Looks like Elk Capstone. They don't make it anymore so it's easy to get insurance to pay for a full replacement and it's expensive so they will pay out for a high quality replacement.
If you don't need a new roof, don't worry about it.
Makes sense! The guy was so excited, everything sounded like blabbering! š¤£ I have no plans to replace my roof, as itās completely fine! And I love the pattern of it! I researched āelk capstoneā and sure enough, thatās it! This whole time I thought it was regular shingles with a different layout. Didnāt know they were ādesignerā thank you!
Ha. Itās an expensive shingle and discontinued. Read: 100% chance of insurance approving a claim, high profit job. In all seriousness file a claim before they force you into a 2% deductible.
This is the correct advise.
Wait for your opportunity and then take advantage of the claim process. There needs to be wind/hail damage and coverage will need to be opened on the actual shingle for you to win at their game. Donāt show all your cards at the beginning to the insurance company and pull your ace (shingle identification report) when needed, after the adjuster has provided his first report.
Make sure that whomever you are working with is knowledgeable on this and has been through this process before. If not, it can get messy for you as the insured.
Just give it to the adjuster if and when you file the claim. Itās not a game. We actually prefer to pay if we can justify it, itās less work to pay than it is to deny.
Also typically, fulfilling the basic tenant of the policyāhaving damageāisnāt what Iād call āwinning at their gameā.
Roofers, always finding ways to be scumbags.
Personally donāt even look at the brick work first. I look at the flashing job and if the flashing is done properly than Iāll take a look at the brickwork, but if the flashing is shit I donāt bother because the mason didnāt care enough to do the flashing good enough (which is crucial) so I donāt waste my time to look because they probably were rushing and head joints wonāt line up, weepers might not even be in or sloppy and might as well not be there, corner is out, whatever it could be a million things but the flashing is super important!!
The seems on the shingles. I mostly sell certainteed and gaf on my jobs. And there is no shingle that I know of that should be laid with less than 5 or 6 inches from the seems. Not saying your roof is failing or going to fail. I've seen some crazy stuff over the decades. And what's crazy now is this ice shield scam. But I guess you have the make insurance companies happy
I was on the roofs for over 20 years. Even when I started my company. The way it works is that you don't make money by being on the roof. You make money by having people work for you. I have 3 great crews and it took years to find these guys. I went through hundreds of people. It just seems like it's hard for people to understand that there is one way to do things and that is the right way
Back in the day, the roofs we tore off never had ice shields, and they were perfectly fine. And nowadays, the quality of shingles has gone up huge. If you have ice dams, you have a ventilation problem. I'm not saying it doesn't work. It does help out alot of these hack roofers because the homeowner won't notice a leak for a good bit of time
Itās a discontinued premium shingle. If a roofer can find damage more than your deductible your insurance company will be forced to buy you an entire roof. Nothing wrong with using this angle from a roofers perspective, you should get your attic inspected to see if there are leaks rotting the decking or more serious leaks. Aside from that you wouldnāt need a new roof but if you have leaks you would qualify for a more modern premium roof that will better protect your home from damage. Think of it this way, your insurance company doesnāt want to buy you a new roof and if they agree to do so itās probably because you actually need one. Not everything is a scam even if roofers look for opportunities to make a much higher profit, just because we maximize profit doesnāt mean itās wrong. Roofers arenāt lobbying congressman to pass laws, insurance companies are. Please do not fault us because we ultimately work within the system that was not created by us.
Haha every time I look at roofing I just scratch my head and wonder how America got cheated out of real roofing , tile. I keep hoping to see some new items, new concepts that will really bring roofing into the 21st century but really not yet. Asphalt no matter what it is always looks like shit but it's the American gold standard go figure..
There are a few states that have some good examples of old tile, Pennsylvania, West Virginia even saw some in Kentucky. Boy I wish that stuff were still available, frequently used and the price would come down
