feature for the wuthering waves game and it somehow boosted my game by a few frames but that is just my initial testing, no conclusion as of yet. I'm also using poco F6.
It's only used if your ram is used completely
Nada I've been reading other comments saying it also damages your storage, but I'm not really sure on that. I would use it if I had 4 or 6 GB of ram
Storage can be writed a límited times. Using as virtual ram Will reach this limit faster
This. To expand on this topic, virtual ram does random multiple small writings as any app is executed, if the implementation made by your phone manufacturer it's at least decent, then it will write to different parts of your storage chip, damaging it a little bit on each sector, instead of doing it all in a small portion leaving that section destroyed (that was what Xiaomi did on older phones, don't know if it's still done this way).
it's up to the drive controller, similar to SSDs
Not necessarily, there are SoCs with built in UFS/eMMC controllers which are controlled by vendor's settings
interesting, do you work in this field?
Why? Also with poco F6?
Digital ram is what the name says. It uses storage as extra ram, but it isnt beneficial in any way. When your phone supposedly needs more ram, it uses the digital ram, but the digital ram is significantly slower than your actual ram. And also, there are no moments in which you will use all of your phones ram, it knows how to do proper ram management. #1 tip: TURN IT OFF.
How to turn it off?
additional settings > memory extension > off
Need reboot btw
yep
Settings>Additional settings>Memory extension>Off
Is it good if its pocof5 pro? Mine say 12.0+6.0gb Snapdragon 8+ gen 1 mobile platform Octa-core max 3.0ghz
It's bad in all phones, it will degrade your ROM faster than usual. Also, you don't need more than 12GB ram anyways. So you should turn it off.
Im ignorant on the phone specially on poco phone is it okay to turn it off even im a heavy gamer? Sorry for asking. And thank you for replying
Yes it is perfectly okay to turn it off even if you are a heavy gamer. In fact it's beneficial if you do, you don't need that extra RAM anyways. It'll save your battery and less ROM degradation.
Thank you so much. How i wish i know it the day i bought the phone. Ive been using this phone for 6 months.
Mine say 12.0+6.0gb Snapdragon 8+ gen 1 mobile platform Octa-core max 3.0ghz
it means your device is taking your storage of 6 gb and it coverts it into virtual ram...thats why its saying ram : 12+6
But Android doesn't do swap. Not like Linux and Windows and Mac, anyway.
Virtual ram is basically Android's implementation of page file/swap. Just more aggressive afaik, so better to turn off
`top` literally says 8GB are for swap, wtf? if you're knowledgable enough, you can set a custom swapfile size. but i don't know how much different it is in android as opposed to your average linux distro
Means you're damaging your internal storage to have 8Gb fake RAM. Disable it, you won't need more than 12Gb.
Virtual RAM extension. Turn it off if you want to prolong your phone's lifespan.
Marketing bullshit
real bro, i've tried actual swap, this one doesn't seem like it does shit
I've a poco x6 pro with 12 GB ram and 512 GB variant and I turned this ram extension feature off because it makes your phone slow by consuming internal storage of your phone.
Digital ram its a marketing strategy it uses alot of ur processor to make ram from rom which results in battery drainage quicker , its slightly better for those who have 3gb ram and a. Good processor
True, except for the part where you say ROM, that's read-only-memory, you can't exactly write to that ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
My wife have Poco M5 with 4 Gb of RAM. Default state is 4 + 2. Is it ok or bad in this case? CPU is g99.
I would keep it if I were you, 4 GB of RAM is not enough, and that 2 GB of RAM should be very helpful even if it is slower RAM.
My thinking exactly. Thanks
As others said, the 8GBs are using your "hard drive" as a RAM. The problem is that your hard drive is milion times slower than even the cheapest RAM. I highly suggest turning it off
Swap, turn it off
Everything above (uses storage, thus the storage goes faster through it's lifespan. 8, 10, 12 GB is plenty, heck, Even 6GB should be enough for most users. Real RAM is much faster, the additional ram is kind of useless unless you have less than 6gb ram. It acts as more ram. But it's better to turn it off.
Mobile use phone storage as ram - because it's always in use it can degrade actual phone storage faster so opening apps could be slower in the futute
12+bs. Turn that ram extended nonsense off.
virtual ram
Protip: go to settings, and type in: 'show memory status'. Whenever you now go into the recent app overview (basically the open app overview) it shows the amount of memory available to you in the top right. Currently, i have some apps open and for me it shows I have 8.6gb of 12 gb available. I feel i never even used anywhere near that 12gb. Ever.
Turn off the extra ram. It's not useful under most circumstances
That's gimmick on their storage nowadays
That's basically the memory fusion thingy Just turn it off, like you have 12gigs of ram and why waste 8gb of storage for virtual ram that is slower than the actual ram itself
Ram expansion, want advice? Turn it off
12GB Memory is being used by you and 8GB Memory is being used by Xin Jinping👍
12GB memory is used by spy and 8GB memory is used by Jin Ping and The FBI🙏👍
Nothing, because the 8gb is nothing, it's really nothing
20
Guys should i turn it off i have poco x3 nfc with 6gb of ram
8 GB is useless Virtual RAM Expansion.
Its consume more power , keep in mind
Ufs 4.0 storage if you want long term save it turn if off
I think that the +8 GB is the possible memory expansion on the internal ROM of the smartphone.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|kissing_heart)
It means that you have 12 gigs of RAM and 8 gigs of virtual RAM
It is just marketing.
Why are people saying turn off the virtual ram ???
shortens life span of ROM memory, is slower than actual ram, almost never needed since the average for low budget is like 8gb of ram now, worse battery life.
thanks sisterfucker
It's only to speed up the way apps open (rumor idk) and to enhance multitasking capabilities. But it's kind of a gimmick since it uses some of your internal storage as an exchange for extra RAM. Also, it gives out worse battery life.
Oh the extra ram affects your phone's battery?
Imagine you opened more apps. That means there are more apps running. That's a drawback to battery life.
It is because they do not know they cannot turn it off actually. The default ZRAM size is 4 GB and it cannot be lowered. TL;DR Memory extension OFF == Memory extension by 4GB.
Wait, what? So what's the point in turning it off Also wait, what??
The comment was bullshit, disregard.
How to turn it off? Mine say 12.0+6.0gb Snapdragon 8+ gen 1 mobile platform Octa-core max 3.0ghz Pocof5 pro
Go to Additional Settings, and find Memory Extension. Turn it off, and reboot your device.

Turnn it offfff
turn off that fckin shitt bro
12 gb dedicated ram + 8gb virtual ram (from your storage).
It’s a scam
V ram nigga
