This is my go-to comfort game, I fire it up at least once a year. But I'm at the point where 96* only takes maybe 4 hours or so. I wish I could play it over again for the first time. I've been playing lots of rom hacks for it. Not crazy hard stuff, just stuff similar or slightly harder difficulty to the original. There are some absolutely amazing modders out there making games as good, if not better than the original SMW. Side Note - No MAME on MinUI seems like a pretty big downside, playing 3:4 arcade games seems like a big part of the draw to the 1:1 screen.

finitoylargo

I do exactly the same, minimum once a year. I've been out of the hack community for years, now you have me wondering whats out there regarding SMW!

> I've been playing lots of rom hacks for it. Not crazy hard stuff, just stuff similar or slightly harder difficulty to the original. I've gone looking and either found crazy hard Kaizo levels or ones that are too "different"... Can you suggest *specific* ROM hacks that has levels of similar style and difficulty to the original?

I am playing and really enjoying things by Gamma V. For example give this one a try: - Super Mario World: Bowser's Kaizo Conspiracy https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=33943 Ignore the Kaizo in the title, this is a Normal difficulty hack, plays fairly similarly to the original game but is fairly creative in new level design, new bosses, etc. I didn't have much problems beating this one. Gamma V has a ton of, pretty much all "normal" difficulty hacks if you like that. I am currently playing Mario is Missing Done Right, so far pretty good, not as good as Kaizo Conspiracy. Here is an older one that is really popular, "Return to Dinosaur Land" https://www.smwcentral.net/?a=details&id=4990&p=section This one had a few really challenging levels in it and a few places where it's forced to find the secret exits to continue progress, neither of which I loved, but overall it's pretty fun.

coonskinmario

To add to yours, I enjoyed Super Luigi Land (also by Gamma V) and felt it was similar in difficulty to the base game: https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=21515

The_Beep

Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest; New Super Mario World 2: Around The World Both of these hacks are featured on SNESdrunk's video series for SNES romhacks: https://youtu.be/rW1axsCNt9k A Plumber for All Seasons and Sicari Remastered are also great. Aside from Sicari, expect all the hacks to be pretty similar in vibes/diff to the original SMW: https://youtu.be/SIYXg4mQVuE

SpaceCadetMoonMan

Have you played Mushroom Madness 1 and 2?

The_Beep

Ayy, glad you enjoyed SMW. I highly recommend A Plumber of All Seasons, and/or Sicari Remastered, if you ever want to play Mario World again but under a new coat of paint. SMW romhacks are awesome.

xsilas43

Going through A Plumber of All Seasons now and wow is this well done.

LatinWizard99

WHAT?? FINISHING A GAME???? GET YOURSELF A NEW DEVICE TO TINKER AND KEPT IT ON THE DRAWER Joke, the black buttons look clean af, im as well cleaning my backlog

What benefit does MinUI have over JELOS? I like how the JELOS interface looks but if MinUI has a shorter start up time I might take the time to switch

chronoreverse

Boots faster, less configuration in a straightforward interface, better battery life, better suspend and hibernate in my experience. But it's very limited in what it can do by design so it's not for everyone.

blastcat4

Not having MAME on the RGB30 seems like a punishable offense.

Undsputed

As someone who appreciates arcade classics, how do they show up on this screen? Fill it fully?

blastcat4

It depends on the game. But vertical oriented games, like 1942, will fill the vertical space with black bars on the sides. Because the RGB30 has a lot of vertical real estate, it looks quite good, compared to playing it horizontally on a 4:3 or 16:9 screen. Of course, you can play vertical oriented arcade games on a 4:3 or 16:9 screen with the device rotated vertically, but it won't be as comfortable as playing on the RGB30 (or the Cube).

What about the greatest arcade game ever, WWF Wrestlefest? 😎

blastcat4

Your comment made me fire that game up on Retrobat. I hadn't played it before so went to take a look, lol. It looks like it's 3:2, so you'll get some small black bars on top and bottom, but it should like pretty nice on a 1:1 screen like the RGB30's!

Undsputed

Thank you!! Yes it’s a lot of fun. Wish they’d bring a modern version with expanded and updated roster.

chronoreverse

MAME is available, just not on MinUI.

IllegalThoughts

that's his point brother man

UnsaltedNuts76

Still the best handheld with a 1:1 screen.

MimiVRC

This is my favorite game. I love how many secrets and how meaningful they are. No Mario has gotten closer since. New super Mario U had a chance to be similar but they got too lazy and made the secret very uniform with meh payoffs. They didn’t even make start road in that game a second to find, which they should have. Mario world did it perfectly with layers of secrets

br3wnor

1:1 screen club hell yeah

Caping your way through stages feels good to this day. I had to go to my friends house to play, as I lived in a Mega Drive home.

IAmAWitness

Have you had charging and battery issues on the RGB30

No_1_OfConsequence

When I first got it I had to do the unplug and plug back in trick. Ever since with MinUI it’s been solid. I only get maybe 30-45 minutes a day to play, but I can go about 2 weeks without a charge. No issues charging as long as I use the included cable. Not a huge deal.

ext23

Which colour RGB30 is that? Looks great. I got the white one and it's ugly (great device though). Oh also I'm trying to play through this game from beginning to end for the first time in my life and soooo tempting to just save scum my way though it. I should honestly disable the save state hotkey.

No_1_OfConsequence

It’s the green one listed on their official site. The site makes it look a little bit darker, looks much better in person.

motorcitymarxist

Save scum away, no one’s going to judge you, and if it lets you experience and enjoy the game, why wouldn’t you do it?

SuperBadger99

Best video game ever made.

Dangerous-View-4943

Ay SMW is a really good game and im happy you beat it! Also another game to play is S3&K its really good and has some really good levels and music!

I-make-ada-spaghetti

This game looks great at 8:7. I never realised how stretched out everything looked until I played it like that.

KleyPlays

1. I love my RGB30 as well. 2. SMW is my favorite game of all time. I play it all the way through to completion on every handheld I buy to test it out and really get a feel for how it plays. I love the precision of the platforming combined with the secrets.

Chok3U

I'm playing through the game for my first time now. I'm loving it. Can't believe I didn't play it 30 years ago

Elku__

Is the dpad improved on the newer colour ones? This is a really nice colour btw

EnvironmentalOkra728

My first favorite game when I was younger. So many secret levels, and pathways across the in-game world. Love it so much.

GapNo2064

I completed SMB3 and SM64, yet I find this game so hard. Any tips?