Right I travel a lot and look at houses a lot from Pasadena CA to NorthernNew England. I am familiar where it is and see it on occasion in certain pockets on houses largely before world war II. Just never understand why it never caught as the only material for roofing as it has in Europe I know it's expensive, it is there too but it is the only roof you put on a house then or now.. In New England where I live it was once all cedar shakes or slate up until the early 20th century. There was always a myth that tile cannot be used in cold snowy climates but of course That is pure garbage. You just need the right tile, the right kind of density and the right style that's all. Plenty of snowy icy places in Europe with delicious tile all over them. I have relatives in Poland and when I go there there are a lot of decrepid barns in this particular region and I always have my eye to find myselfa whole roof of antique double beaver tail tile and ship it over. ..may be
I'm in the rural Midwest, I know roofers that only work on slate and tile roofs.
That being said, there's not much new use of either, except churches and some college work.
Only new construction residential tile I've seen is in California and Florida high end homes, probably South West also I just haven't spent as much time there.
Sure, I live in New England and there are roofers here who only work in slate as well but it's not the norm and it's incredibly expensive and reserved only for the best of the best. That's my point..
You can have anything in America if you are willing to spend for it. Old Westbury estate on Long Island had to reopen the quarry in England for an incredible special kind of Collyweston slate tile that is almost exhausted and could only be found there.. 27,000 of them imported recently...$$$$
If you have money and time you're all set. But in central Europe every house, EVERY house, big and small has a nice tile roof. It is the state of the art. I'll just never understand how America missed that boat.
Of course that's only a rhetorical question, there is no simple answer and I can imagine. America has always been about the quick fix, a growing country and a lack of tradition. The quick fix always won the game even here in New England where there is older establishment but when vinyl siding came about hey there goes the painter. Asphalt, quick fix over expensive slate. I guess it's just a matter of priorities matter of tradition.
But once you eviscerate the backbone of the services that used to provide this kind of work then it does become outrageously expensive. Just a shame that's all
I seem to remember Western Europe pretty well understands the value of money too and capitalism. It's more a matter of priorities and then 100 years of brainwashing and material availability.. America likes cheap shit but it wasn't always that way.. If a historic building loses a roof or has a serious defect oh my god, immediately the cry goes out to the building department must be demolished..
Europe meh . Stabilize it, we'll get around to it maybe sooner maybe later new roof new walls but it's an important part of historic structure of the community and it will survive. Just take a little sloshing around with the allocation but we'll get to it.. priorities. Here we build a shopping malls, strip malls a bazillion dollars on highway infrastructure bullshit build out. Just different priorities where you spend your trillions
We used to have slate. The house was 150 years old and the slate mostly original, except from a section that got chipped when a branch fell on it. The house was not in the USā¦! The problem with forever products is thereās no return business once the house is built, thereās no new roof ever needed.
Because they knocked on my door, and continued their sales pitch after I told them I wasnāt interested in the attempt to sell me a roof. I didnāt contact them, they randomly were knocking on doors, soliciting.
I get 2-3 roofs a week from door knocking, ROI canāt be beat. I am in a bad hail area, I look for hail hit neighborhoods then drive around and look for people who are home. Once I drop a sign in a front yard I then start talking to neighbors and try to get 6-8 more roofs just hanging out getting to know people. I will typically bring my dog out and just walk around getting to know everyone doing a very soft sellā¦ shhhhh, donāt tell anyone
Looks like Elk Capstone. They don't make it anymore so it's easy to get insurance to pay for a full replacement and it's expensive so they will pay out for a high quality replacement. If you don't need a new roof, don't worry about it.

