GoodOlRoll

YEAHHH!

Bobby_The_Kidd

God I can still hear it

Jason-Genova

HAHAHAHA SAME

Beneficial-Sugar6950

It gets funnier every time I hear it

elpajaroquemamais

We’re gonna take Vermont! Pyah!

420_E-SportsMasta

Imagine being Howard Dean and having an accomplished career and all anyone knows you as is the “YEAH guy”

kaithomasisthegoat

If he were to run today the scream would probably help him because memes are more popular today than 2004

danishjuggler21

Funny, to me he’s the guy who helped get Democrats complete control at the federal and state level back in 2008. If he had stayed as head of the DNC for the 2010 election, then who knows how much different the last decade and a half would have been.

LordoftheJives

The fact that people were convinced that an excited yell that sounded funny was unpresidential considering our current candidates is morbidly hilarious.

puddycat20

Remember how "horrible" it was when Gore sighed during the 2000 debates. Yet today, being a literal convicted felon isn't a big deal at all to some people.

spasske

I still don’t see why people throw shade at it. He was just showing enthusiasm.

ccm596

I mean I'd take it. People don't know me as anything

elpajaroquemamais

Also seeing this derail your campaign and then others get elected later with far worse

Onlysomewhatserious

Easily! He was going to take New Hampshire and South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico, and California and Texas and New York. ... And South Dakota and Oregon and Washington and Michigan, and then he was going to Washington, D.C.

Peacefulzealot

I’m not sure… but I do think he could’ve done better than Kerry. Kerry just didn’t have the presence or personality to stand out at all or even defend himself from attacks. Say what you will about Dean but I think his animated style would’ve played better with the general public at least. Unfortunately… yeah….

PossibleLocation3626

Wasn’t Kerry just Ohio away from winning? I think “better than Kerry” basically means you win.

SirMellencamp

Yeah but Bush was even closer to winning Wisconsin than Kerry was to winning Ohio

liveandknot

Each candidate will have a different level of support in each state. Who knows?

Looieanthony

Swift boat BS did a number. Just enough.

puddycat20

If the swift boat commercials convinced you not to vote from Kerry, you should somehow permanently lose your right to vote. I don't mean you personally, I just mean people in general.

Looieanthony

I voted for Kerry. There definitely are those however…. without a doubt.

EmperoroftheYanks

And they focused the campaign on ohio basically.

TheOldBooks

Better than Kerry is practically a win

revengeappendage

It’s wild to look back at how a well meaning but awkward happy scream (is that what we’d call it?) was such a big deal. But also the world has changed so much in such a short time too.

federalist66

As I'm someone who earnestly believes that John Kerry actually exceeded the fundamentals of that election by so much he got within spitting distance of winning...I do not think Howard Dean could have won.

Anxious_Gift_1808

No

Unique_Statement7811

No. He didn’t stand a chance in the Democrat Primary.

AquaSnow24

Somewhat Depends on his VP pick. Edwards added very little to the ticket in 04. Maybe Gephardt may be able to deliver the Midwest including Ohio for Dean. Perhaps Tom Vilisack would have delivered Iowa to Dean. I still think Dean would lose largely due to lack of message discipline.

SirMellencamp

NOOOOOOOOOOEAH!

Jackoff_Alltrades

Hard to predict a hypothetical… but a clue is he couldn’t even win in the Primaries so my gut says he gets wrecked. I’ve spent much time disputing the actual negative of “the scream”and it being mostly a media creation and proto meme. His campaign was tanking in all the primaries so the scream didn’t do much

Seven22am

Not only did he not win the Iowa caucus, he finished a *very distant* third. He barely beat Dick Gephardt, and I don’t think anybody’s seriously asking how a Gephardt-W race would have went.

Prestigious-Alarm-61

When Howard Dean announced he was running, I thought that he could beat Bush. The only problem that I could see was his more progressive stands on the issues. Would he have been able to sell it to the voters? Kerry was boring and had the personality of a wet noodle. Dean was full of energy and more engaging. At the least, he would have done better than Kerry.

EmergencyBag2346

No, but I’m convinced there are rural areas he could have done better in. I also think he would have been more exciting than Kerry.

StaySafePovertyGhost

Dubya’s 2004 win was rather comfortable by today’s electoral vote standards. Not a full blowout like Reagan or FDR but enough where it was decided. If Dean were in I believe he could appeal to some of the blocs of Dubya voters Kerry couldn’t. Deans big personality and fight for the little guy mentality would help with blue collar swing voters in places like Ohio. But I think Dubya still wins - but by a slimmer margin.

Awkwardtoe1673

It says everything you need to know about the power of the neoliberal media  that the scream is the only thing that anybody remembers about Dean’s campaign.    He really wasn’t as liberal as Bernie Sanders or somebody like that, but the media still went to such extremes to smear him because he was viewed as too liberal.

KennyDROmega

Why's he look high as balls here?

homeboy511

yes

Seventh_Stater

Probably not. There are people who could have beaten Bush, but Dean was not among them.

kaithomasisthegoat

Kerry almost won

Seventh_Stater

Kerry also was not Dean.

Mulliganasty

Not with Republican voter-caging in full effect.

ReturnoftheBulls2022

It depends. But I'd assume that he'll scream his way to victory. ![gif](giphy|eqOvMKP2G5y24|downsized)

rollem

IDK, probably not. 2004 was close, with Ohio being the tipping point state that would've won it for the dems. I think Bush took it by around 100K votes (this was the closest that Dems have gotten to a popular vote loss but EC win). I don't see Dean being more popular there, in fact Kerry, despite being seen as a boring candidate, was about as electable as any Dem could be that year.

kenobrien73

I couldn't believe he got bounced for being enthusiastic.

angrytwig

Forever in my heart uwu

Sweet-Efficiency7466

And then we’re going to Washington to take back the White House… #YEAAAAAAAAAAAH

CHaquesFan

He was a distant third in the iowa primary, no chance

KingMe87

As I recall Dean was considered the more liberal candidate at the time. Part of Kerry’s appeal was as a veteran, he could counter some of the “rally round the flag” effect Bush generated and could more effectively compete in moderate battleground states.

RickJWagner

I don't know if he would have beat Dubya. But I do know Howard Dean is leaving a lot of money on the table. He could be fantastically rich right now if he had capitalized on the 'Yeahhhhhh' moment by doing commercials. There could be some hilarious ads.

Lower-Flounder-9952

Gods, I love this photo

Acceptable_Mirror235

Dean might have won. He brought some energy and excitement that we just didn’t get from Kerry Kerry would have made a good President, but he was not a good candidate. He was like Al Gore that way. The public found him boring, they didn’t connect with him , while they found Dubya to be likable.

DoctorK16

No. Dean wasn’t making it out of the primaries regardless. But if he did he would’ve gotten whooped. W had his own cult of personality back then.

Driveaway1969

Meh, Civil unions were a hot topic at the time. I lived in Vermont during those years and watched the man make some pretty impassioned speeches about gay marriage, civil rights, climate change etc. Good communicator (ironic huh?). Hes a smart dude so who knows. If things lined up right, I think it could have happened.

MinimumViolinist4

Id unironically love an alternate history where he won, and ended every televised address with the “YEAAAAAOOOOOOH!!!!” “Good evening my fellow Americans. YEAAAAAOOOH! Thank you and have a good night.”

Pewterbreath

No. W was still riding high on that post 9/11 bump. Also Dean had a glass jaw--one unflattering clip derailed him and he never could find his way back--if it wasn't this clip it would have been something else.

csudyh

Seems like he lost so no

Greaser_Dude

No. The country was sick of the Clintons and the Democratic party that tried to convince the country that they didn't deserve the vitriol they received. They did. After 8 years, everyone was onto "Slick Willie's" bullshit and arrogance.