You need 2 dated shingles and you will get a brand new roof through your homeowners Insurance.
Ha. Itās an expensive shingle and discontinued. Read: 100% chance of insurance approving a claim, high profit job. In all seriousness file a claim before they force you into a 2% deductible.

Sounds like you are encouraging him to commit insurance fraud ....
Go onā¦Iād love to hear this!
That chimney flashing tho...
They spent all the money on the shingles didnāt have anything left over for the flashing. best they could do
I know I was like how can the rod be so gold with a flashing job like that š
Whatās wrong with it?
I dont see any reglet or counterflashing cut into the brick/mortar...water will run down the chimney behind whats there
Youāre right, I didnāt look at the top close enough, just saw an attempt. Good eye! My old roofer called reglet flashing ātucker metalā
Yes you have an expensive shingle that's not worth the price. And also looks like they are installed incorrectly
Sorry to bug you but what appears incorrect?
The seems on the shingles. I mostly sell certainteed and gaf on my jobs. And there is no shingle that I know of that should be laid with less than 5 or 6 inches from the seems. Not saying your roof is failing or going to fail. I've seen some crazy stuff over the decades. And what's crazy now is this ice shield scam. But I guess you have the make insurance companies happy
Are you a roofer or a salesman
Salesman

I have 3 great crews and it took years to find these guys. I went through hundreds of people. When you say ice shield scam what do you mean?
Can you elaborate on the ice shield scam?
Apparently, he thinks bringing a roof up to code is a scam
Bro thinks valley metal is the way
Mmmm ice cream
Back in the day, the roofs we tore off never had ice shields, and they were perfectly fine. And nowadays, the quality of shingles has gone up huge. If you have ice dams, you have a ventilation problem. I'm not saying it doesn't work. It does help out alot of these hack roofers because the homeowner won't notice a leak for a good bit of time
Arenāt most CT designer shingles a 4 1/2ā rack method?
I'm talking about the veryicle seams
Please elaborate. Early in my career I installed a lot of Elk.
It seems wrong two you?
Yes just look over their
GAF products are trash.
Ford is better than Chevy.
Why?
Discontinued GAF Elk . Means itās easier to get approved
This is a rare āpre approvedā roof š
Theyāre premium shingles. Theyāre not special tho.
Itās a discontinued premium shingle. If a roofer can find damage more than your deductible your insurance company will be forced to buy you an entire roof. Nothing
Designer shingle
Itās a discontinued designer. This may qualify you for premium discounts depending on location/carrier.
Did the sales person also have a neck tattoo?
Nope. He actually looked like Larry the cable guy.
Nothing. Looks like it needs replaced and cleaned
Haha every time I look at roofing I just scratch my head and wonder how America got cheated out of real roofing , tile. We have tile, it's just rare.

Capitalism is why we canāt adopt using real roofing.

Doesnāt uk have a lot of those flat roofs? wouldnāt call that gold standard either
We used to have slate. The house was 150 years old and the slate mostly original, except from a section that got chipped when a branch fell on it. The house was not in the USā¦! The problem with forever products is thereās no return business once the house is built, thereās no new roof ever needed.
Heās trying to reel you in š£
Not happening. It did however make me curious. š¤£
Then can i ask why have you spoke to ā6ā people about it if you have no interest in replacing it?
Because they knocked on my door, and continued their sales pitch after I told them I wasnāt interested in the attempt to sell me a roof. I didnāt contact them, they randomly were knocking on doors, soliciting.
Oh gotcha, the grinders out and about
Nothing wrong with grinding
I agree, works out for some of us š¤š»

I would be ashamed of myself
For doing a job? Or are you just ashamed of yourself, in general?
2-3 roofs a weekā¦ what do you think that works out to in annual sales?
Yeah, he must have noticed the car in the driveway and the house. used car salesman. Sounds like no offense to use car salesman by the way.
Salesman are dumb fucks
Salesman dumbfucks? Wowā¦ Getting the jobs the hard part, doing it, wellā¦ I have people for that..
Nah, if someone needs a roof or wants a roof itās not hard at all, Iām sure some are fine but I donāt like most. Itās not a hard job.
Itās not, thatās why I love itā¦
Your shingles look like wall paper, doesnāt look very good imo
